An Information Paradox and Its Resolution in de Sitter Holography

We formulate a version of the information paradox in de Sitter spacetime and show that it is solved by the emergence of entanglement islands in the context of the DS/dS correspondence; in particular, the entanglement entropy of a subregion obeys a time-dependent Page curve. Our construction works in general spacetime dimensions and keeps the graviton massless. We interpret the resulting behavior of the entanglement entropy using double holography. It suggests that the spatial distribution of microscopic degrees of freedom depends on descriptions, as in the case of a black hole. In the static (distant) description of de Sitter (black hole) spacetime, these degrees of freedom represent microstates associated with the Gibbons-Hawking (Bekenstein-Hawking) entropy and are localized toward the horizon. On the other hand, in a global (effective two-sided) description, which is obtained by the quantum analog of analytic continuation and is intrinsically semiclassical, they are distributed uniformly and in a unique semiclassical de Sitter (black hole) vacuum state.

A Potential Mechanism for Inflation from Swampland Conjectures

Inflation is the currently accepted paradigm for the beginnings of the Universe. To explain the observed almost scale invariant spectrum of density perturbations with only a slight spectral tilt, inflation must have been "slow roll", that is with a potential with sufficiently small slope. While the origin of inflationary structure is intrinsically quantum mechanical, gravity gets treated semiclassically within inflationary models. Recent work, in terms of the so called de-Sitter swampland conjecture, has called into question whether slow roll inflation is consistent with a complete theory of quantum gravity in the presence of a positive vacuum energy density, which is a key ingredient in the inflationary paradigm. In this work, we show that, in fact, if we understand this conjecture correctly and with another swampland conjecture, the so-called distance conjecture, involved we get a potential mechanism for slow roll inflation and we argue that here fine-tuning is not a technical problem.

Non-local Entanglement and Fast Scrambling in De-Sitter Holography

We study holographic entanglement and information scrambling in de-Sitter (dS) space in the context of the DS/dS correspondence. We find that our previously identified non-local entanglement structure of dS vacua can be extended out of the time-reflection symmetric slice. We extend the geometry to a two-sided configuration and calculate the zero-time mutual information between two intervals on different sides when there is a localized shock wave in the bulk. Interestingly, we find that the information scrambling time saturates the fast scrambler bound proposed by Sekino and Susskind and that the shock wave renders a wormhole to be traversable. Furthermore, we calculate a two-sided out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) in the late time regime and we see that, before scrambling, it exponentially grows with an exponent whose value saturates the maximal bound of chaos proposed by Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford. At the end, we provide an explanation why the exponential growing of the late-time OTOC with the maximal bound of chaos saturated and the traversability of the wormhole are simple results of the non-local entanglement structure and point out that this is a realization of the ER=EPR proposal.

Massive Islands

We comment on the role of the graviton mass in recent calculations of the Page curve using holographic ideas. All reliable calculations of the Page curve in more than 2+1 spacetime dimensions have been performed in systems with massive gravitons. A crucial ingredient in these calculations is the formation of islands, regions that contribute to the entropy of degrees of freedom located elsewhere. While most often simply ignored, it is indeed true that mass of the graviton does not appear to significantly affect the calculations that appeared in the literature. We use the freedom to change the graviton mass to give an extremely simple model of analytically tractable island formation in general dimensions. We do however note that if one attempts to take the limit of zero graviton mass, any contribution from the islands disappears. This raises the question to what extent entanglement islands can play a role in standard massless gravity.

$T\bar{T}$ Deformation and the Complexity=Volume Conjecture

Complexity in quantum physics measures how difficult a state can be reached from a reference state and more precisely it is the number of fundamental unitary gates we have to operate to transform the reference state to the state we are considering. In the holographic context, based on several explicit calculations and arguments, it is conjectured that certain bulk volume calculates the boundary field theory subregion complexity. In this paper, we will show that the $T\bar{T}$ deformation shows a strong signal of the correctness of this complexity equals volume conjecture. A bonus is a way to look at the $T\bar{T}$ deformation, by its reversibility, as operating a unitary quantum circuit which prepares states in quantum field theory.

Non-Landau Quantum Phase Transitions and nearly-Marginal non-Fermi Liquid

Non-fermi liquid and unconventional quantum critical points (QCP) with strong fractionalization are two exceptional phenomena beyond the classic condensed matter doctrines, both of which could occur in strongly interacting quantum many-body systems. This work demonstrates that using a controlled method one can construct a non-Fermi liquid within a considerable energy window based on the unique physics of unconventional QCPs. We will focus on the "nearly-marginal non-Fermi liquid", defined as a state whose fermion self-energy scales as $Σ_f(i ω) \sim i \mathrm{sgn}(ω)|ω|^α$ with $α$ close to $1$ in a considerable energy window. The nearly-marginal non-fermi liquid is obtained by coupling an electron fermi surface to unconventional QCPs that are beyond the Landau's paradigm. This mechanism relies on the observation that the anomalous dimension $η$ of the order parameter of these unconventional QCPs can be close to $1$, which is significantly larger than conventional Landau phase transitions, for example the Wilson-Fisher fixed points. The fact that $η\sim 1$ justifies a perturbative renormalization group calculation proposed earlier. Various candidate QCPs that meet this desired condition are proposed.

Distance Conjecture and De-Sitter Quantum Gravity

Motivated by the early discovery of the gigantic landscape of string theory vacua, in recent years people switched direction to try to find constraints on low energy effective field theories from UV-complete descriptions for example quantum gravity or string theory. Those constraints are called swampland criteria. Among the proposed swampland criteria the distance conjecture is the most well-motivated one from the universal behavior of string theory compactifications. It claims that for a type of scalar fields, called moduli, the effective field theory description will break down if it moves a large distance in field (moduli) space. In this work, we will show that in one proposal for a complete theory of quantum gravity including positive vacuum energy, the so called DS/dS correspondence, there is a strong signal of the validity of the distance conjecture.

Boundary Criticality of Topological Quantum Phase Transitions in $2d$ systems

We discuss the boundary critical behaviors of two dimensional quantum phase transitions with fractionalized degrees of freedom in the bulk, motivated by the fact that usually it is the $1d$ boundary that is exposed and can be conveniently probed in many experimental platforms. In particular, we mainly discuss boundary criticality of two examples: i. the quantum phase transition between a $2d$ $Z_2$ topological order and an ordered phase with spontaneous symmetry breaking; ii. the continuous quantum phase transition between metal and a particular type of Mott insulator (U(1) spin liquid). This theoretical study could be relevant to many purely $2d$ systems, where recent experiments have found correlated insulator, superconductor, and metal in the same phase diagram.

Some Information Theoretic Aspects of De-Sitter Holography

Built on our observation that entangling surfaces of the boundary field theory are great co-dimension one spheres in the context of DS/dS correspondence, we study some information theoretic quantities of the field theory dual intensively using holographic proposals. We will focus on entanglement entropy (EE), entanglement of purification (EoP) and complexity. Several fundamental observations and analysis are provided. For EE, we focus on its scaling behavior, which indicates the nature of the relevant degrees of freedom. Moreover, we find that EE provides us with important information of the energy spectrum in pure dS and it also leads us to the speculation that the field theory dual is chaotic or non-integrable. For EoP, an interesting phenomenon we call "Entanglement of Purification Jump" is observed according to which we propose two puzzles regarding EoP and EE in the context of dS holography. For complexity, we find that the Complexity=Volume proposal does not provide a well-defined way to compute complexity for pure dS. However, it does provide a well-defined way to compute complexity in the $T\bar{T}+Λ_{2}$ deformed case. At the end, we will use the surface/state correspondence to resolve all the puzzles and hence reach a consistent information theoretic picture of dS holography. Moreover, we will provide evidence for our former proposal that the $T\bar{T}+\cdots$ deformations are operating quantum circuits and study the non-locality of the field theory algebra suggested by the surface/state correspondence.

VLSI Mask Optimization: From Shallow To Deep Learning

VLSI mask optimization is one of the most critical stages in manufacturability aware design, which is costly due to the complicated mask optimization and lithography simulation. Recent researches have shown prominent advantages of machine learning techniques dealing with complicated and big data problems, which bring potential of dedicated machine learning solution for DFM problems and facilitate the VLSI design cycle. In this paper, we focus on a heterogeneous OPC framework that assists mask layout optimization. Preliminary results show the efficiency and effectiveness of proposed frameworks that have the potential to be alternatives to existing EDA solutions.

Entropy, Entanglement and Swampland Bounds in DS/dS

We calculate the entanglement entropy of the de-Sitter (dS) static patch in the context of the DS/dS correspondence. Interestingly, we find that there exists a one parameter family of bulk minimal surfaces that all have the same area. Two of them have appeared earlier in the literature. All of them correctly calculate the dS entropy. One surface yields the entanglement between the two different CFTs that provide the holographic dual of the bulk DS geometry. The second surface describes the entanglement across the horizon in the boundary static patch. The other surfaces describe a mixture of these two concepts. We also show that in the presence of extra matter fields the former entanglement entropy always exceeds the dS entropy. We interpret this result in the context of entropy bounds in de Sitter space and the swampland program.

Inverse Edelstein effect of the surface states of a topological insulator

The surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators posses the unique property of spin-momentum interlocking. This property gives rise to the interesting inverse Edelstein effect (IEE), in which an applied spin bias $μ$ is converted to a measurable charge voltage difference $V$. We develop a semiclassical theory for the IEE of the surface states of $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$ thin films, which is applicable from the ballistic regime to diffusive regime. We find that the IEE efficiency ratio $γ=V/μ$ exhibits universal dependence on sample size, and approaches $π/4$ in the ballistic limit and $1$ in the diffusive limit.

Ion behavior and interelectrode breakdown voltage of a drift tube

We experimentally studied ion behavior and interelectrode breakdown voltage. The ion behavior of a drift tube directly influences the detection of ion intensity, and then influences the detection sensitivity of a system. Interelectrode voltage and pressure directly influence the ion behavior. Gas discharge between electrodes influences the adjustments required for interelectrode voltage. The experimental results show: ion intensity increases exponentially with the increment of voltage between drift electrodes; ion intensity decreases exponentially as pressure increases; with the increment of pressure, the breakdown voltage at first decreases, and then increases; ion injection has a significant influence on breakdown voltage, and this influence depends on the pressure and shapes of the electrodes. We explain the results above through assumptions and by mathematical methods.
