Operator splitting for partial differential equations with Burgers nonlinearity

We provide a new analytical approach to operator splitting for equations of the type $u_t=Au+u u_x$ where $A$ is a linear differential operator such that the equation is well-posed. Particular examples include the viscous Burgers' equation, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the Benney-Lin equation, and the Kawahara equation. We show that the Strang splitting method converges with the expected rate if the initial data are sufficiently regular. In particular, for the KdV equation we obtain second-order convergence in $H^r$ for initial data in $H^{r+5}$ with arbitrary $r\ge 1$.

Operator splitting for two-dimensional incompressible fluid equations

We analyze splitting algorithms for a class of two-dimensional fluid equations, which includes the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Our main result is that the Godunov and Strang splitting methods converge with the expected rates provided the initial data are sufficiently regular.

Lipschitz metric for the Camassa-Holm equation on the line

We study stability of solutions of the Cauchy problem on the line for the Camassa-Holm equation $u_t-u_{xxt}+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0$ with initial data $u_0$. In particular, we derive a new Lipschitz metric $d_\D$ with the property that for two solutions $u$ and $v$ of the equation we have $d_\D(u(t),v(t))\le e^{Ct} d_\D(u_0,v_0)$. The relationship between this metric and the usual norms in $H^1$ and $L^\infty$ is clarified. The method extends to the generalized hyperelastic-rod equation $u_t-u_{xxt}+f(u)_x-f(u)_{xxx}+(g(u)+\frac12 f"(u)(u_x)^2)_x=0$ (for $f$ without inflection points).

The Damped String Problem Revisited

We revisit the damped string equation on a compact interval with a variety of boundary conditions and derive an infinite sequence of trace formulas associated with it, employing methods familiar from supersymmetric quantum mechanics. We also derive completeness and Riesz basis results (with parentheses) for the associated root functions under less smoothness assumptions on the coefficients than usual, using operator theoretic methods (rather than detailed eigenvalue and root function asymptotics) only.

$L^\infty$ solutions for a model of polytropic gas flow with diffusive entropy

We establish the global existence of $L^\infty$ solutions for a model of polytropic gas flow with diffusive entropy. The result is obtained by showing the convergence of a class of finite difference schemes, which includes the Lax-Friedrichs and Godunov schemes. Such convergence is achieved by proving the estimates required for the application of the compensated compactness theory.

Lipschitz metric for the periodic Camassa-Holm equation

We study stability of conservative solutions of the Cauchy problem for the periodic Camassa-Holm equation $u_t-u_{xxt}+κu_x+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0$ with initial data $u_0$. In particular, we derive a new Lipschitz metric $d_\D$ with the property that for two solutions $u$ and $v$ of the equation we have $d_\D(u(t),v(t))\le e^{Ct} d_\D(u_0,v_0)$. The relationship between this metric and usual norms in $H^1_{\rm per}$ and $L^\infty_{\rm per}$ is clarified.

The Kolmogorov-Riesz compactness theorem

We show that the Arzela-Ascoli theorem and Kolmogorov compactness theorem both are consequences of a simple lemma on compactness in metric spaces. Their relation to Helly's theorem is discussed. The paper contains a detailed discussion on the historical background of the Kolmogorov compactness theorem.

Global semigroup of conservative solutions of the nonlinear variational wave equation

We prove the existence of a global semigroup for conservative solutions of the nonlinear variational wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0$. We allow for initial data $u|_{t=0}$ and $u_t|_{t=0}$ that contain measures. We assume that $0<κ^{-1}\le c(u) \le κ$. Solutions of this equation may experience concentration of the energy density $(u_t^2+c(u)^2u_x^2)dx$ into sets of measure zero. The solution is constructed by introducing new variables related to the characteristics, whereby singularities in the energy density become manageable. Furthermore, we prove that the energy may only focus on a set of times of zero measure or at points where $c'(u)$ vanishes. A new numerical method to construct conservative solutions is provided and illustrated on examples.

Operator splitting for the KdV equation

We provide a new analytical approach to operator splitting for equations of the type $u_t=Au+B(u)$ where $A$ is a linear operator and $B$ is quadratic. A particular example is the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation $u_t-u u_x+u_{xxx}=0$. We show that the Godunov and Strang splitting methods converge with the expected rates if the initial data are sufficiently regular.

Lipschitz metric for the Hunter-Saxton equation

We study stability of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Hunter-Saxton equation $u_t+uu_x=\frac14(\int_{-\infty}^xu_x^2 dx-\int_{x}^\infty u_x^2 dx)$ with initial data $u_0$. In particular, we derive a new Lipschitz metric $d_\D$ with the property that for two solutions $u$ and $v$ of the equation we have $d_\D(u(t),v(t))\le e^{Ct} d_\D(u_0,v_0)$.

Symmetric waves are traveling waves

We show that horizontally symmetric water waves are traveling waves. The result is valid for the Euler equations, and is based on a general principle that applies to a large class of nonlinear partial differential equations, including some of the most famous model equations for water waves. A detailed analysis is given for weak solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. In addition, we establish the existence of nonsymmetric linear rotational waves for the Euler equations.

The Ablowitz-Ladik Hierarchy Revisited

We provide a detailed recursive construction of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) hierarchy and its zero-curvature formalism. The two-coefficient AL hierarchy under investigation can be considered a complexified version of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation and its hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations. Specifically, we discuss in detail the stationary Ablowitz-Ladik formalism in connection with the underlying hyperelliptic curve and the stationary Baker-Akhiezer function and separately the corresponding time-dependent Ablowitz-Ladik formalism.

Local Conservation Laws and the Hamiltonian Formalism for the Ablowitz-Ladik Hierarchy

We derive a systematic and recursive approach to local conservation laws and the Hamiltonian formalism for the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) hierarchy. Our methods rely on a recursive approach to the AL hierarchy using Laurent polynomials and on asymptotic expansions of the Green's function of the AL Lax operator, a five-diagonal finite difference operator.

The Algebro-Geometric Toda Hierarchy Initial Value Problem for Complex-Valued Initial Data

We discuss the algebro-geometric initial value problem for the Toda hierarchy with complex-valued initial data and prove unique solvability globally in time for a set of initial (Dirichlet divisor) data of full measure. To this effect we develop a new algorithm for constructing stationary complex-valued algebro-geometric solutions of the Toda hierarchy, which is of independent interest as it solves the inverse algebro-geometric spectral problem for generally non-self-adjoint Jacobi operators, starting from a suitably chosen set of initial divisors of full measure. Combined with an appropriate first-order system of differential equations with respect to time (a substitute for the well-known Dubrovin equations), this yields the construction of global algebro-geometric solutions of the time-dependent Toda hierarchy. The inherent non-self-adjointness of the underlying Lax (i.e., Jacobi) operator associated with complex-valued coefficients for the Toda hierarchy poses a variety of difficulties that, to the best of our knowledge, are successfully overcome here for the first time. Our approach is not confined to the Toda hierarchy but applies generally to 1+1-dimensional completely integrable (discrete and continuous) soliton equations.
