Anisotropic g-Factor and Spin-Orbit Field in a Ge Hut Wire Double Quantum Dot

Holes in nanowires have drawn significant attention in recent years because of the strong spin-orbit interaction, which plays an important role in constructing Majorana zero modes and manipulating spin-orbit qubits. Here, from the strongly anisotropic leakage current in the spin blockade regime for a double dot, we extract the full g-tensor and find that the spin-orbit field is in plane with an azimuthal angle of 59° to the axis of the nanowire. The direction of the spin-orbit field indicates a strong spin-orbit interaction along the nanowire, which may have originated from the interface inversion asymmetry in Ge hut wires. We also demonstrate two different spin relaxation mechanisms for the holes in the Ge hut wire double dot: spin-flip cotunneling to the leads, and spin-orbit interaction within the double dot. These results help establish feasibility of a Ge-based quantum processor.

GM-MLIC: Graph Matching based Multi-Label Image Classification

Multi-Label Image Classification (MLIC) aims to predict a set of labels that present in an image. The key to deal with such problem is to mine the associations between image contents and labels, and further obtain the correct assignments between images and their labels. In this paper, we treat each image as a bag of instances, and reformulate the task of MLIC as an instance-label matching selection problem. To model such problem, we propose a novel deep learning framework named Graph Matching based Multi-Label Image Classification (GM-MLIC), where Graph Matching (GM) scheme is introduced owing to its excellent capability of excavating the instance and label relationship. Specifically, we first construct an instance spatial graph and a label semantic graph respectively, and then incorporate them into a constructed assignment graph by connecting each instance to all labels. Subsequently, the graph network block is adopted to aggregate and update all nodes and edges state on the assignment graph to form structured representations for each instance and label. Our network finally derives a prediction score for each instance-label correspondence and optimizes such correspondence with a weighted cross-entropy loss. Extensive experiments conducted on various image datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method.

Graphical Models for Financial Time Series and Portfolio Selection

We examine a variety of graphical models to construct optimal portfolios. Graphical models such as PCA-KMeans, autoencoders, dynamic clustering, and structural learning can capture the time varying patterns in the covariance matrix and allow the creation of an optimal and robust portfolio. We compared the resulting portfolios from the different models with baseline methods. In many cases our graphical strategies generated steadily increasing returns with low risk and outgrew the S&P 500 index. This work suggests that graphical models can effectively learn the temporal dependencies in time series data and are proved useful in asset management.

Isospin effect on baryon and charge fluctuations from the pNJL model

We have studied the possible isospin corrections on the skewness and kurtosis of net-baryon and net-charge fluctuations in the isospin asymmetric matter formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-BES energies, based on a 3-flavor polyakov-looped Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. With typical scalar-isovector and vector-isovector couplings leading to the splitting of $u$ and $d$ quark chiral phase transition boundaries and critical points, we have observed dramatic isospin effects on the susceptibilities, especially those of net-charge fluctuations. Reliable experimental measurements at even lower collision energies are encouraged to confirm the observed isospin effects.

Theory, preparation, properties and catalysis application in 2D Graphynes-Based Materials

Carbon has three hybridization forms of sp-, sp2- and sp3-, and the combination of different forms can obtain different kinds of carbon allotropes, such as diamond, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, graphynes (GYs) and graphdiyne (GDY). Among them, the GDY molecule is a single-layer two-dimensional (2D) planar structure material with highly -conjugation formed by sp- and sp2- hybridization. GDY has a carbon atom ring composed of benzene ring and acetylene, which makes GDY have a uniformly distributed pore structure. In addition, GDY planar material have some slight wrinkles, which makes GDY have better self-stability than other 2D planar materials. The excellent properties of GDY make it attract the attention of researcher. Therefore, GDY is widely used in chemical catalysis, electronics, communications, clean energy and composite materials. This paper summarizes the recent progress of GDY research, including structure, preparation, properties and application of GDY in the field of catalysts.

Dipole coupling of a tunable hole double quantum dot in germanium hut wire to a microwave resonator

The germanium (Ge) hut wire system has strong spin-orbit coupling, a long coherence time due to a very large heavy-light hole splitting, and the advantage of site-controlled large-scale hut wire positioning. These properties make the Ge hut wire a promising candidate for the realization of strong coupling of spin to superconducting resonators and scalability for multiple qubit coupling. We have coupled a reflection line resonator to a hole double quantum dot (DQD) formed in Ge hut wire. The amplitude and phase responses of the microwave resonator revealed that the charge stability diagrams of the DQD are in good agreement with those obtained from transport measurements. The DQD interdot tunneling rate is shown to be tunable from 6.2 GHz to 8.5 GHz, which demonstrates the ability to adjust the frequency detuning between the qubit and the resonator. Furthermore, we achieved a hole-resonator coupling strength of up to 15 MHz, with a charge qubit decoherence rate of 0.28 GHz. Meanwhile the hole spin-resonator coupling rate was estimated to be 3 MHz. These results suggest that holes of a DQD in a Ge hut wire are dipole coupled to microwave photons, potentially enabling tunable hole spin-photon interactions in Ge with an inherent spin-orbit coupling.

Improving mobility of silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor devices for quantum dots by high vacuum activation annealing

To improve mobility of fabricated silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) quantum devices, forming gas annealing is a common method used to mitigate the effects of disorder at the Si/SiO2 interface. However, the importance of activation annealing is usually ignored. Here, we show that a high vacuum environment for implantation activation is beneficial for improving mobility compared to nitrogen atmosphere. Low-temperature transport measurements of Hall bars show that peak mobility can be improved by a factor of two, reaching 1.5 m^2/(Vs) using high vacuum annealing during implantation activation. Moreover, the charge stability diagram of a single quantum dot is mapped, with no visible disturbance caused by disorder, suggesting possibility of fabricating high-quality quantum dots on commercial wafers. Our results may provide valuable insights into device optimization in silicon-based quantum computing.

Hole spin in tunable Ge hut wire double quantum dot

Holes in germanium (Ge) exhibit strong spin-orbit interaction, which can be exploited for fast and all-electrical manipulation of spin states. Here, we report transport experiments in a tunable Ge hut wire hole double quantum dot. We observe the signatures of Pauli spin blockade (PSB) with a large singlet-triplet energy splitting of ~1.1 meV and extract the g factor. By analyzing the the PSB leakage current, we obtain a spin-orbit length l_so of ~ 40-100 nm. Furthermore, we demonstrate the electric dipole spin resonance. These results lay a solid foundation for implementing high quality tunable hole spin-orbit qubits.

Coherent control of nitrogen-vacancy center spins in silicon carbide at room temperature

Solid-state color centers with manipulatable spin qubits and telecom-ranged fluorescence are ideal platforms for quantum communications and distributed quantum computations. In this work, we coherently control the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spins in silicon carbide at room temperature, in which telecom-wavelength emission is detected. We increase the NV concentration six-fold through optimization of implantation conditions. Hence, coherent control of NV center spins is achieved at room temperature and the coherence time T2 can be reached to around 17.1 μs. Furthermore, investigation of fluorescence properties of single NV centers shows that they are room temperature photostable single photon sources at telecom range. Taking advantages of technologically mature materials, the experiment demonstrates that the NV centers in silicon carbide are promising platforms for large-scale integrated quantum photonics and long-distance quantum networks.

A cow structural model for video analytics of cow health

In livestock farming, animal health directly influences productivity. For dairy cows, many health conditions can be evaluated by trained observers based on visual appearance and movement. However, to manually evaluate every cow in a commercial farm is expensive and impractical. This paper introduces a video-analytic system which automatically detects the cow structure from captured video sequences. A side-view cow structural model is designed to describe the spatial positions of the joints (keypoints) of the cow, and we develop a system using deep learning to automatically extract the structural model from videos. The proposed detection system can detect multiple cows in the same frame and provide robust performance under practical challenges like obstacles (fences) and poor illumination. Compared to other object detection methods, this system provides better detection results and successfully isolates the keypoints of each cow even when they are close to each other.

Properties of strange quark stars with isovector interactions

We study the properties of strange quark stars by employing a 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with both scalar-isovector and vector-isovector interactions. Using the constraint on the vector-isoscalar interaction strength obtained from the elliptic flow splitting between particles and their antiparticles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, we investigate the dependence of the properties of strange quark stars on the vector-isovector and the scalar-isovector interactions, and compare the results with the state-of-art astrophysical constraints on the compact star radius and mass as well as its tidal deformability from the GW170817 event. Results from our study reinforce the prospect of using both heavy-ion collisions and astrophysical observations to provide constraints on the isovector coupling strength in quark matter and thus the quark matter equation of state as well as the QCD phase structure at finite isospin chemical potentials.

Isospin splitting of pion elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Based on the framework of an extended multiphase transport model with mean-field potentials in both the partonic phase and the hadronic phase, we explain the elliptic flow difference between $π^+$ and $π^-$ in the beam-energy scan program at the relativistic heavy-ion collider by incorporating the vector-isovector potential for quarks and antiquarks with different isospins. It is found that the isospin splitting of pion elliptic flow favors a strong vector-isovector interaction, and thus serves as a probe of the quark matter equation of state as well as the QCD phase structure at finite baryon and isospin chemical potentials.

A characteristics for a surface sum of two handlebodies along an annulus or a once-punctured torus to be a handlebody

The main results of the paper is that we give a characteristics for an annulus sum and a once-punctured torus sum of two handlebodies to be a handlebody as follows: 1. The annulus sum $H=H_1\cup_A H_2$ of two handlebodies $H_1$ and $H_2$ is a handlebody if and only if the core curve of $A$ is a longitude for either $H_1$ or $H_2$. 2. Let $H=H_1\cup_T H_2$ be a surface sum of two handlebodies $H_1$ and $H_2$ along a once-punctured torus $T$. Suppose that $T$ is incompressible in both $H_1$ and $H_2$. Then $H$ is a handlebody if and only if the there exists a collection $\{δ, σ\}$ of simple closed curves on $T$ such that either $\{δ, σ\}$ is primitive in $H_1$ or $H_2$, or $\{δ\}$ is primitive in $H_1$ and $\{σ\}$ is primitive in $H_2$.

Multitasking with Alexa Multitasking with Alexa: How Using Intelligent Personal Assistants Impacts Language-based Primary Task Performance

Intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) are supposed to help us multitask. Yet the impact of IPA use on multitasking is not clearly quantified, particularly in situations where primary tasks are also language based. Using a dual task paradigm, our study observes how IPA interactions impact two different types of writing primary tasks; copying and generating content. We found writing tasks that involve content generation, which are more cognitively demanding and share more of the resources needed for IPA use, are significantly more disrupted by IPA interaction than less demanding tasks such as copying content. We discuss how theories of cognitive resources, including multiple resource theory and working memory, explain these results. We also outline the need for future work how interruption length and relevance may impact primary task performance as well as the need to identify effects of interruption timing in user and IPA led interruptions.

Dark-Exciton-Mediated Fano Resonance from a Single Gold Nanostructure Deposited on Monolayer WS2 at Room Temperature

Strong spatial confinement and highly reduced dielectric screening provide monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with strong many-body effects, thereby possessing optically forbidden excitonic states (i.e., dark excitons) at room temperature. Herein, we explore the interaction of surface plasmons with dark excitons in hybrid systems consisting of stacked gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) and monolayer WS2. We observe a narrow Fano resonance when the hybrid system is surrounded by water, and we attribute the narrowing of the spectral Fano linewidth to the plasmon-enhanced decay of dark K-K excitons. Our results reveal that dark excitons in monolayer WS2 can strongly modify Fano resonances in hybrid plasmon-exciton systems and can be harnessed for novel optical sensors and active nanophotonic devices.

On-demand generation of shallow silicon vacancy in silicon carbide

Defects in silicon carbide have been explored as promising spin systems in quantum technologies. However, for practical quantum metrology and quantum communication, it is critical to achieve the on-demand shallow spin-defect generation. In this work, we present the generation and characterization of shallow silicon vacancies in silicon carbide by using different implanted ions and annealing conditions. The conversion efficiency of silicon vacancy of helium ions is shown to be higher than that by carbon and hydrogen ions in a wide implanted fluence range. Furthermore, after optimizing annealing conditions, the conversion efficiency can be increased more than 2 times. Due to the high density of the generated ensemble defects, the sensitivity to sense a static magnetic field can be research as high as , which is about 15 times higher than previous results. By carefully optimizing implanted conditions, we further show that a single silicon vacancy array can be generated with about 80 % conversion efficiency, which reaches the highest conversion yield in solid state systems. The results pave the way for using on-demand generated shallow silicon vacancy for quantum information processing and quantum photonics.

Directed flow in an extended multiphase transport model

We have studied the rapidity-odd directed flow in $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions in the beam energy range from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 39 GeV within the framework of an extended multiphase transport model with both partonic and hadronic mean-field potentials incorporated. Effects of the partonic scatterings, mean-field potentials, hadronization, and hadronic evolution on the directed flow are investigated, and it is found that the final directed flow is mostly sensitive to the partonic scatterings and the hadronization mechanism. Our study shows that a negative slope of the proton directed flow does not necessarily need the equation of state with a first-order phase transition.

Tunable Resonance Coupling in Single Si Nanoparticle-Monolayer WS2 Structures

Two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are extremely attractive materials for optoelectronic applications in the visible and near-IR range. Here, we address for the first time to the best of our knowledge the issue of resonance coupling in hybrid exciton-polariton structures based on single Si nanoparticles coupled to monolayer WS2. We predict a transition from weak to strong coupling regime , with a Rabi splitting energy exceeding 200 meV for a Si nanoparticle covered by monolayer WS 2 at the magnetic optical Mie resonance. This large transition is achieved due to the symmetry of magnetic dipole Mie mode and by changing the surrounding dielectric material from air to water. The prediction is based on the experimental estimation of TMDC dipole moment variation obtained from measured photoluminescence (PL) spectra of WS2 monolayers in different solvents. An ability of such a system to tune the resonance coupling is realized experimentally for optically resonant spherical Si nanoparticles placed on a WS2 monolayer. The Rabi splitting energy obtained for this scenario increases from 49.6 meV to 86.6 meV after replacing air by water. Our findings pave the way to develop high-efficiency optoelectronic, nanophotonic and quantum optical devices.
