Scalarization of Charged Black Hole in Gauss-Bonnet Extended Starobinsky-Maxwell Gravity

We re-examine spontaneous scalarization of black holes within Starobinsky gravity supplemented by the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. A novel feature is uncovered: scalarized solutions split into two smooth branches that connect at a common minimal horizon radius, a multi-branch structure previously unreported for static, spherically symmetric scalarization. Extending the theory with a Maxwell field, we find that this multi-branch structure persists, while a new additional disconnected branch emerges within certain parameter ranges. We thoroughly analyse the transition from a single smooth branch to two disconnected branches. Lastly, we verify, employing the standard Maxwell thermodynamic relations, that all charged hairy solutions obey the first law exactly.

Rotating Black Holes and the Kerr/CFT Correspondence in Einstein-Bumblebee Gravity

We constructed rotating black holes with equal angular momentum in five dimensional Einstein-Bumblebee gravity with and without cosmological constant. Their thermodynamic properties are examined via two distinct methods: the Wald formalism and the Komar integral. Notably, the conserved charges, including mass, angular momentum, and entropy, computed from these two approaches differ by a constant prefactor that is solely determined by the Bumblebee coupling. Subsequently, we apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence to derive the microscopic entropy of these black holes and find that it precisely reproduces the entropy in Komar-integral version, rather than the Wald entropy.

Quantization-scheme-Independent Energy and Its Implications for Holographic Bounds

In holographic duality, the total energy of the dual field theory is obtained from the holographic renormalization, which depends not only on the bulk geometry but also on the choice of quantization schemes. We point out that the validity of several widely studied holographic inequalities -- including the AdS Penrose inequality, the late-time bound on entanglement entropy growth, and the growth-rate limits of CV and CA complexities -- depends on the choice of quantization schemes. Motivated by this issue, we introduce a modified total energy, which is still computed via holographic renormalization but the final value is independent of the choice of quantization schemes. We verify that this modified energy removes the apparent violations of these bounds that arise from quantization-scheme dependence in the model of massive scalar field. Our results suggest that our modified total energy provides a more robust notion of energy when we talk about above inequalities in holographic settings.

Scalarization of charged Taub-NUT black hole and the entropy bound

We investigate the spontaneous scalarization of charged Taub-NUT black holes within the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. By selecting a suitable coupling function, the theory admits the analytic charged Taub-NUT geometry as a solution. We demonstrate that this scalar-free background becomes unstable within specific parameter regimes, leading to the bifurcation of a new branch of hairy charged Taub-NUT black holes. These solutions are characterized by a two-dimensional parameter space spanned by the electric charge and the NUT parameter. We conduct a systematic study of their properties, specifically the scalar charge, temperature, and entropy. Our analysis reveals that the entropy of the scalarized solutions exhibits particularly compelling features. Two universal characteristics emerge: first, the entropy of the hairy black hole is strictly greater than that of its scalar-free counterpart; second, the entropy reaches a local maximum precisely at the bifurcation point. Notably, when the electric charge is fixed, this maximum entropy value remains universal across a specific range of the mass parameter.

Desclarizing the Wormhole to Black Hole with Negative Mass

We construct new black holes using the curvature-induced scalarization mechanism in Einstein gravity coupled to a massless phantom scalar. We find that the general wormhole solutions with independent scalar charge become descalarized so that the resulting black hole scalar hair becomes secondary and a function of the mass only. The long-range force between the two identical black holes can be attractive, zero or repulsive, depending on the mass/scalar charge relation. Furthermore, the black hole mass can be negative. Our finding suggests that exotic matter responsible for wormholes can also lead to exotic black holes.

Charged Taub-NUT type Black Holes in Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell Theory

We numerically construct new charged Taub-NUT-type black hole solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell theory. We explore the effects of the NUT parameter and the electric charge parameter on the black hole solutions in great detail. Compared with static spherical black holes in the same theory, there is one major difference: there are three branches of NUT solutions, whereas there are only two branches of static spherical black hole solutions. Compared with neutral NUT solutions in Weyl gravity, where the solutions intersect with each other, the charged NUT solutions we find are disconnected.

Taub-NUT-like Black Holes in Einstein-Bumblebee Gravity

We consider Einstein-Bumblebee gravity and construct a novel Taub-NUT-like black hole solution within this theory. Different from the Taub-NUT black hole in Einstein gravity (which is Ricci-flat), our newly constructed Taub-NUT-like black hole is not Ricci-flat. Armed with the Wald formalism, we extensively study the thermodynamics of this black hole solution and confirm that both the first law of thermodynamics and the Smarr relation hold. We then take a further step by adding a cosmological constant to the Einstein-Bumblebee theory, and successfully construct a Taub-NUT-AdS-like black hole. We derive all the thermodynamic quantities, including treating the cosmological constant as a pressure, and confirm that the first law and Smarr relation hold as well.

On Charged Black Holes in Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell Theory

There exist two branches of static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions in Einstein-Weyl theory: one is the Schwarzschild black hole, and the other is a numerically constructed black hole that bifurcates from the Schwarzschild solution. Similarly, there are two branches of charged black holes in Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell theory. We have uncovered the relationships between the charged black holes and the neutral ones. The two charged black holes branch out from the bifurcation point of the neutral ones once charge is added. We found that one of the charged black holes is entirely different from the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole, while the other is similar to the RN black hole. In particular, the RN-like black hole approaches the RN black hole as the charge increases. We calculated the charge-to-mass ratio of the RN-like charged black hole in the near-extremal limit, and the value is less than that of the extremal RN black hole. Since we consider the higher-derivative Weyl square term as part of the classical gravity theory, rather than as a quantum effect, our result sets a lower bound on the charge-to-mass ratio in the context of the Weak Gravity Conjecture.

Taub-NUT Black Hole in Higher Derivative Gravity and Its Thermodynamics

We construct the first-order perturbative Taub-NUT black hole solutions in Einstein gravity extended with a cubic curvature invariant. The corrected thermodynamic quantities are then obtained by the standard method and the first law and Smarr relation are satisfied. We also study the perturbative correction to thermodynamics using the Reall-Santos (RS) method and verify that the method is still applicable even though the metrics are no longer asymptotic to Minkowski spacetime. We then apply the RS method to obtain the leading correction to the thermodynamics of the complicated Kerr-Taub-NUT black holes.

Scalarization of Taub-NUT Black Holes in Extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

Recently, scalarization of Schwarzschild black hole are extensively studied. In this work, we explore the scalarization of Taub-NUT black hole. The theory we consider is the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet theory, which admits Ricci-flat Taub-NUT black hole as a solution. An analysis of probe scalar field is carried out to identify the mass parameter and NUT parameter (m,n) where the hairy black holes start to emerge. Then, we use shooting method to construct the scalarized Taub-NUT black hole numerically. Being different from the Schwarzschild case, there exists two branches of new hairy black holes which are smoothly connected to each other. We calculate the entropy of scalarized black holes and compare it with the entropy of scalar-free Taub-NUT black holes, it turns out that the entropy of the new hairy black holes are larger than that of scalar-free black holes. A novel phenomena emerges in this system that the entropy of the black holes at the bifurcation point is constant for positive mass parameter. We then conjecture a maximal entropy bound for all the scalarized black hole whose mass parameter at the bifurcation point is greater than zero.

New Taub-NUT Black Holes with Massive Spin-2 Hair

We consider Einstein gravity extended with quadratic curvature invariants, where the well-known Ricci-flat Taub-NUT black hole remains a solution. An analysis of the unstable Lichnerowicz modes in the Taub-NUT background enables us to identify the mass and NUT parameters (m,n) where new Taub-NUT black holes can emerge. We then adopt numerical technique to construct these new Taub-NUT black holes that bifurcate away from the Ricci-flat ones. Unlike the Ricci-flat Taub-NUT, there can exist two new black holes for an appropriate given temperature, making it a total of three if we include the Ricci-flat one.

Thermodynamics of Taub-NUT and Plebanski Solutions

We observe the parallel between the null Killing vector on the horizon and degenerate Killing vectors at both north and south poles in Kerr-Taub-NUT and general Plebanski solutions. This suggests a correspondence between the pairs of the angular momentum/velocity and the NUT charge/potential. We treat the time as a real line such that the Misner strings are physical. We find that the NUT charge spreads along the Misner strings, analogous to that the mass in the Schwarzschild black hole sits at its spacetime singularity. We develop procedures to calculate all the thermodynamic quantities and we find that the results are consistent with the first law (Wald formalism), the Euclidean action and the Smarr relation. We also apply the Wald formalism, the Euclidean action approach, and the (generalized) Komar integration to the electric and magnetic black holes in a class of EMD theories, and also to boosted black strings and Kaluza-Klein monopoles in five dimensions, to gain better understandings of how to deal with the subtleties associated with Dirac and Misner strings.

Thermodynamics of Taub-NUT-AdS Spactimes

We apply the generalised Komar method proposed in [arxiv:2208.05494] to Taub-NUT-AdS spacetime in the theory of Einstein gravity plus a cosmological constant. Based on a generalised closed 2-form, we derive the total mass and NUT charge of the Taub-NUT-AdS spacetime. Together with other thermodynamic quantities calculated through standard method, we conform the first law and Smarr relation. Then, we consider charged AdS NUTy spacetimes in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a cosmological constant, and show that the generalised Komar method works, too. We obtain all the thermodynamic quantities, and the first law and Smarr relation are checked to be satisfied automatically.

Near horizon gravitational charges

In this paper, we study the near horizon symmetry and gravitational charges in the Newman-Penrose formalism. In particular we investigate the effect from topological terms. We find that the Pontryagin term and Gauss-Bonnet term have significant influence on the near horizon charges and bring interesting novel features. We show that the gravitational charge derived from a general class of topological terms including the Pontryagin term and Gauss-Bonnet term can be obtained from the ambiguities of the symplectic potential.

A Note on Kerr/CFT and Wald Entropy Discrepancy in High Derivative Gravities

We examine the Kerr/CFT correspondence in Einstein gravity extended with quadratic curvature invariants. We consider two explicit examples in four and five dimensions and compute the central charges of the asymptotic symmetry algebras of the near horizon geometries, using the improved version of the BBC formalism that encompasses the information of the Lagrangian. We find that the resulting Cardy entropy differs from the Wald entropy, caused by the Riemann-squared $R^{μνρσ}R_{μνρσ}$ term.

Large-Charge Limit of AdS Boson Stars with Mixed Boundary Conditions

It was recently shown that charged AdS boson stars can reproduce the universal structure of the lowest scaling dimension in the subsector of a CFT with fixed large global $U(1)$ charge $Q$. Using the model consisting of Einstein-Maxwell gravity with a negative cosmological constant, coupled to a $U(1)$-charged conformally massless scalar with the fourth-order self interaction, we construct a class of charged AdS boson star solutions in the large $Q$ limit, where the scalar field obeys a mixed boundary condition, parameterized by $k$ that interpolates between the Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions corresponding to $k=0$ and $\infty$ respectively. By varying $k$, we numerically read off the $k$ dependence of the leading coefficient $c_{3/2}(k) \equiv \lim_{Q\rightarrow \infty} M/Q^{3/2}$. We find that $c_{3/2}(k)$ is a monotonously increasing function which grows linearly when $k$ is sufficiently small. When $k\rightarrow \infty$, $c_{3/2}(k)$ approaches the maximal value at a decreasing rate given by $k^{-3/2}$ . We also obtain a close form expression that fits the numerical data for the entire range of $k$ within $10^{-4}$ accuracy.

Revisiting the AdS Boson Stars: the Mass-Charge Relations

Motivated by the recent progress in solving the large charge sector of conformal field theories, we revisit the mass-charge relation of boson stars asymptotic to global AdS. We construct and classify a large number of electrically charged boson star solutions in a toy model and two supergravity models arising from the $SU(3)$ and $U(1)^4$ truncation of $D=4$ $SO(8)$ gauged maximal supergravity. We find a simple ansatz for the chemical potential that can fit the numerical data in striking accuracy for the full range of charge. Combining with the first law of thermodynamics, we can then evaluate the mass as a function of the charge and obtain the free energy in the fixed charge ensemble. We show that in the toy model, the ground state can be either the extremal RN black hole or the boson stars depending on the parameter region. For the $SU(3)$ truncation, there always exists a boson star that has smaller free energy than the extremal RN black hole, in contrast to the $U(1)^4$ model where the extremal RN black hole is always the ground state. In all models, for boson star solutions with arbitrarily large charge, we show that the large charge expansion of the mass reproduces the same structure exhibited in the CFT side.

Black Hole Scalarization in Gauss-Bonnet Extended Starobinsky Gravity

We propose a class of higher-derivative gravities that can be viewed as the Gauss-Bonnet extension of the Starobinsky model. The theory admits the Minkowski spacetime vacuum whose linear spectrum consists of the graviton and a massive scalar mode. In addition to the usual Schwarzschild black hole, we use numerical analysis to establish that in some suitable mass range, new black holes carrying the massive scalar hair can emerge. The new black hole serves as a "wall" separating the naked spacetime singularity and wormholes in the parameter space of the scalar hair. Our numerical results also indicate that although the new hairy black hole and the Schwarzschild have different spacetime geometry, their entropy and temperature are same for the same mass.
