Supersymmetric Warped Solutions from Type IIB Orientifold Reduction

We construct a family of supersymmetric solutions in Type IIB supergravity of the form ${\rm WAdS}_3\times {\rm WS}^3\times T^4$, where ${\rm WAdS}_3$ and ${\rm WS^3}$ denote a warped anti-de Sitter spacetime and a warped 3-sphere, respectively, while $T^4$ denotes an internal 4-torus. These backgrounds are constructed by uplifting corresponding solutions in the $D=6$, $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ ungauged supergravity resulting from the compactification of Type IIB supergravity on a $T^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$-orientifold. More specifically, the supersymmetric solutions are ${\rm WAdS}_3\times {\rm WS}^3\times T^4$ with lightlike warped AdS$_3$ and ${\rm WAdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times T^4$ in which the warping of AdS$_3$ is generic. Moreover, we also construct solutions in the form of a warped product $\mathrm{LM}^3_{\zeta,\omega}\times_{{\rm w}} \mathrm{S}^3\times T^4$ of a 2-parameter deformation $\mathrm{LM}^3_{\zeta,\omega}$ of ${\rm AdS}_3$ and a three-sphere. We discuss the relation of these backgrounds to known solutions.

Consistent Pauli reduction on group manifolds

We prove an old conjecture by Duff, Nilsson, Pope and Warner asserting that the NS-NS sector of supergravity (and more general the bosonic string) allows for a consistent Pauli reduction on any d-dimensional group manifold G, keeping the full set of gauge bosons of the G x G isometry group of the bi-invariant metric on G. The main tool of the construction is a particular generalised Scherk-Schwarz reduction ansatz in double field theory which we explicitly construct in terms of the group's Killing vectors. Examples include the consistent reduction from ten dimensions on $S^3\times S^3$ and on similar product spaces. The construction is another example of globally geometric non-toroidal compactifications inducing non-geometric fluxes.

Membrane Duality Revisited

Just as string T-duality originates from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the string worldsheet, so it has been suggested that M-theory U-dualities originate from transforming field equations into Bianchi identities on the membrane worldvolume. However, this encounters a problem unless the target space has dimension $D = p + 1$. We identify the problem to be the nonintegrability of the U-duality transformation assigned to the pull-back map. Just as a double geometry renders manifest the $O(D,D)$ string T-duality, here we show in the case of the M2-brane in $D = 3$ that a generalised geometry renders manifest the $SL(3) \times SL(2)$ U-duality. In the case of M2-brane in $D=4$, with and without extra target space coordinates, we show that only the ${\rm GL}(4,R)\ltimes R^4$ subgroup of the expected $SL(5,R)$ U-duality symmetry is realised.

On the Magical Supergravities in Six Dimensions

Magical supergravities are a very special class of supergravity theories whose symmetries and matter content in various dimensions correspond to symmetries and underlying algebraic structures of the remarkable geometries of the Magic Square of Freudenthal, Rozenfeld and Tits. These symmetry groups include the exceptional groups and some of their special subgroups. In this paper, we study the general gaugings of these theories in six dimensions which lead to new couplings between vector and tensor fields. We show that in the absence of hypermultiplet couplings the gauge group is uniquely determined by a maximal set of commuting translations within the isometry group SO(n_T,1) of the tensor multiplet sector. Moreover, we find that in general the gauge algebra allows for central charges that may have nontrivial action on the hypermultiplet scalars. We determine the new minimal couplings, Yukawa couplings and the scalar potential.

Superconformal Sigma Models in Three Dimensions

We construct superconformal gauged sigma models with extended rigid supersymmetry in three dimensions. Those with N>4 have necessarily flat targets, but the models with N \leq 4 admit non-flat targets, which are cones with appropriate Sasakian base manifolds. Superconformal symmetry also requires that the three dimensional spacetimes admit conformal Killing spinors which we examine in detail. We present explicit results for the gauged superconformal theories for N=1,2. In particular, we gauge a suitable subgroup of the isometry group of the cone in a superconformal way. We finally show how these sigma models can be obtained from Poincare supergravity. This connection is shown to necessarily involve a subset of the auxiliary fields of supergravity for N \geq 2.

Generalization of Okamoto's equation to arbitrary $2\times 2$ Schlesinger systems

The $2\times 2$ Schlesinger system for the case of four regular singularities is equivalent to the Painlev\'e VI equation. The Painlev\'e VI equation can in turn be rewritten in the symmetric form of Okamoto's equation; the dependent variable in Okamoto's form of the PVI equation is the (slightly transformed) logarithmic derivative of the Jimbo-Miwa tau-function of the Schlesinger system. The goal of this note is twofold. First, we find a symmetric uniform formulation of an arbitrary Schlesinger system with regular singularities in terms of appropriately defined Virasoro generators. Second, we find analogues of Okamoto's equation for the case of the $2\times2 $ Schlesinger system with an arbitrary number of poles. A new set of scalar equations for the logarithmic derivatives of the Jimbo-Miwa tau-function is derived in terms of generators of the Virasoro algebra; these generators are expressed in terms of derivatives with respect to singularities of the Schlesinger system.

Intersecting Attractors

We apply the entropy formalism to the study of the near-horizon geometry of extremal black p-brane intersections in D>5 dimensional supergravities. The scalar flow towards the horizon is described in terms an effective potential given by the superposition of the kinetic energies of all the forms under which the brane is charged. At the horizon active scalars get fixed to the minima of the effective potential and the entropy function is given in terms of U-duality invariants built entirely out of the black p-brane charges. The resulting entropy function reproduces the central charges of the dual boundary CFT and gives rise to a Bekenstein-Hawking like area law. The results are illustrated in the case of black holes and black string intersections in D=6, 7, 8 supergravities where the effective potentials, attractor equations, moduli spaces and entropy/central charges are worked out in full detail.

The Gaugings of Maximal D=6 Supergravity

We construct the most general gaugings of the maximal D=6 supergravity. The theory is (2,2) supersymmetric, and possesses an on-shell SO(5,5) duality symmetry which plays a key role in determining its couplings. The field content includes 16 vector fields that carry a chiral spinor representation of the duality group. We utilize the embedding tensor method which determines the appropriate combinations of these vectors that participate in gauging of a suitable subgroup of SO(5,5). The construction also introduces the magnetic duals of the 5 two-form potentials and 16 vector fields.

Higher spin holography for SYM in d dimensions

We derive the spectrum of gauge invariant operators for maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in d dimensions. After subtracting the tower of BPS multiplets, states are shown to fall into long multiplets of a hidden SO(10,2) symmetry dressed by thirty-two supercharges. Their primaries organize into a universal, i.e. d-independent pattern. The results are in perfect agreement with those following from (naive) KK reduction of type II strings on the warped AdS x S near-horizon geometry of Dp-branes.

Non-semisimple and Complex Gaugings of N=16 Supergravity

Maximal and non-maximal supergravities in three dimensions allow for a large variety of semisimple (Chern-Simons) gauge groups. In this paper, we analyze non-semisimple and complex gauge groups that satisfy the pertinent consistency relations for a maximal (N=16) gauged supergravity to exist. We give a general procedure how to generate non-semisimple gauge groups from known admissible semisimple gauge groups by a singular boost within E_{8(8)}. Examples include the theories with gauge group SO(8) x T_{28} that describe the reduction of IIA/IIB supergravity on the seven-sphere. In addition, we exhibit two `strange embeddings' of the complex gauge group SO(8,C) into (real) E_{8(8)} and prove that both can be consistently gauged. We discuss the structure of the associated scalar potentials as well as their relation to those of D>3 gauged supergravities.

On K(E_9)

We study the maximal compact subgroup K(E_9) of the affine Lie group E_9(9) and its on-shell realization as an R symmetry of maximal N=16 supergravity in two dimensions. We first give a rigorous definition of the group K(E_9), which lives on the double cover of the spectral parameter plane, and show that the infinitesimal action of K(E_9) on the chiral components of the bosons and the fermions is determined in terms of an expansion of the Lie algebra of K(E_9) about the two branch points of this cover; this implies in particular that the fermions of N=16 supergravity transform in a spinor representation of K(E_9). The fermionic equations of motion can be fitted into the lowest components of a single K(E_9) covariant `Dirac equation', with the linear system of N=16 supergravity as the gauge connection. These results suggest the existence of an `off-shell' realization of K(E_9) in terms of an infinite component spinor representation. We conclude with some coments on `generalized holonomies' of M theory.

Gauged Supergravities in Three Dimensions: A Panoramic Overview

Maximal and non-maximal supergravities in three spacetime dimensions allow for a large variety of semisimple and non-semisimple gauge groups, as well as complex gauge groups that have no analog in higher dimensions. In this contribution we review the recent progress in constructing these theories and discuss some of their possible applications.

On the spectrum of AdS/CFT beyond supergravity

We test the spectrum of string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 derived in hep-th/0305052 against that of single-trace gauge invariant operators in free N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Masses of string excitations at critical tension are derived by extrapolating plane-wave frequencies at g_{YM}=0 down to finite J. On the SYM side, we present a systematic description of the spectrum of single-trace operators and its reduction to PSU(2,2|4) superconformal primaries via a refined Eratostenes' supersieve. We perform the comparison of the resulting SYM/string spectra of charges and multiplicities order by order in the conformal dimension \Delta up to \Delta=10 and find perfect agreement. Interestingly, the SYM/string massive spectrum exhibits a hidden symmetry structure larger than expected, with bosonic subgroup SO(10,2) and thirty-two supercharges.

Vacua of Maximal Gauged D=3 Supergravities

We analyze the scalar potentials of maximal gauged three-dimensional supergravities which reveal a surprisingly rich structure. In contrast to maximal supergravities in dimensions D>3, all these theories admit a maximally supersymmetric (N=16) ground state with negative cosmological constant Lambda<0, except for the gauge group SO(4,4)^2, for which Lambda=0. We compute the mass spectra of bosonic and fermionic fluctuations around these vacua and identify the unitary irreducible representations of the relevant background (super)isometry groups to which they belong. In addition, we find several stationary points which are not maximally supersymmetric, and determine their complete mass spectra as well. In particular, we show that there are analogs of all stationary points found in higher dimensions, among them de Sitter vacua in the theories with noncompact gauge groups SO(5,3)^2 and SO(4,4)^2, as well as anti-de Sitter vacua in the compact gauged theory preserving 1/4 and 1/8 of the supersymmetries. All the dS vacua have tachyonic instabilities, whereas there do exist non-supersymmetric AdS vacua which are stable, again in contrast to the D>3 theories.

Schlesinger transformations and quantum R-matrices

Schlesinger transformations are discrete monodromy preserving symmetry transformations of a meromorphic connection which shift by integers the eigenvalues of its residues. We study Schlesinger transformations for twisted sl_N-valued connections on the torus. A universal construction is presented which gives the elementary two-point transformations in terms of Belavin's elliptic quantum R-matrix. In particular, the role of the quantum deformation parameter is taken by the difference of the two poles whose residue eigenvalues are shifted. Elementary one-point transformations (acting on the residue eigenvalues at a single pole) are constructed in terms of the classical elliptic r-matrix. The action of these transformations on the tau-function of the system may completely be integrated and we obtain explicit expressions in terms of the parameters of the connection. In the limit of a rational R-matrix, our construction and the tau-quotients reduce to the classical results of Jimbo and Miwa in the complex plane.

Chern-Simons Vortices in Supergravity

We study supersymmetric vortex solutions in three-dimensional abelian gauged supergravity. First, we construct the general U(1)-gauged D=3, N=2 supergravity whose scalar sector is an arbitrary Kahler manifold with U(1) isometry. This construction clarifies the connection between local supersymmetry and the specific forms of some scalar potentials previously found in the literature -- in particular, it provides the locally supersymmetric embedding of the abelian Chern-Simons Higgs model. We show that the Killing spinor equations admit rotationally symmetric vortex solutions with asymptotically conical geometry which preserve half of the supersymmetry.

N=8 matter coupled AdS_3 supergravities

Following the recent construction of maximal (N=16) gauged supergravity in three dimensions, we derive gauged D=3, N=8 supergravities in three dimensions as deformations of the corresponding ungauged theories with scalar manifolds SO(8,n)/(SO(8)x SO(n)). As a special case, we recover the N=(4,4) theories with local SO(4) = SO(3)_L x SO(3)_R, which reproduce the symmetries and massless spectrum of D=6, N=(2,0) supergravity compactified on AdS_3 x S^3.

Compact and Noncompact Gauged Maximal Supergravities in Three Dimensions

We present the maximally supersymmetric three-dimensional gauged supergravities. Owing to the special properties of three dimensions -- especially the on-shell duality between vector and scalar fields, and the purely topological character of (super)gravity -- they exhibit an even richer structure than the gauged supergravities in higher dimensions. The allowed gauge groups are subgroups of the global E_8 symmetry of ungauged N=16 supergravity. They include the regular series SO(p,8-p) x SO(p,8-p) for all p=0,1,...,4, the group E_8 itself, as well as various noncompact forms of the exceptional groups E_7, E_6 and F_4 x G_2. We show that all these theories admit maximally supersymmetric ground states, and determine their background isometries, which are superextensions of the anti-de Sitter group SO(2,2). The very existence of these theories is argued to point to a new supergravity beyond the standard D=11 supergravity.
