Mapping ultrafast timing jitter in dispersion-managed 89 GHz frequency microcombs via self-heterodyne linear interferometry

Laser frequency microcombs provide equidistant coherent frequency markers over a broad spectrum, enabling new frontiers in chip-scale frequency metrology, laser spectroscopy, dense optical communications, precision distance metrology and astronomy. Here we demonstrate thermally stabilized frequency microcomb formation in dispersion-managed microresonators at the different mode-locking states featured with the negligible center frequency shift and broad frequency bandwidth. Subsequently, femtosecond timing jitter in the microcombs are characterized, supported by precision metrology on the timing phase, relative intensity noise and instantaneous linewidth. We contrast the fundamental noise for a range of 89 GHz microcomb states, from soliton crystals to multiple solitons and single-soliton regimes, determined by pump-resonance detuning. For the single-soliton state, we report a close-to-shot-noise-limited relative intensity noise of -153.2 dB/Hz and a quantum-noise-limited timing jitter power spectral density of 0.4 as2/Hz, at 100 kHz offset frequency. This is enabled by a self-heterodyne linear interferometer with 94.2 zs/Hz1/2 timing resolution, 50.6 mHz/Hz1/2 RF frequency resolution, and 6.7 uV/Hz frequency discrimination sensitivity. We achieve an integrated timing jitter at 1.7 fs, integrated from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. Measuring and understanding the fundamental noise parameters in these high-clock-rate frequency microcombs are essential to advance soliton physics and precision microwave-optical clockwork.

Quantum light sources with configurable lifetime leveraging parity-time symmetry

Quantum light sources with configurable photon lifetimes are essential for large-scale quantum circuits, enabling applications in programmable quantum computing, various quantum key distribution protocols, and quantum tomography techniques. However, the fundamental trade-off between efficiency and photon lifetime imposes significant challenges on the design of high-performance large configurable lifetime quantum light sources. Here, we report on such chip-scale quantum light sources by harnessing the unique feature of parity-time (PT) symmetry. The core design centers on employing PT-symmetric coupling between two microresonators of distinct circumferences, enabling broad-range and selective tuning of intracavity photon density of states. By controlling the alignment between resonators, we achieved a 38-fold photon lifetime tuning range (4 ~ 158 ps), with the shortest lifetimes near the exceptional points of the PT-symmetric systems. The device generates energy-time entangled photon pairs with 87.1 +- 1.1% interference visibility and a heralded second-order autocorrelation of g_h^((2) ) (0)= 0.069 +- 0.001. Our work highlights the potential of PT symmetry for advanced quantum applications, including high-speed communication and programmable quantum computing, quantum coherent tomography, and beyond.

Atom graph, partial Boolean algebra and quantum contextuality

Partial Boolean algebra underlies the quantum logic as an important tool for quantum contextuality. We propose the notion atom graphs to reveal the graph structure of partial Boolean algebra for finite dimensional quantum systems by proving that (i) the partial Boolean algebras for quantum systems are determined by their atom graphs; (ii) the states on atom graphs can be extended uniquely to the partial Boolean algebras, and (iii) each exclusivity graph is an induced graph of an atom graph. (i) and (ii) show that the finite dimensional quantum systems are uniquely determined by their atom graphs. which proves the reasonability of graphs as the models of quantum experiments. (iii) establishes a connection between atom graphs and exclusivity graphs, and introduces a method to express the exclusivity experiments more precisely. We also present a general and parametric description for Kochen-Specker theorem based on graphs, which gives a type of non-contextuality inequality for KS contextuality.

Deep learning in motion deblurring: current status, benchmarks and future prospects

Motion deblurring is one of the fundamental problems of computer vision and has received continuous attention. The variability in blur, both within and across images, imposes limitations on non-blind deblurring techniques that rely on estimating the blur kernel. As a response, blind motion deblurring has emerged, aiming to restore clear and detailed images without prior knowledge of the blur type, fueled by the advancements in deep learning methodologies. Despite strides in this field, a comprehensive synthesis of recent progress in deep learning-based blind motion deblurring is notably absent. This paper fills that gap by providing an exhaustive overview of the role of deep learning in blind motion deblurring, encompassing datasets, evaluation metrics, and methods developed over the last six years. Specifically, we first introduce the types of motion blur and the fundamental principles of deblurring. Next, we outline the shortcomings of traditional non-blind deblurring algorithms, emphasizing the advantages of employing deep learning techniques for deblurring tasks. Following this, we categorize and summarize existing blind motion deblurring methods based on different backbone networks, including convolutional neural networks, generative adversarial networks, recurrent neural networks, and Transformer networks. Subsequently, we elaborate not only on the fundamental principles of these different categories but also provide a comprehensive summary and comparison of their advantages and limitations. Qualitative and quantitative experimental results conducted on four widely used datasets further compare the performance of SOTA methods. Finally, an analysis of present challenges and future pathways. All collected models, benchmark datasets, source code links, and codes for evaluation have been made publicly available at https://github.com/VisionVerse/Blind-Motion-Deblurring-Survey

Generalized Design of Basket Trials with P-value Combination Test

The oncology exploratory basket trial design with pruning and pooling (P&P) approach has gained increasing popularity in recent years for its simplicity and efficiency. This method was proposed based on binary endpoint, limiting its wider application. This short communication proposed a generalized framework of using P-value combination test to implement pruning and pooling process in basket trials. Only P-values of any type of statistical testing from each cohort are needed for decision making, which provides great flexibility for basket trial designs with P&P approach.

Graph structure of quantum mechanics

The quantum mechanics is proved to admit no hidden-variable in 1960s, which means the quantum systems are contextual. Revealing the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics is a significant task. We develop the approach of partial Boolean algebra to characterize the contextuality theory with local consistency and exclusivity, and then prove that the finite dimensional quantum systems are determined by atoms using two graph structure theorems. We also generalize our work to infinite dimensional cases. Our conclusions indicate that the quantum mechanics is a graph-structured combination of multiple hidden-variable theories, and provide a precise mathematical framework for quantum contextuality.

SGS-SLAM: Semantic Gaussian Splatting For Neural Dense SLAM

We present SGS-SLAM, the first semantic visual SLAM system based on Gaussian Splatting. It incorporates appearance, geometry, and semantic features through multi-channel optimization, addressing the oversmoothing limitations of neural implicit SLAM systems in high-quality rendering, scene understanding, and object-level geometry. We introduce a unique semantic feature loss that effectively compensates for the shortcomings of traditional depth and color losses in object optimization. Through a semantic-guided keyframe selection strategy, we prevent erroneous reconstructions caused by cumulative errors. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SGS-SLAM delivers state-of-the-art performance in camera pose estimation, map reconstruction, precise semantic segmentation, and object-level geometric accuracy, while ensuring real-time rendering capabilities.

Multi-scale Frequency Enhancement Network for Blind Image Deblurring

Image deblurring is an essential image preprocessing technique, aiming to recover clear and detailed images form blurry ones. However, existing algorithms often fail to effectively integrate multi-scale feature extraction with frequency enhancement, limiting their ability to reconstruct fine textures. Additionally, non-uniform blur in images also restricts the effectiveness of image restoration. To address these issues, we propose a multi-scale frequency enhancement network (MFENet) for blind image deblurring. To capture the multi-scale spatial and channel information of blurred images, we introduce a multi-scale feature extraction module (MS-FE) based on depthwise separable convolutions, which provides rich target features for deblurring. We propose a frequency enhanced blur perception module (FEBP) that employs wavelet transforms to extract high-frequency details and utilizes multi-strip pooling to perceive non-uniform blur, combining multi-scale information with frequency enhancement to improve the restoration of image texture details. Experimental results on the GoPro and HIDE datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior deblurring performance in both visual quality and objective evaluation metrics. Furthermore, in downstream object detection tasks, the proposed blind image deblurring algorithm significantly improves detection accuracy, further validating its effectiveness androbustness in the field of image deblurring.

SS3DM: Benchmarking Street-View Surface Reconstruction with a Synthetic 3D Mesh Dataset

Reconstructing accurate 3D surfaces for street-view scenarios is crucial for applications such as digital entertainment and autonomous driving simulation. However, existing street-view datasets, including KITTI, Waymo, and nuScenes, only offer noisy LiDAR points as ground-truth data for geometric evaluation of reconstructed surfaces. These geometric ground-truths often lack the necessary precision to evaluate surface positions and do not provide data for assessing surface normals. To overcome these challenges, we introduce the SS3DM dataset, comprising precise \textbf{S}ynthetic \textbf{S}treet-view \textbf{3D} \textbf{M}esh models exported from the CARLA simulator. These mesh models facilitate accurate position evaluation and include normal vectors for evaluating surface normal. To simulate the input data in realistic driving scenarios for 3D reconstruction, we virtually drive a vehicle equipped with six RGB cameras and five LiDAR sensors in diverse outdoor scenes. Leveraging this dataset, we establish a benchmark for state-of-the-art surface reconstruction methods, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the associated challenges. BOP2-TE: Bayesian Optimal Phase 2 Design for Jointly Monitoring Efficacy and Toxicity with Application to Dose Optimization

We propose a Bayesian optimal phase 2 design for jointly monitoring efficacy and toxicity, referred to as BOP2-TE, to improve the operating characteristics of the BOP2 design proposed by Zhou et al. (2017). BOP2-TE utilizes a Dirichlet-multinomial model to jointly model the distribution of toxicity and efficacy endpoints, making go/no-go decisions based on the posterior probability of toxicity and futility. In comparison to the original BOP2 and other existing designs, BOP2-TE offers the advantage of providing rigorous type I error control in cases where the treatment is toxic and futile, effective but toxic, or safe but futile, while optimizing power when the treatment is effective and safe. As a result, BOP2-TE enhances trial safety and efficacy. We also explore the incorporation of BOP2-TE into multiple-dose randomized trials for dose optimization, and consider a seamless design that integrates phase I dose finding with phase II randomized dose optimization. BOP2-TE is user-friendly, as its decision boundary can be determined prior to the trial's onset. Simulations demonstrate that BOP2-TE possesses desirable operating characteristics. We have developed a user-friendly web application as part of the BOP2 app, which is freely available at www.trialdesign.org.

Intuitionistic Quantum Logic Perspective: Static and Dynamic Revision Operators

The classical belief revision framework, as proposed by Alchourron, Gardenfors, and Makinson, involves the revision of a theory based on eight postulates. In this paper, we focus on the exploration of a revision theory grounded in quantum mechanics, referred to as the natural revision theory. There are two reasoning modes in quantum systems: static intuitionistic reasoning, which incorporates contextuality, and dynamic reasoning, which is achieved through projection measurement. We combine the advantages of two intuitionistic quantum logic frameworks, as proposed by D{ö}ring and Coecke, respectively. Our goal is to establish a truth-value assignment for intuitionistic quantum logic that not only aligns with the inherent characteristics of quantum mechanics but also supports truth-value reasoning. The natural revision theory is then investigated based on this approach. We introduce two types of revision operators that correspond to the two reasoning modes in quantum systems: static and dynamic revision. Furthermore, we highlight the distinctions between these two operators. Shifting away from classical revision paradigms, we consider the revision of consequence relations in intuitionistic quantum logic. We demonstrate how, within the natural revision theory framework, both revision operators collectively influence the consequence relations. Notably, the outcomes of revision process are impacted by the sequence in which these interweaved operators are deployed.

Fast and accurate extraction of ultra-high quality factor from cavity ring-down measurement

Cavity ring-down is an essential test to measure ultra-high quality factor (UHQ) optical cavities, which is, however, frequently misinterpreted due to lacking of a specified analysis guideline. Here we clarify the basic property of cavity ring down and present a step-by-step method that enables extraction of the overall quality factor, as well as the intrinsic loss and coupling state of UHQ cavities with better fidelity and simplicity than prior schemes. Our work can facilitate acurrate design and characterization of UHQ cavities for ultra-low noise lasers, high finesse reference cavities, and ultra-narrow optical filters.

An Evidential-enhanced Tri-Branch Consistency Learning Method for Semi-supervised Medical Image Segmentation

Semi-supervised segmentation presents a promising approach for large-scale medical image analysis, effectively reducing annotation burdens while achieving comparable performance. This methodology holds substantial potential for streamlining the segmentation process and enhancing its feasibility within clinical settings for translational investigations. While cross-supervised training, based on distinct co-training sub-networks, has become a prevalent paradigm for this task, addressing critical issues such as predication disagreement and label-noise suppression requires further attention and progress in cross-supervised training. In this paper, we introduce an Evidential Tri-Branch Consistency learning framework (ETC-Net) for semi-supervised medical image segmentation. ETC-Net employs three branches: an evidential conservative branch, an evidential progressive branch, and an evidential fusion branch. The first two branches exhibit complementary characteristics, allowing them to address prediction diversity and enhance training stability. We also integrate uncertainty estimation from the evidential learning into cross-supervised training, mitigating the negative impact of erroneous supervision signals. Additionally, the evidential fusion branch capitalizes on the complementary attributes of the first two branches and leverages an evidence-based Dempster-Shafer fusion strategy, supervised by more reliable and accurate pseudo-labels of unlabeled data. Extensive experiments conducted on LA, Pancreas-CT, and ACDC datasets demonstrate that ETC-Net surpasses other state-of-the-art methods for semi-supervised segmentation. The code will be made available in the near future at https://github.com/Medsemiseg.

MoD-SLAM: Monocular Dense Mapping for Unbounded 3D Scene Reconstruction

Monocular SLAM has received a lot of attention due to its simple RGB inputs and the lifting of complex sensor constraints. However, existing monocular SLAM systems are designed for bounded scenes, restricting the applicability of SLAM systems. To address this limitation, we propose MoD-SLAM, the first monocular NeRF-based dense mapping method that allows 3D reconstruction in real-time in unbounded scenes. Specifically, we introduce a Gaussian-based unbounded scene representation approach to solve the challenge of mapping scenes without boundaries. This strategy is essential to extend the SLAM application. Moreover, a depth estimation module in the front-end is designed to extract accurate priori depth values to supervise mapping and tracking processes. By introducing a robust depth loss term into the tracking process, our SLAM system achieves more precise pose estimation in large-scale scenes. Our experiments on two standard datasets show that MoD-SLAM achieves competitive performance, improving the accuracy of the 3D reconstruction and localization by up to 30% and 15% respectively compared with existing state-of-the-art monocular SLAM systems.

Simulation Studies for the First Pathfinder of the CATCH Space Mission

The Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission is an intelligent constellation consisting of 126 micro-satellites in three types (A, B, and C), designed for X-ray observation with the objective of studying the dynamic universe. Currently, we are actively developing the first Pathfinder (CATCH-1) for the CATCH mission, specifically for type-A satellites. CATCH-1 is equipped with Micro Pore Optics (MPO) and a 4-pixel Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) array. To assess its scientific performance, including the effective area of the optical system, on-orbit background, and telescope sensitivity, we employ the Monte Carlo software Geant4 for simulation in this study. The MPO optics exhibit an effective area of $41$ cm$^2$ at the focal spot for 1 keV X-rays, while the entire telescope system achieves an effective area of $29$ cm$^2$ at 1 keV when taking into account the SDD detector's detection efficiency. The primary contribution to the background is found to be from the Cosmic X-ray Background. Assuming a 625 km orbit with an inclination of $29^\circ$, the total background for CATCH-1 is estimated to be $8.13\times10^{-2}$ counts s$^{-1}$ in the energy range of 0.5--4 keV. Based on the background within the central detector and assuming a Crab-like source spectrum, the estimated ideal sensitivity could achieve $1.9\times10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for an exposure of 10$^4$ s in the energy band of 0.5--4 keV. Furthermore, after simulating the background caused by low-energy charged particles near the geomagnetic equator, we have determined that there is no need to install a magnetic deflector.

Towards Few-shot Out-of-Distribution Detection

Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is critical for ensuring the reliability of open-world intelligent systems. Despite the notable advancements in existing OOD detection methodologies, our study identifies a significant performance drop under the scarcity of training samples. In this context, we introduce a novel few-shot OOD detection benchmark, carefully constructed to address this gap. Our empirical analysis reveals the superiority of ParameterEfficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) strategies, such as visual prompt tuning and visual adapter tuning, over conventional techniques, including fully fine-tuning and linear probing tuning in the few-shot OOD detection task. Recognizing some crucial information from the pre-trained model, which is pivotal for OOD detection, may be lost during the fine-tuning process, we propose a method termed DomainSpecific and General Knowledge Fusion (DSGF). This approach is designed to be compatible with diverse fine-tuning frameworks. Our experiments show that the integration of DSGF significantly enhances the few-shot OOD detection capabilities across various methods and fine-tuning methodologies, including fully fine-tuning, visual adapter tuning, and visual prompt tuning. The code will be released.

You Do Not Need Additional Priors in Camouflage Object Detection

Camouflage object detection (COD) poses a significant challenge due to the high resemblance between camouflaged objects and their surroundings. Although current deep learning methods have made significant progress in detecting camouflaged objects, many of them heavily rely on additional prior information. However, acquiring such additional prior information is both expensive and impractical in real-world scenarios. Therefore, there is a need to develop a network for camouflage object detection that does not depend on additional priors. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive feature aggregation method that effectively combines multi-layer feature information to generate guidance information. In contrast to previous approaches that rely on edge or ranking priors, our method directly leverages information extracted from image features to guide model training. Through extensive experimental results, we demonstrate that our proposed method achieves comparable or superior performance when compared to state-of-the-art approaches.
