Revisit of Correlation Analysis between Active Galactic Nuclei and Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

We update the previous analysis of correlation between ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and active galactic nuclei (AGN), using 69 UHECR events with energy $E\ge55\,{\rm EeV}$ released in 2010 by Pierre Auger observatory and 862 AGN within the distance $d\le100\,{\rm Mpc}$ listed in the 13th edition of Véron-Cetty and Véron AGN catalog. To make the test hypothesis definite, we use the simple AGN source model in which UHECR are originated both from AGN, with the fraction $f_A$, and from the isotropic background. We treat all AGN as equal sources of UHECR, and introduce the smearing angle $θ_s$ to incorporate the effects of intervening magnetic fields. We compare the arrival direction distributions observed by PAO and expected from the model by the correlational angular distance distribution (CADD) method. CADD method rules out the AGN dominance model with a small smearing angle ($f_A\gtrsim0.7$ and $θ_s\lesssim6^\circ$). Concerning the isotropy, CADD shows that the distribution of PAO data is marginally consistent with isotropy. The best fit model lies around the AGN fraction $f_A=0.4$ and the moderate smearing angle $θ_s=10^\circ$. For the fiducial value $f_A=0.7$, the best probability of CADD was obtained at a rather large smearing angle $θ_{\rm s}=46^\circ$. Our results imply that for the whole AGN to be viable sources of UHECR, either an appreciable amount of additional isotropic background or the large smearing effect is required. Thus, we try to bin the distance range of AGN to narrow down the UHECR sources and found that the AGN residing in the distance range $60-80\,{\rm Mpc}$ have good correlation with the updated PAO data. It is an indication that further study on the subclass of AGN as the UHECR source may be quite interesting.

A Study on Anisotropy in the Arrival Directions of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays Observed by Pierre Auger Observatory

We study the anisotropy in the arrival directions of PAO UHECRs, using the point source correlational angular distance distribution. The result shows that the anisotropy is characterized by one prominent excess region and one void region. The excess region is located near the Centaurus A direction, supporting that the Centaurus A is a promising UHECR source. The void region near the south pole direction may be used to limit the diffuse isotropic background contribution.

Correlation between Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays and Active Galactic Nuclei from Fermi Large Area Telescope

We study the possibility that the $γ$-ray loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR), through the correlation analysis of their locations and the arrival directions of UHECR. We use the $γ$-ray loud AGN with $d\le 100 {\rm Mpc}$ from the second Fermi Large Area Telescope AGN catalog and the UHECR data with $E\ge 55 {\rm EeV}$ observed by Pierre Auger Observatory. The distribution of arrival directions expected from the $γ$-ray loud AGN is compared with that of the observed UHECR using the correlational angular distance distribution and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. We conclude that the hypothesis that the $γ$-ray loud AGN are the dominant sources of UHECR is disfavored unless there is a large smearing effect due to the intergalactic magnetic fields.

Centaurus A as a point source of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

We probe the possibility that Centaurus A (Cen A) is a point source of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) observed by PAO, through the statistical analysis of the arrival direction distribution. For this purpose, we set up the Cen A dominance model for the UHECR sources, in which Cen A contributes the fraction $f_{\rm C}$ of the whole UHECR with energy above $5.5\times10^{19}\,{\rm eV}$ and the isotropic background contributes the remaining $1-f_{\rm C}$ fraction. The effect of the intergalactic magnetic fields on the bending of the trajectory of Cen A originated UHECR is parameterized by the gaussian smearing angle $θ_s$. Using the correlational angular distance distribution (CADD), we identify the excess of UHECR in the Cen A direction and fit the CADD of the observed PAO data by varying two parameters $f_{\rm C}$ and $θ_s$ of the Cen A dominance model. The best-fit parameter values are $f_{\rm C}\approx0.1$ (The corresponding Cen A fraction observed at PAO is $f_{\rm C,PAO}\approx0.15$, that is, about 10 out of 69 UHECR.) and $θ_s=5^\circ$ with the maximum probability $P_{\rm max}=0.29$. Considering the uncertainty concerning the assumption of isotropic background in the Cen A dominance model, we extend the viable parameter ranges to the $2σ$ band, $0.09\lesssim f_{\rm C,PAO}\lesssim 0.25$ and $0^\circ\lesssim θ_s\lesssim 20^\circ$. This result supports the existence of a point source extended by the intergalactic magnetic fields in the direction of Cen A. If Cen A is actually the source responsible for the observed excess of UHECR, the average deflection angle of the excess UHECR implies the order of $10\,{\rm nG}$ intergalactic magnetic field in the vicinity of Cen A.

Statistical Analysis of the Correlation between Active Galactic Nuclei and Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

We develop the statistical methods for comparing two sets of arrival directions of cosmic rays in which the two-dimensional distribution of arrival directions is reduced to the one-dimensional distributions so that the standard one-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test can be applied. Then we apply them to the analysis of correlation between the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) with energies above $5.7\times10^{19}$ eV, observed by Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) and Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), and the active galactic nuclei (AGN) within the distance 100 Mpc. For statistical test, we set up the simple AGN model for UHECR sources in which a certain fraction of observed UHECR are originated from AGN within a chosen distance, assuming that all AGN have equal luminosity and smearing angle of UHECR, and the remaining fraction are from the isotropic background contribution. For the PAO data, our methods exclude not only a hypotheses that the observed UHECR are simply isotropically distributed but also a hypothesis that they are completely originated from the selected AGN. But, the addition of appropriate amount of isotropic component either through the background contribution or through the large smearing effect improves the correlation greatly and makes the AGN hypothesis for UHECR sources a viable one. We also point out that restricting AGN within the distance bin of 40-60 Mpc happens to yield a good correlation without appreciable isotropic component and large smearing effect. For the AGASA data, we don't find any significant correlation with AGN.

Surplus Angle and Sign-flipped Coulomb Force in Projectable Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We obtain the static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory, imposing the detailed balance condition only in the UV limit. We find the solutions in two different coordinate systems, the Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates and the Poincare coordinates, to examine the consequences of imposing the projectability condition. The solutions in two coordinate systems are distinct due to the non-relativistic nature of the HL gravity. In the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates complying with the projectability condition, the solution involves an additional integration constant which yields surplus angle and implies attractive Coulomb force between same charges.

Flaxino dark matter and stau decay

If the spontaneous breaking of Peccei-Quinn symmetry comes from soft supersymmetry breaking, the fermionic partners of the symmetry-breaking fields have mass of order the gravitino mass, and are called flatinos. The lightest flatino, called here the flaxino, is a CDM candidate if it is the lightest supersymmetric particle. We here explore flaxino dark matter assuming that the lightest ordinary supersymmetric particle is the stau, with gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking. The decay of the stau to the flaxino is fast enough not to spoil the standard predictions of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, and its track and decay can be seen in future colliders.

String Cosmology of the D-brane Universe

We analyze homogeneous anisotropic cosmology driven by the dilaton and the self-interacting ``massive'' antisymmetric tensor field which are indispensable bosonic degrees with the graviton in the NS-NS sector of string theories with D-branes. We found the attractor solutions for this system, which show the overall features of general solutions, and confirmed it through numerical analysis. The dilaton possesses the potential due to the presence of the D-brane and the curvature of extra dimensions. In the presence of the non-vanishing antisymmetric tensor field, the homogeneous universe expands anisotropically while the D-brane term dominates. The isotropy is recovered as the dilaton rolls down and the curvature term dominates. With the stabilizing potential for the dilaton, the isotropy can also be recovered.

Axino Light Dark Matter and Neutrino Masses with R-parity Violation

Motivated by the recent observation of the 511 keV $γ$-ray line emissions from the galactic bulge and an explanation for it by the decays of light dark matter particles, we consider the light axino whose mass can be in the 1-10 MeV range, particularly, in the context of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models. We discuss the production processes and cosmological constraints for the light axino dark matter. It is shown that the bilinear R-parity violating terms provide an appropriate mixing between the axino and neutrinos so that the light axino decays dominantly to $e^+ e^- ν$. We point out that the same bilinear R-parity violations consistently give both the lifetime of the axino required to explain the observed 511 keV $γ$-rays and the observed neutrino masses and mixing.

Cosmological Aspects of the D-brane World

The D-brane world is an idea that we are living on the D-brane imbedded in a 10- or 11-dimensional spacetime of string theories, aiming at the construction of realistic models from string theories. We investigate the cosmological aspects of the D-brane world, focusing on homogeneous anisotropic cosmology driven by the dilaton and the NS-NS 2-form field which becomes massive in the presence of the D-brane. The dilaton possesses the potential due to the presence of the D-brane, various form field fluxes, and the curvature of extra dimensions. In the absence of stabilizing potential, we found the attractor solutions for this system which show the overall features of general solutions. In the presence of the non-vanishing NS-NS 2-form field, the homogeneous universe expands anisotropically while the D-brane term dominates. The isotropy is recovered as the dilaton rolls down and the curvature term dominates. With the stabilizing potential for the dilaton, the anisotropy developed by the initial NS-NS 2-form field flux is erased as the NS-NS 2-form field begins to oscillate around the minimum, forming the B-matter, and the isotropic matter-dominated universe is obtained.

Cosmological implication of antisymmetric tensor field on D-brane

We discuss the cosmological implications of an antisymmetric tensor field when it experiences a kind of ``Higgs mechanism,'' including nonlocal interaction terms, on D-branes. Even when a huge magnetic-condensation-inducing anisotropy is assumed in the early universe, the expansion of the universe leads to an isotropic $B$-matter-dominated universe.

Dilaton Stabilization and Inflation in the D-brane World

We study the dilaton stabilization in the D-brane world in which a D-brane constitutes our universe. The dilaton can be stabilized due to the interplay between the D-brane tension and the negative scalar curvature of extra dimensions. Cosmic evolution of the dilaton is investigated with the obtained dilaton potential and it is found that inflation can be realized before the settlement of the dilaton.

Cosmology of Antisymmetric Tensor Field in D-brane Universe

We analyze homogeneous, anisotropic cosmology driven by a self-interacting ``massive'' antisymmetric tensor field $B_{μν}$ which is present in string theories with D-branes. Time-dependent magnetic $B$ field existing in the early universe can lead to the Bianchi type I universe. Evolutions of such a tensor field are solved exactly or numerically in the universe dominated by vacuum energy, radiation, and $B$ field itself. The matter-like behavior of the $B$ field (dubbed as ``$B$-matter'') ensures that the anisotropy disappears at late time and thus becomes unobservable in a reasonable cosmological scenario. Such a feature should be contrasted to the cosmology of the conventional massless antisymmetric tensor field.

Unstable D-branes and String Cosmology

Cosmological implication of rolling tachyons is reported in the context of effective field theory. With a brief review of rolling tachyons in both flat and curved spacetimes, we study the string cosmological model with both tachyon and dilaton. In the string frame, flat space solutions of both initial-stage and late-time are obtained in closed form. In the Einstein frame, every expanding solution is decelerating. When a Born-Infeld U(1) gauge field is coupled, enhancement of e-folding of scale factor is also discussed by numerical analysis.

Constraining superheavy dark matter model of UHECR with SUGAR data

Models which associate the origin of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) with decays of relic superheavy particles predict the anisotropy of UHECR flux toward the Galactic center. We use the existing SUGAR data, which covered the Galactic center best so far, to look for such a signal and limit the fraction of UHECR produced by this mechanism. The absence of anisotropy toward the Galactic center in the SUGAR data implies at 95% confidence level that the fraction of SHDM-related cosmic rays should be less than 20% at $E>1\times10^{19}$ eV and less than 50% at $E>4\times10^{19}$ eV.

Electromagnetic String Fluid in Rolling Tachyon

We study Born-Infeld type effective action for unstable D3-brane system including a tachyon and an Abelian gauge field, and find the rolling tachyon with constant electric and magnetic fields as the most general homogeneous solution. Tachyonic vacua are characterized by magnitudes of the electric and magnetic fields and the angle between them. Analysis of small fluctuations in this background shows that the obtained configuration may be interpreted as a fluid consisting of string-like objects carrying electric and magnetic fields. They are stretched along one direction and the rolling tachyon move in a perpendicular direction to the strings. Direction of the propagating waves coincides with that of strings with velocity equal to electric field.

Cosmology of Rolling Tachyon

We study dynamics of rolling tachyon and Abelian gauge field on unstable D-branes, of which effective action is given by Born-Infeld type nonlocal action. Possible cosmological evolutions are also discussed. In the Einstein frame of string cosmology, every expanding flat universe is proven to be decelerating.
