Chiral symmetry restoration and eigenvalue density of Dirac operator

We reinvestigate constraints on the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator in the chiral symmetric phase of 2 flavor QCD at finite temperature, employing the overlap Dirac operator with the exact chiral symmetry at finite lattice spacings to avoid possible ultra-violet(UV) divergences. Studying multi-point correlation functions in various channels in the thermodynamical limit, we obtain stronger constraints than those found in the previous studies that not only the eigenvalue density at the origin but also its first and second derivatives vanish in the chiral limit of 2 flavor QCD. In addition we show that the axial U(1) anomaly becomes invisible in susceptibilities of scalar and pseudo scalar mesons.

The neutral pion decay and the chiral anomaly on the lattice

We perform a lattice QCD calculation of the π^0\toγγtransition form factor and the associated decay width. We use a Euclidean time integral of the relevant three-point function to compute the decay amplitude for two-photon final state, which is a non-QCD state. We use the all-to-all quark propagator technique to carry out this integral as well as to include the disconnected quark diagram contributions. We execute the calculation using the overlap fermion formulation, which ensures the exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and produces the chiral anomaly through the Jacobian of the chiral transformation. We examine various sources of systematic effects except for possible discretization effect. Our final results for the form factor and the decay width reproduce the ABJ anomaly in the chiral limit and agree with the experimental measurements at the physical pion mass with a precision of a few percent.

Two-photon decay of the neutral pion in lattice QCD

We perform non-perturbative calculation of the π^0 to γγ transition form factor and the associated decay width using lattice QCD. The amplitude for two-photon final state, which is not an eigenstate of QCD, is extracted through an Euclidean time integral of the relevant three-point function. We utilize the all-to-all quark propagator technique to carry out this integral as well as to include the disconnected quark diagram contributions. The overlap fermion formulation is employed on the lattice to ensure exact chiral symmetry on the lattice. After examining various sources of systematic effects except for possible discretization effect, we obtain Γ=7.83(31)(49) eV for the pion decay width, where the first error is statistical and the second is our estimate of the systematic error.

Interpolation between the epsilon and p regimes

We reconsider chiral perturbation theory in a finite volume and develop a new computational scheme which smoothly interpolates the conventional epsilon and p regimes. The counting rule is kept essentially the same as in the p expansion. The zero-momentum modes of Nambu-Goldstone bosons are, however, treated separately and partly integrated out to all orders as in the epsilon expansion. In this new scheme, the theory remains infra-red finite even in the chiral limit, while the chiral-logarithmic effects are kept present. We calculate the two-point function in the pseudoscalar channel and show that the correlator has a constant contribution in addition to the conventional hyperbolic cosine function of time t. This constant term rapidly disappears in the p regime but it is indispensable for a smooth convergence of the formula to the epsilon regime result. Our calculation is useful to precisely estimate the finite volume effects in lattice QCD simulations on the pion mass Mpi and kaon mass MK, as well as their decay constants Fpi and FK.

Chiral perturbation theory in a theta vacuum

We consider chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) with a non-zero theta term. Due to the CP violating term, the vacuum of chiral fields is shifted to a non-trivial element on the SU(N_f) group manifold. The CP violation also provides mixing of different CP eigenstates, between scalar and pseudoscalar, or vector and axialvector operators. We investigate upto O(theta^2) effects on the mesonic two point correlators of ChPT to the one-loop order. We also address the effects of fixing topology, by using saddle point integration in the Fourier transform with respect to theta.

Exploring chiral dynamics with overlap fermions

This talk presents a lattice study of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking performed by the JLQCD and TWQCD collaborations with dynamical overlap fermions. Our lattice configurations are generated in a fixed topological sector. Since finite volume effects, partly due to the fixed global topology, are mainly induced by pion fields, the dependence on the lattice volume, topological charge and quark masses can be analytically predicted using chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We find a good agreement of Dirac operator spectrum calculated on the lattice with the ChPT prediction including its finite size scalings, through which the chiral condensate is determined with good accuracy.

The Chiral Condensate in a Finite Volume

Chiral perturbation theory at finite four-volume V (=L^3T) is reconsidered with a view towards finding a computational scheme that can deal with any value of M_πL, where M_πis a generic Nambu-Goldstone mass. The momentum zero modes that cause the usual p-expansion to fail in the chiral limit are treated separately, and partly integrated out to all orders. In this way the theory remains infrared finite in the perturbative expansion, and the chiral limit can be considered at finite volume. We illustrate the technique by computing the quark condensate in a finite volume, smoothly connecting standard results in the p-regime for larger masses with those of the epsilon-regime for smaller masses. From the partially quenched theory we also obtain the spectral density of the Dirac operator, a smooth function from the microscopic region to the bulk region of the p-regime.

Finite-volume Correction to the Pion Decay Constant in the Epsilon-Regime

In the chiral limit of QCD, the pion decay constant F can be extracted from lattice gauge theory by means of a coupling to isospin chemical potential. Here we compute the leading correction due to finite volume in the epsilon-expansion of chiral perturbation theory. A comparison is made to recent Monte Carlo data.

Theta vacuum physics from QCD at fixed topology

We propose a method to obtain physical quantities in the theta vacuum from those at fixed topology, which are different by finite size effects. Extending the work by Brower et al., we derive the formula to estimate these finite size corrections for arbitrary correlators in terms of the topological susceptibility and the theta dependence. Applying this formula, we show that topological susceptibility can be measured through two-point functions of pseudoscalar operator.

Numerical results of two-dimensional N=(2,2) super Yang-Mills theory

We report the results of a numerical simulation of a lattice formulation of the two-dimensional N=(2,2) super Yang-Mills theory proposed by Suzuki and Taniguchi. We measure the 1-point functions and 2-point functions. The scenario is that only tuning of the scalar mass to a specific value gives a supersymmetric continuum limit. Our results are consistent with this scenario although conclusive results on the restoration of supersymmetry have not been obtained.

Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory in the epsilon-regime

We calculate meson correlators in the epsilon-regime within partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. The valence quark masses and sea quark masses can be chosen arbitrary and all non-degenerate. Taking some of the sea quark masses to infinity, one obtains a smooth connection among the theories with different number of flavors, as well as the quenched theory. These results can be directly compared with lattice QCD simulations.

Finite volume QCD at fixed topological charge

In finite volume the partition function of QCD with a given $θ$ is a sum of different topological sectors with a weight primarily determined by the topological susceptibility. If a physical observable is evaluated only in a fixed topological sector, the result deviates from the true expectation value by an amount proportional to the inverse space-time volume 1/V. Using the saddle point expansion, we derive formulas to express the correction due to the fixed topological charge in terms of a 1/V expansion. Applying this formula, we propose a class of methods to determine the topological susceptibility in QCD from various correlation functions calculated in a fixed topological sector.

The chiral limit in lattice QCD

It has been a big challenge for lattice QCD to simulate dynamical quarks near the chiral limit. Theoretically, it is well-known that the naive chiral symmetry cannot be realized on the lattice (the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem). Also practically, the computational cost rapidly grows as the quark mass is reduced. The JLQCD collaboration started a project to perform simulations with exact but modified chiral symmetry using the the overlap-Dirac operator and the topology conserving action. The latter is helpful to reduce the numerical cost of the dynamical quarks. Our simulation of two-flavor QCD has been successful to reduce the sea quark mass down to a few MeV.

Note on massless bosonic states in two-dimensional field theories

In a wide class of $G_L\times G_R$ invariant two-dimensional super-renormalizable field theories, the parity-odd part of the two-point function of global currents is completely determined by a fermion one-loop diagram. For any non-trivial fermion content, the two-point function possesses a massless pole which corresponds to massless bosonic physical states. As an application, we show that two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauge theory without a superpotential possesses $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ symmetry and contains one massless bosonic state per fixed spatial momentum. The $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theory possesses $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry, and there exist at least three massless bosonic states.

Improvement of algorithms for dynamical overlap fermions

We investigate the algorithms for dynamical overlap fermions aiming at improving the performance for large-scale simulations. We look for the best combination of Hybrid Monte Carlo options and iterative quark solvers with respect to the numerical costs. Our main target is a $N_f=2$ simulation with overlap fermion on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at lattice spacing around 0.12 fm.

Lattice QCD with fixed topology

The overlap Dirac operator, which satisfies the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, realizes exact chiral symmetry on the lattice without any unphysical doubler modes. To perform the path integrals, one should, however, note that the overlap fermion determinant has discontinuities where the topology is ill-defined, its locality is doubtful, and the numerical cost is suddenly enhanced. An interesting solution would be to concentrate on a fixed topological sector in the full configuration space. In this thesis, we test a gauge action which automatically satisfies Luescher's admissibility condition, as well as an additional (large) negative mass Wilson fermion action in the quenched study (with no light quark). Both of them would keep the topology along the HMC simulations. The quark potential and the topology stability are investigated with different lattice sizes and different couplings. The results of quenched QCD in the $ε$-regime are also presented as an example of the lattice studies with fixed topology. Remarkable quark mass and topology dependences of meson correlators allow us to determine the fundamental parameters of the effective theory, in which the exact chiral symmetry with the Ginsparg Wilson relation plays a crucial role.

Meson correlators in a finite volume near the chiral limit

We report on the results of our calculation of meson correlators in a finite volume. The calculation is carried out in the quenched approximation near the chiral limit (down to Mq = 2.6 MeV) using the overlap fermion. For these small quark masses, the scalar and pseudo-scalar correlators are well approximated with a few hundred eigenmodes. The results for both connected and disconnected correlators are compared with the theoretical predictions of quenched chiral perturbation theory.

Low-lying mode contribution to the quenched meson correlators in the epsilon-regime

We present a quenched calculation of meson correlators with the overlap fermion at very small masses 2.6--13 MeV. In this region the pion Compton wavelength is larger than our lattice size L\simeq 1.23fm and the system is in the so-called epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory. We found that the scalar and pseudo-scalar correlators are precisely approximated by a few hundred low-lying fermion eigenmodes in this regime, whereas axial-vector correlator receives significant contributions from higher eigenmodes. We also measure the disconnected pseudo-scalar correlator, which is well saturated with the low-lying modes. Matching these lattice data with the one-loop expressions for the correlators in quenched chiral perturbation theory, we evaluate the decay constant F_pi and the chiral condensate Sigma as well as the parameters m_0 and alpha, which describe the artifacts of the quenched approximation.
