Establishing and storing of deterministic quantum entanglement among three distant atomic ensembles

It is crucial for physical realization of quantum information networks to first establish entanglement among multiple space-separated quantum memories and then at a user-controlled moment to transfer the stored entanglement to quantum channels for distribution and conveyance of information. Here we present an experimental demonstration on generation, storage and transfer of deterministic quantum entanglement among three spatially separated atomic ensembles. The off-line prepared multipartite entanglement of optical modes is mapped into three distant atomic ensembles to establish entanglement of atomic spin waves via electromagnetically-induced-transparency light-matter interaction. Then the stored atomic entanglement is transferred into a tripartite quadrature entangled state of light, which is space-separated and can be dynamically allocated to three quantum channels for conveying quantum information. The existence of entanglement among released three optical modes verifies that the system has capacity of preserving multipartite entanglement. The presented protocol can be directly extended to larger quantum networks with more nodes.

Energy-aware Web Browsing on Heterogeneous Mobile Platforms

Web browsing is an activity that billions of mobile users perform on a daily basis. Battery life is a primary concern to many mobile users who often find their phone has died at most inconvenient times. The heterogeneous multi-core architecture is a solution for energy-efficient processing. However, the current mobile web browsers rely on the operating system to exploit the underlying hardware, which has no knowledge of individual web contents and often leads to poor energy efficiency. This paper describes an automatic approach to render mobile web workloads for performance and energy efficiency. It achieves this by developing a machine learning based approach to predict which processor to use to run the web rendering engine and at what frequencies the processors should operate. Our predictor learns offline from a set of training web workloads. The built predictor is then integrated into the browser to predict the optimal processor configuration at runtime, taking into account the web workload characteristics and the optimisation goal: whether it is load time, energy consumption or a trade-off between them. We evaluate our approach on a representative ARM big.LITTLE mobile architecture using the hottest 500 webpages. Our approach achieves 80% of the performance delivered by an ideal predictor. We obtain, on average, 45%, 63.5% and 81% improvement respectively for load time, energy consumption and the energy delay product, when compared to the Linux heterogeneous multi-processing scheduler.

Spatial multiplexing of atom-photon entanglement sources using feed-forward controls and switching networks

The light-matter quantum interface that can create quantum-correlations or entanglement between a photon and one atomic collective excitation is a fundamental building block for a quantum repeater. The intrinsic limit is that the probability of preparing such non-classical atom-photon correlations has to be kept low in order to suppress multi-excitation. To enhance this probability without introducing multi-excitation errors, a promising scheme is to apply multimode memories into the interface. Significant progresses have been made in temporal, spectral, and spatial multiplexing memories, but the enhanced probability for generating the entangled atom-photon pair has not been experimentally realized. Here, by using 6 spin-wave-photon entanglement sources, a switching network and feed-forward control, we build a multiplexed light-matter interface and then demonstrate a ~6-fold (~4-fold) probability increase in generating entangled atom-photon (photon-photon) pairs. The measured compositive Bell parameter for the multiplexed interface is 2.49+-0.03 combined with a memory lifetime of up to ~60 microseconds.

Nonlocality as a consequence of complementarity

Complementarity and nonlocality are two characteristic traits of quantum physics that distinguishes it from classical physics. In this paper, we prove that the complementarity between global and local observables in Bell's experiment sets the decisive foundation for the nonlocality of composite systems.

Emergent Predication Structure in Hidden State Vectors of Neural Readers

A significant number of neural architectures for reading comprehension have recently been developed and evaluated on large cloze-style datasets. We present experiments supporting the emergence of "predication structure" in the hidden state vectors of these readers. More specifically, we provide evidence that the hidden state vectors represent atomic formulas $Φ[c]$ where $Φ$ is a semantic property (predicate) and $c$ is a constant symbol entity identifier.

Crack-tip stress evaluation of multi-scale Griffith crack subjected to tensile loading by using peridynamics

Crack-tip stress evaluation has always been a problem in the frame of classical elasticity theory. Peridynamics has been shown to have great advantages in dealing with crack problems. In the present study, we present a peridynamic crack-tip stress evaluation method for multi-scale Griffith crack subject to tensile loading. The bond-based peridynamics is used to calculate the displacement field. Non-local deformation gradient definition from non-ordinary state-based peridynamics is used for stress calculation. Besides, a scale factor is introduced for evaluating crack-tip stress of multi-scale Griffith crack. Numerical results compared with Eringen's results show that this peridynamic crack-tip stress evaluation method is valid for multi-scale cracks, and with the change of distance of material points, the evaluated crack-tip stress tends to be stable.

Broad Context Language Modeling as Reading Comprehension

Progress in text understanding has been driven by large datasets that test particular capabilities, like recent datasets for reading comprehension (Hermann et al., 2015). We focus here on the LAMBADA dataset (Paperno et al., 2016), a word prediction task requiring broader context than the immediate sentence. We view LAMBADA as a reading comprehension problem and apply comprehension models based on neural networks. Though these models are constrained to choose a word from the context, they improve the state of the art on LAMBADA from 7.3% to 49%. We analyze 100 instances, finding that neural network readers perform well in cases that involve selecting a name from the context based on dialogue or discourse cues but struggle when coreference resolution or external knowledge is needed.

Who did What: A Large-Scale Person-Centered Cloze Dataset

We have constructed a new "Who-did-What" dataset of over 200,000 fill-in-the-gap (cloze) multiple choice reading comprehension problems constructed from the LDC English Gigaword newswire corpus. The WDW dataset has a variety of novel features. First, in contrast with the CNN and Daily Mail datasets (Hermann et al., 2015) we avoid using article summaries for question formation. Instead, each problem is formed from two independent articles --- an article given as the passage to be read and a separate article on the same events used to form the question. Second, we avoid anonymization --- each choice is a person named entity. Third, the problems have been filtered to remove a fraction that are easily solved by simple baselines, while remaining 84% solvable by humans. We report performance benchmarks of standard systems and propose the WDW dataset as a challenge task for the community.

Generation of narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pairs at a rubidium D1 line

Using the process of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), we generate a narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pair resonant on the rubidium (Rb) D1 line (795 nm). The degenerate single-mode photon pair is selected by multiple temperature controlled etalons. The linewidth of generated polarization-entangled photon pairs is 15 MHz which matches the typical atomic memory bandwidth. The measured Bell parameter for the polarization-entangled photons S=2.73+-0.04 which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality by ~18 standard deviations. The presented entangled photon pair source could be utilized in quantum communication and quantum computing based on quantum memories in atomic ensemble.

Controllably releasing long-lived quantum memory for photonic polarization qubit into multiple separate photonic channels

We report an experiment in which long-lived quantum memories for photonic polarization qubits (PPQs) are controllably released into any one of multiple separate channels. The PPQs are implemented with an arbitrarily-polarized coherent signal light pulses at the single-photon level and are stored in cold atoms by means of electromagnetic-induced-transparency scheme. Reading laser pulses propagating along the direction at a small angle relative to quantum axis are applied to release the stored PPQs into an output channel. By changing the propagating directions of the read laser beam, we controllably release the retrieved PPQs into 7 different photonic output channels, respectively. At one of the output channels, the measured maximum quantum-process fidelity for the PPQs is 94.2% at storage time of t= 0.85ms. At storage time of 6 ms, the quantum-process fidelity is still beyond 78%, the threshold for the violation of the Bell inequality. The demonstrated controllable release of the stored PPQs may extend the capabilities of the quantum information storage technique.

Reducing Runtime by Recycling Samples

Contrary to the situation with stochastic gradient descent, we argue that when using stochastic methods with variance reduction, such as SDCA, SAG or SVRG, as well as their variants, it could be beneficial to reuse previously used samples instead of fresh samples, even when fresh samples are available. We demonstrate this empirically for SDCA, SAG and SVRG, studying the optimal sample size one should use, and also uncover be-havior that suggests running SDCA for an integer number of epochs could be wasteful.

Simultaneous generation of two spin-wave-photon entangled states in an atomic ensemble

The generation and storage of entangled photons play important roles in quantum information technique. Spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) in atomic ensembles provides a promising method to generate entangled photons capable of storage. In the past experiments, a spin-wave-photon entangled state is produced via SRS in an atomic ensemble, with which a pair of entangled photons is obtained. Here, we report a scheme of simultaneously generating two spin-wave-photon entangled states in an atomic ensemble by collecting Stokes photons at two different directions. Based on the obtained two atom-photon entangled sources, we generate a three-photon GHZ polarization-entangled state and conditionally prepare a polarization-entangled photon pair, respectively.

Prometheus: LT Codes Meet Cooperative Transmission in Cellular Networks

Following fast growth of cellular networks, more users have drawn attention to the contradiction between dynamic user data traffic and static data plans. To address this important but largely unexplored issue, in this paper, we design a new data plan sharing system named Prometheus, which is based on the scenario that some smartphone users have surplus data traffic and are willing to help others download data. To realize this system, we first propose a mechanism that incorporates LT codes into UDP. It is robust to transmission errors and encourages more concurrent transmissions and forwardings. It also can be implemented easily with low implementation complexity. Then we design an incentive mechanism using a Stackelberg game to choose assistant users ($AUs$), all participants will gain credits in return, which can be used to ask for future help when they need to download something. Finally real environment experiments are conducted and the results show that users in our Prometheus not only can manage their surplus data plan more efficiently, but also achieve a higher speed download rate.

Layered compounds AFBiS2: superior birefringent crystals

Stimulated by the discovery of the giant birefringence (GBF) in LaOBiS2 (H. Wang, arxiv: 1304.5032), we check SrFBiS2 and find a superior birefringence up to 1.28. Naturally, AF layer (i.e., SrF) is considered to be of important and is demonstrated by the further study on AFBiS2 (A=Mg, Ca, Ba). Interestingly, MgFBiS2 shows the largest birefringence of 1.65. Furthermore, the origin of GBF is discussed in detail.

Long lifetime and high-fidelity quantum memory of photonic polarization qubit by lifting Zeeman degeneracy

Long-lived and high-fidelity memory for photonic polarization qubit (PPQ) is crucial for constructing quantum networks. Here we present an EIT-based millisecond storage system in which a moderate magnetic field is applied on a cold-atom cloud to lift Zeeman degeneracy. PPQ states are stored as two magnetic-field-insensitive spin waves. Especially, the influence of magnetic-field-sensitive spin waves on the storage performances is almost totally avoided. The measured average fidelities of polarization states are 98.6% at 200 us and 78.4% at 4.5 ms, respectively.

Giant birefringence in layered compound LaOBiS2

Birefringent crystals (BFC) have been extensively used in imaging spectrometer, laser devices, and optical components. Seeking new BFC is of important for both fundamental research and industrial application. Employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT), we found that LaOBiS2 (space group P4/nmm), the parent phase of recently discovered BiS2-superconductor, exhibits superior birefringence with a maximum value of 2.94, which is 13.4 times larger than the extensively used YVO4 (0.22). Furthermore, LaOBiS2 is an indirect semiconductor with a band-gap of 0.9 eV, which is suitable for optical applications. The origin of giant inherent birefringence is discussed.

Experimental realization of three-color entanglement at optical fiber communication and atomic storage wavelengths

Multi-color entangled states of light including low-loss optical fiber transmission and atomic resonance frequencies are essential resources for future quantum information network. We present the experimental achievement on the three-color entanglement generation at 852 nm, 1550 nm and 1440 nm wavelengths for optical continuous variables. The entanglement generation system consists of two cascaded non-degenerated optical parametric oscillators (NOPOs). The flexible selectivity of nonlinear crystals in the two NOPOs and the tunable property of NOPO provide large freedom for the frequency selection of three entangled optical beams, so the present system is possible to be developed as practical devices used for quantum information networks with atomic storage units and long fiber transmission lines.

Striped-magnetic-order suppresses giant optical anisotropy and drives structural distortion in iron arsenide superconductors

To examine the role of magnetism in superconductivity of iron-based superconductors, we first present first-principles optical calculations on three representative parent compounds: LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2 and LiFeAs. Both nonmagnetic (NM) and spin-density wave (SDW) with striped antiferromagnetic order are considered. Due to their layer structure, these compounds in NM states show anomalously large optical anisotropy with a conductivity ratio $σ_{zz}/σ{xx}$ as large as 313% in LaFeAsO and 530% in LiFeAs. Interestingly the giant optical anisotropy is significantly suppressed by SDW. On the other hand, the variable-cell-shape optimizations confirm that SDW does drive an orthorhombic-distortion. The drive force is dependent on the local magnetic moment on Fe sublattice, which is tuned by its bonding environment. Based on these results, we discussed the delicate role of magnetism in superconductivity.
