Randomness-induced quantum spin liquid behavior in the $s=$1/2 bond-random Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice

We investigate the zero- and finite-temperature properties of the bond-random $s=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by the exact diagonalization and the Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that the randomness induces the gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) state, the random-singlet state. Implications to recent experiments on the mixed-anion pyrochlore-lattice antiferromagnet Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_5$N$_2$ exhibiting gapless QSL behaviors are discussed.

Ripple state in the frustrated honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet

We discover a new type of multiple-$q$ state, "ripple state", in a frustrated honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet under magnetic fields. The ground state has an infinite ring-like degeneracy in the wavevector space, exhibiting a cooperative paramagnetic state, "ring-liquid" state. We elucidate that the system exhibits the ripple state as a new low-temperature thermodynamic phase via a second-order phase transition from the ring-liquid state, keeping the ring-like spin structure factor. The spin texture in real space looks like a "water ripple" and can induce a giant electric polarization vortex. Possible relationship to the honeycomb-lattice compound, ${\rm Bi_{3}Mn_{4}O_{12}(NO_{3})}$, is discussed.

Spin ordering induced by lattice distortions in classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

We theoretically investigate effects of lattice distortions on the spin ordering of classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice. In the model, local lattice distortions originating from the site vibration are taken into account to yield effective spin interactions via the spin-lattice coupling (SLC). The breathing lattice-alternation is characterized by the ratio of the nearest-neighbor interaction for large tetrahedra to that for small ones, J'/J. It is found by Monte Carlo simulations that the system exhibits a first-order transition into four different types of collinear magnetic ordered states. In the uniform case (J'/J=1), the state realized at stronger SLC is cubic-symmetric characterized by the (1/2,1/2,1/2) magnetic Bragg peaks, while the one at weaker SLC is tetragonal-symmetric characterized by the (1,1,0) ones. With increasing the breathing distortion (decreasing J'/J), the ordering pattern of the (1/2,1/2,1/2) state becomes non-cubic with its magnetic Bragg reflections almost unchanged, while the (1,1,0) state is robust. The non-cubic state peculiar to the breathing pyrochlores is further categorized into two types. We demonstrate that these two non-cubic orderings result in the massive degeneracy of the ground state and that the associated residual entropy per spin takes characteristic values of k_B ln(4)/16 and k_B ln(6)/16. Experimental implications of the results are discussed.

Randomness-induced quantum spin liquid behavior in the $s=\frac{1}{2}$ random $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice

We investigate the ground-state and the finite-temperature properties of the bond-random $s=1/2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice with frustrating nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by the exact diagonalization and the Hams--de Raedt methods. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is constructed in the randomness versus the frustration ($J_2/J_1$) plane, with the aim of clarifying the effects of randomness and frustration in stabilizing a variety of phases. We find that the randomness induces the gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like state, the random-singlet state, together with the spin-glass state in a certain range of parameter space. The spin-glass state might be stabilized by employing the lattice directional degrees of freedom associated with the stripe-type magnetic order of the regular model. Possible implications to recent experiments on the square-lattice mixed-crystal antiferromagnet Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ exhibiting the gapless QSL-like behaviors are discussed.

Nature of the high-speed rupture of the two-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes

The nature of the high-speed rupture or the main shock of the Burridge-Knopoff spring-block model in two dimensions obeying the rate-and-state dependent friction law is studied by means of extensive computer simulations. It is found that the rupture propagation in larger events is highly anisotropic and irregular in shape on longer length scales, although the model is completely uniform and the rupture-propagation velocity is kept constant everywhere at the rupture front. The manner of the rupture propagation sometimes mimics the successive ruptures of neighboring "asperities" observed in real large earthquakes. Large events tend to be unilateral, with its epicenter lying at the rim of its rupture zone. The epicenter site is also located next to the rim of the rupture zone of some past event. Event-size distributions are computed and discussed in comparison with those of the corresponding one-dimensional model. The magnitude distribution exhibits a power-law behavior resembling the Gutenberg-Richter law for smaller magnitudes, which changes over to a more characteristic behavior for larger magnitudes. The behavior of the rupture length for larger events is discussed in terms of the strongly anisotropic rupture propagation of large events reflecting the underlying geometry.

Slow-Slip Phenomena Represented by the One-Dimensional Burridge-Knopoff Model of Earthquakes

Slow-slip phenomena, including afterslips and silent earthquakes, are studied using a one-dimensional Burridge--Knopoff model that obeys the rate-and-state dependent friction law. By varying only a few model parameters, this simple model allows reproducing a variety of seismic slips within a single framework, including main shocks, precursory nucleation processes, afterslips, and silent earthquakes.

Randomness-induced quantum spin liquid behavior in the s=1/2 random J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice

We investigate the ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the bond-random $s=1/2$ Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice with frustrated nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by the exact diagonalization and the Hams--de Raedt methods. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is constructed in the randomness versus the frustration ($J_2/J_1$) plane, with the aim of clarifying the effects of randomness and frustration in stabilizing a variety of distinct phases. We find that the randomness induces the gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like state, the random-singlet state, in a wide range of parameter space. The observed robustness of the random-singlet state suggests that the gapless QSL-like behaviors might be realized in a wide class of frustrated quantum magnets possessing a certain amount of randomness or inhomogeneity, without fine-tuning the interaction parameters. Possible implications to recent experiments on the honeycomb-lattice magnets Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ and 6HB-Ba$_3$NiSb$_2$O$_9$ exhibiting the gapless QSL-like behaviors are discussed.

Statistical properties of the one-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes obeying the rate and state dependent friction law

Statistical properties of the one-dimensional spring-block (Burridge-Knopoff) model of earthquakes obeying the rate and state dependent friction law are studied by extensive computer simulations. The quantities computed include the magnitude distribution, the rupture-length distribution, the mainshock recurrence-time distribution, the seismic time correlations before and after the mainshock, the mean slip amount, and the mean stress drop at the mainshock, etc. Events of the model can be classified into two distinct categories. One tends to be unilateral with its epicenter located at the rim of the rupture zone of the preceding event, while the other tends to be bilateral with enhanced "characteristic" features resembling the so-called "asperity". For both types events, the distribution of the rupture length $L_r$ exhibits an exponential behavior at larger sizes, $\approx \exp[-L_r/L_0]$ with a characteristic "seismic correlation length" $L_0$. The mean slip as well as the mean stress drop tends to be rupture-length independent for larger events. The continuum limit of the model is examined, where the model is found to exhibit pronounced characteristic features. In the continuum limit, the characteristic rupture length $L_0$ is estimated to be $\sim $100 [km]. This means that, even in a hypothetical homogenous infinite fault, events cannot be indefinitely large in the exponential sense, the upper limit being of order $\sim 10^3$ kilometers. Implications to real seismicity are discussed.

Finite-temperature crossover phenomenon in the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice

Thermal properties of the $S=1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures are investigated by means of the Hams-de Raedt method for clusters of up to 36 sites possessing a full symmetry of the lattice. The specific heat exhibits, in addition to the double peaks, the third and the forth peaks at lower temperatures. With decreasing the temperature, the type of the magnetic short-range order (SRO) changes around the third-peak temperature from the $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ to the $q$=0 states, suggesting that the third peak of the specific heat is associated with a crossover phenomenon between the spin-liquid states with distinct magnetic SRO. Experimental implications are discussed.

Spin-lattice-coupled order in Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the pyrochlore lattice

Effects of local lattice distortions on the spin ordering are investigated for the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice. It is found by Monte Carlo simulations that the spin-lattice coupling (SLC) originating from site phonons induces a first-order transition into two different types of collinear magnetic ordered states. The state realized at stronger SLC is cubic symmetric characterized by the magnetic (1/2,1/2,1/2) Bragg peaks, while that at weaker SLC is tetragonal symmetric characterized by the (1,1,0) ones, each accompanied by the commensurate local lattice distortions. Experimental implications to chromium spinels are discussed.

Static and dynamical spin correlations of the S=1/2 random-bond antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular and the kagome lattices

Inspired by the recent theoretical suggestion that the random-bond $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular and the kagome lattices might exhibit a randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior when the strength of the randomness exceeds a critical value, and that this "random-singlet state" might be relevant to the QSL behaviors experimentally observed in triangular organic salts $κ{\rm -(ET)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3}$and ${\rm EtMe_3 Sb[Pd(dmit)_2]_2}$ and in kagome herbertsmithite ${\rm CuZn_3(OH)_6Cl_2}$, we further investigate the nature of the static and the dynamical spin correlations of these models. We compute the static and the dynamical spin structure factors, $S({\bf q})$ and $S({\bf q},ω)$, by means of an exact diagonalization method. In both triangular and kagome models, the computed $S({\bf q},ω)$ in the random-singlet state depends on the wavevector ${\bf q}$ only weakly, robustly exhibiting gapless behaviors accompnied by the broad distribution extending to higher energy $ω$. Especially in the strongly random kagome model, $S({\bf q},ω)$ hardly depends on ${\bf q}$, and exhibits an almost flat distribution for a wide range of $ω$, together with a $ω=0$ peak. These features agree semi-quantitatively with the recent neutron-scattering data on a single-crystal herbertsmithite, suggesting that the QSL state observed in herbersmithite might indeed be the randomness-induced QSL state, {\it i.e.\/}, the random-singlet state.

Dynamics of earthquake nucleation process represented by the Burridge-Knopoff model

Dynamics of earthquake nucleation process is studied on the basis of the one-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff (BK) model obeying the rate- and state-dependent friction (RSF) law. We investigate the properties of the model at each stage of the nucleation process, including the quasi-static initial phase, the unstable acceleration phase and the high-speed rupture phase or a mainshock. Two kinds of nucleation lengths L_sc and L_c are identified and investigated. The nucleation length L_sc and the initial phase exist only for a weak frictional instability regime, while the nucleation length L_c and the acceleration phase exist for both weak and strong instability regimes. Both L_sc and L_c are found to be determined by the model parameters, the frictional weakening parameter and the elastic stiffness parameter, hardly dependent on the size of an ensuing mainshock. The sliding velocity is extremely slow in the initial phase up to L_sc, of order the pulling speed of the plate, while it reaches a detectable level at a certain stage of the acceleration phase. The continuum limits of the results are discussed. The continuum limit of the BK model lies in the weak frictional instability regime so that a mature homogeneous fault under the RSF law always accompanies the quasi-static nucleation process. Duration times of each stage of the nucleation process are examined. The relation to the elastic continuum model and implications to real seismicity are discussed.

Low-temperature magnetic properties of the Kondo lattice model in one dimension

Low-temperature magnetic properties of the one-dimensional Kondo-lattice model with classical localized spins are investigated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation combined with an exact diagonalization technique. Comparative simulations are also made for the RKKY classical Heisenberg model known to be perturbatively derived in the weak-coupling limit. In addition to the previously identified antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic and coplanar helical phases, the chiral noncoplanar phase and the collinear phases of the period-4 and 6 are newly identified, neither of which is realized in the corresponding RKKY model. The period-4 collinear phase persists even in the weak-coupling limit at the 1/4- and 3/4-fillings, invalidating the perturbative approach at these fillings.

Quantum spin-liquid behavior in the spin-1/2 random-bond Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice

The effect of the quenched bond-randomness on the ordering of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is investigated by means of an exact-diagonalization method. When the randomness exceeds a critical value, the ground state of the model exhibits a transition within the non-magnetic state into the randomness-relevant gapless spin-liquid state. Implications to the S=1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnet herbertsmithite is discussed.

Quantum spin-liquid behavior in the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

Experimental quest for the hypothetical "quantum spin liquid" state has recently met a few promising candidate materials including organic salts κ-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3 and EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, S=1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets consisting of molecular dimers. These compounds exhibit no magnetic ordering nor the spin freezing down to very low temperature, while various physical quantities exhibit gapless behaviors. Recent dielectric measurements revealed the glassy dielectric response suggesting the random freezing of the electric polarization degrees of freedom. Inspired by this observation, we propose as a minimal model of the observed quantum spin-liquid behavior the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg on the triangular lattice with a quenched randomness in the exchange interaction. We study both zero- and finite-temperature properties of the model by an exact diagonalization method, to find that when the randomness exceeds a critical value the model exhibits a quantum spin-liquid ground state. This randomness-induced quantum spin-liquid state exhibits gapless behaviors including the temperature-linear specific heat. The results provide a consistent explanation of the recent experimental observations on organic salts.

Monte Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional XY spin glass focusing on the chiral and the spin order

The ordering of the three-dimensional isotropic {\it XY} spin glass with the nearest-neighbor random Gaussian coupling is studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. To investigate the ordering of the spin and the chirality, we compute several independent physical quantities including the glass order parameter, the Binder parameter, the correlation-length ratio, the overlap distribution and the non-self-averageness parameter, {\it etc}, for both the spin-glass (SG) and the chiral-glass (CG) degrees of freedom. Evidence of the spin-chirality decoupling, {\it i.e.}, the CG and the SG order occurring at two separated temperatures, $0<T_{SG}<T_{CG}$, is obtained from the glass order parameter, which is fully corroborated by the Binder parameter. By contrast, the CG correlation-length ratio yields a rather pathological and inconsistent result in the range of sizes we studied, which may originate from the finite-size effect associated with a significant short-length drop-off of the spatial CG correlations. Finite-size-scaling analysis yields the CG exponents $ν_{CG}=1.36^{+0.15}_{-0.37}$ and $η_{CG}=0.26^{+0.29}_{-0.26}$, and the SG exponents $ν_{SG}=1.22^{+0.26}_{-0.06}$ and $η_{SG}=-0.54^{+0.24}_{-0.52}$. The obtained exponents are close to those of the Heisenberg SG, but are largely different from those of the Ising SG. The chiral overlap distribution and the chiral Binder parameter exhibit the feature of a continuous one-step replica-symmetry breaking (1RSB), consistently with the previous reports. Such a 1RSB feature is again in common with that of the Heisenberg SG, but is different from the Ising one, which may be the cause of the difference in the CG critical properties from the Ising SG ones despite of a common $Z_2$ symmetry.

Finite-temperature transition of the distorted kagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Motivated by the recent experiment on kagome-lattice antiferromagnets, we study the zero-field ordering behavior of the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on a uniaxially distorted kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A first-order transition, which has no counterpart in the corresponding undistorted model, takes place at a very low temperature. Origin of the transition is ascribed to a cooperative proliferation of topological excitations inherent to the model.
