Dissipative Emergence of Inflation from Quasi-Cyclic Universe

Inflationary models, especially those with plateau-type potentials, are consistent with the cosmological data, but inflation itself does not resolve the initial singularity. This singularity is resolved, for example, by the idea of the quantum creation of the Universe from nothing such as the tunneling and no-boundary proposals. The simplest one predicts a closed Universe. Motivated by these facts, we investigate the classical dynamics of a closed universe with a plateau-type potential. Depending on the initial inflaton field value, the universe can undergo a variety of events: an immediate big crunch, a bounce or cyclic phase, and inflation. Although the non-inflationary solutions may appear irrelevant to our Universe, they can be turned into single or multiple bounces followed by inflation, taking into account the interactions necessary for the reheating of the Universe after inflation. Thus, the dissipative mechanism in our setup explains both the graceful entry to and exit from inflation and gives us an indirect observational handle on the Universe just after creation. We also comment on the implications of these solutions for probabilistic interpretations of the wave function of the Universe.

Dissipative Genesis of the Inflationary Universe

We study an inflation model with a flat scalar potential supported by observations and find that slow-roll inflation can emerge after a quasi-cyclic phase of the Universe, where it undergoes repeated expansions and contractions for a finite time period. The initial conditions and the positive spatial curvature required for such nontrivial dynamics align with the quantum creation of the Universe. The key ingredients that trigger inflation are dissipative interactions of the inflaton, which are necessary to reheat the Universe after inflation and thus give us an observational handle on pre-inflationary physics. Our discovery implies that inflation occurs more robustly after the creation.

Pauli-Villars regularization of Kaluza-Klein Casimir energy with Lorentz symmetry

The Pauli-Villars regularization is appropriate to discuss the UV sensitivity of low-energy observables because it mimics how the contributions of new particles at high energies cancel large quantum corrections from the light particles in the effective field theory. We discuss the UV sensitivity of the Casimir energy density and pressure in an extra-dimensional model in this regularization scheme, and clarify the condition on the regulator fields to preserve the Lorentz symmetry of the vacuum state. Some of the conditions are automatically satisfied in spontaneously-broken supersymmetric models, but supersymmetry is not enough to ensure the Lorentz symmetry. We show that the necessary regulators can be introduced as bulk fields. We also evaluate the Casimir energy density with such regulators, and its deviation from the result obtained in the analytic regularization.

Summing over Non-singular Paths in Quantum Cosmology

In this paper we provide the DeWitt propagator and its wave function in quantum cosmology using the path integral formulation of quantum gravity. The DeWitt boundary condition is introduced as a way to avoid the Big Bang singularity by positing that the wave function of the universe vanishes near the Big Bang. However, there is currently no clear definition of the DeWitt boundary condition in the path integral formulation. To address this issue, we use the image method, which eliminates singular paths in the forbidden region of the infinite potential, and apply this method to quantum cosmology based on the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky formulation of the path integral. We investigate the validity of the image method, and in particular, find that this method is only appropriate when the potential has symmetry with respect to the boundary. We then show that the DeWitt propagator and the DeWitt wave function derived from the image method are consistent with solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for certain models of quantum cosmology.

Hartle-Hawking No-boundary Proposal and Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The former is a prominent hypothesis that describes the quantum creation of the universe, while the latter is a potential theory of quantum gravity that ensures renormalizability and unitarity, at least in the so-called projectable version. For simplicity, we focus on a global universe composed of a set of local universes each of which is closed, homogeneous and isotropic. Although applying the no-boundary proposal to Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is not straightforward, we demonstrate that the proposal can be formulated within the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity utilizing the Lorentzian path integral formulation of quantum gravity. In projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, the no-boundary wave function of the global universe inevitably contains entanglement between different local universes induced by ``dark matter as integration constant''. On the other hand, in the non-projectable version, the no-boundary wave function of the global universe is simply the direct product of wave functions of each local universe. We then discuss how the no-boundary wave function is formulated under Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. For the Dirichlet boundary condition, we point out that its on-shell action diverges due to higher-dimensional operators, but this problem can in principle be ameliorated by taking into account the renormalization group flow. However, utilizing the Picard-Lefschetz theory to identify the relevant critical points and performing the complex lapse integration, we find that only the tunneling wave function can be obtained, as in the case of general relativity. On the other hand, for the Robin boundary condition with a particular imaginary Hubble expansion rate at the initial hypersurface, the no-boundary wave function can be achieved in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity.

Depth formula for modules of finite reducing projective dimension

We prove that the depth formula holds for two finitely generated Tor-independent modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings if one of the modules considered has finite reducing projective dimension (for example, if it has finite projective dimension, or the ring is a complete intersection). This generalizes a result of Bergh-Jorgensen which shows that the depth formula holds for two finitely generated Tor-independent modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings if one of the modules considered has reducible complexity and certain additional conditions hold. Each module that has reducible complexity also has finite complexity and finite reducing projective dimension, but not necessarily vice versa. So a new advantage we have is that, unlike modules of reducible complexity, Betti numbers of modules of finite reducing projective dimension can grow exponentially.

Two theorems on the vanishing of Ext

We prove two theorems on the vanishing of Ext over commutative Noetherian local rings. Our first theorem shows that there are no Burch ideals which are rigid over non-regular local domains. Our second theorem reformulates a conjecture of Huneke-Wiegand in terms of the vanishing of Ext, and highlights its relation with the celebrated Auslander-Reiten conjecture. We also discuss several consequences of our results, for example, about the rigidity of the Frobenius endomorphism in prime characteristic p and a generalization of a result of Araya.

Inflationary $α$-Attractor Models with Singular Derivative of Potential

A generalization of inflationary $α$-attractor models (``polynomial $α$-attractor'') was recently proposed by Kallosh and Linde, in which the potential involves logarithmic functions of the inflaton so that the derivative of the potential but not potential itself has a singularity. We find that the models can lead to viable inflationary observables even without the pole in the kinetic term. Also, the generalization with a pole order other than two does not significantly change the functional form of the potential. This allows a systematic analysis of the predictions of this class of models. Our models predict larger spectral index $n_s$ and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ than in the polynomial $α$-attractor: typically, $n_s$ around 0.97--0.98 and $r$ observable by LiteBIRD. Taking advantage of the relatively large $n_s$, we discuss the modification of the potential to produce primordial black holes as the whole dark matter and gravitational waves induced by curvature perturbations detectable by LISA and BBO/DECIGO, while keeping $n_s$ in agreement with the Planck/BICEP/Keck data.

No Smooth Spacetime in Lorentzian Quantum Cosmology and Trans-Planckian Physics

In minisuperspace quantum cosmology, the Lorentzian path integral formulations of the no-boundary and tunneling proposals have recently been analyzed. But it has been pointed out that the wave function of linearized perturbations around a homogeneous and isotropic background is of an inverse Gaussian form and thus that their correlation functions are divergent. In this paper, we revisit this issue and consider the problem of perturbations in Lorentzian quantum cosmology by modifying the dispersion relation based on trans-Planckian physics. We consider two modified dispersion relations, the generalized Corley-Jacobson dispersion relation with higher momentum terms and the Unruh dispersion relation with a trans-Planckian mode cut-off, as examples. We show that the inverse Gaussian problem of perturbations in Lorentzian quantum cosmology is hard to overcome with the trans-Planckian physics modifying the dispersion relation at short distances.

Some characterizations of local rings via reducing dimensions

In this paper we study homological dimensions of finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian local rings, called reducing homological dimensions. We obtain new characterizations of Gorenstein and complete intersection local rings via reducing homological dimensions. For example, we extend a classical result of Auslander and Bridger, and prove that a local ring is Gorenstein if and only if each finitely generated module over it has finite reducing Gorenstein dimension. Along the way, we prove various connections between complexity and reducing projective dimension of modules.

Spacetime Instability and Quantum Gravity as Low Energy Effective Field Theory

We discuss spacetime instability for effective field theories of quantum gravity. The effective action of gravity introduces infinite higher derivative curvature terms $R^{2}, { R }_{ μν}{ R }^{ μν}, R_{μνκλ} R^{μνκλ}\dots$. Although these higher derivative curvature terms are indispensable to construct the self-consistent renormalizable theory of quantum gravity, they lead to several pathologies. We clearly show that even if they are written as the Planck-suppressed operators they lead to serious consequences and and de Sitter or radiation-dominated Universe is highly unstable. We show that the couplings of these higher derivative curvatures must satisfy $\left|a_{1,2,3}\right|\gtrsim 10^{118}$ to be consistent with the cosmological observations. Thus, the standard effective field theories of quantum gravity fail to describe the observed Universe unless introducing a specific technique dealing with the higher derivative curvature terms.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Europium

We report the realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate of europium atoms, which is a strongly dipolar species with unique properties, a highly symmetric $[\mathrm{Xe}]\ 4f^7 6s^2\ {}^8\mathrm{S}_{7/2}$ electronic ground state and a hyperfine structure. By means of evaporative cooling in a crossed optical dipole trap, we produced a condensate of ${}^{151}$Eu containing up to $5\times 10^4$ atoms. The scattering length of ${}^{151}$Eu was estimated to be $a_s = 110(4)\, a_\mathrm{B}$ by comparing the velocities of expansion of condensates with different orientations of the atomic magnetic moments. We observed deformation of the condensate in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonance at $1.32\,\mathrm{G}$ with a width of $10\,\mathrm{mG}$.

DeWitt boundary condition is consistent in Hořava-Lifshitz quantum gravity

In quantum cosmology the DeWitt boundary condition is a proposal to set the wave function of the universe to vanish at the classical big-bang singularity. In this Letter, we show that in many gravitational theories including general relativity, the DeWitt wave function does not take a desired form once tensor perturbations around a homogeneous and isotropic closed universe are taken into account: anisotropies and inhomogeneities due to the perturbations are not suppressed near the classical singularity. We then show that Hořava-Lifshitz gravity provides a satisfactory DeWitt wave function. In particular, in the limit of $z=3$ anisotropic scaling, we find an exact analytic expression for the DeWitt wave function of the universe with scale-invariant perturbations. In general cases with relevant deformations, we show that the DeWitt wave function can be systematically expanded around the classical big-bang singularity with perturbations under control.

In this paper, we consider the Frobenius pushforward endofunctor $F_\ast$ of the bounded derived category of finitely generated modules over an $F$-finite noetherian local ring. We completely determine the categorical entropy of $F_\ast$ in the sense of Dimitrov, Haiden, Katzarkov, and Kontsevich.

On the reducing projective dimension of the residue field

In this paper we are concerned with certain invariants of modules, called reducing invariants, which have been recently introduced and studied by Araya-Celikbas and Araya-Takahashi. We raise the question whether the residue field of each commutative Noetherian local ring has finite reducing projective dimension and obtain an affirmative answer for the question for a large class of local rings. Furthermore, we construct new examples of modules of infinite projective dimension that have finite reducing projective dimension, and study several fundamental properties of reducing dimensions, especially properties under local homomorphisms of local rings.

Gravitational relaxation of electroweak hierarchy problem

In the present paper, we discuss gravitational relaxation models for the electroweak hierarchy problem. We show that modified gravity can naturally relax the electroweak hierarchy problem where conformal transformation provides a crucial rule about what modified gravity theories are favored to relax the electroweak hierarchy. The conformal transformation connects different gravitational theories and rescaling the metric changes the dimensional parameters like the Higgs mass or the cosmological constant in different frames drastically. When the electroweak scale is naturally realized by dynamical and running behavior of dilatonic scalar field or scaling parameter, the modified gravity theories can relax the electroweak hierarchy problem. We discuss the theoretical and phenomenological validity of the gravitational relaxation models.

DeWitt wave function in Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology with tensor perturbation

We present a well-tempered DeWitt wave function, which vanishes at the classical big-bang singularity, in Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) cosmology with tensor perturbation, both analytically and numerically. In general relativity, the DeWitt wave function is ill-behaved once the tensor perturbation is taken into account. This is essentially because the amplitude of the perturbation diverges at the singularity and the perturbative expansion completely breaks down. On the other hand, in HL gravity it is known that the higher dimensional operators required by the perturbative renormalizability render the tensor perturbation scale-invariant and regular all the way up to the singularity. In this paper we analytically show that in $d+1$ dimensional HL gravity the DeWitt wave function for tensor perturbation is indeed well-defined around the classical big-bang singularity. Also, we numerically demonstrate the well-behaved DeWitt wave function for tensor perturbation from the big-bang to a finite size of the Universe.

When is a subcategory Serre or torsionfree?

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by mod R the category of finitely generated R-modules. In the present paper, we first provide various sufficient (and necessary) conditions for a full subcategory of mod R to be a Serre subcategory, which include several refinements of theorems of Stanley and Wang and of Takahashi with simpler proofs. Next we consider when an IKE-closed subcategory of mod R is a torsionfree class. We investigate certain modules out of which all modules of finite length can be built by taking direct summands and extensions, and then we apply it to show that the IKE-closed subcategories of mod R are torsionfree classes in the case where R is a certain numerical semigroup ring.
