Mobile Edge Computing Networks: Online Low-Latency and Fresh Service Provisioning

Edge service caching can significantly mitigate latency and reduce communication and computing overhead by fetching and initializing services (applications) from clouds. The freshness of cached service data is critical when providing satisfactory services to users, but has been overlooked in existing research efforts. In this paper, we study the online low-latency and fresh service provisioning in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. Specifically, we jointly optimize the service caching, task offloading, and resource allocation without knowledge of future system information, which is formulated as a joint online long-term optimization problem. This problem is NP-hard. To solve the problem, we design a Lyapunov-based online framework that decouples the problem at temporal level into a series of per-time-slot subproblems. For each subproblem, we propose an online integrated optimization-deep reinforcement learning (OIODRL) method, which contains an optimization stage including a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) transformation and a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method, and a learning stage including a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm. Extensive simulations show that the proposed OIODRL method achieves a near-optimal solution and outperforms other benchmark methods.

LightenDiffusion: Unsupervised Low-Light Image Enhancement with Latent-Retinex Diffusion Models

In this paper, we propose a diffusion-based unsupervised framework that incorporates physically explainable Retinex theory with diffusion models for low-light image enhancement, named LightenDiffusion. Specifically, we present a content-transfer decomposition network that performs Retinex decomposition within the latent space instead of image space as in previous approaches, enabling the encoded features of unpaired low-light and normal-light images to be decomposed into content-rich reflectance maps and content-free illumination maps. Subsequently, the reflectance map of the low-light image and the illumination map of the normal-light image are taken as input to the diffusion model for unsupervised restoration with the guidance of the low-light feature, where a self-constrained consistency loss is further proposed to eliminate the interference of normal-light content on the restored results to improve overall visual quality. Extensive experiments on publicly available real-world benchmarks show that the proposed LightenDiffusion outperforms state-of-the-art unsupervised competitors and is comparable to supervised methods while being more generalizable to various scenes. Our code is available at https://github.com/JianghaiSCU/LightenDiffusion.

Online Digital Twin-Empowered Content Resale Mechanism in Age of Information-Aware Edge Caching Networks

For users requesting popular contents from content providers, edge caching can alleviate backhaul pressure and enhance the quality of experience of users. Recently there is also a growing concern about content freshness that is quantified by age of information (AoI). Therefore, AoI-aware online caching algorithms are required, which is challenging because the content popularity is usually unknown in advance and may vary over time. In this paper, we propose an online digital twin (DT) empowered content resale mechanism in AoI-aware edge caching networks. We aim to design an optimal two-timescale caching strategy to maximize the utility of an edge network service provider (ENSP). The formulated optimization problem is non-convex and NP-hard. To tackle this intractable problem, we propose a DT-assisted Online Caching Algorithm (DT-OCA). In specific, we first decompose our formulated problem into a series of subproblems, each handling a cache period. For each cache period, we use a DT-based prediction method to effectively capture future content popularity, and develop online caching strategy. Competitive ratio analysis and extensive experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm has promising performance, and outperforms other benchmark algorithms. Insightful observations are also found and discussed.

A Hybrid Advertising Mode for Device Discovery in Bluetooth Low Energy Networks

Device discovery has a great impact on the performance of Bluetooth low energy (BLE). The performance of device discovery is highly related to the advertising mode. BLE has two advertising modes: pseudo-random delay advertising (RDA) and periodic deterministic advertising (PDA). Generally, PDA has low discovery latency but is susceptible to persistent collisions, whereas RDA does not suffer persistent collisions but has much larger discovery latency. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid advertising mode, called Deterministic and pseudo-Random delay Advertising (DRA), which has the advantages of both PDA and RDA. We develop an analytical model for DRA mode based on a two-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain, and analyze the expected discovery latency of DRA in a single-advertiser case and a multiple-advertiser case. Simulation shows the accuracy of our analytical model, and also verifies that DRA can achieve an excellent tradeoff between low discovery latency and robustness to collisions.

Optimal Configuration of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Arbitrary Discrete Phase Shifts

We address the reflection optimization problem for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), where the RIS elements feature a set of non-uniformly spaced discrete phase shifts. This is motivated by the actual behavior of practical RIS elements, where it is shown that a uniform phase shift assumption is not realistic. A problem is formulated to find the optimal refection amplitudes and reflection phase shifts of the RIS elements such that the channel capacity of the target user is maximized. We first prove that in the optimal configuration, each RIS element is either turned off or operates at maximum amplitude. We then develop a method that finds the optimal reflection amplitudes and phases with complexity linear in the number of RIS elements. Some new and interesting insight into the reflection optimization problem is also provided.

Low-Light Image Enhancement with Wavelet-based Diffusion Models

Diffusion models have achieved promising results in image restoration tasks, yet suffer from time-consuming, excessive computational resource consumption, and unstable restoration. To address these issues, we propose a robust and efficient Diffusion-based Low-Light image enhancement approach, dubbed DiffLL. Specifically, we present a wavelet-based conditional diffusion model (WCDM) that leverages the generative power of diffusion models to produce results with satisfactory perceptual fidelity. Additionally, it also takes advantage of the strengths of wavelet transformation to greatly accelerate inference and reduce computational resource usage without sacrificing information. To avoid chaotic content and diversity, we perform both forward diffusion and denoising in the training phase of WCDM, enabling the model to achieve stable denoising and reduce randomness during inference. Moreover, we further design a high-frequency restoration module (HFRM) that utilizes the vertical and horizontal details of the image to complement the diagonal information for better fine-grained restoration. Extensive experiments on publicly available real-world benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and visually, and it achieves remarkable improvements in efficiency compared to previous diffusion-based methods. In addition, we empirically show that the application for low-light face detection also reveals the latent practical values of our method. Joint Power Control and Data Size Selection for Over-the-Air Computation Aided Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) has emerged as an appealing machine learning approach to deal with massive raw data generated at multiple mobile devices, {which needs to aggregate the training model parameter of every mobile device at one base station (BS) iteratively}. For parameter aggregating in FL, over-the-air computation is a spectrum-efficient solution, which allows all mobile devices to transmit their parameter-mapped signals concurrently to a BS. Due to heterogeneous channel fading and noise, there exists difference between the BS's received signal and its desired signal, measured as the mean-squared error (MSE). To minimize the MSE, we propose to jointly optimize the signal amplification factors at the BS and the mobile devices as well as the data size (the number of data samples involved in local training) at every mobile device. The formulated problem is challenging to solve due to its non-convexity. To find the optimal solution, with some simplification on cost function and variable replacement, which still preserves equivalence, we transform the changed problem to be a bi-level problem equivalently. For the lower-level problem, optimal solution is found by enumerating every candidate solution from the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition. For the upper-level problem, the optimal solution is found by exploring its piecewise convexity. Numerical results show that our proposed method can greatly reduce the MSE and can help to improve the training performance of FL compared with benchmark methods.

Supervised Homography Learning with Realistic Dataset Generation

In this paper, we propose an iterative framework, which consists of two phases: a generation phase and a training phase, to generate realistic training data and yield a supervised homography network. In the generation phase, given an unlabeled image pair, we utilize the pre-estimated dominant plane masks and homography of the pair, along with another sampled homography that serves as ground truth to generate a new labeled training pair with realistic motion. In the training phase, the generated data is used to train the supervised homography network, in which the training data is refined via a content consistency module and a quality assessment module. Once an iteration is finished, the trained network is used in the next data generation phase to update the pre-estimated homography. Through such an iterative strategy, the quality of the dataset and the performance of the network can be gradually and simultaneously improved. Experimental results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and existing supervised methods can be also improved based on the generated dataset. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/JianghaiSCU/RealSH.

Performance of A Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Controlled by An Illegitimate User

In this paper, we investigate how an illegitimate user can use a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to maximally degrade the secrecy performance of the legitimate system. We first consider the case when the illegitimate user performs eavesdropping only. A problem is formulated to minimize the system secrecy rate by optimizing the phase shifts of the RIS elements. We also consider the case when the illegitimate user works with full-duplex technology and can perform eavesdropping and jamming simultaneously through the RIS. A problem is formulated to minimize the system secrecy rate by optimizing the jamming power and the phase shifts of the RIS elements. Although the two formulated problems are nonconvex, they are optimally solved in this paper. Our results show that good eavesdropping performance can be achieved by placing the RIS at an appropriate position. Further, jamming plus eavesdropping can largely reduce the secrecy rate of the legitimate system.

Energy-Delay Tradeoff in Helper-Assisted NOMA-MEC Systems: A Four-Sided Matching Algorithm

This paper designs a helper-assisted resource allocation strategy in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) systems, in order to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of the energy/delay-sensitive user equipments (UEs). To achieve a tradeoff between the energy consumption and the delay, we introduce a novel performance metric, called \emph{energy-delay tradeoff}, which is defined as the weighted sum of energy consumption and delay. The joint optimization of user association, resource block (RB) assignment, power allocation, task assignment, and computation resource allocation is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem with the aim of minimizing the maximal energy-delay tradeoff. Due to the non-convexity of the formulated problem with coupled and 0-1 variables, this problem cannot be directly solved with polynomial complexity. To tackle this challenge, we first decouple the formulated problem into a power allocation, task assignment and computation resource allocation (PATACRA) subproblem. Then, with the solution obtained from the PATACRA subproblem, we equivalently reformulate the original problem as a discrete user association and RB assignment (DUARA) problem. For the PATACRA subproblem, an iterative parametric convex approximation (IPCA) algorithm is proposed. Then, based on the solution obtained from the PATACRA subproblem, we first model the DUARA problem as a four-sided matching problem, and then propose a low-complexity four-sided UE-RB-helper-server matching (FS-URHSM) algorithm. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed algorithms are guaranteed to converge to stable solutions with polynomial complexity. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the superior performance of our proposed algorithm in terms of the energy consumption and the delay.

Semi-supervised Deep Large-baseline Homography Estimation with Progressive Equivalence Constraint

Homography estimation is erroneous in the case of large-baseline due to the low image overlay and limited receptive field. To address it, we propose a progressive estimation strategy by converting large-baseline homography into multiple intermediate ones, cumulatively multiplying these intermediate items can reconstruct the initial homography. Meanwhile, a semi-supervised homography identity loss, which consists of two components: a supervised objective and an unsupervised objective, is introduced. The first supervised loss is acting to optimize intermediate homographies, while the second unsupervised one helps to estimate a large-baseline homography without photometric losses. To validate our method, we propose a large-scale dataset that covers regular and challenging scenes. Experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in large-baseline scenes while keeping competitive performance in small-baseline scenes. Ambient Backscatter-Assisted Wireless-Powered Relaying

Internet-of-Things (IoT) is featured with low-power communications among a massive number of ubiquitously-deployed and energy-constrained electronics, e.g., sensors and actuators. To cope with the demand, wireless-powered cooperative relaying emerges as a promising communication paradigm to extend data transmission coverage and solve energy scarcity for the IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid relaying strategy by combining wireless-powered communication and ambient backscattering functions to improve applicability and performance of data transfer. In particular, the hybrid relay can harvest energy from radio frequency (RF) signals and use the energy for active transmission. Alternatively, the hybrid relay can choose to perform ambient backscattering of incident RF signals for passive transmission. To efficiently utilize the ambient RF resource, we design mode selection protocols to coordinate between the active and passive relaying in circumstances with and without instantaneous channel gain. With different mode selection protocols, we characterize the success probability and ergodic capacity of a dual-hop relaying system with the hybrid relay in the field of randomly located ambient transmitters. The analytical and the numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the mode selection protocols in adapting the hybrid relaying into the network environment and reveal the impacts of system parameters on the performance gain of the hybrid relaying. As applications of our analytical framework which is computationally tractable, we formulate optimization problems based on the derived expressions to optimize the system parameters with different objectives. The optimal solutions exhibit a tradeoff between the maximum energy efficiency and target success probability.

Secure Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access: An Interference Engineering Perspective

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is an efficient approach that can improve spectrum utilization and support massive connectivity for next-generation wireless networks. However, over a wireless channel, the superimposed NOMA signals are highly susceptible to eavesdropping, potentially leading to severe leakage of confidential information. In this article, we unleash the potential of network interference and exploit it constructively to enhance physical-layer security in NOMA networks. Particularly, three different types of network interference, including artificial noise, specifically-designed jamming signals, and inter-user interference, are well engineered to intentionally reduce information leakage while mitigating the effect on signal reception quality of legitimate users, thereby significantly enhancing the transmission security of NOMA. Furthermore, we propose interference engineering strategies for more advanced full-duplex NOMA, intelligent reflecting surface NOMA, cognitive radio NOMA, and multi-cell NOMA networks, and discuss several open research problems and challenges, which could inspire innovative interference engineering designs for secure NOMA communications.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS)-Enabled Covert Communications in Wireless Networks

With growing security threats to the evolving wireless systems, protecting user privacy becomes progressively challenging. Even if the transmitted information is encrypted and the potential wiretap channel is physically limited (e.g. through information-theoretic security approaches), the raw data itself, such as transmitter position and transmission pattern, could expose confidential information. In this context, covert communication that intends to hide the existence of transmission from an observant adversary by exploiting the physical characteristics of the wireless medium has been actively investigated. However, existing covertness techniques ineluctably consume additional resources such as bandwidth and energy, which burdens system deployment. In view of this concern, we propose an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-based approach to enhance communication covertness. The core idea is making use of a smartly controlled metasurface to reshape undesirable propagation conditions which could divulge secret messages. To facilitate the understanding of the proposed idea, we first provide an overview of the state-of-the-art covert communication techniques. Then, we introduce the fundamentals of IRS and elaborate on how an IRS can be integrated to benefit communication covertness. We also demonstrate a case study of the joint configuration of the IRS and the legitimate transmitter, which is of pivotal importance in designing an IRS-enhanced covert communication system. Finally, we shed light on some open research directions.

On Coverage Probability With Type-II HARQ in Large Uplink Cellular Networks

This letter studies uplink transmission in large-scale cellular networks with a Type-II hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) retransmission scheme, under which an unsuccessful transmission (if occurs) is combined with the corresponding retransmission through maximum-ratio combining (MRC) for decoding. Based on stochastic geometry analysis, the uplink coverage probabilities are characterized under a generalized power control scheme in the scenarios with quasi-static interference (QSI) and fast-varying interference (FVI), where the same or different interfering users are present during the transmission and retransmission phase, respectively. Our analytical expressions reveal some scaling properties of the coverage probabilities and can be used to evaluate the diversity gain of MRC (i.e., the ratio of the required signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) to achieve a target coverage probability with MRC to that without MRC). We show that the diversity gain of MRC is more remarkable in the scenario with QSI compared to that with FVI. Moreover, the diversity gain of MRC can be mostly exploited by adopting full channel-inversion power control.

Energy-Efficient Mobile-Edge Computation Offloading over Multiple Fading Blocks

By allowing a mobile device to offload computation-intensive tasks to a base station, mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising solution for saving the mobile device's energy. In real applications, the offloading may span multiple fading blocks. In this paper, we investigate energy-efficient offloading over multiple fading blocks with random channel gains. An optimization problem is formulated, which optimizes the amount of data for offloading to minimize the total expected energy consumption of the mobile device. Although the formulated optimization problem is non-convex, we prove that the objective function of the problem is piecewise convex, and accordingly develop an optimal solution for the problem. Numerical results verify the correctness of our findings and the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Cognitive Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Cooperative Relaying: A New Wireless Frontier for 5G Spectrum Sharing

Two emerging technologies towards 5G wireless networks, namely non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and cognitive radio (CR), will provide more efficient utilization of wireless spectrum in the future. In this article, we investigate the integration of NOMA with CR into a holistic system, namely cognitive NOMA network, for more intelligent spectrum sharing. Design principles of cognitive NOMA networks are perfectly aligned to functionality requirements of 5G wireless networks, such as high spectrum efficiency, massive connectivity, low latency, and better fairness. Three different cognitive NOMA architectures are presented, including underlay NOMA networks, overlay NOMA networks, and CR-inspired NOMA networks. To address inter- and intra-network interference which largely degrade the performance of cognitive NOMA networks, cooperative relaying strategies are proposed. For each cognitive NOMA architecture, our proposed cooperative relaying strategy shows its potential to significantly lower outage probabilities. Furthermore, we discuss open challenges and future research directions on implementation of cognitive NOMA networks.

Wireless-Powered Device-to-Device Communications with Ambient Backscattering: Performance Modeling and Analysis

The recent advanced wireless energy harvesting technology has enabled wireless-powered communications to accommodate wireless data services in a self-sustainable manner. However, wireless-powered communications rely on active RF signals to communicate, and result in high power consumption. On the other hand, ambient backscatter technology that passively reflects existing RF signal sources in the air to communicate has the potential to facilitate an implementation with ultra-low power consumption. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid D2D communication paradigm by integrating ambient backscattering with wireless-powered communications. The hybrid D2D communications are self-sustainable, as no dedicated external power supply is required. However, since the radio signals for energy harvesting and for backscattering come from the ambient, the performance of the hybrid D2D communications depends largely on environment factors, e.g., distribution, spatial density, and transmission load of ambient energy sources. Therefore, we design two mode selection protocols for the hybrid D2D transmitter, allowing a more flexible adaptation to the environment. We then introduce analytical models to characterize the impacts of the considered environment factors on the hybrid D2D communication performance. Together with extensive simulations, our analysis shows that the communication performance benefits from larger repulsion, transmission load and density of ambient energy sources. Further, we investigate how different mode selection mechanisms affect the communication performance.
