Single-Bubble Sonoluminescence as Dicke Superradiance at Finite Temperature

Sonoluminescence is a process in which a strong sound field is used to produce light in liquids. We explain sonoluminescence as a phase transition from ordinary fluorescence to a superradiant phase. We consider a spin-boson model composed of a single bosonic mode and an ensemble of $N$ identical two-level atoms. We assume that the whole system is in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$. We show that, in a ultrastrong-coupling regime, between the two-level atoms and the electromagnetic field it is possible to have a cooperative interaction of the molecules of the gas in the interior of the bubble with the field, generating sonoluminescence.

Quadrupolar gravitational fields described by the $q-$metric

We investigate the Zipoy-Voorhees metric ($q-$metric) as the simplest static, axially symmetric solution of Einstein's vacuum field equations that possesses as independent parameters the mass and the quadrupole moment. In accordance with the black holes uniqueness theorems, the presence of the quadrupole completely changes the geometric properties of the corresponding spacetime that turns out to contain naked singularities for all possible values of the quadrupole parameter. The naked singularities, however, can be covered by interior solutions that correspond to perfect fluid sources with no specific equations of state. We conclude that the $q-$metric can be used to describe the entire spacetime generated by static deformed compact objects.

Equatorial circular orbits of neutral test particles in the Kerr--Newman spacetime

We present a detailed analysis of the orbital circular motion of electrically neutral test particles on the equatorial plane of the Kerr-Newman spacetime. Many details of the motion in the cases of black hole and naked singularity sources are pointed out. We identify four different types of orbital regions, which depend on the properties of the orbital angular momentum, and define four different kinds of naked singularities, according to the values of the charge-to-mass ratio of the source. It is shown that the presence of a particular type of counter-rotating test particles is sufficient to uniquely identify naked singularities. It is pointed out that the structure of the stability regions can be used to differentiate between black holes and naked singularities.

Geometrothermodynamics of higher dimensional black holes

We study the thermodynamics and geometrothermodynamics of different black hole configurations in more than four spacetime dimensions. We find the conditions under which second order phase transitions occur in higher-dimensional static Reissner-Nordström and stationary Kerr black holes. Our results indicate that the equilibrium manifold of all these black hole configurations is in general curved and that curvature singularities appear exactly at those places where second order phase transitions occur.

On charged boson stars

We study static, spherically symmetric, self-gravitating systems minimally coupled to a scalar field with U(1) gauge symmetry: charged boson stars. We find numerical solutions to the EinsteinMaxwell equations coupled to the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is shown that bound stable configurations exist only for values of the coupling constant less than or equal to a certain critical value. The metric coefficients and the relevant physical quantities such as the total mass and charge, turn out to be in general bound functions of the radial coordinate, reaching their maximum values at a critical value of the scalar field at the origin. We discuss the stability problem both from the quantitative and qualitative point of view. Taking properly into account the electromagnetic contribution to the total mass, the stability issue is faced also following an indication of the binding energy per particle, verifying then the existence of configurations having positive binding energy: objects apparently bound can be unstable against small perturbations, in full analogy with what observed in the mass-radius relation of neutron stars.

On the ensemble dependence in black hole geometrothermodynamics

We investigate the dependence of thermodynamic properties of black holes on the choice of statistical ensemble for a particular class of Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with cosmological constant. We use partial Legendre transformations in the thermodynamic limit in order to compare the results in different ensembles, and show that the phase transition structure depend on the choice of thermodynamic potential. This result implies that thermodynamic metrics which are partially Legendre invariant cannot be employed to describe black hole thermodynamics, and partly explains why a particular thermodynamic metric has been used so far in the framework of black hole geometrothermodynamics.

Cosmographic study of the universe's specific heat: A landscape for Cosmology?

We propose a method for constructing the specific heat for the universe by following standard definitions of classical thermodynamics, in a spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic spacetime. We use cosmography to represent the specific heat in terms of measurable quantities, and show that a negative specific heat at constant volume and a zero specific heat at constant pressure are compatible with observational data. We derive the most general cosmological model which is compatible with the values obtained for the specific heat of the universe, and show that it overcomes the fine-tuning and the coincidence problems of the $Λ$CDM model.

The conformal metric structure of Geometrothermodynamics

We present a thorough analysis on the invariance of the most widely used metrics in the Geometrothermodynamics (GTD) programme. We centre our attention in the invariance of the curvature of the space of equilibrium states under a change of fundamental representation. Assuming that the systems under consideration can be described by a fundamental relation which is a homogeneous function of a definite order, we demonstrate that such invariance is only compatible with total Legendre transformations in the present form of the programme. We give the explicit form of a metric which is invariant under total Legendre transformations and whose induced metric produces a curvature which is independent of the fundamental representation. Finally, we study a generic system with two degrees of freedom and whose fundamental relation is homogeneous of order one.

Cosmological implications of Geometrothermodynamics

We use the formalism of Geometrothermodynamics to derive a series of fundamental equations for thermodynamic systems. It is shown that all these fundamental equations can be used in the context of relativistic cosmology to derive diverse scenarios which include the standard cosmological model, a unified model for dark energy and dark matter, and an effective inflationary model.

Conformastatic disk-haloes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity

We present a relativistic model describing a thin disk surrounded by a halo in presence of an electromagnetic field. The model is obtained by solving the Einstein-Maxwell equations on a particular conformastatic spacetime background and by using the distributional approach for the energy-momentum tensor. A class of solutions is obtained in which the gravitational and electromagnetic potentials are completely determined by a harmonic function only. A particular solution is given that is asymptotically flat and singularity-free, and satisfies all the energy conditions.

Constraints from Cosmography in various parameterizations

We use cosmography to present constraints on the kinematics of the Universe without postulating any underlying theoretical model a priori. To this end, we use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to perform comparisons to the supernova Ia union 2 compilation, combined with the Hubble Space Telescope measurements of the Hubble constant, and the Hubble parameter datasets. The cosmographic approach to our analysis is revisited and extended for new notions of redshift presented as alternatives to the redshift z. Furthermore, we introduce a new set of fitting parameters describing the kinematical evolution of the Universe in terms of the equation of state of the Universe and derivatives of the total pressure. Our results are consistent with the ΛCDM model, although alternative models, with nearly constant pressure and no cosmological constant, match the results accurately as well.

Geometric description of chemical reactions

We use the formalism of Geometrothermodynamics to describe chemical reactions in the context of equilibrium thermodynamics. Any chemical reaction in a closed system is shown to be described by a geodesic in a $2-$dimensional manifold that can be interpreted as the equilibrium space of the reaction. We first show this in the particular cases of a reaction with only two species corresponding to either two ideal gases or two van der Waals gases. We then consider the case of a reaction with an arbitrary number of species. The initial equilibrium state of the geodesic is determined by the initial conditions of the reaction. The final equilibrium state, which follows from a thermodynamic analysis of the reaction, is shown to correspond to a coordinate singularity of the thermodynamic metric which describes the equilibrium manifold.

Cosmography and constraints on the equation of state of the Universe in various parametrizations

We use cosmography to present constraints on the kinematics of the Universe, without postulating any underlying theoretical model. To this end, we use a Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis to perform comparisons to the supernova Ia Union 2 compilation, combined with the Hubble Space Telescope measurements of the Hubble constant, and the Hubble parameter datasets. We introduce a sixth order cosmographic parameter and show that it does not enlarge considerably the posterior distribution when comparing to the fifth order results. We also propose a way to construct viable parameter variables to be used as alternatives of the redshift $z$. These can overcome both the problems of divergence and lack of accuracy associated with the use of $z$. Moreover, we show that it is possible to improve the numerical fits by re-parameterizing the cosmological distances. In addition, we constrain the equation of state of the Universe as a whole by the use of cosmography. Thus, we derive expressions which can be directly used to fit the equation of state and the pressure derivatives up to fourth order. To this end, it is necessary to depart from a pure cosmographic analysis and to assume the Friedmann equations as valid. All our results are consistent with the $Λ$CDM model, although alternative fluid models, with nearly constant pressure and no cosmological constant, match the results accurately as well.

Gravitational field of compact objects in general relativity

We study some exact and approximate solutions of Einstein's equations that can be used to describe the gravitational field of astrophysical compact objects in the limiting case of slow rotation and slight deformation. First, we show that none of the standard models obtained by using Fock's method can be used as an interior source for the approximate exterior Kerr solution. We then use Fock's method to derive a generalized interior solution, and also an exterior solution that turns out to be equivalent to the exterior Hartle-Thorne approximate solution that, in turn, is equivalent to an approximate limiting case of the exact Quevedo-Mashhoon solution. As a result we obtain an analytic approximate solution that describes the interior and exterior gravitational field of a slowly rotating and slightly deformed astrophysical object.

Extending the generalized Chaplygin gas model by using geometrothermodynamics

We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD) to derive fundamental thermodynamic equations that are used to construct general relativistic cosmological models. In particular, we show that the simplest possible fundamental equation, which corresponds in GTD to a system with no internal thermodynamic interaction, describes the different fluids of the standard model of cosmology. In addition, a particular fundamental equation with internal thermodynamic interaction is shown to generate a new cosmological model that correctly describes the dark sector of the Universe and contains as a special case the generalized Chaplygin gas model.

Topological quantization of the free massive bosonic field

We present a topological quantization of free massive bosonic fields as the first example of a classical field theory with a quantum counterpart to be studied under this formalism. First, we identify certain harmonic map as a geometric representation of this physical system. We take as a concrete example the case of free massive bosonic fields in two dimensions represented by the minimal embedding of a two dimensional surface into a pp-wave spacetime. We use this geometric representation to construct the fiber bundle corresponding to some specific field configurations and then find their topological spectra, defined in terms of the Euler invariant. We discuss the results for some particular configurations and their consequences for the energy of the system.

A geometric approach to the thermodynamics of the van der Waals system

We investigate the geometric properties of the equilibrium manifold of a thermodynamic system determined by the van der Waals equations of state. We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to obtain results that are invariant under Legendre transformations, i. e., independent of the choice of thermodynamic potential. It is shown that the equilibrium manifold is curved with curvature singularities situated at those points where first order phase transitions occur. Moreover, the geodesic equations in the equilibrium manifold are investigated numerically to illustrate the equivalence between geodesic incompleteness and curvature singularities as a criterion to define phase transitions in an invariant manner.

Matching conditions in relativistic astrophysics

We present an exact electrovacuum solution of Einstein-Maxwell equations with infinite sets of multipole moments which can be used to describe the exterior gravitational field of a rotating charged mass distribution. We show that in the special case of a slowly rotating and slightly deformed body, the exterior solution can be matched to an interior solution belonging to the Hartle-Thorne family of approximate solutions. To search for exact interior solutions, we propose to use the derivatives of the curvature eigenvalues to formulate a $C^3-$matching condition from which the minimum radius can be derived at which the matching of interior and exterior spacetimes can be carried out. We prove the validity of the $C^3-$matching in the particular case of a static mass with a quadrupole moment. The corresponding interior solution is obtained numerically and the matching with the exterior solution gives as a result the minimum radius of the mass configuration.
