Nonreciprocal Ballistic Transport in Asymmetric Bands

Nonreciprocal transport in uniform systems has attracted great research interest recently and the existing theories mainly focus on the diffusive regime. In this study, we uncover a novel scenario for nonreciprocal charge transport in the ballistic regime enabled by asymmetric band structures of the system. The asymmetry of the bands induces unequal Coulomb potentials within the system as the bias voltage imposed by the electrodes inverts its sign. As a result, the bands undergo different energy shifts as the current flows in opposite directions, giving rise to the nonreciprocity. Utilizing the gauge-invariant nonlinear transport theory, we show that the nonreciprocal transport predominantly originates from the second-order conductance, which violates the Onsager reciprocal relation but fulfills a generalized reciprocal relation similar to that of unidirectional magnetoresistance. The ballistic nonreciprocal transport phenomena differ from the diffusive ones by considering the internal asymmetric Coulomb potential, a factor not accounted for in diffusive cases but undeniably crucial in ballistic scenarios. Our work opens a avenue for implementing nonreciprocal transport in the ballistic regime and provides an alternative perspective for further experimental explorations for nonreciprocal transport.

Constraining braneworlds with entanglement entropy

We propose swampland criteria for braneworlds viewed as effective field theories of defects coupled to semiclassical gravity. We do this by exploiting their holographic interpretation. We focus on general features of entanglement entropies and their holographic calculations. Entropies have to be positive. Furthermore, causality imposes certain constraints on the surfaces that are used holographically to compute them, most notably a property known as causal wedge inclusion. As a test case, we explicitly constrain the Dvali--Gabadadze--Porrati term as a second-order-in-derivatives correction to the Randall--Sundrum action. We conclude by discussing the implications of these criteria for the question on whether entanglement islands in theories with massless gravitons are possible in Karch--Randall braneworlds.

Modeling Dynamic Heterogeneous Graph and Node Importance for Future Citation Prediction

Accurate citation count prediction of newly published papers could help editors and readers rapidly figure out the influential papers in the future. Though many approaches are proposed to predict a paper's future citation, most ignore the dynamic heterogeneous graph structure or node importance in academic networks. To cope with this problem, we propose a Dynamic heterogeneous Graph and Node Importance network (DGNI) learning framework, which fully leverages the dynamic heterogeneous graph and node importance information to predict future citation trends of newly published papers. First, a dynamic heterogeneous network embedding module is provided to capture the dynamic evolutionary trends of the whole academic network. Then, a node importance embedding module is proposed to capture the global consistency relationship to figure out each paper's node importance. Finally, the dynamic evolutionary trend embeddings and node importance embeddings calculated above are combined to jointly predict the future citation counts of each paper, by a log-normal distribution model according to multi-faced paper node representations. Extensive experiments on two large-scale datasets demonstrate that our model significantly improves all indicators compared to the SOTA models.

A Localization Method of High Energy Transients for All-Sky Gamma-Ray Monitor

Fast and reliable localization of high-energy transients is crucial for characterizing the burst properties and guiding the follow-up observations. Localization based on the relative counts of different detectors has been widely used for all-sky gamma-ray monitors. There are two major methods for this counts distribution localization: $χ^{2}$ minimization method and the Bayesian method. Here we propose a modified Bayesian method that could take advantage of both the accuracy of the Bayesian method and the simplicity of the $χ^{2}$ method. With comprehensive simulations, we find that our Bayesian method with Poisson likelihood is generally more applicable for various bursts than $χ^{2}$ method, especially for weak bursts. We further proposed a location-spectrum iteration approach based on the Bayesian inference, which could alleviate the problems caused by the spectral difference between the burst and location templates. Our method is very suitable for scenarios with limited computation resources or time-sensitive applications, such as in-flight localization software, and low-latency localization for rapid follow-up observations.

Learning Analytics from Spoken Discussion Dialogs in Flipped Classroom

The flipped classroom is a new pedagogical strategy that has been gaining increasing importance recently. Spoken discussion dialog commonly occurs in flipped classroom, which embeds rich information indicating processes and progression of students' learning. This study focuses on learning analytics from spoken discussion dialog in the flipped classroom, which aims to collect and analyze the discussion dialogs in flipped classroom in order to get to know group learning processes and outcomes. We have recently transformed a course using the flipped classroom strategy, where students watched video-recorded lectures at home prior to group-based problem-solving discussions in class. The in-class group discussions were recorded throughout the semester and then transcribed manually. After features are extracted from the dialogs by multiple tools and customized processing techniques, we performed statistical analyses to explore the indicators that are related to the group learning outcomes from face-to-face discussion dialogs in the flipped classroom. Then, machine learning algorithms are applied to the indicators in order to predict the group learning outcome as High, Mid or Low. The best prediction accuracy reaches 78.9%, which demonstrates the feasibility of achieving automatic learning outcome prediction from group discussion dialog in flipped classroom.

GECAM Localization of High Energy Transients and the Systematic Error

Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a pair of microsatellites (i.e. GECAM-A and GECAM-B) dedicated to monitoring gamma-ray transients including gravitational waves high-energy electromagnetic counterparts, Gamma-ray Bursts, Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters, Solar Flares and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes. Since launch in December 2020, GECAM-B has detected hundreds of astronomical and terrestrial events. For these bursts, localization is the key for burst identification and classification as well as follow-up observations in multi-wavelength. Here, we propose a Bayesian localization method with Poisson data with Gaussian background profile likelihood to localize GECAM bursts based on the burst counts distribution in detectors with different orientations. We demonstrate that this method can work well for all kinds of bursts, especially for extremely short ones. In addition, we propose a new method to estimate the systematic error of localization based on a confidence level test, which can overcome some problems of the existing method in literature. We validate this method by Monte Carlo simulations, and then apply it to a burst sample with accurate location and find that the mean value of the systematic error of GECAM-B localization is $\sim 2.5^{\circ}$. By considering this systematic error, we can obtain a reliable localization probability map for GECAM bursts. Our methods can be applied to other gamma-ray monitors.

Entanglement of Nambu Spinors and Bell Inequality Test Without Beam Splitters

The identification of electronic entanglement in solids remains elusive so far, which is owed to the difficulty of implementing spinor-selective beam splitters with tunable polarization direction. Here, we propose to overcome this obstacle by producing and detecting a particular type of entanglement encoded in the Nambu spinor or electron-hole components of quasiparticles excited in quantum Hall edge states. Due to the opposite charge of electrons and holes, the detection of the Nambu spinor translates into a charge-current measurement, which eliminates the need for beam splitters and assures a high detection rate. Conveniently, the spinor correlation function at fixed effective polarizations derives from a single current-noise measurement, with the polarization directions of the detector easily adjusted by coupling the edge states to a voltage gate and a superconductor, both having been realized in experiments. We show that the violation of Bell inequality occurs in a large parameter region. Our work opens a new route for probing quasiparticle entanglement in solid-state physics exempt from traditional beam splitters.

BCFT in a Black Hole Background: An Analytical Holographic Model

We study the entanglement phase structure of a holographic boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) in a two-dimensional black hole background. The bulk dual is the AdS$_3$ black string geometry with a Karch-Randall brane. We compute the subregion entanglement entropy of various two-sided bipartitions to elucidate the phase space where a Page curve exists in this setup. We do fully analytical computations on both the gravity side and the field theory side and demonstrate that the results precisely match. We discuss the entanglement phase structure describing where a Page curve exists in this geometry in the context of these analytical results. This is a useful model to study entanglement entropy for quantum field theory on a curved background.

Cyclotron quantization and mirror-time transition on nonreciprocal lattices

Unidirectional transport and localized cyclotron motion are two opposite physical phenomena. Here, we study the interplay effects between them on nonreciprocal lattices subject to a magnetic field. We show that, in the long-wavelength limit, the trajectories of the wave packets always form closed orbits in four-dimensional (4D) complex space. Therefore, the semiclassical quantization rules persist despite the nonreciprocity, which preserves real Landau levels. We predict a different type of non-Hermitian spectral transition induced by the spontaneous breaking of the combined mirror-time reversal ($\mathcal{MT}$) symmetry, which generally exists in such systems. An order parameter is proposed to describe the $\mathcal{MT}$ phase transition, not only to determine the $\mathcal{MT}$ phase boundary but also to quantify the degree of $\mathcal{MT}$-symmetry breaking. Such an order parameter can be generally applied to all types of non-Hermitian phase transitions.

Aspects of AdS$_2$ Quantum Gravity and the Karch-Randall Braneworld

In this paper, we use the Karch-Randall braneworld to study theories of quantum gravity in two dimensional (nearly) anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_2$). We focus on effective gravitational theories in the setup with two Karch-Randall branes embedded in an asymptotically AdS$_3$ bulk forming a wedge. We find the appearance of two-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert gravity (or the Lorenzian version of Marolf-Maxfield theory) when the branes are rigid but the emergence of a class of dilaton gravity models parameterized by the tensions of the two branes when brane fluctuations are accounted for. A special case of our result is Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, which has been proven useful to address many important problems in quantum gravity. An important implication of our work is that these models have holographic duals as one-dimensional quantum mechanics systems. At the end, we discuss a puzzle regarding the energy spectrum and its resolution.

Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity from the Karch-Randall Braneworld

In this letter, we show that Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity can be naturally realized in the Karch-Randall braneworld. Notably the role of the dilaton in JT gravity is played by the radion in a suitably orbifolded version of the setup. In the classical entanglement entropy calculation, there is an apparent degeneracy of Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces. We demonstrate how quantum fluctuations of the radion/dilaton resolves this would-be classical puzzle regarding entanglement wedge reconstruction.

Inconsistency of Islands in Theories with Long-Range Gravity

In ordinary gravitational theories, any local bulk operator in an entanglement wedge is accompanied by a long-range gravitational dressing that extends to the asymptotic part of the wedge. Islands are the only known examples of entanglement wedges that are disconnected from the asymptotic region of spacetime. In this paper, we show that the lack of an asymptotic region in islands creates a potential puzzle that involves the gravitational Gauss law, independently of whether or not there is a non-gravitational bath. In a theory with long-range gravity, the energy of an excitation localized to the island can be detected from outside the island, in contradiction with the principle that operators in an entanglement wedge should commute with operators from its complement. In several known examples, we show that this tension is resolved because islands appear in conjunction with a massive graviton. We also derive some additional consistency conditions that must be obeyed by islands in decoupled systems. Our arguments suggest that islands might not constitute consistent entanglement wedges in standard theories of massless gravity where the Gauss law applies.

Entanglement Phase Structure of a Holographic BCFT in a Black Hole Background

We compute holographic entanglement entropy for subregions of a BCFT thermal state living on a nongravitating black hole background. The system we consider is doubly holographic and dual to an eternal black string with an embedded Karch-Randall brane that is parameterized by its angle. Entanglement islands are conventionally expected to emerge at late times to preserve unitarity at finite temperature, but recent calculations at zero temperature have shown such islands do not exist when the brane lies below a critical angle. When working at finite temperature in the context of a black string, we find that islands exist even when the brane lies below the critical angle. We note that although these islands exist when they are needed to preserve unitarity, they are restricted to a finite connected region on the brane which we call the atoll. Depending on two parameters -- the size of the subregion and the brane angle -- the entanglement entropy either remains constant in time or follows a Page curve. We discuss this rich phase structure in the context of bulk reconstruction.

Fractons and exotic symmetries from branes

The emerging study of fractons, a new type of quasi-particle with restricted mobility, has motivated the construction of several classes of interesting continuum quantum field theories with novel properties. One such class consists of foliated field theories which, roughly, are built by coupling together fields supported on the leaves of foliations of spacetime. Another approach, which we refer to as exotic field theory, focuses on constructing Lagrangians consistent with special symmetries (like subsystem symmetries) that are adjacent to fracton physics. A third framework is that of infinite-component Chern-Simons theories, which attempts to generalize the role of conventional Chern-Simons theory in describing (2+1)D Abelian topological order to fractonic order in (3+1)D. The study of these theories is ongoing, and many of their properties remain to be understood. Historically, it has been fruitful to study QFTs by embedding them into string theory. One way this can be done is via D-branes, extended objects whose dynamics can, at low energies, be described in terms of conventional quantum field theory. QFTs that can be realized in this way can then be analyzed using the rich mathematical and physical structure of string theory. In this paper, we show that foliated field theories, exotic field theories, and infinite-component Chern-Simons theories can all be realized on the world-volumes of branes. We hope that these constructions will ultimately yield valuable insights into the physics of these interesting field theories.

Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Three-dimensional Higher-order Topological Insulator

Hinge states are the hallmark of the 3D higher-order topological insulator(HOTI). Here, we show that chiral hinge states can be identified by the magnetic field induced Aharonov-Bohm(AB) oscillation of the electron conductance in the interferometer constructed by HOTI and normal metal. Unlike AB interferometer of 3D topological insulator(TI), we find that there are different AB oscillation frequencies for a given direction of magnetic field in 3D HOTI. And the oscillation frequencies are also strongly depending on the direction of magnetic field. The main conclusion in our work is that there exists a universal linear relation between different oscillation frequencies. Here, by constructing an interference model of hinge states loops, we show both analytically and numerically that the linear relation is fulfilled in the HOTI effective model. The four basic frequencies in the work are labeled as $ω_x$, $ω_y$, $ω_{x+y}$, $ω_{x-y}$ and the main linear relations we demonstrate here are $ω_{x\pm y}=ω_x \pm ω_y$. These results provide an effective way for the identification of the chiral hinge states, and the oscillation signatures are stable with different sample size and bias.

Holographic BCFTs and Communicating Black Holes

We study the AdS/BCFT duality between two-dimensional conformal field theories with two boundaries and three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with two Karch-Randall branes. We compute the entanglement entropy of a bipartition of the BCFT, on both the gravity side and the field theory side. At finite temperature this entanglement entropy characterizes the communication between two braneworld black holes, coupled to each other through a common bath. We find a Page curve consistent with unitarity. The gravitational result, computed using double-holographically realized quantum extremal surfaces, matches the conformal field theory calculation. At zero temperature, we obtain an interesting extension of the AdS$_3$/BCFT$_2$ correspondence. For a central charge $c$, we find a gap $(\frac{c}{16},\frac{c}{12})$ in the spectrum of the scaling dimension $Δ_{\text{bcc}}$ of the boundary condition changing operator (which interpolates mismatched boundary conditions on the two boundaries of the BCFT). Depending on the value of $Δ_{\text{bcc}}$, the gravitational dual is either a defect global AdS$_3$ geometry or a single sided black hole, and in both cases there are two Karch-Randall branes.

Sign reversal of magnetoresistivity in massive nodal-line semimetals due to Lifshitz transition of Fermi surface

Topological nodal-line semimetals offer an interesting research platform to explore novel phenomena associated with its torus-shaped Fermi surface. Here, we study magnetotransport in the massive nodal-line semimetal with spin-orbit coupling and finite Berry curvature distribution which exists in many candidates. The magnetic field leads to a deformation of the Fermi torus through its coupling to the orbital magnetic moment, which turns out to be the main scenario of the magnetoresistivity (MR) induced by the Berry curvature effect. We show that a small deformation of the Fermi surface yields a positive MR $\propto B^2$, different from the negative MR by pure Berry curvature effect in other topological systems. As the magnetic field increases to a critical value, a topological Lifshitz transition of the Fermi surface can be induced, and the MR inverts its sign at the same time. The temperature dependence of the MR is investigated, which shows a totally different behavior before and after the Lifshitz transition. Our work uncovers a novel scenario of the MR induced solely by the deformation of the Fermi surface and establishes a relation between the Fermi surface topology and the sign of the MR.

Information Transfer with a Gravitating Bath

Late-time dominance of entanglement islands plays a critical role in addressing the information paradox for black holes in AdS coupled to an asymptotic non-gravitational bath. A natural question is how this observation can be extended to gravitational systems. To gain insight into this question, we explore how this story is modified within the context of Karch-Randall braneworlds when we allow the asymptotic bath to couple to dynamical gravity. We find that because of the inability to separate degrees of freedom by spatial location when defining the radiation region, the entanglement entropy of radiation emitted into the bath is a time-independent constant, consistent with recent work on black hole information in asymptotically flat space. If we instead consider an entanglement entropy between two sectors of a specific division of the Hilbert space, we then find non-trivial time-dependence, with the Page time a monotonically decreasing function of the brane angle -- provided both branes are below a particular angle. However, the properties of the entropy depend discontinuously on this angle, which is the first example of such discontinuous behavior for an AdS brane in AdS space.
