Holographic Complexity Bounds

We study the action growth rate in the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) patch for a variety of $D\ge 4$ black holes in Einstein gravity that are asymptotic to the anti-de Sitter spacetime, with spherical, toric and hyperbolic horizons, corresponding to the topological parameter $k=1,0,-1$ respectively. We find a lower bound inequality $\frac{1}{T} \frac{\partial \dot I_{\rm WDW}}{\partial S}|_{Q,P_{\rm th}}> C$ for $k=0,1$, where $C$ is some order-one numerical constant. The lowest number in our examples is $C=(D-3)/(D-2)$. We also find that the quantity $(\dot I_{\rm WDW}-2P_{\rm th}\, ΔV_{\rm th})$ is greater than, equal to, or less than zero, for $k=1,0,-1$ respectively. For black holes with two horizons, $ΔV_{\rm th}=V_{\rm th}^+-V_{\rm th}^-$, i.e. the difference between the thermodynamical volumes of the outer and inner horizons. For black holes with only one horizon, we introduce a new concept of the volume $V_{\rm th}^0$ of the black hole singularity, and define $ΔV_{\rm th}=V_{\rm th}^+-V_{\rm th}^0$. The volume $V_{\rm th}^0$ vanishes for the Schwarzschild black hole, but in general it can be positive, negative or even divergent. For black holes with single horizon, we find a relation between $\dot I_{\rm WDW}$ and $V_{\rm th}^0$, which implies that the holographic complexity preserves the Lloyd's bound for positive or vanishing $V_{\rm th}^0$, but the bound is violated when $V_{\rm th}^0$ becomes negative. We also find explicit black hole examples where $V_{\rm th}^0$ and hence $\dot I_{\rm WDW}$ are divergent.

AC charge transport in holographic Horndeski gravity

In this paper, we investigate the AC charge transport in the holographic Horndeski gravity and identify a metal-semiconductor like transition that is driven by the Horndeski coupling. Moreover, we fit our numeric data by the Drude formula in slow relaxation cases.

Quasi-topological Electromagnetism: Dark Energy, Dyonic Black Holes, Stable Photon Spheres and Hidden Electromagnetic Duality

We introduce the quasi-topological electromagnetism which is defined to be the squared norm of the topological 4-form $F\wedge F$. A salient property is that its energy-momentum tensor is of the isotropic perfect fluid with the pressure being precisely the opposite to its energy density. It can thus provide a model for dark energy. We study its application in both black hole physics and cosmology. The quasi-topological term has no effect on the purely electric or magnetic Reissner-Nordström black holes, the dyonic solution is however completely modified. We find that the dyonic black holes can have four real horizons. For suitable parameters, the black hole can admit as many as three photon spheres, with one being stable. Another intriguing property is that although the quasi-topological term breaks the electromagnetic duality, the symmetry emerges in the on-shell action in the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. In cosmology, we demonstrate that the quasi-topological term alone is equivalent to a cosmological constant, but the model provides a mechanism for the dark energy to couple with other types of matter. We present a concrete example of the quasi-topological electromagnetism coupled to a scalar field that admits the standard FLRW cosmological solutions.

Action Growth of Dyonic Black Holes and Electromagnetic Duality

Electromagnetic duality of Maxwell theory is a symmetry of equations but not of the action. The usual application of the `complexity=action' conjecture would thus loose this duality. It was recently proposed in arxiv:1901.00014 that the duality can be restored by adding some appropriate boundary term, at the price of introducing the mixed boundary condition in the variation principle. We present universal such a term in both first-order and second-order formalism for a general theory of a minimally-coupled Maxwell field. The first-order formalism has the advantage that the variation principle involves only the Dirichlet boundary condition. Including this term, we compute the on-shell actions in the Wheeler-De Witt patch and find that the duality persists in these actions for a variety of theories, including Einstein-Maxwell, Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton, Einstein-Born-Infeld and Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell theories.

Holographic Complexity Growth Rate in Horndeski Theory

Based on the context of complexity = action (CA) conjecture, we calculate the holographic complexity of AdS black holes with planar and spherical topologies in Horndeski theory. We find that the rate of change of holographic complexity for neutral AdS black holes saturates the Lloyd's bound. For charged black holes, we find that there exists only one horizon and thus the corresponding holographic complexity can't be expressed as the difference of some thermodynamical potential between two horizons as that of Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole in Einstein-Maxwell theory. However, the Lloyd's bound is not violated for charged AdS black hole in Horndeski theory.

Violation of Thermal Conductivity Bound in Horndeski Theory

We consider AdS black planar black hole in the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Horndeski theory with two free axions and analyse the thermodynamics of the black hole. We calculate the holographic thermoelectric conductivities of the dual field theory and determine the ratio of thermal conductivity over the temperature. At low temperature with zero electric current, we find that the ratio is proportional to temperature squared and hence can arbitrarily approach zero, providing an example that violates the thermal conductivity bound proposed in [arXiv:1511.05970].

Smarr Integral Formula of D-dimensional Stationary Spacetimes in Einstein-Æther-Maxwell Theroy

Using the Wald formalism, we investigate the thermodynamics of charged black holes in D-dimensional stationary spacetimes with or without rotations in Einstein-æther-Maxwell theory. In particular, assuming the existence of a scaling symmetry of the action, we obtain the Smarr integral formula, which can be applied to both Killing and universal horizons. When restricted to 4-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes, previous results obtained by a different method are re-derived.

An Alternative Channel For High-Mass Binary Black Holes-----Dark Matter Accretion Onto Black Hole

By a method of population synthesis we construct a model of dark matter (DM) accretion onto binary black holes (BHs), and investigate the merger rate of the binary BHs. We find that the merger rate can weakly increase (less than 10\%). However, the DM accretion can efficiently enhance the masses of binary BHs. In our model, the result for $Z = 0.01$ without the DM accretion can not explain the GW170104, GW170814, and GW150914, while with the DM accretion, it can cover all observations well. For the higher metallicity ($Z = 0.02$), our model can not explain the mergers of high-mass binary BHs like GW170104, GW170814, and GW150914. We estimate that the merger rate of binary BHs lies between $\rm55Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$ to $\rm197Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$.

Quasi-Topological Ricci Polynomial Gravities

Quasi-topological terms in gravity can be viewed as those that give no contribution to the equations of motion for a special subclass of metric ansätze. They therefore play no rôle in constructing these solutions, but can affect the general perturbations. We consider Einstein gravity extended with Ricci tensor polynomial invariants, which admits Einstein metrics with appropriate effective cosmological constants as its vacuum solutions. We construct three types of quasi-topological gravities. The first type is for the most general static metrics with spherical, toroidal or hyperbolic isometries. The second type is for the special static metrics where $g_{tt} g_{rr}$ is constant. The third type is the linearized quasi-topological gravities on the Einstein metrics. We construct and classify results that are either dependent on or independent of dimensions, up to the tenth order. We then consider a subset of these three types and obtain Lovelock-like quasi-topological gravities, that are independent of the dimensions. The linearized gravities on Einstein metrics on all dimensions are simply Einstein and hence ghost free. The theories become quasi-topological on static metrics in one specific dimension, but non-trivial in others. We also focus on the quasi-topological Ricci cubic invariant in four dimensions as a specific example to study its effect on holography, including shear viscosity, thermoelectric DC conductivities and butterfly velocity. In particular, we find that the holographic diffusivity bounds can be violated by the quasi-topological terms, which can induce an extra massive mode that yields a butterfly velocity unbound above.

Holographic Heat Current as Noether Current

We employ the Noether procedure to derive a general formula for the radially conserved heat current in AdS planar black holes with certain transverse and traceless perturbations, for a general class of gravity theories. For Einstein gravity, the general higher-order Lovelock gravities and also a class of Horndeski gravities, we derive the boundary stress tensor and show that the resulting boundary heat current matches precisely the bulk Noether current.

Horndeski Gravity and the Violation of Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality

We consider Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell gravity, together with a cosmological constant and multiple Horndeski axions. We construct charged AdS planar black holes in general dimensions where the Horndeski anxions span over the planar directions. We analyse the thermodynamics and obtain the black hole volumes. We show that the reverse isoperimetric inequality can be violated, implying that these black holes can store information more efficiently than the Schwarzschild black hole.

DC Conductivities with Momentum Dissipation in Horndeski Theories

In this paper, we consider two four-dimensional Horndeski-type gravity theories with scalar fields that give rise to solutions with momentum dissipation in the dual boundary theories. Firstly, we study Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Horndeski axion term and two additional free axions which are responsible for momentum dissipation. We construct static electrically charged AdS planar black hole solutions in this theory and calculate analytically the holographic DC conductivity of the dual field theory. We then generalize the results to include magnetic charge in the black hole solution. Secondly, we analyze Einstein-Maxwell theory with two Horndeski axions which are used for momentum dissipation. We obtain AdS planar black hole solutions in the theory and we calculate the holographic DC conductivity of the dual field theory. The theory has a critical point $α+ γΛ= 0$, beyond which the kinetic terms of the Horndeski axions become ghost-like. The conductivity as a function of temperature behaves qualitatively like that of a conductor below the critical point, becoming semiconductor-like at the critical point. Beyond the critical point, the ghost-like nature of the Horndeski fields is associated with the onset of unphysical singular or negative conductivities. Some further generalisations of the above theories are considered also.

DC Conductivities from Non-Relativistic Scaling Geometries with Momentum Dissipation

We consider a gravitational theory with two Maxwell fields, a dilatonic scalar and spatially dependent axions. Black brane solutions to this theory are Lifshitz-like and violate hyperscaling. Working with electrically charged solutions, we calculate analytically the holographic DC conductivities when both gauge fields are allowed to fluctuate. We discuss some of the subtleties associated with relating the horizon to the boundary data, focusing on the role of Lifshitz asymptotics and the presence of multiple gauge fields. The axionic scalars lead to momentum dissipation in the dual holographic theory. Finally, we examine the behavior of the DC conductivities as a function of temperature, and comment on the cases in which one can obtain a linear resistivity.

Magnetically-Charged Black Branes and Viscosity/Entropy Ratios

We consider asymptotically-AdS $n$-dimensional black brane solutions in a theory of gravity coupled to a set of $N$ $p$-form field strengths, in which the field strengths carry magnetic charges. For appropriately chosen charges, the metrics are isotropic in the $(n-2)$ transverse directions. However, in general the field strength configurations break the full Euclidean symmetry of the $(n-2)$-dimensional transverse space. We then study the linearised equation for transverse traceless metric perturbations in these backgrounds, and by employing the Kubo formula we obtain expressions for $η/S$, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density. We find that the KSS bound on the ratio $η/S$ is generally violated in these solutions. We also extend the discussion by including also a dilatonic scalar field in the theory, leading to solutions that are asymptotically Lifshitz with hyperscaling violation.

Global Scaling Symmetry, Noether Charge and Universality of Shear Viscosity

Recently it was established in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity that the KSS viscosity/entropy ratio associated with AdS planar black holes can be viewed as the boundary dual to the generalized Smarr relation of the black holes in the bulk. In this paper we establish this relation in Einstein gravity with general minimally-coupled matter, and also in theories with an additional non-minimally coupled scalar field. We consider two examples for explicit demonstrations.

Thermodynamics of Charged Black Holes in Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell Theory

We extend an earlier investigation of the thermodynamics of static black holes in an Einstein-Horndeski theory of gravity coupled to a scalar field, by including now an elec- tromagnetic field as well. By studying the two-parameter families of charged static black holes, we obtain much more powerful constraints on the thermodynamics since, unlike in the uncharged one-parameter case, now the right-hand side of the first law is not automatically integrable. In fact, this allows us to demonstrate that there must be an additional contribution in the first law, over and above the usual terms expected for charged black holes. The origin of the extra contribution can be attributed to the behaviour of the scalar field on the horizon of the black hole. We carry out the calculations in four dimensions and also in general dimensions. We also derive the ratio of viscosity to entropy for the dual boundary field theory, showing that the usual viscosity bound for isotropic solutions can be violated, with the ratio depending on the mass and charge.

Black Hole Entropy and Viscosity Bound in Horndeski Gravity

Horndeski gravities are theories of gravity coupled to a scalar field, in which the action contains an additional non-minimal quadratic coupling of the scalar, through its first derivative, to the Einstein tensor or the analogous higher-derivative tensors coming from the variation of Gauss-Bonnet or Lovelock terms. In this paper we study the thermodynamics of the static black hole solutions in $n$ dimensions, in the simplest case of a Horndeski coupling to the Einstein tensor. We apply the Wald formalism to calculate the entropy of the black holes, and show that there is an additional contribution over and above those that come from the standard Wald entropy formula. The extra contribution can be attributed to unusual features in the behaviour of the scalar field. We also show that a conventional regularisation to calculate the Euclidean action leads to an expression for the entropy that disagrees with the Wald results. This seems likely to be due to ambiguities in the subtraction procedure. We also calculate the viscosity in the dual CFT, and show that the viscosity/entropy ratio can violate the $η/S\ge 1/(4π)$ bound for appropriate choices of the parameters.

Generalised Smarr Formula and the Viscosity Bound for Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton Black Holes

We study the shear viscosity to entropy ratio $η/S$ in the boundary field theories dual to black hole backgrounds in theories of gravity coupled to a scalar field, and generalisations including a Maxwell field and non-minimal scalar couplings. Motivated by the observation in simple examples that the saturation of the $η/S\ge 1/(4π)$ bound is correlated with the existence of a generalised Smarr relation for the planar black-hole solutions, we investigate this in detail for the general black-hole solutions in these theories, focusing especially on the cases where the scalar field plays a non-trivial role and gives rise to an additional parameter in the space of solutions. We find that a generalised Smarr relation holds in all cases, and in fact it can be viewed as the bulk gravity dual of the statement of the saturation of the viscosity to entropy bound. We obtain the generalised Smarr relation, whose existence depends upon a scaling symmetry of the planar black-hole solutions, by two different but related methods, one based on integrating the first law of thermodynamics, and the other based on the construction of a conserved Noether charge.
