Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-Assisted Integrated Access and Backhaul

In this paper, we study the impact of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) on the coverage extension of integrated access and backhaul (IAB) networks. Particularly, using a finite stochastic geometry model, with random distributions of user equipments (UEs) in a finite region, and planned hierachical architecture for IAB, we study the service coverage probability defined as the probability of the event that the UEs' minimum rate requirements are satisfied. We present comparisons between different cases including IAB-only, IAB assisted with RIS for backhaul as well as IAB assisted by network controlled repeaters (NCRs). Our investigations focus on wide-area IAB assisted with RIS through the lens of different design architectures and deployments, revealing both conflicts and synergies for minimizing the effect of tree foliage over seasonal changes. Our simulation results reveal both opportunities and challenges towards the implementation of RIS in IAB.

Fast and robust production of quantum superposition states by the fractional shortcut to adiabaticity

The fractional shortcut to adiabaticity (f-STA) for production of quantum superposition states is proposed firstly via a three-level system with $Λ$-type linkage pattern and a four-level system with tripod structure. \textcolor[rgb]{1,0,0}{\sout{The fast, robust and efficient}} \textcolor[rgb]{0,0,1}{\uwave{The fast and robust}} production of the coherent superposition states is studied by comparing the populations for the f-STA and the fractional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (f-STIRAP). The \textcolor[rgb]{1,0,0}{\sout{superposition}} states with equal proportion can be produced by fixing the controllable parameters of the driving pulses at the final moment of the whole process. The effects of the pulse intensity and the time delay of the pulses on the production process are discussed by monitoring the populations on all of the quantum states. In particular, the spontaneous emission arising from the intermediate state is investigated by the quantum master equation. The result reveals that the f-STA exhibits superior advantages over the f-STIRAP in producing the superposition states.

Impact of Cognitive Load on Human Trust in Hybrid Human-Robot Collaboration

Human trust plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of human-robot collaboration. Despite its significance, the development and maintenance of an optimal trust level are obstructed by the complex nature of influencing factors and their mechanisms. This study investigates the effects of cognitive load on human trust within the context of a hybrid human-robot collaboration task. An experiment is conducted where the humans and the robot, acting as team members, collaboratively construct pyramids with differentiated levels of task complexity. Our findings reveal that cognitive load exerts diverse impacts on human trust in the robot. Notably, there is an increase in human trust under conditions of high cognitive load. Furthermore, the rewards for performance are substantially higher in tasks with high cognitive load compared to those with low cognitive load, and a significant correlation exists between human trust and the failure risk of performance in tasks with low and medium cognitive load. By integrating interdependent task steps, this research emphasizes the unique dynamics of hybrid human-robot collaboration scenarios. The insights gained not only contribute to understanding how cognitive load influences trust but also assist developers in optimizing collaborative target selection and designing more effective human-robot interfaces in such environments.

Each Fake News is Fake in its Own Way: An Attribution Multi-Granularity Benchmark for Multimodal Fake News Detection

Social platforms, while facilitating access to information, have also become saturated with a plethora of fake news, resulting in negative consequences. Automatic multimodal fake news detection is a worthwhile pursuit. Existing multimodal fake news datasets only provide binary labels of real or fake. However, real news is alike, while each fake news is fake in its own way. These datasets fail to reflect the mixed nature of various types of multimodal fake news. To bridge the gap, we construct an attributing multi-granularity multimodal fake news detection dataset \amg, revealing the inherent fake pattern. Furthermore, we propose a multi-granularity clue alignment model \our to achieve multimodal fake news detection and attribution. Experimental results demonstrate that \amg is a challenging dataset, and its attribution setting opens up new avenues for future research.

Near-Field Measurement System for the Upper Mid-Band

The upper mid-band (or FR3, spanning 6-24 GHz) is a crucial frequency range for next-generation mobile networks, offering a favorable balance between coverage and spectrum efficiency. From another perspective, the systems operating in the near-field in both indoor environment and outdoor environments can support line-of-sight multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications and be beneficial from the FR3 bands. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to measure the near-field parameters leveraging a recently developed reflection model where the near-field paths can be described by their image points. We show that these image points can be accurately estimated via triangulation from multiple measurements with a small number of antennas in each measurement, thus affording a low-cost procedure for near-field multi-path parameter extraction. A preliminary experimental apparatus is presented comprising 2 transmit and 2 receive antennas mounted on a linear track to measure the 2x2 MIMO channel at various displacements. The system uses a recently-developed wideband radio frequency (RF) transceiver board with fast frequency switching, an FPGA for fast baseband processing, and a new parameter extraction method to recover paths and spherical characteristics from the multiple 2x2 measurements.

An Experimental Multi-Band Channel Characterization in the Upper Mid-Band

The following paper provides a multi-band channel measurement analysis on the frequency range (FR)3. This study focuses on the FR3 low frequencies 6.5 GHz and 8.75 GHz with a setup tailored to the context of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), where the data are collected with and without the presence of a target. A method based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) is used to refine the delays of the channel impulse response estimates. The results reveal that the channel at the lower frequency 6.5 GHz has additional distinguishable multipath components in the presence of the target, while the one associated with the higher frequency 8.75 GHz has more blockage. The set of results reported in this paper serves as a benchmark for future multi-band studies in the FR3 spectrum.

6G Positioning and Sensing Through the Lens of Sustainability, Inclusiveness, and Trustworthiness

6G promises a paradigm shift by integrating positioning and sensing, enhancing not only the communication performance but also enabling location- and context-aware services. Historically, positioning and sensing were focused on cost and performance tradeoffs, implying an escalated demand for resources, such as radio, physical, and computational resources, for improved performance. However, 6G expands this perspective, embracing a set of broader values, namely sustainability, inclusiveness, and trustworthiness. From a joint industrial/academic perspective, this paper aims to shed light on these important value indicators and their relationship with the conventional key performance indicators in the context of positioning and sensing.

AD-DINO: Attention-Dynamic DINO for Distance-Aware Embodied Reference Understanding

Embodied reference understanding is crucial for intelligent agents to predict referents based on human intention through gesture signals and language descriptions. This paper introduces the Attention-Dynamic DINO, a novel framework designed to mitigate misinterpretations of pointing gestures across various interaction contexts. Our approach integrates visual and textual features to simultaneously predict the target object's bounding box and the attention source in pointing gestures. Leveraging the distance-aware nature of nonverbal communication in visual perspective taking, we extend the virtual touch line mechanism and propose an attention-dynamic touch line to represent referring gesture based on interactive distances. The combination of this distance-aware approach and independent prediction of the attention source, enhances the alignment between objects and the gesture represented line. Extensive experiments on the YouRefIt dataset demonstrate the efficacy of our gesture information understanding method in significantly improving task performance. Our model achieves 76.4% accuracy at the 0.25 IoU threshold and, notably, surpasses human performance at the 0.75 IoU threshold, marking a first in this domain. Comparative experiments with distance-unaware understanding methods from previous research further validate the superiority of the Attention-Dynamic Touch Line across diverse contexts.

Digital Twin-Enhanced Wireless Indoor Navigation: Achieving Efficient Environment Sensing with Zero-Shot Reinforcement Learning

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a vital component of future generations of mobile networks, offering not only high data rates but also precise beams, making it ideal for indoor navigation in complex environments. However, the challenges of multipath propagation and noisy signal measurements in indoor spaces complicate the use of mmWave signals for navigation tasks. Traditional physics-based methods, such as following the angle of arrival (AoA), often fall short in complex scenarios, highlighting the need for more sophisticated approaches. Digital twins, as virtual replicas of physical environments, offer a powerful tool for simulating and optimizing mmWave signal propagation in such settings. By creating detailed, physics-based models of real-world spaces, digital twins enable the training of machine learning algorithms in virtual environments, reducing the costs and limitations of physical testing. Despite their advantages, current machine learning models trained in digital twins often overfit specific virtual environments and require costly retraining when applied to new scenarios. In this paper, we propose a Physics-Informed Reinforcement Learning (PIRL) approach that leverages the physical insights provided by digital twins to shape the reinforcement learning (RL) reward function. By integrating physics-based metrics such as signal strength, AoA, and path reflections into the learning process, PIRL enables efficient learning and improved generalization to new environments without retraining. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed PIRL, supported by digital twin simulations, outperforms traditional heuristics and standard RL models, achieving zero-shot generalization in unseen environments and offering a cost-effective, scalable solution for wireless indoor navigation.

Site-Specific Outdoor Propagation Assessment and Ray-Tracing Analysis for Wireless Digital Twins

Digital twinning is becoming increasingly vital in the design and real-time control of future wireless networks by providing precise cost-effective simulations, predictive insights, and real-time data integration. This paper explores the application of digital twinning in optimizing wireless communication systems within urban environments, where building arrangements can critically impact network performances. We develop a digital twin platform to simulate and analyze how factors such as building positioning, base station placement, and antenna design influence wireless propagation. The ray-tracing software package of Matlab is compared with Remcom Wireless InSite. Using a realistic radiation pattern of a base transceiver station (BTS) antenna, ray tracing simulations for signal propagation and interactions in urban landscapes are then extensively examined. By analyzing radio heat maps alongside antenna patterns, we gain valuable insights into optimizing wireless deployment strategies. This study highlights the potential of digital twinning as a critical tool for urban planners and network engineers.

PVAFN: Point-Voxel Attention Fusion Network with Multi-Pooling Enhancing for 3D Object Detection

The integration of point and voxel representations is becoming more common in LiDAR-based 3D object detection. However, this combination often struggles with capturing semantic information effectively. Moreover, relying solely on point features within regions of interest can lead to information loss and limitations in local feature representation. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel two-stage 3D object detector, called Point-Voxel Attention Fusion Network (PVAFN). PVAFN leverages an attention mechanism to improve multi-modal feature fusion during the feature extraction phase. In the refinement stage, it utilizes a multi-pooling strategy to integrate both multi-scale and region-specific information effectively. The point-voxel attention mechanism adaptively combines point cloud and voxel-based Bird's-Eye-View (BEV) features, resulting in richer object representations that help to reduce false detections. Additionally, a multi-pooling enhancement module is introduced to boost the model's perception capabilities. This module employs cluster pooling and pyramid pooling techniques to efficiently capture key geometric details and fine-grained shape structures, thereby enhancing the integration of local and global features. Extensive experiments on the KITTI and Waymo datasets demonstrate that the proposed PVAFN achieves competitive performance. The code and models will be available.

A geometric Elliott invariant and noncommutative rigidity of mapping tori

We prove a rigidity property for mapping tori associated to minimal topological dynamical systems using tools from noncommutative geometry. More precisely, we show that under mild geometric assumptions, an orientation-preserving leafwise homotopy equivalence of two mapping tori associated to $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions on a compact space can be lifted to an isomorphism of their foliation $C^*$-algebras. This property is a noncommutative analogue of topological rigidity in the context of foliated spaces whose space of leaves is singular, where isomorphism type of the $C^*$-algebra replaces homeomorphism type. Our technique is to develop a geometric approach to the Elliott invariant that relies on topological and index-theoretic data from the mapping torus. We also discuss how our construction can be extended to slightly more general homotopy quotients arising from actions of discrete cocompact subgroups of simply connected solvable Lie groups, as well as how the theory can be applied to the magnetic gap-labelling problem for certain Cantor minimal systems.

Uhlmann quench and geometric dynamic quantum phase transition of mixed states

Dynamic quantum phase transitions (DQPT) following quantum quenches exhibit singular behavior of the overlap between the initial and evolved states. Here we present a formalism to incorporate a geometric phase into quench dynamics of mixed quantum states, a process named the Uhlmann quench, based on the Uhlmann parallel transport. To overcome the incompatibility between the Uhlmann parallel-transport condition and Hamiltonian dynamics, we formulate the evolution of purification of the density matrix in a form which not only respects the dynamics according to the density matrix but also follows the Uhlmann parallel-transport condition to generate a geometric phase after a quantum quench. For cyclic processes exemplified by a spin-1/2 system, geometric DQPTs (GDQPTs) can emerge with both singular behavior in the dynamic analogue of the free energy and jumps of the geometric phase. Moreover, the Uhlmann phase reflecting the holonomy is generated at the end of each cycle. The Uhlmann quench thus paves the way for investigating the interplay between quantum dynamics and geometric processes in mixed states.

Local geometry and quantum geometric tensor of mixed states

The quantum geometric tensor (QGT) is a fundamental concept for characterizing the local geometry of quantum states. After casting the geometry of pure quantum states and extracting the QGT, we generalize the geometry to mixed quantum states via the density matrix and its purification. The gauge-invariant QGT of mixed states is derived, whose real and imaginary parts are the Bures metric and the Uhlmann form, respectively. In contrast to the imaginary part of the pure-state QGT that is proportional to the Berry curvature, the Uhlmann form vanishes identically for ordinary physical processes. Moreover, there exists a Pythagorean-like equation that links different local distances and reflect the underlying fibration. The Bures metric of mixed states is shown to reduce to the corresponding Fubini-Study metric of the ground state as temperature approaches zero, establishing a correspondence despite the different underlying fibrations. We also present two examples with contrasting local geometries and discuss experimental implications.

Full-Duplex Millimeter Wave MIMO Channel Estimation: A Neural Network Approach

Millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multi-output (MIMO) is now a reality with great potential for further improvement. We study full-duplex transmissions as an effective way to improve mmWave MIMO systems. Compared to half-duplex systems, full-duplex transmissions may offer higher data rates and lower latency. However, full-duplex transmission is hindered by self-interference (SI) at the receive antennas, and SI channel estimation becomes a crucial step to make the full-duplex systems feasible. In this paper, we address the problem of channel estimation in full-duplex mmWave MIMO systems using neural networks (NNs). Our approach involves sharing pilot resources between user equipments (UEs) and transmit antennas at the base station (BS), aiming to reduce the pilot overhead in full-duplex systems and to achieve a comparable level to that of a half-duplex system. Additionally, in the case of separate antenna configurations in a full-duplex BS, providing channel estimates of transmit antenna (TX) arrays to the downlink UEs poses another challenge, as the TX arrays are not capable of receiving pilot signals. To address this, we employ an NN to map the channel from the downlink UEs to the receive antenna (RX) arrays to the channel from the TX arrays to the downlink UEs. We further elaborate on how NNs perform the estimation with different architectures, (e.g., different numbers of hidden layers), the introduction of non-linear distortion (e.g., with a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC)), and different channel conditions (e.g., low-correlated and high-correlated channels). Our work provides novel insights into NN-based channel estimators.
