Magnetic Field Dependence of the Spin Susceptibility on Conventional s-wave Superconductor LaRu$_4$P$_{12}$ Revealed by $^{31}$P-NMR and $^{139}$La-NMR

The magnetic field dependence of the spin part of Knight shift, which is proportional to the superconducting-state spin susceptibility, was investigated at two nuclear sites, $^{31}$P and $^{139}$La in a conventional s-wave superconductor LaRu$_4$P$_{12}$. After the analyses, we confirmed that the superconducting-state spin susceptibility is proportional to magnetic field, and connects to the normal-state spin susceptibility smoothly. This is a textbook example, when the superconductivity is broken with the orbital pair-breaking effect.

Magnetic Field Effect on s-wave Superconductor LaRu4P12 Studied by 31P-NMR

We have performed 31P-NMR measurements on the s-wave superconductor LaRu4P12 to investigate the magnetic field effect of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 on a conventional full-gap superconductor. With increasing magnetic field, the Hebel-Slichter peak immediately below Tc in 1=T1 was suppressed, and the magnetic field dependence of 1/T1 at 0.8 K, well below Tc, was proportional to H2. These behaviors can be fully understood by the orbital pair-breaking effect in a single-band s-wave superconductor

Large nonvolatile control of magnetic anisotropy in CoPt by a ferroelectric ZnO-based tunneling barrier

The electric control of magnetic anisotropy has important applications for nonvolatile memory and information processing. By first-principles calculations, we show a large nonvolatile control of magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic/ferroelectric CoPt/ZnO interface. Using the switched electric polarization of ZnO, the density-of-states and magnetic anisotropy at the CoPt surface show a large change. Due to a strong Co/Pt orbitals hybridization and a large spin-orbit coupling, a large control of magnetic anisotropy was found. We experimentally measured the change of effective anisotropy by tunneling resistance measurements in CoPt/Mg-doped ZnO/Co junctions. Additionally, we corroborate the origin of the control of magnetic anisotropy by observations on tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance.

Unusual Field-Insensitive Phase Transition and Kondo Behavior in SmTi$_2$Al$_{20}$

Magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed on high-quality single crystalline SmTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ (residual resistivity ratio $\sim$ 40) grown by Al self-flux method. A Kondo-like $\log T$ dependence in the resistivity is observed below 50 K. We discovered a field-insensitive phase transition at $T_{x}$ = 6.5 K and a field-insensitive heavy fermion behavior with the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ = 150 mJ/(K$^{2}$ mol). Specific heat analysis reveals that the ground state is a $Γ_{8}$ quartet state and the Sm magnetic dipole moment $m_{\rm Sm}$ ($\sim 0.5 μ_{\rm B}$ at $T \simeq$ 0) orders below $T_{x}$ in spite of the field-insensitive behavior. Possible reasons for the field insensitiveness will be discussed.

f-Electron-Nuclear Hyperfine-Coupled Multiplets in the Unconventional Charge Order Phase of Filled Skutterudite PrRu4P12

In the unconventional f-electron-associated charge order phase of filled skutterudite PrRu4P12, the low-temperature behaviors of the triplet crystalline-electric-field ground state of Pr ions have been studied by specific heat and magnetization measurements using high quality single crystals. Specific heat shows an anomalous Schottky-type peak structure at 0.30 K in zero field in spite of the absence of any symmetry breaking. Magnetization curve at 0.06 K shows a remarkable rounding below 1 T. It has been revealed that these anomalies provide compelling evidence for the formation of a lattice of Pr 4f-electron-nuclear hyperfine-coupled multiplets, the first known thermodynamical observation of its kind.

Low-lying excitations at the rare-earth site due to rattling motion in the filled skutterudite LaOs_4Sb_{12} revealed by ^{139}La NMR and ^{121/123}Sb NQR

We report experimental results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at the La site and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) at the Sb site in the filled skutterudite LaOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. We found that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ at the La site exhibits a different temperature dependence from that at the Sb site. Although $1/T_1T$ at the Sb site is explained by the Korringa mechanism, $1/T_1T$ at the La site exhibits a broad maximum around 50 K, showing the presence of an additional contribution at the La site. The additional low-lying excitations observed at the La site can be understood with the relaxation from anharmonic phonons due to the rattling motion of the La atoms.

Evidence for Point Nodes in the Superconducting Gap Function in the Filled Skutterudite Heavy-Fermion Compound PrOs4Sb12: 123Sb-NQR Study under Pressure

We report $^{123}$Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements of the filled skutterudite heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ under high pressures of 1.91 and 2.34 GPa. The temperature dependence of NQR frequency and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicate that the crystal-electric-field splitting $Δ_{\rm CEF}$ between the ground state $Γ_1$ singlet and the first excited state $Γ_4^{(2)}$ triplet decreases with increasing pressure. The 1/$T_1$ below $T_c$ = 1.55 K at $P$ = 1.91 GPa shows a power-law temperature variation and is proportional to $T^5$ at temperatures considerably below $T_c$, which indicates the existence of point nodes in the superconducting gap function. The data can be well fitted by the gap model $Δ(θ)=Δ_0\sinθ$ with $Δ_0$ = 3.08$k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$. The relation between the superconductivity and the quadrupole fluctuations associated with the $Γ_4^{(2)}$ state is discussed.

Elastic properties of the Non-Fermi liquid metal $Ce Ru_4 Sb_{12}$ and the Dense Kondo semiconductor $Ce Os_4 Sb_{12}$

We have investigated the elastic properties of the Ce-based filled skutterudite antimonides CeRu$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ by means of ultrasonic measurements. CeRu$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ shows a slight increase around 130 K in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants $C$$_{11}$, ($C$$_{11}$-$C$$_{12}$)/2 and $C$$_{44}$. No apparent softening toward low temperature due to a quadrupolar response of the 4$f$-electronic ground state of the Ce ion was observed at low temperatures. In contrast CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ shows a pronounced elastic softening toward low temperature in the longitudinal $C$$_{11}$ as a function of temperature ($T$) below about 15 K, while a slight elastic softening was observed in the transverse $C$$_{44}$ below about 1.5 K. Furthermore, CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ shows a steep decrease around a phase transition temperature of 0.9 K in both $C$$_{11}$ and$ C$$_{44}$. The elastic softening observed in $C$$_{11}$ below about 15 K cannot be explained reasonably only by the crystalline electric field effect. It is most likely to be responsible for the coupling between the elastic strain and the quasiparticle band with a small energy gap in the vicinity of Fermi level. The elastic properties and the 4$f$ ground state of Ce ions in CeRu$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ are discussed from the viewpoint of the crystalline electric field effect and the band structure in the vicinity of Fermi level.

Impurity Effect as a Probe for the Gap Function in the Filled Skutterudite Compound Superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$: Sb-NQR Study

We have carried out nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements in the filled skutterudite compounds Pr(Os$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_4$Sb$_{12}$ ($x=0.1, 0.2$), in order to gain insights into the symmetry of the superconducting gap function. Upon replacing Os with Ru, the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ becomes proportional to temperature ($T$) at low $T$ far below $T_c$, and the magnitude of $(1/T_1T)_{low-T}$ increases with increasing Ru content. These results indicate that a finite density of states is induced at the Fermi level by the impurity, and thus suggest that there exist nodes in the gap function of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$.

Sb-NQR probe for multipole degree of freedom in the first Pr-based heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$

We report $^{121,123}$Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements in the filled-skutterudite superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ in the temperature range of 0.05-30 K. The electric field gradients (EFG), $V_{zz}$ and $V_{xx}-V_{yy}$, at the Sb site exhibit unusual temperature dependence below 30 K. To explain these features, we discuss the coupling between the Sb nuclear quadrupole moment and Pr $4f^2$-derived multipole moments. The observed $T$ dependence of EFG is well explained by the CEF quasi-quartet consisted of $Γ_1$ singlet and $Γ_4^{(2)}$ triplet states in the cubic point group $T_h$. These results, in turn, are indicative of the importance of the coupling between the $^{121,123}$Sb quadrupole moments and the hexadecapole moment caused by the quasi-quartet.

Novel Phase Transition Near the Quantum Critical Point in the Filled-Skutterudite Compound CeOs4Sb12: an Sb-NQR Study

We report on a novel phase transition at $T$ = 0.9 K in the Ce-based filled-skutterudite compound CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ via measurements of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectrum of Sb nuclei. The temperature ($T$) dependence of $1/T_1$ behaves as if approaching closely an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point (QCP), following the relation $1/T_{1}\propto T/(T-T_{\rm N})^{1/2}$ with $T_{\rm N} = 0.06$ K in the range of $T=1.3-25$ K. The onset of either the spin-density-wave (SDW) or charge-density-wave (CDW) order at $T_{\rm 0} = 0.9$ K, that is, of the first order, is evidenced by a broadening of the NQR spectrum and a marked reduction in $1/T_1$ just below $T_{\rm 0}$. The $f$-electron-derived correlated band realized in CeOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ is demonstrated to give rise to the novel phase transition on the verge of AFM QCP.

Multiband superconductivity in the heavy fermion compound PrOs4Sb12

The thermal conductivity of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12 was measured down to Tc/40 throughout the vortex state. At lowest temperatures and for magnetic fields H ~ 0.07Hc2, already 40% of the normal state thermal conductivity is restored. This behaviour (similar to that observed in MgB2) is a clear signature of multiband superconductivity in this compound.

Evolution of 4f-Electron States in the Metal-Insulator Transition of PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$

Magnetic excitations of the filled skutterudite PrRu4P12 exhibiting a metal-insulator (M-I) transition at TM-I= 63 K were studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiment. The spectra at temperatures much lower than TM-I are described as well-defined crystal-field excitations. With approaching TM-I, the excitation peaks broaden and shift considerably together with the temperature variation of the carrier number and the atomic displacement in the transition. The 4f-electron state evolve from the well localized state in the insulator phase to the strongly hybridized itinerant state by p-f mixing near TM-I. The hybridization is responsible for the M-I transition of PrRu4P12.

Role of p-f Hybridization in the Metal-Non-Metal Transition of PrRu4P12

Electronic state evolution in the metal-non-metal transition of PrRu4P12 has been studied by X-ray and polarized neutron diffraction experiments. It has been revealed that, in the low-temperature non-metallic phase, two inequivalent crystal-field (CF) schemes of Pr3+ 4f^2 electrons with Gamma_1 and Gamma_4^(2) ground states are located at Pr1 and Pr2 sites forming the bcc unit cell surrounded by the smaller and larger cubic Ru-ion sublattices, respectively. This modulated electronic state can be explained by the p-f hybridization mechanism taking two intermediate states of 4f^1 and 4f^3. The p-f hybridization effect plays an important role for the electronic energy gain in the metal-non-metal transition originated from the Fermi surface nesting.

Exotic Heavy-Fermion State in Filled Skutterudite SmOs4Sb12

Specific heat and transport measurements have revealed an unconventional heavy-fermion (HF) state in SmOs4Sb12 single crystals. The electronic specific-heat coefficient (gamma=0.82 J/K^2mol) and the coefficient (A) of the quadratic temperature dependence of electrical resistivity are largely enhanced, although the ratio A/gamma^2 is reduced from the Kadowaki-Woods ratio of HF materials. Both gamma and A do not show any significant decrease in applied field in contrast with Ce-based HF compounds, suggesting an unconventional origin of the heavy quasiparticles. A weak ferromagnetic ordering sets in below about 3 K, probably originating in the itinerant quasiparticles.

Quadrupolar effect and rattling motion in heavy fermion superconductor PrOs_4Sb_{12}

The elastic properties of a filled skutterudite PrOs_4Sb_{12} with a heavy Fermion superconductivity at T_C=1.85 K have been investigated. The elastic softening of (C_{11}-C_{12})/2 and C_{44} with lowering temperature down to T_C indicates that the quadrupolar fluctuation due to the CEF state plays a role for the Cooper paring in superconducting phase of PrOs_4Sb_{12}. A Debye-type dispersion in the elastic constants around 30 K revealed a thermally activated Gamma_{23} rattling due to the off-center Pr-atom motion obeying tau=tau_{0}exp(E/k_{B}T) with an attempt time tau_0=8.8*10^{-11} sec and an activation energy E=168 K. It is remarkable that the charge fluctuation of the off-center motion with Gamma_{23} symmetry may mix with the quadrupolar fluctuation and enhance the elastic softening of (C_{11}-C_{12})/2 just above T_C.

Specific Heat Study of Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in CeNi_2Ge_2: Anomalous Peak in Quasi-Particle Density-of-States

To investigate the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior in a nonalloyed system CeNi_2Ge_2, we have measured the temperature and field dependences of the specific heat C on a CeNi_2Ge_2 single crystal. The distinctive temperature dependence of C/T (~a-b*T^(1/2)) is destroyed in almost the same manner for both field directions of B//c-axis and B//a-axis. The overall behavior of C(T,B) and the low-temperature upturn in magnetic susceptibility can be reproduced, assuming an anomalous peak of the quasi-particle-band density-of-states (DOS) at the Fermi energy possessing (epsilon)^(1/2) energy dependence. Absence of residual entropy around T=0 K in B~0 T has been confirmed by the magnetocaloric effect measurements, which are consistent with the present model. The present model can also be applied to the NFL behavior in CeCu_{5.9}Au_{0.1} using a ln(epsilon)-dependent peak in the DOS. Possible origins of the peak in the DOS are discussed.
