Isospin asymmetry in the continuum of the A=14 mirror nuclei

We study the isospin asymmetry in the isoscalar (IS) excitations in the mirror nuclei $^{14}$O and $^{14}$C by using the Hartree-Fock(HF)+random phase approximation (RPA) linear response function theory with a Skyrme interaction to take into account the continuum effect properly. The asymmetry in the IS monopole, dipole responses is pointed out in the continuum near the particle threshold with respect to the excitation energy and the sum rule strength. On the other hand, no clear sign of the asymmetry is found in the giant resonance (GR) region. In the quadrupole case, the calculated strengths of the mirror nuclei show almost the same energy dependence from the threshold to the GR region. It is found that the transition densities of the monopole response show an extended halo structure near the threshold, while those of GR region show a typical radial dependence of the compressional collective mode without any halo effect. Contrary to the transition densities of the monopole response, those of quadrupole response do not show any sign of the extended feature of wave functions neither near the threshold nor the GR energy region. Calculated strength distributions of the IS multipole states are compared with recent experimental data obtained by the multipole decomposition analysis of $α$ inelastic scattering on $^{14}$O.

Spin-orbit splitting and the tensor component of the Skyrme interaction

We study the role of the tensor term of the Skyrme effective interactions on the spin-orbit splittings in the N=82 isotones and Z=50 isotopes. The different role of the triplet-even and triplet-odd tensor forces is pointed out by analyzing the spin-orbit splittings in these nuclei. The experimental isospin dependence of these splittings cannot be described by Hartree-Fock calculations employing the usual Skyrme parametrizations, but is very well accounted for when the tensor interaction is introduced. The capability of the Skyrme forces to reproduce binding energies and charge radii in heavy nuclei is not destroyed by the introduction of the tensor term. Finally, we also discuss the effect of the tensor force on the centroid of the Gamow-Teller states.

Three-body model calculations for 16C nucleus

We apply a three-body model consisting of two valence neutrons and the core nucleus $^{14}$C in order to investigate the ground state properties and the electronic quadrupole transition of the $^{16}$C nucleus. The discretized continuum spectrum within a large box is taken into account by using a single-particle basis obtained from a Woods-Saxon potential. The calculated B(E2) value from the first 2$^+$ state to the ground state shows good agreement with the observed data with the core polarization charge which reproduces the experimental B(E2) value for $^{15}$C. We also show that the present calculation well accounts for the longitudinal momentum distribution of $^{15}$C fragment from the breakup of $^{16}$C nucleus. We point out that the dominant ($d_{5/2})^2$ configuration in the ground state of $^{16}$C plays a crucial role for these agreement.

Neutron Skin Thickness of 90Zr Determined By Charge Exchange Reactions

Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of 90Zr are studied by the 90Zr(p,n) and 90Zr(n,p) reactions at 300 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique is employed to obtain the SD strength distributions in the cross section spectra. For the first time, a model-independent SD sum rule value is obtained: 148+/-12 fm^2. The neutron skin thickness of 90Zr is determined to be 0.07+/-0.04 fm from the SD sum rule value.

Evolution of deformations in medium-mass nuclei

Evolution of quadrupole deformations in $sd$ and $pf$ shell nuclei with mass A= 18$\sim$56 is studied by using deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) model with pairing correlations. We point out that the quadrupole deformations of the nuclei with the isospin T=0 and T=1 show strong mass number dependence as a clear manifestation of dynamical evolution of deformation in nuclear many-body systems. The competition between the deformation driving particle-vibration coupling and the closed shell structure is shown in a systematic study of the ratios between the proton and neutron deformations in nuclei with T=$|$T$_z|$=1. Calculated quadrupole and hexadecapole deformations are compared with shell model results and available experimental data. A relation between the skin thickness and the intrinsic Q$_2$ moments is also discussed.

Pairing correlations in nuclei on the neutron-drip line

Paring correlations in weakly bound nuclei on the edge of neutron drip line is studied by using a three-body model. A density-dependent contact interaction is employed to calculate the ground state of halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li, as well as a skin nucleus $^{24}$O. Dipole excitations in these nuclei are also studied within the same model. We point out that the di-neutron type correlation plays a dominant role in the halo nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{11}$Li having the coupled spin of the two neutrons $S$=0, while the correlation similar to the BCS type is important in $^{24}$O. Contributions of the spin $S$=1 and S=0 configurations are separately discussed in the low energy dipole excitations.

Perturbative HFB model for many-body pairing correlations

We develop a perturbative model to treat the off-diagonal components in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) transformation matrix, which are neglected in the BCS approximation. Applying the perturbative model to a weakly bound nucleus $^{84}$Ni, it is shown that the perturbative approach reproduces well the solutions of the HFB method both for the quasi-particle energies and the radial dependence of quasi-particle wave functions. We find that the non-resonant part of the continuum single-particle state can acquire an appreciable occupation probability when there exists a weakly bound state close to the Fermi surface. This result originates from the strong coupling between the continuum particle state and the weakly bound state, and is absent in the BCS approximation. The limitation of the BCS approximation is pointed out in comparison with the HFB and the present perturbative model.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super B factory, an asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider with a design luminosity of 5 x 10^35 cm^-2s^-1, which is around 40 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented. The sensitivity studies are a part of the activities associated with the preparation of a Letter of Intent for SuperKEKB, which has been submitted recently.

Status and perspectives of sin2alpha measurements

In the neutral B meson system, it is possible to measure the CKM angle alpha using the decay mode b -> u ubar d in the presence of pollution from gluonic b -> d penguin decays. Here the recent status of the measurements of CP-violating asymmetry parameters using time-dependent analyses in B -> pi+pi- and B -> rho pi decays and the perspectives of a sin2alpha measurement are presented.

Continuum QRPA response for deformed neutron-rich nuclei

We discuss properties of the quadrupole collective excitation of the deformed neutron-rich nucleus $^{38}$Mg within the framework of quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA). We first solve the coupled-channels equations to obtain the single-particle levels, and construct the ground state by treating the pairing correlations in the BCS approximation. We then solve the QRPA equation using the response function formalism, by including the continuum spectra with the box dicscretization method. We show that the collectivity of the gamma vibration (the lowest $K^π=2^+$ mode) is significantly enhanced if protons and neutrons have different deformations. We also discuss an attempt towards full continuum QRPA calculations for deformed nuclei.

Isoscalar dipole strength in ^{208}_{82}Pb_{126}: the spurious mode and the strength in the continuum

Isoscalar dipole (compression) mode is studied first using schematic harmonic-oscillator model and, then, the self-consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) and random phase approximation (RPA) solved in coordinate space. Taking ^{208}Pb and the SkM* interaction as a numerical example, the spurious component and the strength in the continuum are carefully examined using the sum rules. It is pointed out that in the continuum calculation one has to use an extremely fine radial mesh in HF and RPA in order to separate, with good accuracy, the spurious component from intrinsic excitations.

Continuum QRPA in the coordinate space representation

We formulate a quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) in the coordinate space representation. This model is a natural extension of the RPA model of Shlomo and Bertsch to open-shell nuclei in order to take into account pairing correlations together with the coupling to the continuum. We apply it to the $^{120}$Sn nucleus and show that low-lying excitation modes are significantly influenced by the pairing effects although the effects are marginal in the giant resonance region. The dependence of the pairing effect on the parity of low-lying collective mode is also discussed.

Restoration of Isospin Symmetry in Highly Excited Nuclei

Explicit relations between the isospin mixing probability, the spreading width $Γ_{IAS}^{\downarrow}$ of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) and the statistical decay width $Γ_c$ of the compound nucleus at finite excitation energy, are derived by using the Feshbach projection formalism. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing probability is discussed quantitatively for the first time by using the values of $Γ_{IAS}^{\downarrow}$ and of $Γ_c$ calculated by means of microscopic models. It is shown that the mixing probability remains essentially constant up to a temperature of the order of 1 MeV and then decreases to about 1/4 of its zero temperature value, at higher temperature than $\approx$ 3 MeV, due to the short decay time of the compound system.

Widths of Isobaric Analog Resonances: a microscopic approach

A self-consistent particle-phonon coupling model is used to investigate the properties of the isobaric analog resonance in $^{208}$Bi. It is shown that quantitative agreement with experimental data for the energy and the width can be obtained if the effects of isospin-breaking nuclear forces are included, in addition to the Coulomb force effects. A connection between microscopic model predictions and doorway state approaches which make use of the isovector monopole resonance, is established via a phenomenological ansatz for the optical potential.

Energy Dependence of Breakup Cross Sections of Halo Nucleus 8B and Effective Interactions

We study the energy dependence of the cross sections for nucleon removal of 8B projectiles. It is shown that the Glauber model calculations with nucleon-nucleon t-matrix reproduce well the energy dependence of the breakup cross sections of 8B. A DWBA model for the breakup cross section is also proposed and results are compared with those of the Glauber model. We show that to obtain an agreement between the DWBA calculations, the Glauber formalism, and the experimental data, it is necessary to modify the energy behavior of the effective interaction. In particular, the breakup potential has a quite different energy dependence than the strong absorption potential.

Probing the Ground State and Transition Densities of Halo Nuclei

We investigate the use of elastic and inelastic scatterings with secondary beams of radioactive nuclei as a mean to obtain information on ground state properties and transition matrix elements to continuum states. An eikonal model is developed for this purpose by using the folding potential. In particular we discuss possible signatures of halo wavefunctions in elastic and inelastic scattering experiments.
