Pseudo-Developing Maps for Ideal Triangulations I: Essential Edges and Generalised Hyperbolic Gluing Equations

Let N be a topologically finite, orientable 3-manifold with ideal triangulation. We show that if there is a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations, then all edges in the triangulation are essential. This result is extended to a generalisation of the hyperbolic gluing equations, which enables the construction of hyperbolic cone-manifold structures on N with singular locus contained in the 1-skeleton of the triangulation.

Incompressible surfaces in handlebodies and boundary reducible 3-manifolds

We study the existence of incompressible embeddings of surfaces into the genus two handlebody. We show that for every compact surface with boundary, orientable or not, there is an incompressible embedding of the surface into the genus two handlebody. In the orientable case the embedding can be either separating or non-separating. We also consider the case in which the genus two handlebody is replaced by an orientable 3-manifold with a compressible boundary component of genus greater than or equal to two.

Veering triangulations admit strict angle structures

Agol recently introduced the concept of a veering taut triangulation, which is a taut triangulation with some extra combinatorial structure. We define the weaker notion of a "veering triangulation" and use it to show that all veering triangulations admit strict angle structures. We also answer a question of Agol, giving an example of a veering taut triangulation that is not layered.

Detection of incompressible surfaces in hyperbolic punctured torus bundles

Culler and Shalen, and later Yoshida, give ways to construct incompressible surfaces in 3-manifolds from ideal points of the character and deformation varieties, respectively. We work in the case of hyperbolic punctured torus bundles, for which the incompressible surfaces were classified by Floyd and Hatcher. We convert non fiber incompressible surfaces from their form to the form output by Yoshida's construction, and run his construction backwards to give (for non semi-fibers, which we identify) the data needed to construct ideal points of the deformation variety corresponding to those surfaces via Yoshida's construction. We use a result of Tillmann to show that the same incompressible surfaces can be obtained from an ideal point of the character variety via the Culler-Shalen construction. In particular this shows that all boundary slopes of non fiber and non semi-fiber incompressible surfaces in hyperbolic punctured torus bundles are strongly detected.

On spun-normal and twisted squares surfaces

Given a 3 manifold M with torus boundary and an ideal triangulation, Yoshida and Tillmann give different methods to construct surfaces embedded in M from ideal points of the deformation variety. Yoshida builds a surface from twisted squares whereas Tillmann produces a spun-normal surface. We investigate the relation between the generated surfaces and extend a result of Tillmann's (that if the ideal point of the deformation variety corresponds to an ideal point of the character variety then the generated spun-normal surface is detected by the character variety) to the generated twisted squares surfaces.
