New sub-millimeter heterodyne observations of CO and HCN in Titan's atmosphere with the APEX Swedish Heterodyne Facility Instrument

The origin of the atmosphere of the largest moon of Saturn, Titan, is poorly understood and its chemistry is rather complicated. Ground-based millimeter/sub-millimeter heterodyne spectroscopy resolves line shapes sufficiently to determine information in Titan's atmospheric composition (on vertical profiles and isotopic ratios). We test the capabilities of the Swedish Heterodyne Facility Instrument (SHFI), Receiver APEX-1, together with the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment APEX 12-m telescope for Titan's atmospheric observations. In particular we present sub-millimeter observations of the CO(2-1) and HCN(3-2) lines of the Titan stratosphere with APEX, and with SHFI taken during the Science Verification (SV) instrument phase on March and June 2008. With the help of appropriate radiative transfer calculations we investigate the possibility to constrain the chemical concentrations and optimize the performance of the APEX-1 instrument for inferring vertical profiles of molecular components of the atmosphere of Titan.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super $B$ factory, an asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider with a design luminosity of $8 \times 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, which is around 50 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented.

Nuclear single-particle states: dynamical shell model and energy density functional methods

We discuss different approaches to the problem of reproducing the observed features of nuclear single-particle (s.p.) spectra. In particular, we analyze the dominant energy peaks, and the single-particle strength fragmentation, using the example of neutron states in 208Pb. Our main emphasis is the interpretation of that fragmentation as due to particle-vibration coupling (PVC). We compare with recent Energy Density Functional (EDF) approaches, and try to present a critical perspective.

Cooper pair sizes in 11Li and in superfluid nuclei: a puzzle?

We point out a strong influence of the pairing force on the size of the two neutron Cooper pair in $^{11}$Li, and to a lesser extent also in $^6$He. It seems that these are quite unique situations, since Cooper pair sizes of stable superfluid nuclei are very little influenced by the intensity of pairing, as recently reported. We explore the difference between $^{11}$Li and heavier superfulid nuclei, and discuss reasons for the exceptional situation in $^{11}$Li.

Effect of Tensor Correlations on Single-particle and Collective States

We study the effect of tensor correlations on single-particle and collective states within Skyrme Hartree-Fock and RPA model. Firstly, We study the role of tensor interactions in Skyrme effective interaction on the spin-orbit splittings of N=82 isotones and Z=50 isotope. The isospin dependence of the shell structure is well described as the results of the tensor interactions without destroying good properties of the binding energy and the rms charge radii of the heavy nuclei. Secondly, We performed self-consistent HF+RPA calculations for charge exchange 1$^+$ states in $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb to elucidate the role of tensor interactions on spin dependent excitations. It is pointed out that Gamow-Teller(GT) states can couple strongly with the spin-quadrupole (SQ) 1$^+$ states in the high energy region above E$_x$=30 MeV due to the tensor interactions. As the result of this coupling, more than 10% of the GT strength is shifted to the energy region above 30 MeV, and the main GT peak is moved 2 MeV downward.

Effects of the Tensor Force on the Multipole Response in Finite Nuclei

We present a thorough analysis of the effects of the tensor interaction on the multipole response of magic nuclei, using the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) model with Skyrme interactions. We disentangle the modifications to the static mean field induced by the tensor terms, and the specific features of the residual particle-hole (p-h) tensor interaction, for quadrupole (2+), octupole (3-), and also magnetic dipole (1+) responses. It is pointed out that the tensor force has a larger effect on the magnetic dipole states than on the natural parity states 2+ and 3-, especially at the mean field level. Perspectives for a better assessment of the tensor force parameters are eventually discussed.

Odd-even mass difference and isospin dependent pairing interaction

The neutron and proton odd-even mass differences are studied with Hartree-Fock+BCS (HFBCS) calculations with Skyrme interactions and an isospin dependent contact pairing interaction, which is recently derived from a microscopic nucleon-nucleon interaction. To this end, we perform HFBCS calculations for even and odd semi-magic Tin and Lead isotopes together with even and odd Z isotones with $N$= 50 and 82. The filling approximation is applied to the last unoccupied particle in odd nuclei. Comparisons with the experimental data show a clear manifestation of the isospin dependent pairing correlations in both proton and neutron pairing gaps.

Two-particle correlations in continuum dipole transitions in Borromean nuclei

We discuss the energy and angular distributions of two emitted neutrons from the dipole excitation of typical weakly-bound Borromean nuclei, $^{11}$Li and $^6$He. To this end, we use a three-body model with a density dependent contact interaction between the valence neutrons. Our calculation indicates that the energy distributions for the valence neutrons are considerably different between the two nuclei, although they show similar strong dineutron correlations in the ground state to each other. This different behaviour of the energy distribution primarily reflects the interaction between the neutron and the core nucleus, rather than the interaction between the valence neutrons. That is, the difference can be attributed to the presence of s-wave virtual state in the neutron-core system in $^{11}$Li, which is absent in $^6$He. It is pointed out that the angular distribution for $^{11}$Li in the low energy region shows a clear manifestation of the strong dineutron correlation, whereas the angular distribution for $^{6}$He exhibits a strong anticorrelation effect.

Effect of Tensor Correlations on Gamow-Teller States in 90Zr and 208Pb

The tensor terms of the Skyrme effective interaction are included in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation (HF+RPA) model. The Gamow-Teller (GT) strength function of 90Zr and 208Pb are calculated with and without the tensor terms. The main peaks are moved downwards by about 2 MeV when including the tensor contribution. About 10% of the non-energy weighted sum rule is shifted to the excitation energy region above 30 MeV by the RPA tensor correlations. The contribution of the tensor terms to the energy weighted sum rule is given analytically, and compared to the outcome of RPA.

Di-neutron correlation in light neutron-rich nuclei

Using a three-body model with density-dependent contact interaction, we discuss the root mean square distance between the two valence neutrons in $^{11}$Li nuclues as a function of the center of mass of the neutrons relative to the core nucleus $^9$Li. We show that the mean distance takes a pronounced minimum around the surface of the nucleus, indicating a strong surface di-neutron correlation. We demonstrate that the pairing correlation plays an essential role in this behavior. We also discuss the di-neutron structure in the $^8$He nucleus.

Possible Shape Coexistence and Magnetic Dipole Transitions in $^{17}$C and $^{21}$Ne

Magnetic dipole(M1) transitions of N=11 nuclei, $^{17}$C and $^{21}$Ne are investigated by using shell model and deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock+blocked BCS wave functions. Shell model calculations predict well observed energy spectra and magnetic dipole transitions in $^{21}$Ne, while the results are rather poor to predict these observables in $^{17}$C. In the deformed HF calculations, the ground states of two nuclei are shown to have large prolate deformations close to $β_2$=0.4. It is also pointed out that the first $K^π=1/2^+$ state in $^{21}$Ne is prolately deformed, while the first $K^π=1/2^+$ state in $^{17}$C is predicted to have a large oblate deformation being close to the ground state in energy, We point out that experimentally observed large hindrance of M1 transition between $I^π=1/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ in $^{17}$C can be attributed to a shape coexistence near the ground state of $^{17}$C.

Effective pairing interactions with isospin density dependence

We perform Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations for semi-magic Calcium, Nickel, Tin and Lead isotopes and $N$=20, 28, 50 and 82 isotones using density-dependent pairing interactions recently derived from a microscopic nucleon-nucleon interaction. These interactions have an isovector component so that the pairing gaps in symmetric and neutron matter are reproduced. Our calculations well account for the experimental data for the neutron number dependence of binding energy, two neutrons separation energy, and odd-even mass staggering of these isotopes. This result suggests that by introducing the isovector term in the pairing interaction, one can construct a global effective pairing interaction which is applicable to nuclei in a wide range of the nuclear chart. It is also shown with the local density approximation (LDA) that the pairing field deduced from the pairing gaps in infinite matter reproduces qualitatively well the pairing field for finite nuclei obtained with the HFB method.

Strong dineutron correlation in 8He and 18C

We study the spatial structure of four valence neutrons in the ground state of $^8$He and $^{18}$C nuclei using a core+4$n$ model. For this purpose, we employ a density-dependent contact interaction among the valence neutrons, and solve the five-body Hamiltonian in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. We show that two neutrons with the coupled spin of $S$=0 exhibit a strong dineutron correlation around the surface of these nuclei, whereas the correlation between the two dineutrons is much weaker. Our calculation indicates that the probability of the (1p$_{3/2})^4$ and [(1p$_{3/2})^2$ (p$_{1/2})^2$] configurations in the ground state wave function of $^8$He nucleus is 34.9% and 23.7%, respectively. This is consistent with the recent experimental finding with the $^8$He($p,t)^6$He reaction, that is, the ground state wave function of $^8$He deviates significantly from the pure (1p$_{3/2})^4$ structure.

Pairing Correlations in halo Nuclei

Paring correlations in weakly bound halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li are studied by using a three-body model with a density-dependent contact interaction. We investigate the spatial structure of two-neutron wave function in a Borromean nucleus $^{11}$Li.The behavior of the neutron pair at different densities is simulated by calculating the two-neutron wave function at several distances between the core nucleus $^9$Li and the center of mass of the two neutrons. With this representation, a strong concentration of the neutron pair on the nuclear surface is quantitatively established for neutron-rich nuclei. Dipole excitations in $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li are also studied within the same three-body model and compared with experimental data. The small open angles between the two neutrons from the core are extracted empirically by the B(E1) sum rule together with the rms mass radii, indicating the strong di-neutron correlation in the halo nuclei.

Dipole excitation and geometry of borromean nuclei

We analyze the Coulomb breakup cross sections of $^{11}$Li and $^6$He nuclei using a three-body model with a density-dependent contact interaction. We show that the concentration of the B(E1) strength near the threshold can be well reproduced with this model. With the help of the calculated B(E1) value, we extract the root-mean-square (rms) distance between the core nucleus and the center of mass of two valence neutrons without resorting to the sum rule, which may suffer from unphysical Pauli forbidden transitions. Together with the empirical rms distance between the neutrons obtained from the matter radius study and also from the three-body correlation study in the break-up reaction, we convert these rms distances to the mean opening angle between the valence neutrons from the core nucleus. We find that the obtained mean opening angles in $^{11}$Li and $^6$He agree with the three-body model predictions.

Charge radius and dipole response of $^{11}$Li

We investigate the consistency of the measured charge radius and dipole response of $^{11}$Li within a three-body model. We show how these observables are related to the mean square distance between the $^9$Li core and the center of mass of the two valence neutrons. In this representation we find by considering the effect of smaller corrections that the discrepancy between the results of the two measurements is of the order of 1.5$σ$. We also investigate the sensitivity to the three-body structure of $^{11}$Li and find that the charge radius measurement favors a model with a 50% s-wave component in the ground state of the two-neutron halo, whereas the dipole response is consistent with a smaller s-wave component of about 25% value.

Coexistence of BCS and BEC-like pair structures in halo nuclei

We investigate the spatial structure of the two-neutron wave function in the Borromean nucleus $^{11}$Li, using a three-body model of $^9$Li $+n+n$, which includes many-body correlations stemming from the Pauli principle. The behavior of the neutron pair at different densities is simulated by calculating the two-neutron wave function at several distances between the core nucleus $^9$Li and the center of mass of the two neutrons. With this representation, a strong concentration of the neutron pair on the nuclear surface is for the first time quantitatively established for neutron-rich nuclei. That is, the neutron pair wave function in $^{11}$Li has an oscillatory behavior at normal density, while it becomes a well localized single peak in the dilute density region around the nuclear surface. We point out that these features qualitatively correspond to the BCS and BEC-like structures of the pair wave function found in infinite nuclear matter.

Charge Exchange Spin-Dipole Excitations of 90Zr and 208Pb and Neutron Matter Equation of State

Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb are studied by using a Skyrme Hartree-Fock(HF) + Random Phase approximation (RPA). The calculated spin-dipole strength distributions are compared with experimental data obtained by $^{90}$Zr (p,n) $^{90}$Nb and $^{90}$Zr (n,p) $^{90}$ Nb reactions. The model-independent SD sum rule values of various Skyrme interactions are studied in comparison with the experimental values in order to determine the neutron skin thickness of $^{90}$Zr. The pressure of the neutron matter equation of state (EOS) and the nuclear matter symmetry energy are discussed in terms of the neutron skin thickness and peak energies of SD strength distributions.
