One Way Light Transmission through metal membranes

We propose a new mechanism for irreversibility of light assisted by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). By achieving the different mutual conversion efficiency between the radiation field and the SPPs on the opposite surfaces of metal membrane, the unidirectional transmission is observed in a quite simple asymmetric metallic sub-wavelength structures Ag(15nm)/AAO, in which the difference of the two-way transmittance is large than 50%.

Zero-refraction in natural materials and the mechanism of metal superlens

We found that a single negative material has a character of zero-refraction in near field, and point out that the mechanism of a metal superlens to image with the resolution exceeding the diffraction limitation is different from that of a perfect lens made of a double negative material. The principle of metal superlens is disclosed. Our numerical results based on the zero-refraction character coincide with the experimental results well. This work brings new understanding about the single negative materials and will lead the applications of metal superlens in right way.

Coherent manipulation of spin wave vector for polarization of photons in an atomic ensemble

We experimentally demonstrate the manipulation of two-orthogonal components of a spin wave in an atomic ensemble. Based on Raman two-photon transition and Larmor spin precession induced by magnetic field pulses, the coherent rotations between the two components of the spin wave is controllably achieved. Successively, the two manipulated spin-wave components are mapped into two orthogonal polarized optical emissions, respectively. By measuring Ramsey fringes of the retrieved optical signals, the π/2-pulse fidelity of ~96% is obtained. The presented manipulation scheme can be used to build an arbitrary rotation for qubit operations in quantum information processing based on atomic ensembles.

The momentum-resolved and time-resolved two-color optical coherence absorption spectrum in the scattering process

The two-color optical coherence absorption spectrum (QUIC-AB) of GaAs quantum well in the presence of a charge current is investigated. We find that the QUIC-AB depends strongly not only on the amplitude of the electron current but also on the direction of the electron current. Thus, the amplitude and the angular distribution of scattering current in the scatter process can be detected directly in real time with the QUIC-AB. The phase shift of scattered waves and the details of the scattering potential can also be determined.

The influence of the optical Stark effect on chiral tunneling in graphene

The influences of intense coherent laser fields on the transport properties of a single layer graphene are investigated by using the finite-difference time-domain method. Under an intense laser field, the valence band and conduction band states mix via the optical Stark effect. The chiral symmetry of Dirac electrons is broken and the perfect chiral tunneling is strongly suppressed.

Ultralong Copper Phthalocyanine Nanowires with New Crystal Structure and Broad Optical Absorption

The development of molecular nanostructures plays a major role in emerging organic electronic applications, as it leads to improved performance and is compatible with our increasing need for miniaturisation. In particular, nanowires have been obtained from solution or vapour phase and have displayed high conductivity, or large interfacial areas in solar cells. In all cases however, the crystal structure remains as in films or bulk, and the exploitation of wires requires extensive post-growth manipulation as their orientations are random. Here we report copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanowires with diameters of 10-100 nm, high directionality and unprecedented aspect ratios. We demonstrate that they adopt a new crystal phase, designated eta-CuPc, where the molecules stack along the long axis. The resulting high electronic overlap along the centimetre length stacks achieved in our wires mediates antiferromagnetic couplings and broadens the optical absorption spectrum. The ability to fabricate ultralong, flexible metal phthalocyanine nanowires opens new possibilities for applications of these simple molecules.

Effects of optical fields on the tunneling time of chiral electrons in graphene

The influences of optical fields on the tunneling time in graphene are investigated in real time using the finite-difference time-domain method. The tunneling time of electrons irradiated by an optical field is significantly different from that observed in traditional quantum tunneling. We found that when the barrier width increases, the group delay becomes constant for the reflected wave packet, but increases linearly for the transmitted wave packet. This peculiar tunneling effect can be attributed to current leakage in a time-dependent barrier generated via the optical Stark effect.

Quantum Interference of Stored Coherent Spin-wave Excitations in a Two-channel Memory

Quantum memories are essential elements in long-distance quantum networks and quantum computation. Significant advances have been achieved in demonstrating relative long-lived single-channel memory at single-photon level in cold atomic media. However, the qubit memory corresponding to store two-channel spin-wave excitations (SWEs) still faces challenges, including the limitations resulting from Larmor procession, fluctuating ambient magnetic field, and manipulation/measurement of the relative phase between the two channels. Here, we demonstrate a two-channel memory scheme in an ideal tripod atomic system, in which the total readout signal exhibits either constructive or destructive interference when the two-channel SWEs are retrieved by two reading beams with a controllable relative phase. Experimental result indicates quantum coherence between the stored SWEs. Based on such phase-sensitive storage/retrieval scheme, measurements of the relative phase between the two SWEs and Rabi oscillation, as well as elimination of the collapse and revival of the readout signal, are experimentally demonstrated.

Eight new quasars discovered by LAMOST in one extragalactic field

We report the discovery of eight new quasars in one extragalactic field (five degree centered at RA=$08^h58^m08.2^s$, Dec=$01^o32'29.7''$) with the LAMOST commissioning observations on December 18, 2009. These quasars, with $i$ magnitudes from 16.44 to 19.34 and redshifts from 0.898 to 2.773, were not identified in the SDSS spectroscopic survey, though six of them with redshifts less than 2.5 were selected as quasar targets in SDSS. Except one source without near-IR $Y$-band data, seven of these eight new quasars meet a newly proposed quasar selection criterion involving both near-IR and optical colors. Two of them were found in the 'redshift desert' for quasars ($z$ from 2.2 to 3), indicating that the new criterion is efficient for recovering the missing quasars with similar optical colors as stars. Although LAMOST met some problems during the commissioning observations, we were still able to identify other 38 known SDSS quasars in this field, with $i$ magnitudes from 16.24 to 19.10 and redshifts from 0.297 to 4.512. Our identifications imply that a substantial fraction of quasars may be missing in the previous quasar surveys. The implication of our results to the future LAMOST quasar survey is discussed.

A very bright i=16.44 quasar in the `redshift desert' discovered by LAMOST

The redshift range from 2.2 to 3, is known as the 'redshift desert' of quasars because quasars with redshift in this range have similar optical colors as normal stars and are thus difficult to be found in optical sky surveys. A quasar candidate, SDSS J085543.40-001517.7, which was selected by a recently proposed criterion involving near-IR $Y-K$ and optical $g-z$ colors, was identified spectroscopically as a new quasar with redshift of 2.427 by the LAMOST commissioning observation in December 2009 and confirmed by the observation made with the NAOC/Xinglong 2.16m telescope in March 2010. This quasar was not targeted in the SDSS spectroscopic survey because it locates in the stellar locus of the optical color-color diagrams, while it is clearly separated from stars in the $Y-K$ vs. $g-z$ diagram. Comparing with other SDSS quasars we found this new quasar with $i$ magnitude of 16.44 is apparently the brightest one in the redshift range from 2.3 to 2.7. From the spectral properties we derived its central black hole mass as $(1.4\sim3.9) \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ and the bolometric luminosity as $3.7\times 10^{48}$ \ergs, which indicates that this new quasar is intrinsically very bright and belongs to the most luminous quasars in the universe. Our identification supports that quasars in the redshift desert can be found by the quasar selection criterion involving the near-IR colors. More missing quasars are expected to be recovered by the future LAMOST spectroscopic surveys, which is important to the study of the cosmological evolution of quasars at redshift higher than 2.2.

Interatomic exchange coupling of BCC iron

We performed first-principle calculations on the exchange interaction (EI) between atoms in BCC-Fe strained volumetrically. Our results show that the volume-dependence of the EI deviates considerably from the Bethe-Slater curve. This behavior is discussed in terms of the on-site and/or inter-site direct exchange interactions between electrons.

Large Cross-phase Modulation Based on Double EIT in a Four-level Tripod Atomic System

We report the experimental observations on the simultaneous EIT effects for probe and trigger fields (double EIT) as well as the large cross-phase modulation (XPM) between the two fields in a four-level tripod EIT system of the D1 line of 87Rb atoms. The XPM coefficients (larger than 2*10-5cm2/W) and the accompanying transmissions (higher than 60%) are measured at slightly detuning of the probe field from the exact EIT resonance condition. The presented system can be applied in the recently proposed quantum information processing with weak cross-Kerr nonlinearities.

Preparation and Determination of Spin-Polarized States in Multi-Zeeman-sublevel Atoms

We demonstrate a simple technique to prepare and determine the desired internal quantum states in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms. By choosing appropriate coupling and pumping laser beams, atoms can be easily prepared in a desired Zeeman sublevel with high purity or in any chosen ground-state population distributions. The population distributions or state purities of such prepared atomic states can be determined by using a weak, circularly-polarized probe beam due to differences in transition strengths among different Zeeman sublevels. Preparing well-defined internal quantum states in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms (or spin-polarized quantum-state engineering) will be very important in demonstrating many interesting effects in quantum information processing with multi-level atomic systems.

Controlled polarization rotation of an optical field in multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms

We investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, the phenomenon of polarization rotation of a weak, linearly-polarized optical (probe) field in an atomic system with multiple three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) sub-systems. The polarization rotation angle can be controlled by a circularly-polarized coupling beam, which breaks the symmetry in number of EIT subsystems seen by the left- and right-circularly-polarized components of the weak probe beam. A large polarization rotation angle (up to 45 degrees) has been achieved with a coupling beam power of only 15 mW. Detailed theoretical analyses including different transition probabilities in different transitions and Doppler-broadening are presented and the results are in good agreements with the experimentally measured results.

Multi-dark-state resonances in cold multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms

We present our experimental and theoretical studies of multi-dark-state resonances (MDSRs) generated in a unique cold rubidium atomic system with only one coupling laser beam. Such MDSRs are caused by different transition strengths of the strong coupling beam connecting different Zeeman sublevels. Controlling the transparency windows in such electromagnetically induced transparency system can have potential applications in multi-wavelength optical communication and quantum information processing.

Ballistic Magnetoresitance over 4000% at Room Temperature in Ni-Ni Electrodeposited Nanocontacts

This paper reports ballistic magnetoresistance values over 4000% measured in electrodeposited Ni-Ni nanocontacts with T geometry previously developed . Over the time, after several magnetic field cycles, the ballistic magnetoresistance relaxed to a 400%. While that the magnetoreistance of a contact could rise indefinitely; relaxtion and reproducibility are, however, the main issue. We find that the tip ending radius conforming the contacts appears not to play the main role.
