Griffiths inequalities for the Gaussian spin glass

The Griffiths inequalities for Ising spin-glass models with Gaussian randomness of non-vanishing mean are proved using properties of the Gaussian distribution and gauge symmetry of the system. These inequalities imply that correlation functions are non-negative and monotonic along the Nishimori line in the phase diagram. From this result, the existence of thermodynamic limit for correlation functions and pressure is proved under free and fixed boundary conditions. Relations between the location of multicritical points are also derived for different lattices.

Exact Ground-State Energies of the Random-Field Ising Chain and Ladder

We derive the exact ground-state energy of the one-dimensional Ising model in random fields taking values h, 0 and -h with general probabilities. The random-field Ising model on a ladder is also analyzed by showing its equivalence to the random-field Ising chain with field values h, -h and 0 for h<J. The zero-temperature transger matrix is used to obtain the results.

Symmetry, complexity and multicritical point of the two-dimensional spin glass

We analyze models of spin glasses on the two-dimensional square lattice by exploiting symmetry arguments. The replicated partition functions of the Ising and related spin glasses are shown to have many remarkable symmetry properties as functions of the edge Boltzmann factors. It is shown that the applications of homogeneous and Hadamard inverses to the edge Boltzmann matrix indicate reduced complexities when the elements of the matrix satisfy certain conditions, suggesting that the system has special simplicities under such conditions. Using these duality and symmetry arguments we present a conjecture on the exact location of the multicritical point in the phase diagram.

Derivatives and inequalities for order parameters in the Ising spin glass

Identities and inequalities are proved for the order parameters, correlation functions and their derivatives of the Ising spin glass. The results serve as additional evidence that the ferromagnetic phase is composed of two regions, one with strong ferromagnetic ordering and the other with the effects of disorder dominant. The Nishimori line marks a crossover between these two regions.

Energy fluctuations at the multicritical point in two-dimensional spin glasses

We study the two-dimensional +/-J Ising model, three-state Potts model and four-state Potts model, by the numerical transfer matrix method to investigate the behaviour of the sample-to-sample fluctuations of the internal energy on the Nishimori line. The result shows a maximum at the multicritical point in all the models we investigated. The large sample-to-sample fluctuations of the internal energy as well as the existence of a singularity in these fluctuations imply that the bond configuration (or, equivalently, the distribution of frustrated plaquettes) may be experiencing a non-trivial change of its behaviour at the multicritical point. This observation is consistent with the picture that the phase transition at the multicritical point is of geometry-induced nature.

Absence of the Effects of Vortices in the Gauge Glass

We calculate several correlation functions and distribution functions of dynamical variables for the gauge glass and the Villain model using the spin wave approximation and the gauge transformation. The results show that the spin wave approximation gives the exact solutions on the Nishimori line in the phase diagram. This implies that vortices play no role in the thermodynamic behavior of the system as long as some correlation and distribution functions are concerned. These results apply to any dimensions including the two-dimensional case.

Duality and Multicritical Point of Two-Dimensional Spin Glasses

Determination of the precise location of the multicritical point and phase boundary is a target of active current research in the theory of spin glasses. In this short note we develop a duality argument to predict the location of the multicritical point and the shape of the phase boundary in models of spin glasses on the square lattice.

Complex and Non-Complex Phase Structures in Models of Spin Glasses and Information Processing

The gauge theory of spin glasses and statistical-mechanical formulation of error-correcting codes are reviewed with an emphasis on their similarities. For the gauge theory, we explain the functional identities on dynamical autocorrelation functions and on the distribution functions of order parameters. These functional identities restrict the possibilities of slow dynamics and complex structure of the phase space. An inequality for error-correcting codes is shown to be interpreted to indicate non-monotonicity of spin orientation as a function of the temperature in spin glasses.

Exact results on spin glass models

Exact and/or rigorous results are reviewed for the Ising and XY/Villain spin glasses in finite dimensions, such as the exact energy, correlation identities and a functional relation between the distribution functions of ferromagnetic and spin glass order parameters. This last relation is useful to prove that the phase space is not complex on a line in the phase diagram. The spin wave theory neglecting periodicity is shown to give exact results for the Villain model on a line in the phase diagram. Implications of this fact on the renormalization-group results for the random-phase XY/Villain model in two dimensions are discussed.

Multispin Ising spin glasses with ferromagnetic interactions

We consider the thermodynamics of an infinite-range Ising p-spin glass model with an additional r-spin ferromagnetic interaction. For r=2 there is a continuous transition to a ferromagnetic phase, while for r>2 the transition is first order. We find both glassy and non-glassy ferromagnetic phases, with replica symmetry breaking of both the one step and full varieties. We obtain new results for the case where r=p>2, demonstrating the existence of a non-glassy ferromagnetic phase, of significance to error-correcting codes.

Absence of Replica Symmetry Breaking in a Region of the Phase Diagram of the Ising Spin Glass

We prove that the distribution functions of magnetization and spin glass order parameter coincide on the Nishimori line in the phase diagram of the $\pm J$ Ising model in any dimension. This implies absence of replica symmetry breaking because the distribution function of magnetization consists only of two delta functions, suggesting the same simple structure for the distribution of spin glass order parameter. It then follows that the mixed (glassy) phase, where the ferromagnetic order coexists with complex phase space, should lie, if any, below the Nishimori line. We also argue that the AT line to mark the onset of RSB with a continous distribution of the spin glass order parameter, if any again, would start with an infinite slope from the multicritical point where paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and spin glass phases merge.

Exact Solution of the Infinite-Range Quantum Mattis Model

We have solved the quantum version of the Mattis model with infinite-range interactions. A variational approach gives the exact solution for the infinite-range system, in spite of the non-commutative nature of the quantum spin components; this implies that quantum effects are not predominant in determining the macroscopic properties of the system. Nevertheless, the model has a surprisingly rich phase behaviour, exhibiting phase diagrams with tricritical, three-phase and critical end points.

Error-correcting codes and image restoration with multiple stages of dynamics

We consider the problems of error-correcting codes and image restoration with multiple stages of dynamics. Information extracted from the former stage can be used selectively to improve the performance of the latter one. Analytic results were derived for the mean-field systems using the cavity method. We find that it has the advantage of being tolerant to uncertainties in hyperparameter estimation, as confirmed by simulations.

Quantum Annealing in the Transverse Ising Model

We introduce quantum fluctuations into the simulated annealing process of optimization problems, aiming at faster convergence to the optimal state. Quantum fluctuations cause transitions between states and thus play the same role as thermal fluctuations in the conventional approach. The idea is tested by the transverse Ising model, in which the transverse field is a function of time similar to the temperature in the conventional method. The goal is to find the ground state of the diagonal part of the Hamiltonian with high accuracy as quickly as possible. We have solved the time-dependent Schrödinger equation numerically for small size systems with various exchange interactions. Comparison with the results of the corresponding classical (thermal) method reveals that the quantum annealing leads to the ground state with much larger probability in almost all cases if we use the same annealing schedule.

Generalization ability of a perceptron with non-monotonic transfer function

We investigate the generalization ability of a perceptron with non-monotonic transfer function of a reversed-wedge type in on-line mode. This network is identical to a parity machine, a multilayer network. We consider several learning algorithms. By the perceptron algorithm the generalization error is shown to decrease by the $α^{-1/3}$-law similarly to the case of a simple perceptron in a restricted range of the parameter $a$ characterizing the non-monotonic transfer function. For other values of $a$, the perceptron algorithm leads to the state where the weight vector of the student is just opposite to that of the teacher. The Hebbian learning algorithm has a similar property; it works only in a limited range of the parameter. The conventional AdaTron algorithm does not give a vanishing generalization error for any values of $a$.We thus introduce a modified AdaTron algorithm which yields a good performance for all values of $a$. We also investigate the effects of optimization of the learning rate as well as of the learning algorithm. Both methods give excellent learning curves proportional to $α^{-1}$. The latter optimization is related to the Bayes statistics and is shown to yield useful hints to extract maximum amount of information necessary to accelerate learning processes.

Convergence of simulated annealing by the generalized transition probability

We prove weak ergodicity of the inhomogeneous Markov process generated by the generalized transition probability of Tsallis and Stariolo under power-law decay of the temperature. We thus have a mathematical foundation to conjecture convergence of simulated annealing processes with the generalized transition probability to the minimum of the cost function. An explicitly solvable example in one dimension is analyzed in which the generalized transition probability leads to a fast convergence of the cost function to the optimal value. We also investigate how far our arguments depend upon the specific form of the generalized transition probability proposed by Tsallis and Stariolo. It is shown that a few requirements on analyticity of the transition probability are sufficient to assure fast convergence in the case of the solvable model in one dimension.

A Simple Perceptron that Learns Non-Monotonic Rules

We investigate the generalization ability of a simple perceptron trained in the off-line and on-line supervised modes. Examples are extracted from the teacher who is a non-monotonic perceptron. For this system, difficulties of training can be controlled continuously by changing a parameter of the teacher. We train the student by several learning strategies in order to obtain the theoretical lower bounds of generalization errors under various conditions. Asymptotic behavior of the learning curve has been derived, which enables us to determine the most suitable learning algorithm for a given value of the parameter controlling difficulties of training.

High-Temperature Dynamics of Spin Glasses

We develop a systematic expansion method of physical quantities for the SK model and the finite-dimensional $\pm J$ model of spin glasses in non-equilibrium states. The dynamical probability distribution function is derived from the master equation using a high temperature expansion. We calculate the expectation values of physical quantities from the dynamical probability distribution function. The theoretical curves show satisfactory agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results in the appropriate temperature and time regions. A comparison is made with the results of a dynamics theory by Coolen, Laughton and Sherrington.
