Niobium telluride absorber for a mode-locked vector soliton fiber laser

Niobium telluride (NbTe$_2$), an emerging transition metal dichalcogenide material, has been theoretically predicted to have nonlinear absorption properties and excellent optical response. However, only a few studies of the utilization of NbTe$_2$ in ultrafast photonics have been reported. In this work, a NbTe$_2$-based saturable absorber (SA) was applied in an erbium-doped fiber as a mode-locked device, and a vector soliton based on NbTe$_2$ was obtained for the first time. NbTe$_2$-PVA film SA was successfully prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation and spin coating methods, with a modulation depth of up to 10.87%. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of NbTe$_2$-based SA film tested through the open-aperture Z-scan laser measurement is 0.62. A conventional soliton with a pulse duration of 858 fs was generated using NbTe$_2$-based SA, which was demonstrated to be a kind of polarization-locked vector soliton in further investigation. Our experimental results reveal the nonlinear optical properties of NbTe$_2$ and broaden its applications in ultrafast photonic devices.

Structural Origin of Recovered Ferroelectricity in BaTiO$_3$ Nanoparticles

Nanoscale BaTiO3 particles (approximately 10 nm) prepared by ball-milling a mixture of oleic acid and heptane have been reported to have an electric polarization several times larger than that for bulk BaTiO3. In this work, detailed local, intermediate, and long-range structural studies are combined with spectroscopic measurements to develop a model structure of these materials. The X-ray spectroscopic measurements reveal large Ti off-centering as the key factor producing the large spontaneous polarization in the nanoparticles. Temperature-dependent lattice parameter changes reveal the sharpening of the structural phase transitions in these BaTiO3 nanoparticles compared to the pure nanoparticle systems. Sharp crystalline-type peaks in the barium oleate Raman spectra suggest that this component in the composite core-shell matrix, a product of mechanochemical synthesis, stabilizes an enhanced polar structural phase of the BaTiO3 core nanoparticles.

Regulating electron diffraction direction with cylindrically symmetric rotating crystal

We report a promising InSiO film that allows simultaneous observation of sample morphology and Kikuchi patterns in raster scan mode of scanning electron microscopy. This new experimental observation suggests potential mechanism beyond existing diffraction theories. We find by simulation that this material has a novel cylindrically symmetric rotational crystalline structure that can control the diffraction direction of electrons through a specific rotational distribution of crystal planes, while being independent of the angle and energy of incident electrons within a certain range.

Precise dynamical masses of new directly imaged companions from combining relative astrometry, radial velocities, and Hipparcos-Gaia eDR3 accelerations

Aims. With an observing time span of more than 20 years, the CORALIE radial-velocity survey is able to detect long-term trends in data corresponding to companions with masses and separations accessible to direct imaging. Combining exoplanet detection techniques such as radial velocities from the CORALIE survey, astrometric accelerations from Hipparcos and Gaia eDR3, and relative astrometry from direct imaging, removes the degeneracy of unknown orbital parameters. This allows precise model-independent masses of detected companions to be derived, which provides a powerful tool to test models of stellar and substellar mass-luminosity relations. Methods. Long-term precise Doppler measurements with the CORALIE spectrograph reveal radial-velocity signatures of companions on long-period orbits. The long baseline of radial-velocity data allows the detectability of such companion candidates to be assessed with direct imaging. We combine long-period radial-velocity data with absolute astrometry from Hipparcos and Gaia eDR3 and relative astrometry derived from new direct imaging detections with VLT/SPHERE to fit orbital parameters and derive precise dynamical masses of these companions. Results. In this paper we report the discovery of new companions orbiting HD~142234, HD~143616, and HIP~22059, as well as the first direct detection of HD~92987~B, and update the dynamical masses of two previously directly imaged companions; HD~157338~B and HD~195010~B. The companions span a period range of 32 to 279 years and are all very low mass stellar companions, ranging from 218 to 487~$M_{\rm{Jup}}$. We compare the derived dynamical masses to mass-luminosity relations of very low mass stars (<0.5~$M_{\odot}$), and discuss the importance of using precursor radial-velocity and astrometric information to inform the future of high-contrast imaging of exoplanets and brown dwarfs

Evidence of unconventional pairing in the quasi two-dimensional CuIr$_2$Te$_4$ superconductor

The CuIr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Te$_4$ superconductors (with a $T_c$ around 2.8 K) can host charge-density waves, whose onset and interplay with superconductivity are not well known at a microscopic level. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the $x$ = 0 and 0.05 cases, whose superconductivity was characterized via electrical-resistivity-, magnetization-, and heat-capacity measurements, while their microscopic superconducting properties were studied via muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR). In CuIr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Te$_4$, both the temperature-dependent electronic specific heat and the superfluid density (determined via transverse-field $μ$SR) are best described by a two-gap (s+d)-wave model, comprising a nodeless gap and a gap with nodes. The multigap superconductivity is also supported by the temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_\mathrm{c2}(T)$. However, under applied pressure, a charge-density-wave order starts to develop and, as a consequence, the superconductivity of CuIr$_2$Te$_4$ achieves a more conventional s-wave character. From a series of experiments, we provide ample evidence that the CuIr$_{2-x}$Ru$_x$Te$_4$ family belongs to the rare cases, where an unconventional superconducting pairing is found near a charge-density-wave quantum critical point.

Quantum-improved phase estimation with a displacement-assisted SU(1,1) interferometer

By performing two local displacement operations (LDOs) inside an SU(1,1) interferometer, called as the displacement-assisted SU(1,1) [DSU(1,1)], both the phase sensitivity based on homodyne detection and quantum Fisher information (QFI) with and without photon losses are investigated in this paper. In this DSU(1,1) interferometer, we focus our attention on the extent to which the introduced LDO affects the phase sensitivity and the QFI, even in the realistic scenario. Our analyses show that the estimation performance of DSU(1,1) interferometer is always better than that of SU(1,1) interferometer without the LDO, especially the phase precision of the former in the ideal scenario gradually approaching to the Heisenberg limit via the increase of the LDO strength. More significantly, different from the latter, the robustness of the former can be enhanced markedly by regulating and controlling the LDO. Our findings would open an useful view for quantum-improved phase estimation of optical interferometers.

Deep underground laboratory measurement of $^{13}$C($α$,$n$)$^{16}$O in the Gamow windows of the $s$- and $i$-processes

The $^{13}$C($α$,$n$)$^{16}$O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture (s-) process in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and for the intermediate (i-) process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of $E_{\rm c.m.}=$0.24 MeV to 1.9 MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire i-process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60\% down to 15\%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing data sets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the s- and i-processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.

Snowmass21 Accelerator Modeling Community White Paper

After a summary of relevant comments and recommendations from various reports over the last ten years, this paper examines the modeling needs in accelerator physics, from the modeling of single beams and individual accelerator elements, to the realization of virtual twins that replicate all the complexity to model a particle accelerator complex as accurately as possible. We then discuss cutting-edge and emerging computing opportunities, such as advanced algorithms, AI/ML and quantum computing, computational needs in hardware, software performance, portability and scalability, and needs for scalable I/O and in-situ analysis. Considerations of reliability, long-term sustainability, user support and training are considered next, before discussing the benefits of ecosystems with integrated workflows based on standardized input and output, and with integrated frameworks and data repositories developed as a community. Last, we highlight how the community can work more collaboratively and efficiently through the development of consortia and centers, and via collaboration with industry.

Banach fixed-point between SEM image and EBSD diffraction pattern from a cylindrically symmetric rotating crystal

The Kikuchi bands arise from Bragg diffraction of incoherent electrons scattered within a crystalline specimen and can be observed in both the transmission and reflection modes of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Converging, rocking, or grazing incidence beams must be used to generate divergent electron sources to obtain the Kikuchi pattern. This paper report the observation of Kikuchi pattern from SEM images of an exceptional rotating crystal with continuous rotation in the local crystal direction and satisfying cylindrical symmetry, named a cylindrically symmetric rotating crystal. SEM images of cylindrically symmetric rotating crystals reflect the interactions between electrons and the sample in both the real- and momentum-space. Furthermore, we identify an unexpected mathematical relationship between the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) Kikuchi pattern matrix map and the SEM image of the present sample which can be rationalized as a concrete example of the Banach fixed-point theorems in the field of EBSD technique.

Acceleration of 60 MeV proton beams in the commissioning experiment of SULF-10 PW laser

We report the experimental results of the commissioning phase in the 10 PW laser beamline of Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF). The peak power reaches 2.4 PW on target without the last amplifying during the experiment. The laser energy of 72\pm 9 J is directed to a focal spot of ~6 μm diameter (FWHM) in 30 fs pulse duration, yielding a focused peak intensity around 2.0 \times 10^{21} W/cm^2. First laser-proton acceleration experiment is performed using plain copper and plastic targets. High-energy proton beams with maximum cut-off energy up to 62.5 MeV are achieved using copper foils at the optimum target thickness of 4 μm via target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). For plastic targets of tens of nanometers thick, the proton cut-off energy is approximately 20 MeV, showing ring-like or filamented density distributions. These experimental results reflect the capabilities of the SULF-10 PW beamline, e.g., both ultrahigh intensity and relatively good beam contrast. Further optimization for these key parameters is underway, where peak laser intensities of 10^{22}-10^{23} W/cm^2 are anticipated to support various experiments on extreme field physics.

Fully-gapped superconducting state in interstitial-carbon-doped Zr5Pt3

We report a comprehensive study of the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$ superconductors, with interstitial carbon comprised between 0 and 0.3. At a macroscopic level, their superconductivity, with $T_c$ ranging from 4.5 to 6.3 K, was investigated via electrical-resistivity-, magnetic-susceptibility-, and specific-heat measurements. The upper critical fields $μ_0H_\mathrm{c2}$ $\sim$ 7 T were determined mostly from measurements of the electrical resistivity in applied magnetic fields. The microscopic electronic properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. In the normal state, NMR relaxation data indicate an almost ideal metallic behavior, confirmed by band-structure calculations, which suggest a relatively high electronic density of states at the Fermi level, dominated by the Zr 4$d$ orbitals. The low-temperature superfluid density, obtained via transverse-field $μ$SR, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state in Zr$_5$Pt$_3$ and Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_{0.3}$, with a zero-temperature gap $Δ_0$ = 1.20 and 0.60 meV and a magnetic penetration depth $λ_0$ = 333 and 493 nm, respectively. The exponential dependence of the NMR relaxation rates below $T_c$ further supports a nodeless superconductivity. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of superconductivity, as determined from zero-field $μ$SR measurements, confirms a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$. In contrast to a previous study, our $μ$SR and NMR results suggest a conventional superconductivity in the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_x$ family, independent of the C content.

Electronic and magnetic properties of intermetallic Kagome magnets $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$ = Tb - Tm)

We present a systematic study of the structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of a new branch of intermetalllic compounds, $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$ = Tb - Tm) by using X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical transport, and heat-capacity measurements. These compounds feature a combination of a non-magnetic vanadium kagome sublattice and a magnetic rare-earth triangular sublattice that supports various spin anisotropies based on different $R$ ions. We find magnetic orders for the $R$ = Tb, Dy, and Ho compounds at 4.4, 3, 2.5 K, respectively, while no ordering is detected down to 0.4 K for the $R$ = Er and Tm compounds with easy-plane anisotropies. Electronically, we found no superconductivity or charge ordering transition down to 0.4 K for any member of this family, while all compounds exhibit multi-band transport properties that originate from the band topology of the vanadium kagome sublattice.

Branched flow of intense laser light in plasma with uneven density distribution

Branched flow is an interesting phenomenon that can occur in diverse systems. It is usually linear in the sense that the flow does not alter the medium properties. Branched flow of light on thin films was recently discovered. A question of interest is thus if nonlinear branched flow of light can also occur. Here we found using particle-in-cell simulations that with intense laser propagating in plasma with randomly uneven density distribution, photoionization by the laser can locally enhance the density variations along the laser paths and thus the branching of the laser. However, too-intense lasers can smooth the uneven electron density and suppress branching. The observed branching properties agree well with an analysis based on a Helmholtz equation for the laser electric field. Branched flow of intense laser in uneven plasma potentially opens up a new realm of intense laser-matter interaction.

Thermal and thermoelectric properties of an antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM-TI) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted intense attention, most of which lies on its electrical properties. In this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFM-TI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with non-zero Berry curvature of the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic state.

Controllable emergent spatial spin modulation in Sr2IrO4 by in situ shear strain

Symmetric anisotropic interaction can be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic at the same time but for different crystallographic axes. We show that inducing competition of anisotropic interactions of orthogonal irreducible representations represents a general route to obtain new exotic magnetic states. We demonstrate it here by observing the emergence of a continuously tunable 12-layer spatial spin modulation when distorting the square lattice planes in the quasi-2D antiferromagnetic Sr2IrO4 under in situ shear strain. This translation-symmetry-breaking phase is a result of an unusual strain activated anisotropic interaction which is at the 4th order and competing with the inherent quadratic anisotropic interaction. Such a mechanism of competing anisotropy is distinct from that among the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and/or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and it could be widely applicable and highly controllable in low dimensional magnets.

HAWC Study of the Ultra-High-Energy Spectrum of MGRO J1908+06

We report TeV gamma-ray observations of the ultra-high-energy source MGRO J1908+06 using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. This source is one of the highest-energy known gamma-ray sources, with emission extending past 200 TeV. Modeling suggests that the bulk of the TeV gamma-ray emission is leptonic in nature, driven by the energetic radio-faint pulsar PSR J1907+0602. Depending on what assumptions are included in the model, a hadronic component may also be allowed. Using the results of the modeling, we discuss implications for detection prospects by multi-messenger campaigns.

Pressure-induced monotonic enhancement of Tc to over 30 K in the superconducting Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films

The successful synthesis of superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films with the highest Tc ~ 15 K has reignited great enthusiasms on this family of potential analogue to high-Tc cuprates. Pursuing a higher Tc is always an imperative task in studying a new superconducting material system. Here we report high-quality Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films with Tconset ~ 17 K synthesized by carefully tuning the amount of CaH2 in the topological chemical reduction and the effect of pressure on its superconducting properties by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the onset temperature of the superconductivity, Tconset, can be enhanced monotonically from ~ 17 K at ambient pressure to ~ 31 K at 12.1 GPa without showing signatures of saturation upon increasing pressure. This encouraging result indicates that the Tc of infinite-layer nickelates superconductors still has room to go higher and it can be further boosted by applying higher pressures or strain engineering in the heterostructure films.

Spin order and fluctuations in the EuAl$_4$ and EuGa$_4$ topological antiferromagnets: A $μ$SR study

We report on systematic muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) studies of the magnetic properties of EuAl$_4$ and EuGa$_4$ single crystals at a microscopic level. Transverse-field $μ$SR measurements, spanning a wide temperature range (from 1.5 to 50 K), show clear bulk AFM transitions, with an almost 100% magnetic volume fraction in both cases. Zero-field $μ$SR measurements, covering both the AFM and the paramagnetic (PM) states, reveal internal magnetic fields $B_\mathrm{int}(0) = 0.33$ T and 0.89 T in EuAl$_4$ and EuGa$_4$, respectively. The transverse muon-spin relaxation rate $λ_\mathrm{T}$, a measure of the internal field distribution at the muon-stopping site, shows a contrasting behavior. In EuGa$_4$, it decreases with lowering the temperature, reaching its minimum at zero temperature, $λ_\mathrm{T}(0) = 0.71$ $μ$s$^{-1}$. In EuAl$_4$, it increases significantly below $T_\mathrm{N}$, to reach 58 $μ$s$^{-1}$ at 1.5 K, most likely reflecting the complex magnetic structure and the competing interactions in the AFM state of EuAl$_4$. In both compounds, the temperature-dependent longitudinal muon-spin relaxation $λ_\mathrm{L}(T)$, an indication of the rate of spin fluctuations, diverges near the onset of AFM order, followed by a significant drop at $T < T_\mathrm{N}$. In the AFM state, spin fluctuations are much stronger in EuAl$_4$ than in EuGa$_4$, while being comparable in the PM state. The evidence of robust spin fluctuations against the external magnetic fields provided by $μ$SR may offer new insights into the origin of the topological Hall effect and the possible magnetic skyrmions in the EuAl$_4$ and EuGa$_4$ compounds.
