Primordial black holes and inflation from double-well potentials

We investigate the formation of large peaks in the inflationary curvature power spectrum from double-well potentials. In such scenarios, the initial CMB spectrum is created at large field values. Subsequently, the inflaton will cross one of the minima and will decelerate rapidly as it reaches the local maximum at the origin, either falling back or crossing it. During this final phase, a significant peak in the curvature power spectrum can be generated. Our analysis reveals that this class of models produces more pronounced peaks than the more commonly studied quasi-inflection point scenarios with less tuning for the model parameters. Finally, we construct an explicit theoretically motivated inflationary scenario that is consistent with the latest CMB observations and capable of generating sufficiently large curvature perturbations for primordial black holes.

Electroweak vacuum decay in metric-affine gravity

We investigate the stability of the electroweak vacuum in metric-affine gravity in which the Standard Model Higgs boson can be non-minimally coupled to both the Ricci scalar and the Holst invariant. We find that vacuum stability is improved in this framework across a wide range of model parameters.

Prospects for Future Binary Black Hole GW Studies in Light of PTA Measurements

NANOGrav and other Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) have discovered a common-spectrum process in the nHz range that may be due to gravitational waves (GWs): if so, they are likely to have been generated by black hole (BH) binaries with total masses $> 10^9 M_{\odot}$. Using the Extended Press-Schechter formalism to model the galactic halo mass function and a simple relation between the halo and BH masses suggests that these binaries have redshifts $z = {O}(1)$ and mass ratios $\gtrsim 10$, and that the GW signal at frequencies above ${O}(10)$~nHz may be dominated by relatively few binaries that could be distinguished experimentally and would yield observable circular polarization. Extrapolating the model to higher frequencies indicates that future GW detectors such as LISA and AEDGE could extend the PTA observations to lower BH masses $\in (10^6, 10^9 ) M_{\odot}$ and $\in (10^3, 10^9) M_{\odot}$.

Gravitational wave microlensing by dressed primordial black holes

We study gravitational wave microlensing by primordial black holes (PBHs), accounting for the effect of a particle dark matter minihalo surrounding them. Such minihaloes are expected when PBHs make up only a fraction of all dark matter. We find that the LIGO-Virgo detections imply a $1σ$ bound on the abundance of PBHs heavier than $50 M_{\odot}$. The next generation observatories can potentially probe PBHs as light as $0.01 M_\odot$ and down to $2\times10^{-4}$ fraction of all dark matter. We also show that these detectors can distinguish between dressed and naked PBHs, providing a novel way to study the distribution of particle dark matter around black holes and potentially shed light on the origins of black holes.

Dynamics of false vacuum bubbles with trapped particles

We study the impact of the ambient fluid on the evolution of collapsing false vacuum bubbles by simulating the dynamics of a coupled bubble-particle system. A significant increase in the mass of the particles across the bubble wall leads to a buildup of those particles inside the false vacuum bubble. We show that the backreaction of the particles on the bubble slows or even reverses the collapse. Consequently, if the particles in the true vacuum become heavier than in the false vacuum, the particle-wall interactions always decrease the compactness that the false vacuum bubbles can reach making their collapse to black holes less likely.

Did JWST observe imprints of axion miniclusters or primordial black holes?

The James Webb Space Telescope has detected surprisingly luminous early galaxies that indicate a tension with the $Λ$CDM. Motivated by scenarios including axion miniclusters or primordial black holes, we consider power-law modifications of the matter power spectrum. We show that the tension could be resolved if dark matter consists of $2\times 10^{-18}{\rm eV}$ axions or if a fraction $f_{\rm PBH} > 0.005$ of dark matter is composed of compact heavy $4\times 10^6 M_\odot (f_{\rm PBH}/0.005)^{-1}$ structures such as primordial black hole clusters. However, in both cases, the star formation efficiency needs to be significantly enhanced.

Bubble dynamics in fluids with N-body simulations

We present a new approach to studies of bubble dynamics in fluids. Relying on particle-based simulations, this method is general and suitable for cases where the commonly used perfect fluid description fails. We study expanding true vacuum bubbles surrounded by free or self-interacting particles and quantify how self-interactions affect the terminal bubble wall velocity. We find that, for sufficiently strongly self-interacting fluids, local thermal equilibrium is maintained around the bubble wall and the fluid profile is similar to that obtained with the perfect fluid description.

Two populations of LIGO-Virgo black holes

We analyse the LIGO-Virgo data, including the recently released GWTC-2 dataset, to test a hypothesis that the data contains more than one population of black holes. We perform a maximum likelihood analysis including a population of astrophysical black holes with a truncated power-law mass function whose merger rate follows from star formation rate, and a population of primordial black holes for which we consider log-normal and critical collapse mass functions. We find that primordial black holes alone are strongly disfavoured by the data, while the best fit is obtained for the template combining astrophysical and primordial merger rates. Alternatively, the data may hint towards two different astrophysical black hole populations. We also update the constraints on primordial black hole abundance from LIGO-Virgo observations finding that in the $2-400M_\odot$ mass range they must comprise less than 0.2% of dark matter.

Anatomy of single-field inflationary models for primordial black holes

We construct an analytically solvable simplified model that captures the essential features for primordial black hole (PBH) production in most models of single-field inflation. The construction makes use of the Wands duality between the constant-roll (or slow-roll) and the preceding ultra-slow-roll phases and can be realized by a simple inflaton potential of two joined parabolas. Within this framework, it is possible to formulate explicit inflationary scenarios consistent with the CMB observations and copious production of PBHs of arbitrary mass. We quantify the variability of the shape of the peak in the curvature power spectrum in different inflationary scenarios and discuss its implications for probing PBHs with scalar-induced gravitational wave backgrounds. We find that the COBE/Firas $μ$-distortion constraints exclude the production of PBHs heavier than $10^4 M_\odot$ in single-field inflation.

Tachyonic Preheating in Plateau Inflation

Plateau inflation is an experimentally consistent framework in which the scale of inflation can be kept relatively low. Close to the edge of the plateau, scalar perturbations are subject to a strong tachyonic instability. Tachyonic preheating is realized when, after inflation, the oscillating inflaton repeatedly re-enters the plateau. We develop the analytic theory of this process and expand the linear approach by including backreaction between the coherent background and growing perturbations. For a family of plateau models, the analytic predictions are confronted with numerical estimates. Our analysis shows that the inflaton fragments in a fraction of an $e$-fold in all examples supporting tachyonic preheating, generalizing the results of previous similar studies. In these scenarios, the scalar-to-tensor ratio is tiny, $r<10^{-7}$.

The Linear Regime of Tachyonic Preheating

Tachyonic preheating is realized when the inflaton repeatedly returns to a convex region of the potential during the post-inflationary oscillating phase. This will induce a strong tachyonic instability and lead to a rapid fragmentation of the coherent field that can complete within a fraction of an $e$-fold. In this paper, we study the linear regime of this process in a model-independent way. To this purpose, we construct simplified models that provide an analytic Floquet theoretic description of mode growth. This approach captures the essential features of well-motivated tachyonic preheating scenarios, including scenarios in which the inflaton is part of a larger scalar multiplet. We show that tachyonic preheating is efficient if the field excursions are sub-Planckian, can produce gravitational waves in the frequency range of current and future gravitational wave interferometers, and can be consistent with any experimentally allowed tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Primordial black holes from spectator field bubbles

We study the evolution of light spectator fields in an asymmetric polynomial potential. During inflation, stochastic fluctuations displace the spectator field from the global minimum of its potential, populating the false vacuum state and thereby allowing for the formation of false vacuum bubbles. By using a lattice simulation, we show that these bubbles begin to contract once they re-enter the horizon and, if sufficiently large, collapse into black holes. This process generally results in the formation of primordial black holes, which, due to the specific shape of their mass function, are constrained to yield at most 1% of the total dark matter abundance. However, the resulting population can source gravitational wave signals observable at the LIGO-Virgo experiments, provide seeds for supermassive black holes or cause a transient matter-dominated phase in the early Universe.

Prospects for probing gravitational waves from primordial black hole binaries

We study the prospects of future gravitational wave (GW) detectors in probing primordial black hole (PBH) binaries. We show that across a broad mass range from $10^{-5}M_\odot$ to $10^7M_\odot$, future GW interferometers provide a potential probe of the PBH abundance that is more sensitive than any currently existing experiment. In particular, we find that galactic PBH binaries with masses as low as $10^{-5}M_\odot$ may be probed with ET, AEDGE and LISA by searching for nearly monochromatic continuous GW signals. Such searches could independently test the PBH interpretation of the ultrashort microlensing events observed by OGLE. We also consider the possibility of observing GWs from asteroid mass PBH binaries through graviton-photon conversion.

Tachyonic Preheating in Palatini $R^2$ Inflation

We study preheating in the Palatini formalism with a quadratic inflaton potential and an added $αR^2$ term. In such models, the oscillating inflaton field repeatedly returns to the plateau of the Einstein frame potential, on which the tachyonic instability fragments the inflaton condensate within less than an e-fold. We find that tachyonic preheating takes place when $α\gtrsim 10^{13}$ and that the energy density of the fragmented field grows with the rate $Γ/H \approx 0.011 \times α^{0.31}$. The model extends the family of plateau models with similar preheating behaviour. Although it contains non-canonical quartic kinetic terms in the Einstein frame, we show that, in the first approximation, these can be neglected during both preheating and inflation.

Cosmological black holes are not described by the Thakurta metric: LIGO-Virgo bounds on PBHs remain unchanged

We show that the physical conditions which induce the Thakurta metric, recently studied by Bœhm {\it et al.} in the context of time-dependent black hole masses, correspond to a single accreting black hole in the entire Universe filled with isotropic non-interacting dust. In such a case, the physics of black hole accretion is not local but tied to the properties of the whole Universe. We show that radiation, primordial black holes or particle dark matter cannot produce the specific energy flux required for supporting the mass growth of Thakurta black holes. In particular, this solution does not apply to black hole binaries. We conclude that cosmological black holes and their mass growth cannot be described by the Thakurta metric, and thus existing constraints on the primordial black hole abundance from the LIGO-Virgo and the CMB measurements remain valid.

An effective field theory of the Delta-resonance

We present an effective field theory of the $Δ$-resonance as an interacting Weinberg's $(3/2,0)\oplus (0,3/2)$ field in the multi-spinor formalism. We derive its interactions with nucleons $N$, pions $π$ and photons $γ$, and compute the $Δ$-resonance cross-sections in pion-nucleon scattering and pion photo-production. The theory contains only the physical spin-3/2 degrees of freedom. Thus, it is intrinsically consistent at the Hamiltonian level and, unlike the commonly used Rarita-Schwinger framework, does not require any additional ad hoc manipulation of couplings or propagators. The symmetries of hadronic physics select a unique operator for each coupling $NπΔ$ and $γπΔ$. The proposed framework can be extended to also describe other higher-spin hadronic resonances.

Reply to "Comment on: Cosmological black holes are not described by the Thakurta metric"

In this reply, we address the comment [arXiv:2105.14908] to our recent paper [arXiv:2105.09328], where we argued that the Thakurta metric does not describe cosmological black holes. We clarify that the mass growth of Thakurta black holes is due to an influx of energy (i.e. accretion), which, by definition, is not a feature of geometry. The conclusions of [arXiv:2105.09328] are independent of the interpretation of this energy flux. We show that the average energy density of primordial Thakurta black holes scales as $a^{-2}$ and requires an unrealistic and fine-tuned energy transfer from a smooth dark matter component to the primordial black hole sector.

Higher-spin particles at high-energy colliders

Using an effective field theory approach for higher-spin fields, we derive the interactions of colour singlet and electrically neutral particles with a spin higher than unity, concentrating on the spin-3/2, spin-2, spin-5/2 and spin-3 cases. We compute the decay rates and production cross sections in the main channels for spin-3/2 and spin-2 states at both electron-positron and hadron colliders, and identify the most promising novel experimental signatures for discovering such particles at the LHC. The discussion is qualitatively extended to the spin-5/2 and spin-3 cases. Higher-spin particles exhibit a rich phenomenology and have signatures that often resemble the ones of supersymmetric and extra-dimensional theories. To enable further studies of higher-spin particles at collider and beyond, we collect the relevant Feynman rules and other technical details.
