Thermal photons in QGP and non-ideal effects

We investigate the thermal photon production-rates using one dimensional boost-invariant second order relativistic hydrodynamics to find proper time evolution of the energy density and the temperature. The effect of bulk-viscosity and non-ideal equation of state are taken into account in a manner consistent with recent lattice QCD estimates. It is shown that the \textit{non-ideal} gas equation of state i.e $ε-3\,P\,\neq 0$ behaviour of the expanding plasma, which is important near the phase-transition point, can significantly slow down the hydrodynamic expansion and thereby increase the photon production-rates. Inclusion of the bulk viscosity may also have similar effect on the hydrodynamic evolution. However the effect of bulk viscosity is shown to be significantly lower than the \textit{non-ideal} gas equation of state. We also analyze the interesting phenomenon of bulk viscosity induced cavitation making the hydrodynamical description invalid. We include the viscous corrections to the distribution functions while calculating the photon spectra. It is shown that ignoring the cavitation phenomenon can lead to erroneous estimation of the photon flux.

Cavitation and thermal photon production in relativistic heavy ion collisions

However the effect of bulk viscosity is shown to be significantly lower than the \textit{non-ideal} gas equation of state. We also analyze the interesting phenomenon of bulk viscosity induced cavitation making the hydrodynamical description invalid. It is shown that ignoring the cavitiation phenomenon can lead to a very significant over estimation of the photon flux. It is argued that this feature could be relevant in studying signature of cavitation in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Dark energy from Neutrinos and Standard Model Higgs potential

If neutrino mass is a function of the Higgs potential then minimum of the total thermodynamic potential $Ω$ (which is the Higgs potential minus the neutrino pressure) can shift from the standard electro-weak vev $v=246.2$ GeV by a small amount which depends on the neutrino pressure. If the neutrino mass is a very steep function of the Higgs field then the equilibrium thermodynamic potential can act like the dark energy with $ω\simeq -1$. Choosing the neutrino mass as logarithmic function of the Higgs field and a heavy mass scale, we find that the correct magnitude of the cosmological density of the present universe $ρ_λ\simeq (0.002 eV)^4$ is obtained by choosing the heavy mass at the GUT scale.

Kinetics of chiral phase transition in hot and dense quark matter

The kinetics of chiral transitions in hot and dense quark matter is studied via a microscopic framework (Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model) and a phenomenological model (Ginzburg-Landau free energy). We focus on the far-from-equilibrium ordering dynamics subsequent to a quench from the massless quark phase to the massive quark phase. The morphology of the ordering system is characterized by the scaling of the order-parameter correlation function. The domain growth process obeys the Allen-Cahn growth law, $L(t)\sim t^{1/2}$. We also study the growth of bubble of the stable massive phase in a background of the metastable massive phase.

LOFF and breached pairing with cold atoms

We investigate here the Cooper pairing of fermionic atoms with mismatched fermi surfaces using a variational construct for the ground state. We determine the state for different values of the mismatch of chemical potential for weak as well as strong coupling regimes including the BCS BEC cross over region. We consider Cooper pairing with both zero and finite net momentum. Within the variational approximation for the ground state and comparing the thermodynamic potentials, we show that (i) the LOFF phase is stable in the weak coupling regime, (ii) the LOFF window is maximum on the BEC side near the Feshbach resonance and (iii) the existence of stable gapless states with a single fermi surface for negative average chemical potential on the BEC side of the Feshbach resonance.

BCS BEC crossover and phase structure of relativistic system: a variational approach

We investigate here the BCS BEC crossover in relativistic systems using a variational construct for the ground state and the minimization of the thermodynamic potential. This is first studied in a four fermion point interaction model and with a BCS type ansatz for the ground state with fermion pairs. It is shown that the antiparticle degrees of freedom play an important role in the BCS BEC crossover physics, even when the ratio of fermi momentum to the mass of the fermion is small. We also consider the phase structure for the case of fermion pairing with imbalanced populations. Within the ansatz, thermodynamically stable gapless modes for both fermions and anti fermions are seen for strong coupling in the BEC regime. We further investigate the effect of fluctuations of the condensate field by treating it as a dynamical field and generalize the BCS ansatz to include quanta of the condensate field also in a boson fermion model with quartic self interaction of the condensate field. It is seen that the critical temperature decreases with inclusion of fluctuations.

Nucleon propagation through nuclear matter in chiral effective field theory

We treat the propagation of nucleon in nuclear matter by evaluating the ensemble average of the two-point function of nucleon currents in the framework of the chiral effective field theory. We first derive the effective parameters of nucleon to one loop. The resulting formula for the effective mass was known previously and gives an absurd value at normal nuclear density. We then modify it following Weinberg's method for the two-nucleon system in the effective theory. Our results for the effective mass and the width of nucleon are compared with those in the literature.

Color superconductivity with determinant interaction in strange quark matter

We investigate the effect of six fermion determinant interaction on color superconductivity as well as on chiral symmetry breaking. Coupled mass gap equations and the superconducting gap equation are derived through the minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. The effect of nonzero quark -- antiquark condensates on the superconducting gap is derived. This becomes particularly relevant for the case of 2-flavor superconducting matter with unpaired strange quarks in the diquark channel. While the effect of six fermion interaction leads to an enhancement of u-d superconductivity, due to nonvanishing strange quark--antiquark condensates, such an enhancement will be absent at higher densities for u-s or d-s superconductivity due to early (almost) vanishing of light quark-- antiquark condensates.

Color superconducting 2SC+s quark matter and gapless modes at finite temperatures

We investigate the phase diagram of color superconducting quark matter with strange quarks (2SC+s quark matter) in beta equliibrium at zero as well as finite temperatures within a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The variational method as used here allows us to investigate simultaneous formation of condensates in quark--antiquark as well as in diquark channels. Color and electric charge neutrality conditions are imposed in the calculation of the thermodynamic potential. Medium dependance of strange quark mass plays a sensitve role in maintaining charge neutrality conditions. At zero temperature the system goes from gapless phase to usual BCS phase through an intermediate normal phase as density is increased. The gapless modes show a smooth behaviour with respect to temperature vanishing above a critical temperature which is larger than the BCS transition temperature. We observe a sharp transition from gapless superconducting phase to the BCS phase as density is increased for the color neutral matter at zero temperature. As temperature is increased this however becomes a smooth transition.

QCD sum rules for nucleon two-point function in nuclear medium

We derive QCD sum rules from the nucleon two-point function in nuclear medium, calculating its specral function in chiral perturbation theory to one loop. Our calculation shows the inadequacy of the commonly used ansatz to represent the two-point function as the sum of a nucleon pole term and a spectral integral over the high energy continuum. We also point out that it is the energy variable and not its square that must be used in writing the dispersion integrals. The sum rules are obtained by equating terms linear in nucleon number density of the spectral and operator representations of the correlation function. We use them to predict the curent-nucleon coupling, in good agreement with the value known from the vacuum sum rules. They also predict a definite deviation of the four-quark condensate from its ground state saturation value.

Chiral symmetry breaking, color superconductivity and gapless modes in 2SC+s quark matter

We investigate the chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity in color and electric charge neutral quark matter including strange quarks (2SC+s quark matter) in a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model using a variational method. The methodology involves an explicit construction of a variational ground state and minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. Simultaneous existence of a mass gap and a superconducting gap is seen in a small window of quark chemical potential within the model when charge neutrality conditions are not imposed. Enforcing color and electric charge neutrality conditions gives rise to the existence of gapless modes in 2SC+s quark matter depending upon the magnitude of the gap and the difference of the chemical potentials of the condensing quarks. Within the window for gapless modes, it is seen that the strange quark density can be as large as 30%--40% of the number density of either of the condensing light quarks.

Interior gap superfluidity in a two-component Fermi gas of atoms

A new superfluid phase in Fermi matter, termed as "interior gap" (IG) or "breached pair", has been recently predicted by Liu and Wilczek [Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 90}, 047002 (2003)]. This results from pairing between fermions of two species having essentially different Fermi surfaces. Using a nonperturbative variational approach, we analyze the features, such as energy gap, momentum distributions, and elementary excitations associated with the predicted phase. We discuss possible realization of this phase in two-component Fermi gases in an optical trap.

Chiral symmetry breaking, color superconductivity and color neutral quark matter: a variational approach

We investigate the vacuum realignment for chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity at finite density in Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a variational method. The treatment allows us to investigate simultaneous formation of condensates in quark antiquark as well as in diquark channels. The methodology involves an explicit construction of a variational ground state and minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. Color and electric charge neutrality conditions are imposed through introduction of appropriate chemical potentials. Color and flavor dependent condensate functions are determined through minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. The equation of state is calculated. Simultaneous existence of a mass gap and superconducting gap is seen in a small window of quark chemical potential within the model when charge neutrality conditions are not imposed. Enforcing color and electric charge neutrality conditions gives rise to existence of gapless superconducting modes depending upon the magnitude of the gap and the difference of the chemical potentials of the condensing quarks.

Chiral symmetry breaking, color superconductivity and quark matter phase diagram: a variational approach

We discuss in this note simultaneous existence of chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity at finite temperature and density in a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type model. The methodology involves an explicit construction of a variational ground state and minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. There exists solutions to the gap equations at finite densities with both quark antiquark as well as diquark condensates for the "ground" state. However, such a phase is thermodynamically unstable with the pressure being negative in this region. We also compute the equation of state, and obtain the structure of the phase diagram in the model.

Leptogenesis with Heavy Majorana Neutrinos Reexamined

The mass term for Majorana neutrinos explicitly violates lepton number. Several authors have used this fact to create a lepton asymmetry in the universe by considering CP violating effects in the one loop self-energy correction for the decaying heavy Majorana neutrino. We compare and comment on the different approaches used to calculate the lepton asymmetry including those using an effective Hamiltonian and resummed propagators. We also recalculate the asymmetry in the small mass difference limit.

Vacuum structure in QCD and Correlation functions

We discuss here a model of QCD vacuum in terms of quark antiquark and gluon condensates alongwith their fluctuations. The correlation functions of hadronic currents in such a vacuum are evaluated to extract hadron properties. The presence of fluctuations of the condensates are emphasized. The structure of vacuum is then generalised to finite temperatures to study correlation functions at finite temperatures. Finally, we discuss the vacuum structure at finite densities with diquark condensates in a Nambu JonaLasinio type model. The coupled mass gap and superconducting gap equations are solved selfconsistently. For certain parameters of the model nontrivial solutions of both the gap equations are obtained. The equation of state is also computed.

Rotating compact objects with magnetic fields

We consider here the structure of rotating compact objects endowed with a magnetic field in general relativity as models of pulsars. We discuss first the structure of rotating stars in the framework of Hartle taking different realistic equations of state and study their effects on bulk properties of the star. We consider the possibilty of rotating stars with a quark matter core. We further analyse the structure of the magnetic field in the interior of the star as affected by different equations of state as well as due to rotation.

Meson Correlators at Finite Temperature

We evaluate equal time point to point spatial correlation functions of mesonic currents at finite temperature. For this purpose we consider the QCD vacuum structure in terms of quark antiquark condensates and their fluctuations in terms of an irreducible four point structure of the vacuum. The temperature dependence of quark condensates is modeled using chiral perturbation theory for low temperatures and lattice QCD simulations near the critical temperature. We first consider the propagation of quarks in a condensate medium at finite temperature. We then determine the correlation functions in a hot medium. Parameters such as mass, coupling constant and threshold energy are deduced from the finite temperature correlators. We find that all of them decrease close to the critical temperature.
