Complex Replica Zeros of $\pm J$ Ising Spin Glass at Zero Temperature

Zeros of the $n$th moment of the partition function $[Z^n]$ are investigated in a vanishing temperature limit $β\to \infty$, $n \to 0$ keeping $y=βn \sim O(1)$. In this limit, the moment parameterized by $y$ characterizes the distribution of the ground-state energy. We numerically investigate the zeros for $\pm J$ Ising spin glass models with several ladder and tree systems, which can be carried out with a feasible computational cost by a symbolic operation based on the Bethe--Peierls method. For several tree systems we find that the zeros tend to approach the real axis of $y$ in the thermodynamic limit implying that the moment cannot be described by a single analytic function of $y$ as the system size tends to infinity, which may be associated with breaking of the replica symmetry. However, examination of the analytical properties of the moment function and assessment of the spin-glass susceptibility indicate that the breaking of analyticity is relevant to neither one-step or full replica symmetry breaking.

Mathematical Foundation of Quantum Annealing

Quantum annealing is a generic name of quantum algorithms to use quantum-mechanical fluctuations to search for the solution of optimization problem. It shares the basic idea with quantum adiabatic evolution studied actively in quantum computation. The present paper reviews the mathematical and theoretical foundation of quantum annealing. In particular, theorems are presented for convergence conditions of quantum annealing to the target optimal state after an infinite-time evolution following the Schroedinger or stochastic (Monte Carlo) dynamics. It is proved that the same asymptotic behavior of the control parameter guarantees convergence both for the Schroedinger dynamics and the stochastic dynamics in spite of the essential difference of these two types of dynamics. Also described are the prescriptions to reduce errors in the final approximate solution obtained after a long but finite dynamical evolution of quantum annealing. It is shown there that we can reduce errors significantly by an ingenious choice of annealing schedule (time dependence of the control parameter) without compromising computational complexity qualitatively. A review is given on the derivation of the convergence condition for classical simulated annealing from the view point of quantum adiabaticity using a classical-quantum mapping.

Spin Glass Identities and the Nishimori Line

For a general spin glass model with asymmetric couplings we prove a family of identities involving expectations of generalized overlaps and magnetizations in the quenched state. Those identities holds pointwise in the Nishimori line and are reached at the rate of the inverse volume while, in the general case, they can be proved in integral average.

Distribution of Lee-Yang zeros and Griffiths singularities in the $\pm J$ model of spin glasses

We investigate the distribution of zeros of the partition function of the two- and three-dimensional symmetric $\pm J$ Ising spin glasses on the complex field plane. We use the method to analytically implement the idea of numerical transfer matrix which provides us with the exact expression of the partition function as a polynomial of fugacity. The results show that zeros are distributed in a wide region in the complex field plane. Nevertheless we observe that zeros on the imaginary axis play dominant roles in the critical behaviour since zeros on the imaginary axis are in closer proximity to the real axis. We estimate the density of zeros on the imaginary axis by an importance-sampling Monte Carlo algorithm, which enables us to sample very rare events. Our result suggests that the density has an essential singularity at the origin. This observation is consistent with the existence of Griffiths singularities in the present systems. This is the first evidence for Griffiths singularities in spin glass systems in equilibrium.

Convergence of Quantum Annealing with Real-Time Schrodinger Dynamics

Convergence conditions for quantum annealing are derived for optimization problems represented by the Ising model of a general form. Quantum fluctuations are introduced as a transverse field and/or transverse ferromagnetic interactions, and the time evolution follows the real-time Schrodinger equation. It is shown that the system stays arbitrarily close to the instantaneous ground state, finally reaching the target optimal state, if the strength of quantum fluctuations decreases sufficiently slowly, in particular inversely proportionally to the power of time in the asymptotic region. This is the same condition as the other implementations of quantum annealing, quantum Monte Carlo and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, in spite of the essential difference in the type of dynamics. The method of analysis is an application of the adiabatic theorem in conjunction with an estimate of a lower bound of the energy gap based on the recently proposed idea of Somma et. al. for the analysis of classical simulated annealing using a classical-quantum correspondence.

Phase diagram of the $p$-spin-interacting spin glass with ferromagnetic bias and a transverse field in the infinite-$p$ limit

The phase diagram of the $p$-spin-interacting spin glass model in a transverse field is investigated in the limit $p \to \infty$ under the presence of ferromagnetic bias. Using the replica method and the static approximation, we show that the phase diagram consists of four phases: Quantum paramagnetic, classical paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and spin-glass phases. We also show that the static approximation is valid in the ferromagnetic phase in the limit $p \to \infty$ by using the large-$p$ expansion. Since the same approximation is already known to be valid in other phases, we conclude that the obtained phase diagram is exact.

Inequalities for the Local Energy of Random Ising Models

We derive a rigorous lower bound on the average local energy for the Ising model with quenched randomness. The result is that the lower bound is given by the average local energy calculated in the absence of all interactions other than the one under consideration. The only condition for this statement to hold is that the distribution function of the random interaction under consideration is symmetric. All other interactions can be arbitrarily distributed including non-random cases. A non-trivial fact is that any introduction of other interactions to the isolated case always leads to an increase of the average local energy, which is opposite to ferromagnetic systems where the Griffiths inequality holds. Another inequality is proved for asymmetrically distributed interactions. The probability for the thermal average of the local energy to be lower than that for the isolated case takes a maximum value on the Nishimori line as a function of the temperature. In this sense the system is most stable on the Nishimori line.

Quantum annealing of the random-field Ising model by transverse ferromagnetic interactions

We introduce transverse ferromagnetic interactions, in addition to a simple transverse field, to quantum annealing of the random-field Ising model to accelerate convergence toward the target ground state. The conventional approach using only the transverse-field term is known to be plagued by slow convergence when the true ground state has strong ferromagnetic characteristics for the random-field Ising model. The transverse ferromagnetic interactions are shown to improve the performance significantly in such cases. This conclusion is drawn from the analyses of the energy eigenvalues of instantaneous stationary states as well as by the very fast algorithm of Bethe-type mean-field annealing adopted to quantum systems. The present study highlights the importance of a flexible choice of the type of quantum fluctuations to achieve the best possible performance in quantum annealing. The existence of such flexibility is an outstanding advantage of quantum annealing over simulated annealing.

Internal Energy of the Potts model on the Triangular Lattice with Two- and Three-body Interactions

We calculate the internal energy of the Potts model on the triangular lattice with two- and three-body interactions at the transition point satisfying certain conditions for coupling constants. The method is a duality transformation. Therefore we have to make assumptions on uniqueness of the transition point and that the transition is of second order. These assumptions have been verified to hold by numerical simulations for q=2, 3 and 4, and our results for the internal energy are expected to be exact in these cases.

Convergence theorems for quantum annealing

We prove several theorems to give sufficient conditions for convergence of quantum annealing, which is a protocol to solve generic optimization problems by quantum dynamics. In particular the property of strong ergodicity is proved for the path-integral Monte Carlo implementation of quantum annealing for the transverse Ising model under a power decay of the transverse field. This result is to be compared with the much slower inverse-log decay of temperature in the conventional simulated annealing. Similar results are proved for the Green's function Monte Carlo approach. Optimization problems in continuous space of particle configurations are also discussed.

Duality in finite-dimensional spin glasses

We present an analysis leading to a conjecture on the exact location of the multicritical point in the phase diagram of spin glasses in finite dimensions. The conjecture, in satisfactory agreement with a number of numerical results, was previously derived using an ansatz emerging from duality and the replica method. In the present paper we carefully examine the ansatz and reduce it to a hypothesis on analyticity of a function appearing in the duality relation. Thus the problem is now clearer than before from a mathematical point of view: The ansatz, somewhat arbitrarily introduced previously, has now been shown to be closely related to the analyticity of a well-defined function.

Location of the Multicritical Point for the Ising Spin Glass on the Triangular and Hexagonal Lattices

A conjecture is given for the exact location of the multicritical point in the phase diagram of the +/- J Ising model on the triangular lattice. The result p_c=0.8358058 agrees well with a recent numerical estimate. From this value, it is possible to derive a comparable conjecture for the exact location of the multicritical point for the hexagonal lattice, p_c=0.9327041, again in excellent agreement with a numerical study. The method is a variant of duality transformation to relate the triangular lattice directly with its dual triangular lattice without recourse to the hexagonal lattice, in conjunction with the replica method.

Gauge Theory for Quantum Spin Glasses

The gauge theory for random spin systems is extended to quantum spin glasses to derive a number of exact and/or rigorous results. The transverse Ising model and the quantum gauge glass are shown to be gauge invariant. For these models, an identity is proved that the expectation value of the gauge invariant operator in the ferromagnetic limit is equal to the one in the classical equilibrium state on the Nishimori line. As a result, a set of inequalities for the correlation function are proved, which restrict the location of the ordered phase. It is also proved that there is no long-range order in the two-dimensional quantum gauge glass in the ground state. The phase diagram for the quantum XY Mattis model is determined.

Surface terms on the Nishimori line of the Gaussian Edwards-Anderson model

For the Edwards-Anderson model we find an integral representation for some surface terms on the Nishimori line. Among the results are expressions for the surface pressure for free and periodic boundary conditions and the adjacency pressure, i.e., the difference between the pressure of a box and the sum of the pressures of adjacent sub-boxes in which the box can been decomposed. We show that all those terms indeed behave proportionally to the surface size and prove the existence in the thermodynamic limit of the adjacency pressure.

Exact location of the multicritical point for finite-dimensional spin glasses: A conjecture

We present a conjecture on the exact location of the multicritical point in the phase diagram of spin glass models in finite dimensions. By generalizing our previous work, we combine duality and gauge symmetry for replicated random systems to derive formulas which make it possible to understand all the relevant available numerical results in a unified way. The method applies to non-self-dual lattices as well as to self dual cases, in the former case of which we derive a relation for a pair of values of multicritical points for mutually dual lattices. The examples include the +-J and Gaussian Ising spin glasses on the square, hexagonal and triangular lattices, the Potts and Z_q models with chiral randomness on these lattices, and the three-dimensional +-J Ising spin glass and the random plaquette gauge model.

Possibly Exact Solution for the Multicritical Point of Finite-Dimensional Spin Glasses

After briefly describing the present status of the spin glass theory, we present a conjecture on the exact location of the multicritical point in the phase diagram of finite-dimensional spin glasses. The theory enables us to understand in a unified way many numerical results for two-, three- and four-dimensional models including the +-J Ising model, random Potts model, random lattice gauge theory, and random Zq model. It is also suggested from the same theoretical framework that models with symmetric distribution of randomness in exchange interaction have no finite-temperature transition on the square lattice.

Error counting in a quantum error-correcting code and the ground-state energy of a spin glass

Upper and lower bounds are given for the number of equivalence classes of error patterns in the toric code for quantum memory. The results are used to derive a lower bound on the ground-state energy of the +/-J Ising spin glass model on the square lattice with symmetric and asymmetric bond distributions. This is a highly non-trivial example in which insights from quantum information lead directly to an explicit result on a physical quantity in the statistical mechanics of disordered systems.

Self-dual random-plaquette gauge model and the quantum toric code

We study the four-dimensional Z_2 random-plaquette lattice gauge theory as a model of topological quantum memory, the toric code in particular. In this model, the procedure of quantum error correction works properly in the ordered (Higgs) phase, and phase boundary between the ordered (Higgs) and disordered (confinement) phases gives the accuracy threshold of error correction. Using self-duality of the model in conjunction with the replica method, we show that this model has exactly the same mathematical structure as that of the two dimensional random-bond Ising model, which has been studied very extensively. This observation enables us to derive a conjecture on the exact location of the multicritical point (accuracy threshold) of the model, p_c=0.889972..., and leads to several nontrivial results including bounds on the accuracy threshold in three dimensions.
