Geometrothermodynamics of five dimensional black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-theory

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of 5D static and spherically symmetric black holes in (i) Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory, (ii) Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory with negative cosmological constant, and in (iii) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet theory. To formulate the thermodynamics of these black holes we use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy relation and, alternatively, a modified entropy formula which follows from the first law of thermodynamics of black holes. The results of both approaches are not equivalent. Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics, we introduce in the manifold of equilibrium states a Legendre invariant metric for each black hole and for each thermodynamic approach, and show that the thermodynamic curvature diverges at those points where the temperature vanishes and the heat capacity diverges.

Multipolar Solutions

A class of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations is presented which contains infinite sets of gravitoelectric, gravitomagnetic and electromagnetic multipole moments. The multipolar structure of the solutions indicates that they can be used to describe the exterior gravitational field of an arbitrarily rotating mass distribution endowed with an electromagnetic field. The presence of gravitational multipoles completely changes the structure of the spacetime because of the appearance of naked singularities in a confined spatial region. The possibility of covering this region with interior solutions is analyzed in the case of a particular solution with quadrupole moment.

Holographic dark matter and dark energy with second order invariants

One of the main goals of modern cosmology remains to summon up a self consistent policy, able to explain, in the framework of the Einstein's theory, the cosmic speed up and the presence of Dark Matter in the Universe. Accordingly to the Holographic principle, which postulates the existence of a minimal size of a physical region, we argue, in this paper, that if this size exists for the Universe and it is accrued from the independent geometrical second order invariants, it would be possible to ensure a surprising source for Dark Matter and a viable candidate for explaining the late acceleration of the Universe. Along the work, we develop low redshift tests, such as Supernovae Ia and kinematical analysis complied by the use of Cosmography and we compare the outcomes with higher redshift tests, such as CMB peak and anisotropy of the cosmic power spectrum. All the results indicate that the models presented here can be interpreted as unified models that are capable to describe both the dark matter and the dark energy.

Fundamentals of Geometrothermodynamics

We present the basic mathematical elements of geometrothermodynamics which is a formalism developed to describe in an invariant way the thermodynamic properties of a given thermodynamic system in terms of geometric structures. First, in order to represent the first law of thermodynamics and the general Legendre transformations in an invariant way, we define the phase manifold as a Legendre invariant Riemannian manifold with a contact structure. The equilibrium manifold is defined by using a harmonic map which includes the specification of the fundamental equation of the thermodynamic system. Quasi-static thermodynamic processes are shown to correspond to geodesics of the equilibrium manifold which preserve the laws of thermodynamics. We study in detail the equilibrium manifold of the ideal gas and the van der Waals gas as concrete examples of the application of geometrothermodynamics.

Topological discretization of bosonic strings

We apply the method of topological quantization to obtain the bosonic string topological spectrum propagating on a flat background. We define the classical configuration of the system, and construct the corresponding principal fiber bundle (pfb) that uniquely represents it. The topological spectrum is defined through the characteristic class of the pfb. We find explicit expressions for the topological spectrum for particular configurations of the bosonic strings on a Minkowski background and show that they lead to a discretization of the total energy of the system.

Equatorial circular motion in Kerr spacetime

We analyze the properties of circular orbits of test particles on the equatorial plane of a rotating central mass whose gravitational field is described by the Kerr spacetime. For rotating black holes and naked singularities we explore all the spatial regions where circular orbits can exist and analyze the behavior of the energy and the angular momentum of the corresponding test particles. In particular, we find all the radii at which a test particle can have zero angular momentum due to the repulsive gravity effects generated by naked singularities. We classify all the stability zones of circular orbits. It is shown that the geometric structure of the stability zones of black holes is completely different from that of naked singularities.

Reconstructing the expansion history of the Universe with a one-fluid approach

Assuming that the Universe is filled by one single fluid, we present in the context of General Relativity a possible explanation for the acceleration of the Universe. We use ordinary thermodynamics and the fact that small matter perturbations barely propagate in our Universe, to derive a general solution for a single fluid in which the speed of sound vanishes. We find a model that contains $Λ$CDM as a special case, and is compatible with current observational data.

Geometrothermodynamics in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We investigate the thermodynamic geometries of the most general static, spherically symmetric, topological black holes of the Hořava--Lifshitz gravity. In particular, we show that a Legendre invariant metric derived in the context of geometrothermodynamics for the equilibrium manifold reproduces correctly the phase transition structure of these black holes. Moreover, the limiting cases in which the mass, the entropy or the Hawking temperature vanish are also accompanied by curvature singularities which indicate the limit of applicability of the thermodynamics and the geometrothermodynamics of black holes. The Einstein limit and the case of a black hole with flat horizon are also investigated.

Thermodynamic systems as extremal hypersurfaces

We apply variational principles in the context of geometrothermodynamics. The thermodynamic phase space ${\cal T}$ and the space of equilibrium states ${\cal E}$ turn out to be described by Riemannian metrics which are invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and satisfy the differential equations following from the variation of a Nambu-Goto-like action. This implies that the volume element of ${\cal E}$ is an extremal and that ${\cal E}$ and ${\cal T}$ are related by an embedding harmonic map. We explore the physical meaning of geodesic curves in ${\cal E}$ as describing quasi-static processes that connect different equilibrium states. We present a Legendre invariant metric which is flat (curved) in the case of an ideal (van der Waals) gas and satisfies Nambu-Goto equations. The method is used to derive some new solutions which could represent particular thermodynamic systems.

Mass Quadrupole as a Source of Naked Singularities

We investigate the gravitational field of a static mass with quadrupole moment in empty space. It is shown that in general this configuration is characterized by the presence of curvature singularities without a surrounding event horizon. These naked singularities generate an effective field of repulsive gravity which, in turn, drastically changes the behavior of test particles. As a possible consequence, the accretion disk around a naked singularity presents a particular discontinuous structure.

Curvature as a Measure of the Thermodynamic Interaction

We present a systematic and consistent construction of geometrothermodynamics by using Riemannian contact geometry for the phase manifold and harmonic maps for the equilibrium manifold. We present several metrics for the phase manifold that are invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and induce thermodynamic metrics on the equilibrium manifold. We review all the known examples in which the curvature of the thermodynamic metrics can be used as a measure of the thermodynamic interaction.

Toward an invariant definition of repulsive gravity

A remarkable property of naked singularities in general relativity is their repulsive nature. The effects generated by repulsive gravity are usually investigated by analyzing the trajectories of test particles which move in the effective potential of a naked singularity. This method is, however, coordinate and observer dependent. We propose to use the properties of the Riemann tensor in order to establish in an invariant manner the regions where repulsive gravity plays a dominant role. In particular, we show that in the case of the Kerr-Newman singularity and its special subcases the method delivers plausible results.

Exterior and interior metrics with quadrupole moment

We present the Ernst potential and the line element of an exact solution of Einstein's vacuum field equations that contains as arbitrary parameters the total mass, the angular momentum, and the quadrupole moment of a rotating mass distribution. We show that in the limiting case of slowly rotating and slightly deformed configuration, there exists a coordinate transformation that relates the exact solution with the approximate Hartle solution. It is shown that this approximate solution can be smoothly matched with an interior perfect fluid solution with physically reasonable properties. This opens the possibility of considering the quadrupole moment as an additional physical degree of freedom that could be used to search for a realistic exact solution, representing both the interior and exterior gravitational field generated by a self-gravitating axisymmetric distribution of mass of perfect fluid in stationary rotation.

Circular motion in Reissner-Nordström spacetime

We study the motion of neutral test particles along circular orbits in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. We use the method of the effective potential with the constants of motion associated to the underlying Killing symmetries. A comparison between the black hole and naked singularity cases is performed. In particular we find that in the naked singularity case for $r Q^2/M$ and $1 \sqrt{5}/2$ there are all stable circular orbits for $r>Q^2/M$.

Geometrothermodynamics of black holes in two dimensions

We study the properties of two-dimensional dilatonic black holes from the viewpoint of geometrothermodynamics. We show that the thermodynamic curvature of the equilibrium space vanishes only in the case of a flat spacetime, and it reproduces correctly the behavior of the thermodynamic interaction and phase transition structure of the corresponding black hole configurations.

Generalized Kerr spacetime with an arbitrary mass quadrupole moment: geometric properties vs particle motion

An exact solution of Einstein's field equations in empty space first found in 1985 by Quevedo and Mashhoon is analyzed in detail. This solution generalizes Kerr spacetime to include the case of matter with arbitrary mass quadrupole moment and is specified by three parameters, the mass $M$, the angular momentum per unit mass $a$ and the quadrupole parameter $q$. It reduces to the Kerr spacetime in the limiting case $q=0$ and to the Erez-Rosen spacetime when the specific angular momentum $a$ vanishes. The geometrical properties of such a solution are investigated. Causality violations, directional singularities and repulsive effects occur in the region close to the source. Geodesic motion and accelerated motion are studied on the equatorial plane which, due to the reflection symmetry property of the solution, turns out to be also a geodesic plane.

Geometric description of BTZ black holes thermodynamics

We study the properties of the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in (2+1)-gravity. We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to introduce in the space of equilibrium states a $2-$dimensional thermodynamic metric whose curvature is non-vanishing, indicating the presence of thermodynamic interaction, and free of singularities, indicating the absence of phase transitions. Similar results are obtained for generalizations of the BTZ black hole which include a Chern-Simons term and a dilatonic field. Small logarithmic corrections of the entropy turn out to be represented by small corrections of the thermodynamic curvature, reinforcing the idea that thermodynamic curvature is a measure of thermodynamic interaction.

Gravitational fields as generalized string models

We show that Einstein's main equations for stationary axisymmetric fields in vacuum are equivalent to the motion equations for bosonic strings moving on a special nonflat background. This new representation is based on the analysis of generalized harmonic maps in which the metric of the target space explicitly depends on the parametrization of the base space. It is shown that this representation is valid for any gravitational field which possesses two commuting Killing vector fields. We introduce the concept of dimensional extension which allows us to consider this type of gravitational fields as strings embedded in D-dimensional nonflat backgrounds, even in the limiting case where the Killing vector fields are hypersurface orthogonal.
