Properties of quark-matter cores in massive hybrid stars

Using the constraints from astrophysical observations and heavy-ion experiments, we investigate the equation of state (EOS) of hybrid star matter and the properties of quark-matter cores in hybrid stars. The quark matter interactions in hybrid stars are described based on 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with various vector and vector-isovector coupling constants. In this work, we find that the hybrid star matter EOS is more sensitive to the strength of the vector interaction, and the EOS becomes stiffer with increasing vector strength $R_V$. The vector-isovector interaction characterized by the coupling constant $R_{IV}$ make main contribution to the hadron-quark mixed phase. Meanwhile, we note that a step change of both the sound velocity and the polytropic index $γ$ occurs in the hadron-quark phase transition, and it is restored with the decrease of nucleon and lepton degrees of freedom in the high density quark phase. Although the coupling constants increase the hybrid star maximum mass up to $2.08M_{\odot}$, they also decrease the mass and radius of the quark core and the mixed core. With different quark coupling constants, we also find that the maximum mass and radius of the quark matter core in a stable hybrid star can reach $0.80M_{\odot}$ and 6.95 km, which are close to half of the maximum mass and radius of the complete star. However, properties of quark matter have no effect on the $M = 1.4M_{\odot}$ hybrid star as a result of no quark matter inner core, which can also be confirmed by the criterion of the polytropic index, and thus our results also indicate that the quark interactions have no effect on the tidal deformability $Λ_{1.4}$ of hybrid stars.

Properties of quark matter and hybrid stars from a quasiparticle model

We investigate the properties of hybrid stars with the hadron-quark phase transition by using a quasiparticle model. Results from our study indicate that the coupling constant $g$ can stiffen the EOS of hybrid star matter and thus increase the hybrid star maximum mass and its tidal deformability, whereas it also decreases the mass and radius of the pure quark core. In addition, we find that a step change of the sound velocity occurs in the hadron-quark mixed phase, and it is restored with the decrease of nucleon and lepton degrees of freedom in the high density quark phase. The approximate rule that the polytropic index $γ\leq 1.75$ can also be used as a criterion for separating hadronic from quark matter in our work. The hypothesis of absolutely stable SQM (or "Witten hypothesis") suggests that a hybrid star containing a sufficient amount of SQM in its core will rapidly convert into a strange quark star. The SQM in hybrid stars therefore should break the absolutely stable condition, and the energy per nucleon ($E/A$) of both $ud$QM and SQM must exceed the lowest energy per nucleon 930 MeV. As a result, we provide the maximum mass, minimum radius $R_{1.4}$ and minimum tidal deformation $Λ_{1.4}$ of the hybrid stars as well as the maximum mass and radius of the quark matter core with different $g$ values within the allowable regions ($E/A>930$ MeV) on the $g-B^{1/4}$ plane. Using the constraints from astrophysical observations and heavy-ion experiments for comparison, our results indicate that the recently discovered massive neutron stars be well described as hybrid stars in the quasiparticle model, and confirm that the sizable quark-matter cores ($R_{QC}>6.5$ km) containing the mixed phase can appear in $2M_{\odot}$ massive stars.

Ultrafast and Electrically Tunable Rabi Frequency in a Germanium Hut Wire Hole Spin Qubit

Hole spin qubits based on germanium (Ge) have strong tunable spin orbit interaction (SOI) and ultrafast qubit operation speed. Here we report that the Rabi frequency (f_Rabi) of a hole spin qubit in a Ge hut wire (HW) double quantum dot (DQD) is electrically tuned through the detuning energy and middle gate voltage (V_M). f_Rabi gradually decreases with increasing detuning energy; on the contrary, f_Rabi is positively correlated with V_M. We attribute our results to the change of electric field on SOI and the contribution of the excited state in quantum dots to f_Rabi. We further demonstrate an ultrafast f_Rabi exceeding 1.2 GHz, which evidences the strong SOI in our device. The discovery of an ultrafast and electrically tunable f_Rabi in a hole spin qubit has potential applications in semiconductor quantum computing.

Non-Gaussianity in the warm k-inflation

This paper presents and investigates non-Gaussian perturbations for the warm k-inflation model that is driven by pure kinetic energy. The two complementary components of the overall non-Gaussianity are the three-point and four-point correlations. The intrinsic non-Gaussian component, denoted as the nonlinear parameter f_{NL}^{int}, is rooted in the three-point correlation for the inflaton field. Meanwhile, the δN part non-Gaussianity, denoted as f_{NL}^{δN}, is the contribution attributed to the four-point correlation function of the inflaton field. In this paper, the above two components in warm k-inflation are individually computed and analyzed. Then, comparisons and discussions between them are conducted, and the non-Gaussian theoretical results are compared with experimental observations to determine the range of model parameters within the allowable range of observation.

Multimodal Dual Emotion with Fusion of Visual Sentiment for Rumor Detection

In recent years, rumors have had a devastating impact on society, making rumor detection a significant challenge. However, the studies on rumor detection ignore the intense emotions of images in the rumor content. This paper verifies that the image emotion improves the rumor detection efficiency. A Multimodal Dual Emotion feature in rumor detection, which consists of visual and textual emotions, is proposed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which uses visual emotion in rumor detection. The experiments on real datasets verify that the proposed features outperform the state-of-the-art sentiment features, and can be extended in rumor detectors while improving their performance.

Quantum Interference and Coherent Population Trapping in a Double Quantum Dot

Quantum interference is a natural consequence of wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics, and is widely observed at the atomic scale. One interesting manifestation of quantum interference is coherent population trapping (CPT), first proposed in three-level driven atomic systems and observed in quantum optical experiments. Here, we demonstrate CPT in a gate-defined semiconductor double quantum dot (DQD), with some unique twists as compared to the atomic systems. Specifically, we observe CPT in both driven and non-driven situations. We further show that CPT in a driven DQD could be used to generate adiabatic state transfer. Moreover, our experiment reveals a non-trivial modulation to the CPT caused by the longitudinal driving field, yielding an odd-even effect and a tunable CPT.

Gate-Tunable Spin-Orbit Coupling in a Germanium Hole Double Quantum Dot

Hole spins confined in semiconductor quantum dot systems have gained considerable interest for their strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) and relatively weak hyperfine interactions. Here we experimentally demonstrate a tunable SOI in a double quantum dot in a Germanium (Ge) hut wire (HW), which could help enable fast all-electric spin manipulations while suppressing unwanted decoherence. Specifically, we measure the transport spectra in the Pauli spin blockade regime in the double quantum dot device.By adjusting the interdot tunnel coupling, we obtain an electric field tuned spin-orbit length lso = 2.0 - 48.9 nm. This tunability of the SOI could pave the way toward the realization of high-fidelity qubits in Ge HW systems.

Accurate Virus Identification with Interpretable Raman Signatures by Machine Learning

Rapid identification of newly emerging or circulating viruses is an important first step toward managing the public health response to potential outbreaks. A portable virus capture device coupled with label-free Raman Spectroscopy holds the promise of fast detection by rapidly obtaining the Raman signature of a virus followed by a machine learning approach applied to recognize the virus based on its Raman spectrum, which is used as a fingerprint. We present such a machine learning approach for analyzing Raman spectra of human and avian viruses. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier specifically designed for spectral data achieves very high accuracy for a variety of virus type or subtype identification tasks. In particular, it achieves 99% accuracy for classifying influenza virus type A vs. type B, 96% accuracy for classifying four subtypes of influenza A, 95% accuracy for differentiating enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, and 99% accuracy for differentiating avian coronavirus (infectious bronchitis virus, IBV) from other avian viruses. Furthermore, interpretation of neural net responses in the trained CNN model using a full-gradient algorithm highlights Raman spectral ranges that are most important to virus identification. By correlating ML-selected salient Raman ranges with the signature ranges of known biomolecules and chemical functional groups (for example, amide, amino acid, carboxylic acid), we verify that our ML model effectively recognizes the Raman signatures of proteins, lipids and other vital functional groups present in different viruses and uses a weighted combination of these signatures to identify viruses.

Symmetry energy effects on the properties of hybrid stars

Symmetry energy is an important part of the equation of state of isospin asymmetry matter. However, the huge uncertainties of symmetry energy remain at suprasaturation densities, where the phase transitions of strongly interacting matter and the quark matter symmetry energy are likely to be taken into account. In this work, we investigate the properties of symmetry energy by using a hybrid star with the hadron-quark phase transition. The interaction among strange quark matter (SQM) in hybrid stars is based on a 3-flavor NJL model with different vector and isovector channels, while the equation of state (EOS) of the nuclear matter is obtained by considering the ImMDI-ST interaction by varying the parameters x, y, and z. Our results indicate that the various parameters and coupling constants of the interactions from the ImMDI-ST and NJL model can lead to widely different trends for the symmetry energy in the hadron-quark mixed phase and the different onsets of the hadron-quark phase transition. In addition, it has been found that the radii and tidal deformabilities of hybrid stars constrain mostly the density dependence of symmetry energy while the observed maximum masses of hybrid stars constrain mostly the EOS of symmetric nuclear and quark matter.

Ultrafast coherent control of a hole spin qubit in a germanium quantum dot

Operation speed and coherence time are two core measures for the viability of a qubit. Strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and relatively weak hyperfine interaction make holes in germanium (Ge) intriguing candidates for spin qubits with rapid, all-electrical coherent control. Here we report ultrafast single-spin manipulation in a hole-based double quantum dot in a germanium hut wire (GHW). Mediated by the strong SOI, a Rabi frequency exceeding 540 MHz is observed at a magnetic field of 100 mT, setting a record for ultrafast spin qubit control in semiconductor systems. We demonstrate that the strong SOI of heavy holes (HHs) in our GHW, characterized by a very short spin-orbit length of 1.5 nm, enables the rapid gate operations we accomplish. Our results demonstrate the potential of ultrafast coherent control of hole spin qubits to meet the requirement of DiVincenzo's criteria for a scalable quantum information processor.

Deep Probabilistic Graph Matching

Most previous learning-based graph matching algorithms solve the \textit{quadratic assignment problem} (QAP) by dropping one or more of the matching constraints and adopting a relaxed assignment solver to obtain sub-optimal correspondences. Such relaxation may actually weaken the original graph matching problem, and in turn hurt the matching performance. In this paper we propose a deep learning-based graph matching framework that works for the original QAP without compromising on the matching constraints. In particular, we design an affinity-assignment prediction network to jointly learn the pairwise affinity and estimate the node assignments, and we then develop a differentiable solver inspired by the probabilistic perspective of the pairwise affinities. Aiming to obtain better matching results, the probabilistic solver refines the estimated assignments in an iterative manner to impose both discrete and one-to-one matching constraints. The proposed method is evaluated on three popularly tested benchmarks (Pascal VOC, Willow Object and SPair-71k), and it outperforms all previous state-of-the-arts on all benchmarks.

GLAN: A Graph-based Linear Assignment Network

Differentiable solvers for the linear assignment problem (LAP) have attracted much research attention in recent years, which are usually embedded into learning frameworks as components. However, previous algorithms, with or without learning strategies, usually suffer from the degradation of the optimality with the increment of the problem size. In this paper, we propose a learnable linear assignment solver based on deep graph networks. Specifically, we first transform the cost matrix to a bipartite graph and convert the assignment task to the problem of selecting reliable edges from the constructed graph. Subsequently, a deep graph network is developed to aggregate and update the features of nodes and edges. Finally, the network predicts a label for each edge that indicates the assignment relationship. The experimental results on a synthetic dataset reveal that our method outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and achieves consistently high accuracy with the increment of the problem size. Furthermore, we also embed the proposed solver, in comparison with state-of-the-art baseline solvers, into a popular multi-object tracking (MOT) framework to train the tracker in an end-to-end manner. The experimental results on MOT benchmarks illustrate that the proposed LAP solver improves the tracker by the largest margin.

Joint Graph Learning and Matching for Semantic Feature Correspondence

In recent years, powered by the learned discriminative representation via graph neural network (GNN) models, deep graph matching methods have made great progresses in the task of matching semantic features. However, these methods usually rely on heuristically generated graph patterns, which may introduce unreliable relationships to hurt the matching performance. In this paper, we propose a joint \emph{graph learning and matching} network, named GLAM, to explore reliable graph structures for boosting graph matching. GLAM adopts a pure attention-based framework for both graph learning and graph matching. Specifically, it employs two types of attention mechanisms, self-attention and cross-attention for the task. The self-attention discovers the relationships between features and to further update feature representations over the learnt structures; and the cross-attention computes cross-graph correlations between the two feature sets to be matched for feature reconstruction. Moreover, the final matching solution is directly derived from the output of the cross-attention layer, without employing a specific matching decision module. The proposed method is evaluated on three popular visual matching benchmarks (Pascal VOC, Willow Object and SPair-71k), and it outperforms previous state-of-the-art graph matching methods by significant margins on all benchmarks. Furthermore, the graph patterns learnt by our model are validated to be able to remarkably enhance previous deep graph matching methods by replacing their handcrafted graph structures with the learnt ones.

Trends on 3d Transition Metal Coordination on Monolayer MoS$_2$

Two-dimensional materials (2DM) have attracted much interest due to their distinct optical, electronic, and catalytic properties. These properties can be by tuned a range of methods including substitutional doping or, as recently demonstrated, by surface functionalization with single atoms, increasing even further 2DM portfolio. Here we theoretically and experimentally describe the coordination reaction between MoS$_2$ monolayers with 3d transition metals (TMs), exploring the nature and the trend of MoS$_2$-TMs interaction. Density Functional Theory calculations, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Photoluminescence (PL) point to the formation of MoS$_2$-TM coordination complexes, where the adsorption energy trend for 3d TM resembles the crystal-field (CF) stabilization energy for weak-field complexes. Pearson's theory for hard-soft acid-base and Ligand-field theory were applied to discuss the periodic trends on 3d TM coordination on the MoS$_2$ surface. We found that softer acids with higher ligand field stabilization energy, such as Ni$^{2+}$, tend to form bonds with more covalent character with MoS$_2$, which can be considered a soft base. On the other hand, harder acids, such as Cr$^{3+}$, tend to form bonds with more ionic character. Additionally, we studied the trends in charge transfer and doping observed in the XPS and PL results, where metals such as Ni led to an n-type of doping, while Cu functionalization results in p-type doping. Therefore, the formation of coordination complexes on TMD's surface is demonstrated to be a promising and effective way to control and to understand the nature of the single-atom functionalization of TMD.

Elliptic flow splittings in the Polyakov-looped Nambu-Jona Lasinio transport model

To incorporate the effect of gluons on the evolution dynamics of the quark matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, we extend the 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) transport model to include the contribution from the Polyakov loops. Imbedding the resulting pNJL partonic transport model in an extended multiphase transport (extended AMPT) model, we then study the elliptic flow splittings between particles and their antiparticles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-BES energies. We find that a weak quark vector interaction in the partonic phase is able to describe the elliptic flow splitting between protons and antiprotons in heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ to 39 GeV. Knowledge on the quark vector interaction is useful for understanding the equation of state of quark matter at large baryon chemical potentials and thus the location of the critical point in the QCD phase diagram.

Measurement of undulator section wakefield at the SXFEL test facility

In free electron laser facilities, almost every kind of device will generate wakefield when an electron beam passes through it. Most of the wakefields are undesired and have a negative effect on the electron beam, which means a decrease of FEL performance. As for the SXFEL test facility, the sophisticated layout and the cumulative effect of such a long undulator section lead to an obvious wakefield, which is strong enough that can not be ignored. Based on two deflecting cavities at the entrance and the exit of the undulator section with corresponding profile monitors, we measured the wakefield of the undulator section. In this paper, we give the theoretical and simulation results of resistive wall wakefields which agree well with each other. In addition, the experimental and the simulation results of the overall undulator wakefield are given showing small difference. In order to explore the impact of this wakefield on FEL lasing, we give the simulation results of FEL with and without wakefield for comparison. There is almost no impact on 44 nm FEL in stage-1 of cascaded EEHG-HGHG mode, while the impact on 8.8 nm FEL in stage-2 becomes critical decreasing the pulse energy and peak power by 42% and 27% and broadening the bandwidth.

Room temperature coherent manipulation of single-spin qubits in silicon carbide with a high readout contrast

Spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) with mature wafer-scale fabrication and micro/nano-processing technologies have recently drawn considerable attention. Although room temperature single-spin manipulation of colour centres in SiC has been demonstrated, the typically detected contrast is less than 2%, and the photon count rate is also low. Here, we present the coherent manipulation of single divacancy spins in 4H-SiC with a high readout contrast (-30%) and a high photon count rate (150 kilo counts per second) under ambient conditions, which are competitive with the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond. Coupling between a single defect spin and a nearby nuclear spin is also observed. We further provide a theoretical explanation for the high readout contrast by analysing the defect levels and decay paths. Since the high readout contrast is of utmost importance in many applications of quantum technologies, this work might open a new territory for SiC-based quantum devices with many advanced properties of the host material.
