Direct relation between the low-energy spin excitations and superconductivity of overdoped high-$T_c$ superconductors

The dynamic spin susceptibility, $χ''(ω)$, has been measured over the energy range of $2 \leq ω\leq 10$ meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. Incommensurate (IC) spin excitations are observed at 8 K for all superconducting samples for $0.25 \leq x \leq 0.28$ with $χ''$ peaking at $\sim 6$ meV. The IC peaks at 6 meV become smaller in intensity with increasing $x$ and, finally, become unobservable for a sample with $x=0.30$ which has no bulk superconductivity. The maximum $χ''$ decreases linearly with $T_c$(onset) in the overdoped region, implying a direct cooperative relation between the spin fluctuations and the superconductivity.

The crystal growth and characterization of NaxCoO2 and NaxCoO2yH2O

A systematic study of NaxCoO2 (x=0.50 - 0.90) and NaxCoO2 yH(D)2O (x=0.26 - 0.42, y=1.3) has been performed to determine phase stability and the effect of hydration on the structural and superconducting properties of this system. We show that a careful control of the Na deintercalation process and hydration dynamics is possible in single crystals of this system. Furthermore, we give experimental evidence that the dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on Na content is much weaker than reported earlier. Implications of this effect for the understanding of the superconducting phase diagram are discussed.

$Δ$, $K^{*}$ and $ρ$ Resonance Production and Their Probing of Freeze-out Dynamics at RHIC

We report the measurements of the transverse momentum spectra and invariant mass distributions of $Δ$(1232)$\to πp$, $K^*$(892)$^{0,\pm} \to πK$ and $ρ$(770)$^{0} \to π^{+} π^{-}$ in Au+Au and p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV using the STAR TPC at RHIC. These resonances provide sensitive probes to examine the evolution dynamics in the hadronic medium through their decay and regeneration processes. The particle ratios of $K^*/K$, $K^*/ϕ$, $Δ$/p and $ρ/π$, the $K^*$, $ρ$ and $Δ$ apparent masses and the dependence of these quantities on centrality provide evidence of dynamical interaction and re-scattering between hadrons close to freeze-out. The dependence of resonance yields on the strength of their hadronic cross sections and the lifetime between the freeze-outs will also be discussed. In the intermediate $p_{T}$ region ($2<p_T<4$ GeV/c), the nuclear modification factors ($R_{CP}$ and $R_{AA}$) of $K^*$ are similar to those of $K_{S}$ and smaller than those of baryons ($Λ$). In the intermediate $p_{T}$ region, no strong dependence on the particle masses is seen in the data.

$K^{*}(892)$ Production in Au+Au and pp Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV at STAR

Mid-rapidity $K^{*0}(892)\to Kπ$ and $K^{*\pm}(892)\to K_S^0π^{\pm}$ are measured in Au+Au and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC. The $K^{*0}(892)$ mass is systematically shifted at small transverse momentum for both Au+Au and pp collisions. The $K^{*0}(892)$ transverse mass spectra are measured in Au+Au collisions at different centralities and in pp collisions. The $K^{*0}(892)$ mean transverse momentum as a function of the collision centrality is compared to those of identified $π^{-}$, $K^{-}$ and $\bar{p}$. The $K^{*}/K$ and $ϕ/K^{*}$ ratios are compared to measurements in A+A, $pp$, $\bar{p}p$, $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at various colliding energies. The physics implications of these measurements are also discussed.

Field-Induced Thermal Metal-to-Insulator Transition in Underdoped LSCO

The transport of heat and charge in cuprates was measured in single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4+δ} (LSCO) across the doping phase diagram at low temperatures. In underdoped LSCO, the thermal conductivity is found to decrease with increasing magnetic field in the T goes to 0 limit, in striking contrast to the increase observed in all superconductors, including cuprates at higher doping. In heavily underdoped LSCO, where superconductivity can be entirely suppressed with an applied field, we show that a novel thermal metal-to-insulator transition takes place upon going from the superconducting state to the field-induced normal state.

Field-induced thermal metal-to-insulator transition in underdoped LSCO

The transport of heat and charge in cuprates was measured in undoped and heavily-underdoped single crystal La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4+delta} (LSCO). In underdoped LSCO, the thermal conductivity is found to decrease with increasing magnetic field in the T --> 0 limit, in striking contrast to the increase observed in all superconductors, including cuprates at higher doping. The suppression of superconductivity with magnetic field shows that a novel thermal metal-to-insulator transition occurs upon going from the superconducting state to the field-induced normal state.

Doping dependence of superconducting gap in YBa_2Cu_3O_y from universal heat transport

Thermal transport in the T -> 0 limit was measured as a function of doping in high-quality single crystals of the cuprate superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_y. The residual linear term kappa_0/T is found to decrease as one moves from the overdoped regime towards the Mott insulator region of the phase diagram. The doping dependence of the low-energy quasiparticle gap extracted from kappa_0/T is seen to scale closely with that of the pseudogap, arguing against a non-superconducting origin for the pseudogap. The presence of a linear term for all dopings is evidence against the existence of a quantum phase transition to an order parameter with a complex (ix) component.

Magnetic Helicity Evolution During the Solar Activity Cycle: Observations and Dynamo Theory

We study a simple model for the solar dynamo in the framework of the Parker migratory dynamo, with a nonlinear dynamo saturation mechanism based on magnetic helicity conservation arguments. We find a parameter range in which the model demonstrates a cyclic behaviour with properties similar to that of Parker dynamo with the simplest form of algebraic alpha-quenching. We compare the nonlinear current helicity evolution in this model with data for the current helicity evolution obtained during 10 years of observations at the Huairou Solar Station of China. On one hand, our simulated data demonstrate behaviour comparable with the observed phenomenology, provided that a suitable set of governing dynamo parameters is chosen. On the other hand, the observational data are shown to be rich enough to reject some other sets of governing parameters. We conclude that, in spite of the very preliminary state of the observations and the crude nature of the model, the idea of using observational data to constrain our ideas concerning magnetic field generation in the framework of the solar dynamo appears promising.

Spin-wave scattering at low temperatures in manganite films

The temperature $T$ and magnetic field $H$ dependence of the resistivity $ρ$ has been measured for La$_{0.8-y}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_{3}$ (y=0 and 0.128) films grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. The low-temperature $ρ$ in the ferromagnetic metallic region follows well $ρ(H,T)=ρ_{0}(H)+A(H)ω_{s}/\sinh (\hbar ω_{s}/2k_{B}T)+B(H)T^{7/2}$ with $ρ_{0}$ being the residual resistivity. We attribute the second and third term to small-polaron and spin-wave scattering, respectively. Our analysis based on these scattering mechanisms also gives the observed difference between the metal-insulator transition temperatures of the films studied. Transport measurements in applied magnetic field further indicate that spin-wave scattering is a key transport mechanism at low temperatures.

Improved Irreversibility Behaviour and Critical Current Density in MgB2-Diamond Nanocomposites

MgB2-diamond nanocomposite superconductors have been synthesized by addition of nano-diamond powder. Microstructural analysis shows that the nanocomposite superconductor consists of tightly-packed MgB2 nano-grains (~50-100 nm) with highly-dispersed and uniformly-distributed diamond nanoparticles (~10-20 nm) inside the grains. The Jc-H and Hiir-T characteristics have been significantly improved in this MgB2-diamond nanocomposite, compared to MgB2 bulk materials prepared by other techniques. Also, the Jc value of 1x104 A/cm2 at 20 K and 4 T and the Hirr value of 6.4 T at 20 K have been achieved

Doping Effect of Nano-Diamond on Superconductivity and Flux Pinning in MgB2

Doping effect of diamond nanoparticles on the superconducting properties of MgB2 bulk material has been studied. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of MgB2 is suppressed by the diamond-doping, however, the irreversibility field Hirr and the critical current density Jc are systematically enhanced. Microstructural analysis shows that the diamond-doped MgB2 superconductor consists of tightly-packed MgB2 nano-grains (~50-100 nm) with highly-dispersed and uniformly-distributed diamond nanoparticles (~10-20 nm) inside the grains. High density of dislocations and diamond nanoparticles may take the responsibility for the enhanced flux pinning in the diamond-doped MgB2.

Thermal Conductivity across the Phase Diagram of Cuprates: Low-Energy Quasiparticles and Doping Dependence of the Superconducting Gap

Heat transport in the cuprate superconductors YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{y}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ was measured at low temperatures as a function of doping. A residual linear term kappa_{0}/T is observed throughout the superconducting region and it decreases steadily as the Mott insulator is approached from the overdoped regime. The low-energy quasiparticle gap extracted from kappa_{0}/T is seen to scale closely with the pseudogap. The ubiquitous presence of nodes and the tracking of the pseudogap shows that the overall gap remains of the pure d-wave form throughout the phase diagram, which excludes the possibility of a complex component (ix) appearing at a putative quantum phase transition and argues against a non-superconducting origin to the pseudogap. A comparison with superfluid density measurements reveals that the quasiparticle effective charge is weakly dependent on doping and close to unity.

Effect of Na doping on flux pinning of YBa1.9Na0.1Cu3O7-d

We have prepared Na-doped YBa2Cu3Oy (YBa1.9Na0.1Cu3Oy +40mol%Y211) (YBNCO) and Na-free YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) samples by the Melt-Textured Growth (MTG) method to study the effect of doped Na ion on flux pinning. The ac susceptibility curves (acs) as well as the hysteresis loops were measured for the samples. Then the effective pinning energy (U(T,Hdc,J)), irreversibility line (Hirr(T)) and critical current density (jc(Hdc)) were determined, where T, Hdc and J are temperature, dc magnetic field and current density, respectively. We found that, with Na doping, the Hirr(T) line shifted to lower temperature while the Jc(Hdc) and U(T,Hdc,J) became smaller. It indicates that the Na ions play a negative role in the flux pinning of YBCO. The appearance of the second peak in the Jc(Hdc) curves and the enhancement of anisotropy in YBNCO further support this finding.

Effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of magnesium diboride

We discuss the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the superconducting properties of MgB$_{2}$ within the framework of Eliashberg theory. By considering the pressure dependences of all parameters appearing in the McMillan formula, we show that the calculated pressure derivative of $T_{c}$ as well as the variation of $T_{c}$ with pressure are in good agreement with recent measurements. The pressure dependences of the energy gap $Δ_{0}$, the effective interaction strength $N(E_{F})v$, the critical magnetic field $H_{c}(0)$, and the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ are also predicted for this system. A comparison of pressure effect in non-transition elements clearly suggests that MgB$_{2}$ is an electron-phonon mediated superconductor.

Strain effect on electronic transport and ferromagnetic transition temperature in La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films

We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E_{P}$ is reduced with the decrease of film thickness. We found that the strain dependence of $T_{c}$ mainly results from the strain-induced electron-phonon coupling. The strain effect on $E_{P}$ is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

A series representation of the nonlinear equation for axisymmetrical fluid membrane shape

Whatever the fluid lipid vesicle is modeled as the spontaneous-curvature, bilayer-coupling, or the area-difference elasticity, and no matter whether a pulling axial force applied at the vesicle poles or not, a universal shape equation presents when the shape has both axisymmetry and up-down symmetry. This equation is a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation about the sine $sinψ(r)$ of the angle $ψ(r)$ between the tangent of the contour and the radial axis $r$. However, analytically there is not a generally applicable method to solve it, while numerically the angle $ψ(0)$ can not be obtained unless by tricky extrapolation for $r=0$ is a singular point of the equation. We report an infinite series representation of the equation, in which the known solutions are some special cases, and a new family of shapes related to the membrane microtubule formation, in which $sinψ(0)$ takes values from 0 to $π/2$, is given.

Unification Yang-Mills Groups and Representations with CP as a Gauge Symmetry

We investigate more generally the possible unification Yang-Mills groups $G_{YM}$ and representations with CP as a gauge symmetry. Besides the possible Yang-Mills groups $E_8$, $E_7$, $SO(2n+1)$, $SO(4n)$, $SP(2n)$, $G_2$ or $F_4$ (or a product of them) which only allow self-contragredient representations, we present other unification groups $G_{YM}$ and representations which may allow CP as a gauge symmetry. These include especially $SU(N)$ containing Weyl fermions and their CP-conjugates from low-energy spectra in a basic irreducible representation (IR). Such an example is the 496-dimensional basic IR (on antisymmetric tensors of rank two) of $SU(32)$ containing $SO(32)$ as a subgroup in the adjoint IR, or $SU(248)$ in a fundamental IR containing $E_8$ as a subgroup in the adjoint IR. Our consideration also leads to the construction of a physical operator (CP) intrincially as an inner automorphism of order higher than two for the unification group. We have also generalized the possible groups as unification $G_{YM}$ to include non-semisimple Lie groups with CP arising as a gauge symmetry. In this case with $U(1)$ ideals in the $G_{YM}$, we found that the $U_Y(1)$ for weak hypercharge in the standard model or a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry at low energies in general is traceless. Possible relevance to superstring theory is also briefly discussed. We expect that our results may open new alternatives for unified model building, especially with deeper or more generalized understanding of anomaly-free theories.

Long-Ranged Orientational Order in Dipolar Fluids

Recently Groh and Dietrich claimed the thermodynamic state of a dipolar fluid depends on the shape of the fluid's container. For example, a homogeneous fluid in a short fat container would phase separate when transferred to a tall skinny container of identical volume and temperature. Their calculation thus lacks a thermodynamic limit. We show that removal of demagnetizing fields restores the true, shape independent, thermodynamic limit. As a consequence, spontaneously magnetized liquids display inhomogeneous magnetization textures.
