COph100: A comprehensive fundus image registration dataset from infants constituting the "RIDIRP" database

Retinal image registration is vital for diagnostic therapeutic applications within the field of ophthalmology. Existing public datasets, focusing on adult retinal pathologies with high-quality images, have limited number of image pairs and neglect clinical challenges. To address this gap, we introduce COph100, a novel and challenging dataset known as the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Retinal Image Registration dataset for infants with a wide range of image quality issues constituting the public "RIDIRP" database. COph100 consists of 100 eyes, each with 2 to 9 examination sessions, amounting to a total of 491 image pairs carefully selected from the publicly available dataset. We manually labeled the corresponding ground truth image points and provided automatic vessel segmentation masks for each image. We have assessed COph100 in terms of image quality and registration outcomes using state-of-the-art algorithms. This resource enables a robust comparison of retinal registration methodologies and aids in the analysis of disease progression in infants, thereby deepening our understanding of pediatric ophthalmic conditions.

Differential absorption ozone Lidar with 4H-SiC single-photon detectors

Differential absorption Lidar (DIAL) in the ultraviolet (UV) region is an effective approach for monitoring tropospheric ozone. 4H-SiC single-photon detectors (SPDs) are emergent devices for UV single-photon detection. Here, we demonstrate a 4H-SiC SPD-based ozone DIAL. We design and fabricate the 4H-SiC single-photon avalanche diode with a beveled mesa structure and optimized layer thickness. An active quenching circuit with a quenching time of 1.03 ns is developed to significantly mitigate the afterpulsing effect while enhancing the maximum count rate. After characterization, the SPD exhibits excellent performance with a photon detection efficiency of 16.6% at 266 nm, a dark count rate of 138 kcps, a maximum count rate of 13 Mcps, and an afterpulse probability of 2.7% at room temperature. Then, we apply two 4H-SiC SPDs in an ozone DIAL. The measured ozone concentrations at altitudes of 1-3.5 km agree well with the results of a commercial ozone DIAL. Our work provides an alternative solution for general UV Lidar applications.

Resonant Beam Enabled DoA Estimation in Passive Positioning System

The rapid advancement of the next generation of communications and internet of things (IoT) technologies has made the provision of location-based services for diverse devices an increasingly pressing necessity. Localizing devices with/without intelligent computing abilities, including both active and passive devices is essential, especially in indoor scenarios. For traditional RF positioning systems, aligning transmission signals and dealing with signal interference in complex environments are inevitable challenges. Therefore, this paper proposed a new passive positioning system, the RF-band resonant beam positioning system (RF-RBPS), which achieves energy concentration and beam alignment by amplifying echoes between the base station (BS) and the passive target (PT), without the need for complex channel estimation and time-consuming beamforming and provides high-precision direction of arrival (DoA) estimation for battery-free targets using the resonant mechanism. The direction information of the PT is estimated using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm at the end of BS. The feasibility of the proposed system is validated through theoretical analysis and simulations. Results indicate that the proposed RF-RBPS surpasses RF-band active positioning system (RF-APS) in precision, achieving millimeter-level precision at 2m within an elevation angle of 35$^\circ$, and an error of less than 3cm at 2.5m within an elevation angle of 35$^\circ$.

In-situ tunable giant electrical anisotropy in a grating gated AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas

Materials with in-plane electrical anisotropy have great potential for designing artificial synaptic devices. However, natural materials with strong intrinsic in-plane electrical anisotropy are rare. We introduce a simple strategy to produce extremely large electrical anisotropy via grating gating of a semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) of AlGaN/GaN. We show that periodically modulated electric potential in the 2DEG induces in-plane electrical anisotropy, which is significantly enhanced in a magnetic field, leading to an ultra large electrical anisotropy. This is induced by a giant positive magnetoresistance and a giant negative magnetoresistance under two orthogonally oriented in-plane current flows, respectively. This giant electrical anisotropy is in-situ tunable by tailoring both the grating gate voltage and the magnetic field. Our semiconductor device with controllable giant electrical anisotropy will stimulate new device applications, such as multi-terminal memtransistors and bionic synapses.

Reluctant Interaction Modeling in Generalized Linear Models

While including pairwise interactions in a regression model can better approximate response surface, fitting such an interaction model is a well-known difficult problem. In particular, analyzing contemporary high-dimensional datasets often leads to extremely large-scale interaction modeling problem, where the challenge is posed to identify important interactions among millions or even billions of candidate interactions. While several methods have recently been proposed to tackle this challenge, they are mostly designed by (1) assuming the hierarchy assumption among the important interactions and (or) (2) focusing on the case in linear models with interactions and (sub)Gaussian errors. In practice, however, neither of these two building blocks has to hold. In this paper, we propose an interaction modeling framework in generalized linear models (GLMs) which is free of any assumptions on hierarchy. We develop a non-trivial extension of the reluctance interaction selection principle to the GLMs setting, where a main effect is preferred over an interaction if all else is equal. Our proposed method is easy to implement, and is highly scalable to large-scale datasets. Theoretically, we demonstrate that it possesses screening consistency under high-dimensional setting. Numerical studies on simulated datasets and a real dataset show that the proposed method does not sacrifice statistical performance in the presence of significant computational gain.

Effects of impurity band on multiphoton photocurrent from InGaN and GaN photodetectors

Multiphoton absorption of wide band-gap semiconductors has shown great prospects in many fundamental researches and practical applications. With intensity-modulated femtosecond lasers by acousto-optic frequency shifters, photocurrents and yellow luminescence induced by two-photon absorption of InGaN and GaN photodetectors are investigated experimentally. Photocurrent from InGaN detector shows nearly perfect quadratic dependence on excitation intensity, while that in GaN detector shows cubic and higher order dependence. Yellow luminescence from both detectors show sub-quadratic dependence on excitation intensity. Highly nonlinear photocurrent from GaN is ascribed to absorption of additional photons by long-lived electrons in traps and impurity bands. Our investigation indicates that InGaN can serve as a superior detector for multiphoton absorption, absent of linear and higher order process, while GaN, which suffers from absorption by trapped electrons and impurity bands, must be used with caution.

Ultraviolet photon-counting single-pixel imaging

We demonstrate photon-counting single-pixel imaging in the ultraviolet region. Toward this target, we develop a high-performance compact single-photon detector based on a 4H-SiC single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), where a tailored readout circuit with active hold-off time is designed to restrain detector noise and operate the SPAD in free-running mode. We use structured illumination to reconstruct 192$\times$192 compressed images at a 4 fps frame rate. To show the superior capability of ultraviolet characteristics, we use our single-pixel imaging system to identify and distinguish different transparent objects under low-intensity irradiation, and image ultraviolet light sources. The results provide a practical solution for general ultraviolet imaging applications.

Free-running 4H-SiC single-photon detector with ultralow afterpulse probability at 266 nm

Ultraviolet single-photon detector (UVSPD) provides a key tool for the applications requiring ultraweak light detection in the wavelength band. Here, we report a 4H-SiC single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) based free-running UVSPD with ultralow afterpulse probability. We design and fabricate the 4H-SiC SPAD with a beveled mesa structure, which exhibits the characteristic of ultralow dark current. We further develop a readout circuit of passive quenching and active reset with tunable hold-off time setting to considerably suppress the afterpulsing effect. The nonuniformity of photon detection efficiency (PDE) across the SPAD active area with a diameter of $\sim$ 180 $\mu$m is investigated for performance optimization. The compact UVSPD is then characterized, exhibiting a typical performance of 10.3% PDE, 133 kcps dark count rate and 0.3% afterpulse probability at 266 nm. Such performance indicates that the compact UVSPD could be used for practical ultraviolet photon-counting applications

Symmetry-protected higher-order exceptional points in staggered flatband rhombic lattices

Higher-order exceptional points (EPs), which appear as multifold degeneracies in the spectra of non-Hermitian systems, are garnering extensive attention in various multidisciplinary fields. However, constructing higher-order EPs still remains as a challenge due to the strict requirement of the system symmetries. Here we demonstrate that higher-order EPs can be judiciously fabricated in PT -symmetric staggered rhombic lattices by introducing not only on-site gain/loss but also nonHermitian couplings. Zero-energy flatbands persist and symmetry-protected third-order EPs (EP3) arise in these systems owing to the non-Hermitian chiral/sublattice symmetry, but distinct phase transitions and propagation dynamics occur. Specifically, the EP3 arises at the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary in the presence of on-site gain/loss. The single-site excitations display an exponential power increase in the PT -broken phase. Meanwhile, a nearly flatband sustains when a small lattice perturbation is applied. For the lattices with non-Hermitian couplings, however, the EP3 appears at the BZ center. Quite remarkably, our analysis unveils a dynamical delocalization-localization transition for the excitation of the dispersive bands and a quartic power increase beyond the EP3. Our scheme provides a new platform towards the investigation of the higher-order EPs, and can be further extended to the study of topological phase transitions or nonlinear processes associated with higher-order EPs.

Time Resolution of the 4H-SiC PIN Detector

We address the determination of the time resolution for the $\rm 100~μm$ 4H-SiC PIN detectors fabricated by Nanjing University (NJU). The time response to $\rm β$ particles from a $\rm ^{90}$Sr source is investigated for the detection of the minimum ionizing particles (MIPs). We study the influence of different reverse voltages, which correspond to different carrier velocities and device sizes, and how this correlates with the detector capacitance. We determine a time resolution $\rm (94\pm1)~ps$ for $\rm 100~μm$ 4H-SiC PIN detector. A fast simulation software, termed RASER (RAdiation SEmiconductoR), is developed, and validated by comparing the waveform obtained from simulated and measured data. The simulated time resolution is $\rm (73\pm 1)~ps$ after considering the intrinsic leading contributions of the detector to time resolution.

Higher-order exceptional point and Landau-Zener Bloch oscillations in driven non-Hermitian photonic Lieb lattices

We propose a scheme to realize parity-time (PT) symmetric photonic Lieb lattices of ribbon shape and complex couplings, thereby demonstrating the higher-order exceptional point (EP) and Landau-Zener Bloch (LZB) oscillations in presence of a refractive index gradient. Quite different from non-Hermitian flatband lattices with on-site gain/loss, which undergo thresholdless PT symmetry breaking, the spectrum for such quasi-one-dimensional Lieb lattices has completely real values when the index gradient is applied perpendicular to the ribbon, and a triply degenerated (third-order) EP with coalesced eigenvalues and eigenvectors emerges only when the amplitude of gain/loss ratio reaches a certain threshold value. When the index gradient is applied parallel to the ribbon, the LZB oscillations exhibit intriguing characteristics including asymmetric energy transition and pseudo-Hermitian propagation as the flatband is excited. Meanwhile, a secondary emission occurs each time when the oscillatory motion passes through the EP, leading to distinct energy distribution in the flatband when a dispersive band is excited. Such novel phenomena may appear in other non-Hermitian flatband systems. Our work may also bring insight and suggest a photonic platform to study the symmetry and topological characterization of higher-order EPs that may find unique applications in for example enhancing sensitivity.

Observation of quincunx-shaped and dipole-like flatband states in photonic rhombic lattices without band-touching

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of compact localized states (CLSs) in a quasi-one-dimensional photonic rhombic lattice in presence of two distinct refractive-index gradients (i.e., a driven lattice ribbon) acting as external direct current (dc) electric fields. Such a lattice is composed of an array of periodically arranged evanescently coupled waveguides, which hosts a perfect flatband that touches both remaining dispersive bands when it is not driven. The external driving is realized by modulating the relative writing beam intensity of adjacent waveguides. We find that a y-gradient set perpendicularly to the ribbon preserves the flatband while removing the band-touching. The undriven CLS - which occupies two lattices sites over one unit cell - turns into a quincunx-shaped CLS spanned over two unit cells. Instead, an x-gradient acting parallel to the ribbon yields a Stark ladder of CLS whose spatial profile is unchanged with respect to the undriven case. We notably find that their superposition leads to Bloch-like oscillations in momentum space.

Latent Dirichlet Allocation with Residual Convolutional Neural Network Applied in Evaluating Credibility of Chinese Listed Companies

This project demonstrated a methodology to estimating cooperate credibility with a Natural Language Processing approach. As cooperate transparency impacts both the credibility and possible future earnings of the firm, it is an important factor to be considered by banks and investors on risk assessments of listed firms. This approach of estimating cooperate credibility can bypass human bias and inconsistency in the risk assessment, the use of large quantitative data and neural network models provides more accurate estimation in a more efficient manner compare to manual assessment. At the beginning, the model will employs Latent Dirichlet Allocation and THU Open Chinese Lexicon from Tsinghua University to classify topics in articles which are potentially related to corporate credibility. Then with the keywords related to each topics, we trained a residual convolutional neural network with data labeled according to surveys of fund manager and accountant's opinion on corporate credibility. After the training, we run the model with preprocessed news reports regarding to all of the 3065 listed companies, the model is supposed to give back companies ranking based on the level of their transparency.

Highly-efficient spintronic terahertz emitter enabled by metal-dielectric photonic crystal

Spintronic terahertz (THz) emitter provides the advantages such as apparently broader spectrum, significantly lower cost, and more flexibility in compared with the commercial THz emitters, and thus attracts great interests recently. In past few years, efforts have been made in optimizing the material composition and structure geometry, and the conversion efficiency has been improved close to that of ZnTe crystal. One of the drawbacks of the current designs is the rather limited laser absorption - more than 50% energy is wasted and the conversion efficiency is thus limited. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel device that fully utilizes the laser intensity and significantly improves the conversion efficiency. The device, which consists of a metal-dielectric photonic crystal structure, utilizes the interference between the multiple scattering waves to simultaneously suppress the reflection and transmission of the laser, and to reshape the laser field distributions. The experimentally detected laser absorption and THz generations show one-to-one correspondence with the theoretical calculations. We achieve the strongest THz pulse emission that presents a 1.7 times improvement compared to the currently designed spintronic emitter. This work opens a new pathway to improve the performance of spintronic THz emitter from the perspective of optics.

Effect of Native Defects on Optical Properties of InxGa1-xN Alloys

The energy position of the optical absorption edge and the free carrier populations in InxGa1-xN ternary alloys can be controlled using high energy 4He+ irradiation. The blue shift of the absorption edge after irradiation in In-rich material (x > 0.34) is attributed to the band-filling effect (Burstein-Moss shift) due to the native donors introduced by the irradiation. In Ga-rich material, optical absorption measurements show that the irradiation-introduced native defects are inside the bandgap, where they are incorporated as acceptors. The observed irradiation-produced changes in the optical absorption edge and the carrier populations in InxGa1-xN are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the amphoteric defect model.
