Rolling Tachyons in String Cosmology

We study the role of rolling tachyons in the cosmological model with dilatonic gravity. In the string frame, flat space solutions of both initial-stage and late-time are obtained in closed form. In the Einstein frame, we show that every expanding solution is decelerating.

Axinos as Dark Matter

Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model that incorporate the axion solution to the strong CP problem necessarily contain also the axino, the fermionic partner of the axion. In contrast to the neutralino and the gravitino, the axino mass is generically not of the order of the supersymmetry-breaking scale and can be much smaller. The axino is therefore an intriguing candidate for a stable superpartner. In a previous Letter [1] it was shown that axinos are a natural candidate for cold dark matter in the Universe when they are generated non-thermally through out-of-equilibrium neutralino decays. Here, we extend the study of non-thermal production and include a competing thermal production mechanism through scatterings and decays of particles in the plasma. We identify axino masses in the range of tens of MeV to several GeV (depending on the scenario) as corresponding to cold axino relics if the reheating temperature $\treh$ is less than about $5\times10^4\gev$. At higher $\treh$ and lower mass, axinos could constitute warm dark matter. In the scenario with axinos as relics, the gravitino problem finds a natural solution. The lightest superpartner of the Standard Model spectrum remains effectively stable in high-energy detectors but may be either neutral or charged. The usual highly restrictive constraint $\abundchi\lsim1$ on the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino becomes void.

Cosmology of Randall-Sundrum models

There are many interesting issues in the brane world with a large/warped extra dimension. We focus on the cosmological aspects. We review the cosmological solutions of the brane world and how the conventional four-dimensional cosmology is recovered by including the effect of stabilization. Its implications on the mass hierarchy and the cosmological constant are discussed.

Cosmological constraints on a Peccei-Quinn flatino as the lightest supersymmetric particle

In an interesting class of models, non-renormalizable terms of the superpotential are responsible for the spontanteous breaking of Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry as well as the generation of the $μ$ term. The flaton fields which break PQ symmetry are accompanied by flatinos, and the lightest flatino (the LSP) can be the stable, while the decay of the lightest neutralino (the NLSP) might be visible at colliders with a low axion scale. We examine the cosmology of these models, involving thermal inflation just after the PQ phase transition. The branching ratio of flatons into axions must be small so as not to interfere with nucleosynthesis, and flatons must not decay into the LSP or it will be over-abundant. We explore a simple model, with light flatons which can decay into $Z$ or $W$ bosons, or into a light Higgs ($h^0$) plus a $Z$ boson, to show that such features can be realized in a wide range of parameter space. The mass of the NLSP can be as low as $(m_{h^0}+m_Z)/2$, with an axion scale of order $10^{10}$ GeV and a final reheat temperature typically of order $10\GeV$. Then, the flatino LSP is a good dark matter candidate because the reheat temperature can be high enough to allow its production from the decay of the thermalized LSP, while low enough to prevent its overproduction from the decay of sfermions.

Cosmology of Randall-Sundrum models with an extra dimension stabilized by balancing bulk matter

We provide the cosmological solutions for Randall-Sundrum models with the bulk energy-momentum $\hat T^5_5$ incorporated. It alters the Friedmann equation for the brane scale factor. We make a specific choice of $\hat T^5_5$ which is adjusted to stabilize the extra dimension. This makes it possible to compactify the extra dimension with a single positive tension brane, and this model provides a RS-type solution to the cosmological constant problem. When the same idea is applied to the RS model with two branes, the wrong sign of Friedmann equation for the negative tension brane can be resolved and usual FRW cosmology is reproduced for the brane.

Inflation and Gauge Hierarchy in Randall-Sundrum Compactification

We obtain the general inflationary solutions for the slab of five-dimensional AdS spacetime where the fifth dimension is an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$ and two three-branes reside at its boundaries, of which the Randall-Sundrum model corresponds to the static limit. The investigation of the general solutions and their static limit reveals that the RS model recasts both the cosmological constant problem and the gauge hierarchy problem into the balancing problem of the bulk and the brane cosmological constants.

Nonthermal Axino as Cool Dark Matter in Supersymmetric Standard Model without R-parity

We point out that the axino predicted as the supersymmetric partner of the axion is a good candidate for the recently proposed sterile neutrino cool dark matter. The axino mass falls into the right range in the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. A sizable mixing of the axino with active neutrinos arises when R-parity violation is allowed and the resulting neutrino masses and mixing accommodate the atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations simultaneously.

Cosmological Gravitino Production in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Models

We study the cosmological gravitino production in gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models, while properly taking into account the existence of the messenger mass scale. It is found that for sizable parameter range of the model the messenger sector contribution leads to more stringent upper bound on the reheat temperature obtained from the condition that the universe should not be overclosed by relic gravitinos. However it turns out that in the limit of relatively low messenger scale and large gravitino mass, the relic gravitino mass density can be smaller than the critical density independently of the reheat temperature, suggesting the possibility in this limit to have a high reheat temperature without the dilution of gravitinos at late time.

Moduli Stabilization in Heterotic $M$-theory

We examine the stabilization of the two typical moduli, the length $ρ$ of the eleventh segment and the volume $V$ of the internal six manifold, in compactified heterotic $M$-theory. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the phenomenologically favored vacuum expectation values of $ρ$ and $V$ can be obtained by the combined effects of multi-gaugino condensations on the hidden wall and the membrane instantons wrapping the three cycle of the internal six manifold.

Cosmology of Light Moduli

In string/M-theory with a large compactification radius, some axion-like moduli can be much lighter than the gravitino. Generic moduli in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models also have a mass far below the weak scale. Motivated by these, we examine the cosmological implications of light moduli for the mass range from the weak scale to an extremely small scale of order 10^{-26} eV, and obtain an upper bound on the initial moduli misalignment for both cases with and without a late entropy production.

Four-Dimensional Effective Supergravity and Soft Terms in M-Theory

We provide a simple macroscopic analysis of the four-dimensional effective supergravity of the Hořava-Witten M-theory which is expanded in powers of $κ^{2/3}/ρV^{1/3}$ and $κ^{2/3}ρ/V^{2/3}$ where $κ^2$, $V$ and $ρ$ denote the eleven-dimensional gravitational coupling, the Calabi-Yau volume and the eleventh length respectively. Possible higher order terms in the Kähler potential are identified and matched with the heterotic string corrections. In the context of this M-theory expansion, we analyze the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms under the assumption that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by the auxiliary components of the bulk moduli superfields. It is examined how the pattern of soft terms changes when one moves from the weakly coupled heterotic string limit to the M-theory limit.

Orbifolds with continuous Wilson lines and soft terms

Orbifold compactifications with continuous Wilson lines have very interesting characteristics and as a consequence they are candidates to obtain realistic models. We perform an analysis of the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms arising in this type of compactifications. We also compare these results with those of orbifolds without including continuous Wilson lines. Their phenomenological properties turn out to be similar.

Axion Cosmology with a Stronger QCD in the Early Universe

We examine in the context of supersymmetric models whether the usual cosmological upper bound on the axion decay constant can be relaxed by assuming a period of stronger QCD in the early universe. By evaluating the axion potential in the early universe and also taking into account the dilaton potential energy, it is argued that a stronger QCD is not useful for raising up the bound.

A dark matter solution from the supersymmetric axion model

We study the effect of the late decaying saxino (the scalar superpartner of the axion) and find out that there is a possible dark matter solution from a class of supersymmetric extensions of the invisible axion model. In this class of models, the saxino which decays into two axions acts as the late decaying particle which reconciles the cold dark matter model with high values of the Hubble constant. Recent observations of the Hubble constant are converging to $H_0=70\!-\!80\,{\rm km}\,{\rm sec}^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, which would be inconsistent with the standard mixed dark matter model. This class of models provides a plausible framework for the alternative cold dark matter plus late decaying particle model, with the interesting possibility that both cold dark matter and the extra radiation consist of axion.

Dark Matter and Structure Formation with Late Decaying Particles

Since it became evident that the CDM model for cosmic structure formation predicts smaller power on large scales than observed, many alternatives have been suggested. Among them, the existence of late decaying particle can cure it by delaying the beginning of the matter domination and increasing the horizon length at that time. We discuss the realization of this scenario and present the light neutrino and the light axino as possible examples of working particle physics model. We point out that the increased power at sub-galaxy scale predicted by this scenario could lead to rich sub-galaxy structures.

Dark Matters in Axino Gravitino Cosmology

It is suggested that the axino mass in the 1 MeV region and gravitino mass in the eV region can provide an axino lifetime of order of the time of photon decoupling. In this case, some undecayed axinos act like cold dark matters and some axino decay products (gravitinos and hot axions) act like hot dark matters at the time of galaxy formation.

Coupling Constant Unification and LEP Data

The recent LEP data for gauge coupling constants constrain many grand unified models. In this paper, we study several possibilities for unification of gauge coupling constants. Without an intermediate mass scale, the minimal supersymmetric standard model is the only possibility. For one intermediate mass scale, it is possible to have many routes toward grand unification: $SO(10)\rightarrow SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1) , SU(7), SU(8)$, etc. We present also simple relations for the possibility of unification.
