Global-in-time energy stability: a powerful analysis tool for the gradient flow problem without maximum principle or Lipschitz assumption

Before proving (unconditional) energy stability for gradient flows, most existing studies either require a strong Lipschitz condition regarding the non-linearity or certain $L^{\infty}$ bounds on the numerical solutions (the maximum principle). However, proving energy stability without such premises is a very challenging task. In this paper, we aim to develop a novel analytical tool, namely global-in-time energy stability, to demonstrate energy dissipation without assuming any strong Lipschitz condition or $L^{\infty}$ boundedness. The fourth-order-in-space Swift-Hohenberg equation is used to elucidate the theoretical results in detail. We also propose a temporal second-order accurate scheme for efficiently solving such a strongly stiff equation. Furthermore, we present the corresponding optimal $L^2$ error estimate and provide several numerical simulations to demonstrate the dynamics.

Separated Pairs of Submodules in Hilbert $C^*$-modules

We introduce the notion of the separated pair of closed submodules in the setting of Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We demonstrate that even in the case of Hilbert spaces this concept has several nice characterizations enriching the theory of separated pairs of subspaces in Hilbert spaces. Let $\mathscr H$ and $\mathscr K$ be orthogonally complemented closed submodules of a Hilbert $C^*$-module $\mathscr E$. We establish that $ (\mathscr H,\mathscr K)$ is a separated pair in $\mathscr{E}$ if and only if there are idempotents $Π_1$ and $Π_2$ such that $Π_1Π_2=Π_2Π_1=0$ and $\mathscr R(Π_1)=\mathscr H$ and $\mathscr R(Π_2)=\mathscr K$. We show that $\mathscr R(Π_1+λΠ_2)$ is closed for each $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ if and only if $\mathscr R(Π_1+Π_2)$ is closed. We use the localization of Hilbert $C^*$-modules to define the angle between closed submodules. We prove that if $(\mathscr H^\perp,\mathscr K^\perp)$ is concordant, then $(\mathscr H^{\perp\perp},\mathscr K^{\perp\perp})$ is a separated pair if the cosine of this angle is less than one. We also present some surprising examples to illustrate our results.

Scalable cyclic transformation of orbital angular momentum modes based on a nonreciprocal Mach-Zehnder interferometer

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons provides a pivotal resource for carrying out high-dimensional classical and quantum information processing due to its unique discrete high-dimensional nature. The cyclic transformation of a set of orthogonal OAM modes is an essential building block for universal high-dimensional information processing. Its realization in the quantum domain is the universal quantum Pauli-X gate. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a cyclic transformation of six OAM modes with an averaged efficiency higher than 96% by exploiting a nonreciprocal Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Our system is simple and can, in principle, be scaled to more modes. By improving phase stabilization and inputting quantum photonic states, this method can perform universal single-photon quantum Pauli-X gate, thus paving the way for scalable high-dimensional quantum computation.

HOD-Dependent Systematics in Emission Line Galaxies for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will provide precise measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) to constrain the expansion history of the Universe and set stringent constraints on dark energy. Therefore, precise control of the global error budget due to various systematic effects is required for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis. In this work, we focus on the robustness of the BAO analysis against the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) modeling for the Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) tracer. Based on a common dark matter simulation, our analysis relies on HOD mocks tuned to early DESI data, namely the One-Percent survey data. To build the mocks, we use several HOD models for the ELG tracer as well as extensions to the baseline HOD models. Among these extensions, we consider distinct recipes for galactic conformity and assembly bias. We perform two independent analyses in the Fourier space and in the configuration space. We recover the BAO signal from two-point measurements after performing reconstruction on our mocks. Additionally, we also apply the control variates technique to reduce sample variance noise. Our BAO analysis can recover the isotropic BAO parameter $α_\text{iso}$ within 0.1\% and the Alcock Paczynski parameter $α_\text{AP}$ within 0.3\%. Overall, we find that our systematic error due to the HOD dependence is below 0.17\%, with the Fourier space analysis being more robust against the HOD systematics. We conclude that our analysis pipeline is robust enough against the HOD systematics for the ELG tracer in the DESI 2024 BAO analysis.

A Strategy Transfer and Decision Support Approach for Epidemic Control in Experience Shortage Scenarios

Epidemic outbreaks can cause critical health concerns and severe global economic crises. For countries or regions with new infectious disease outbreaks, it is essential to generate preventive strategies by learning lessons from others with similar risk profiles. A Strategy Transfer and Decision Support Approach (STDSA) is proposed based on the profile similarity evaluation. There are four steps in this method: (1) The similarity evaluation indicators are determined from three dimensions, i.e., the Basis of National Epidemic Prevention & Control, Social Resilience, and Infection Situation. (2) The data related to the indicators are collected and preprocessed. (3) The first round of screening on the preprocessed dataset is conducted through an improved collaborative filtering algorithm to calculate the preliminary similarity result from the perspective of the infection situation. (4) Finally, the K-Means model is used for the second round of screening to obtain the final similarity values. The approach will be applied to decision-making support in the context of COVID-19. Our results demonstrate that the recommendations generated by the STDSA model are more accurate and aligned better with the actual situation than those produced by pure K-means models. This study will provide new insights into preventing and controlling epidemics in regions that lack experience.

The Tribal Theater Model: Social Regulation for Dynamic User Adaptation in Virtual Interactive Environments

This paper proposes a social regulation model for dynamic adaptation according to user characteristics in virtual interactive environments, namely the tribal theater model. The model focuses on organizational regulation and builds an interaction scheme with more resilient user performance by improving the subjectivity of the user. This paper discusses the sociological theoretical basis of this model and how it was migrated to an engineering implementation of a virtual interactive environment. The model defines user interactions within a field that are regulated by a matrix through the allocation of resources. To verify the effectiveness of the tribal theater model, we designed an experimental scene using a chatroom as an example. We trained the matrix as an AI model using a temporal transformer and compared it with an interaction field with different levels of control. The experimental results showed that the tribal theater model can improve users' interactive experience, enhance resilient user performance, and effectively complete environmental interaction tasks under rule-based interaction.

VCounselor: A Psychological Intervention Chat Agent Based on a Knowledge-Enhanced Large Language Model

Conversational artificial intelligence can already independently engage in brief conversations with clients with psychological problems and provide evidence-based psychological interventions. The main objective of this study is to improve the effectiveness and credibility of the large language model in psychological intervention by creating a specialized agent, the VCounselor, to address the limitations observed in popular large language models such as ChatGPT in domain applications. We achieved this goal by proposing a new affective interaction structure and knowledge-enhancement structure. In order to evaluate VCounselor, this study compared the general large language model, the fine-tuned large language model, and VCounselor's knowledge-enhanced large language model. At the same time, the general large language model and the fine-tuned large language model will also be provided with an avatar to compare them as an agent with VCounselor. The comparison results indicated that the affective interaction structure and knowledge-enhancement structure of VCounselor significantly improved the effectiveness and credibility of the psychological intervention, and VCounselor significantly provided positive tendencies for clients' emotions. The conclusion of this study strongly supports that VConselor has a significant advantage in providing psychological support to clients by being able to analyze the patient's problems with relative accuracy and provide professional-level advice that enhances support for clients.

Efficient InGaN-based Red Light-Emitting Diodes by Modulating Trench Defects

Trench defects in multi-quantum wells (MQWs) have been considered as flawed structures that severely degrade the internal quantum efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the past. In this research, trench defects are innovatively modulated into the structure to enhance the efficiency of red InGaN LEDs. Specifically, dual-color MQWs structures are grown with green MQWs at the bottom and red MQWs at the top. When high-density trench defects are introduced into the green MQWs, the upper red MQWs exhibit a significant wavelength redshift of 68 nm and approximately 6-fold luminescence enhancement compared to those without trench defects. The wavelength redshift is attributed to the increased indium incorporation due to the strain relaxation effect of trench defects. Moreover, the luminescence enhancement originates from the strong emission of the red MQWs inside trench defects. The mechanisms behind the superior luminescent properties of red MQWs within trench defects are explored in detail. Red InGaN LEDs with an internal quantum efficiency of 16.4% are achieved by modulating the trench defects. The method of achieving InGaN-based red emission by introducing trench defects is simple and reproducible, requiring no additional substrate designs. This research provides a novel pathway toward achieving high-efficiency red InGaN LEDs.

A demonstrator for a real-time AI-FPGA-based triggering system for sPHENIX at RHIC

The RHIC interaction rate at sPHENIX will reach around 3 MHz in pp collisions and requires the detector readout to reject events by a factor of over 200 to fit the DAQ bandwidth of 15 kHz. Some critical measurements, such as heavy flavor production in pp collisions, often require the analysis of particles produced at low momentum. This prohibits adopting the traditional approach, where data rates are reduced through triggering on rare high momentum probes. We explore a new approach based on real-time AI technology, adopt an FPGA-based implementation using a custom designed FELIX-712 board with the Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale FPGA, and deploy the system in the detector readout electronics loop for real-time trigger decision.

$^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,1\thicksim9$) Reaction Cross Section Measurements using Laser-Driven Ultra-Intense $γ$-Ray Source

We present a new method for the measurements of photonuclear reaction flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios using a laser-driven bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source. An ultra-bright ultra-fast 60$\,\thicksim\,$250 MeV bremsstrahlung $γ$-ray source was established using the 200 TW laser facility in the Compact Laser Plasma Accelerator Laboratory, Peking University, which could cover the energy range from knocking out neutrons to producing pions. Stable quasi-monoenergetic electron beams were generated via laser wakefield acceleration with a charge of 300$\,\thicksim\,$600 pC per shot. The averaged $γ$-ray intensities ($\geqslant$8 MeV) were higher than 10$^{8}$ per shot and the instantaneous intensities can reach above 10$^{19}$ s$^{-1}$ with a duration time about 6.7 ps. $^{65}$Cu($γ,\,n$)$^{64}$Cu and $^{27}$Al($γ,\,x$)$^{24}$Na reactions were used as $γ$-ray flux monitors in the experiments. The flux-weighted average cross sections and isomeric ratios of $^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,1\thicksim9$) reactions were analyzed through activation measurements. The results showed good agreement with previous works and proved this method to be accurate. The $^{197}$Au($γ,\,xn;\,x\,=\,7\thicksim\,9$) reaction cross sections were first achieved with the highest threshold energy of 71.410 MeV. Theoretical cross sections of TALYS 1.9 were calculated to compare with experiment results. This method offered a unique way of gaining insight into photonuclear reaction research, especially for short-lived isomers which extremely lack experimental data.

Quantum K theory rings of partial flag manifolds

In this paper we use three-dimensional gauged linear sigma models to make physical predictions for Whitney-type presentations of equivariant quantum K theory rings of partial flag manifolds, as quantum products of universal subbundles and various ratios, extending previous work for Grassmannians. Physically, these arise as OPEs of Wilson lines for certain Chern-Simons levels. We also include a simplified method for computing Chern-Simons levels pertinent to standard quantum K theory.

Precise lifetime measurement of $^4_Λ$H hypernucleus using in-flight $^4$He$(K^-, π^0)^4_Λ$H reaction

We present a new measurement of the $^4_Λ$H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight $K^-$ + $^4$He $\rightarrow$ $^4_Λ$H + $π^0$ reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the $γ$-ray energy decayed from $π^0$. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from ($K^-$, $π^-$) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the $^4_Λ$H lifetime, $τ(^4_Λ\mathrm{H}) = 206 \pm 8 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 12 (\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{ps}$, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton ($^3_Λ$H) using the same setup in the near future.

Interpretable Symbolic Regression for Data Science: Analysis of the 2022 Competition

Symbolic regression searches for analytic expressions that accurately describe studied phenomena. The main attraction of this approach is that it returns an interpretable model that can be insightful to users. Historically, the majority of algorithms for symbolic regression have been based on evolutionary algorithms. However, there has been a recent surge of new proposals that instead utilize approaches such as enumeration algorithms, mixed linear integer programming, neural networks, and Bayesian optimization. In order to assess how well these new approaches behave on a set of common challenges often faced in real-world data, we hosted a competition at the 2022 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference consisting of different synthetic and real-world datasets which were blind to entrants. For the real-world track, we assessed interpretability in a realistic way by using a domain expert to judge the trustworthiness of candidate models. We present an in-depth analysis of the results obtained in this competition, discuss current challenges of symbolic regression algorithms and highlight possible improvements for future competitions.

Large spin splitting and piezoelectricity in a two-dimensional topological insulator Al$_2$SbBi with double-layer honeycomb structure

Two-dimensional materials provide remarkable platforms to uncover intriguing quantum phenomena and develop nanoscale devices of versatile applications. Recently, AlSb in the double-layer honeycomb (DLHC) structure was successfully synthesized exhibiting a semiconducting nature [ACS Nano 15, 8184 (2021)], which corroborates the preceding theoretical predictions and stimulates the exploration of new robust DLHC materials. In this work, we propose a Janus DLHC monolayer Al$_2$SbBi, the dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stabilities of which are confirmed by first-principles calculations. Monolayer Al$_2$SbBi is found to be a nontrivial topological insulator with a gap of about 0.2 eV, which presents large spin splitting and peculiar spin texture in the valence bands. Furthermore, due to the absence of inversion symmetry, monolayer Al$_2$SbBi exhibits piezoelectricity and the piezoelectric strain coefficients d$_{11}$ and d$_{31}$ are calculated to be 7.97 pm/V and 0.33 pm/V, respectively, which are comparable to and even larger than those of many piezoelectric materials. Our study suggests that monolayer Al$_2$SbBi has potential applications in spintronic and piezoelectric devices.

Fully-gapped superconductivity and topological aspects of the noncentrosymmetric TaReSi superconductor

We report a study of the noncentrosymmetric TaReSi superconductor by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) technique, complemented by electronic band-structure calculations. Its superconductivity, with $T_c$ = 5.5 K and upper critical field $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2}(0)$ $\sim$ 3.4 T, was characterized via electrical-resistivity- and magnetic-susceptibility measurements. The temperature-dependent superfluid density, obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state in TaReSi, with an energy gap $Δ_0$ = 0.79 meV and a magnetic penetration depth $λ_0$ = 562 nm. The absence of a spontaneous magnetization below $T_c$, as confirmed by zero-field $μ$SR, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. The density of states near the Fermi level is dominated by the Ta- and Re-5$d$ orbitals, which account for the relatively large band splitting due to the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. In its normal state, TaReSi behaves as a three-dimensional Kramers nodal-line semimetal, characterized by an hourglass-shaped dispersion protected by glide reflection. By combining non\-triv\-i\-al electronic bands with intrinsic superconductivity, TaReSi is a promising material for investigating the topological aspects of noncentrosymmetric superconductors.

Two-dimensional Thomson scattering in high-repetition-rate laser-plasma experiments

We present the first two-dimensional (2D) optical Thomson scattering measurements of electron density and temperature in laser-produced plasmas. The novel instrument directly measures $n_e(x,y)$ and $T_e(x,y)$ in two dimensions over large spatial regions (cm$^2$) with sub-mm spatial resolution, by automatically translating the scattering volume while the plasma is produced repeatedly by irradiating a solid target with a high-repetition-rate laser beam (10 J, $\sim$10$^{12}$ W/cm$^2$, 1 Hz). In this paper, we describe the design and auto-alignment of the instrument, and the computerized fitting algorithm of the spectral distribution function to large data-sets of measured scattering spectra, as they transition from the collective to the non-collective regime with distance from the target. As an example, we present 2D scattering measurements in laser driven shock waves in ambient nitrogen gas at a pressure of 95 mTorr.

Fully-gapped superconductivity with preserved time-reversal symmetry in NiBi$_3$ single crystals

We report a study of NiBi$_3$ single crystals by means of electrical-resistivity-, magnetization-, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. As a single crystal, NiBi$_3$ adopts a needle-like shape and exhibits bulk superconductivity with $T_c \approx 4.1$ K. By applying magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the $b$-axis of NiBi$_3$, we establish that its lower- and upper critical fields, as well as the magnetic penetration depths show slightly different values, suggesting a weakly anisotropic superconductivity. In both cases, the zero-temperature upper critical fields are much smaller than the Pauli-limit value, indicating that the superconducting state is constrained by the orbital pair breaking. The temperature evolution of the superfluid density, obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR, reveals a fully-gapped superconductivity in NiBi$_3$, with a shared superconducting gap $Δ_0$ = 2.1 $k_\mathrm{B}$$T_c$ and magnetic penetration depths $λ_0$ = 223 and 210 nm for $H \parallel b$- and $H \perp b$, respectively. The lack of spontaneous fields below $T_c$ indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in NiBi$_3$. The absence of a fast muon-spin relaxation and/or precession in the zero-field $μ$SR spectra definitely rules out any type of magnetic ordering in NiBi$_3$ single crystals. Overall, our investigation suggests that NiBi$_3$ behaves as a conventional $s$-type superconductor.

Solitary wave billiards

In the present work we explore the concept of solitary wave billiards. I.e., instead of a point particle, we examine a solitary wave in an enclosed region and explore its collision with the boundaries and the resulting trajectories in cases which for particle billiards are known to be integrable and for cases that are known to be chaotic. A principal conclusion is that solitary wave billiards are generically found to be chaotic even in cases where the classical particle billiards are integrable. However, the degree of resulting chaoticity depends on the particle speed and on the properties of the potential. Furthermore, the nature of the scattering of the deformable solitary wave particle is elucidated on the basis of a negative Goos-Hänchen effect which, in addition to a trajectory shift, also results in an effective shrinkage of the billiard domain.
