Remarks on a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand and the vanishing of (co)homology

In this paper we study a long-standing conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand which is concerned with the torsion submodule of certain tensor products of modules over one-dimensional local domains. We utilize Hochster's theta invariant and show that the conjecture is true for two periodic modules. We also make use of a result of Orlov and formulate a new condition which, if true over hypersurface rings, forces the conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand to be true over complete intersection rings of arbitrary codimension. Along the way we investigate the interaction between the vanishing of Tate (co)homology and torsion in tensor products of modules, and obtain new results that are of independent interest.

Lorentzian path integral for quantum tunneling and WKB approximation for wave-function

Recently, the Lorentzian path integral formulation using the Picard-Lefschetz theory has attracted much attention in quantum cosmology. In this paper, we analyze the tunneling amplitude in quantum mechanics by using the Lorentzian Picard-Lefschetz formulation and compare it with the WKB analysis of the conventional Schrödinger equation. We show that the Picard-Lefschetz Lorentzian formulation is consistent with the WKB approximation for wave-function and the Euclidean path integral formulation utilizing the solutions of the Euclidean constraint equation. We also consider some problems of this Lorentzian Picard-Lefschetz formulation and discuss a simpler semiclassical approximation of the Lorentzian path integral without integrating the lapse function.

An extension of a depth inequality of Auslander

In this paper, we consider a depth inequality of Auslander which holds for finitely generated Tor-rigid modules over commutative Noetherian local rings. We raise the question of whether such a depth inequality can be extended for $n$-Tor-rigid modules, and obtain an affirmative answer for 2-Tor-rigid modules that are generically free. Furthermore, in the appendix, we use Dao's eta function and determine new classes of Tor-rigid modules over hypersurfaces that are quotient of unramified regular local rings.

Understanding one-body losses in magnetically trapped metastable europium atoms

We report the measurement of one-body loss rates for magnetically trapped metastable europium atoms and the study of their loss mechanism. The loss of atoms observed in a magneto-optical trap is not fully understood because of the indivisibility of the loss regarding optical pumpings due to the presence of cooling laser beams. We magnetically trapped the atoms by directly loading from the magneto-optical trap and observed almost identical one-body loss rates of approximately $2.6\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}$ for two isotopes: $\mathrm{{}^{151}Eu}$ and $\mathrm{{}^{153}Eu}$. Our rate-equation-based model, combined with loss rate measurements carried out with repumpers, shows that blackbody radiation at room temperature drives E1 transitions and induces the observed losses.

Narrow-line magneto-optical trap for europium

We report on the realization of a magneto-optical trap (MOT) for europium atoms using a narrow-line cooling transition with a natural linewidth of 97 kHz. Our starting point is continuous capturing and cooling of optically pumped metastable europium atoms. We have employed simultaneous MOT for the metastable and ground-state atoms. The trapped metastable atoms are successively pumped back to the ground state and then continuously loaded to the narrow-line MOT, where up to $4.7\times10^7$ atoms are captured. A spin-polarized sample at a temperature of $6\,\mathrm{μK}$ and with a peak number density of $2.2\times10^{11}\,\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$ is obtained through the compression process, resulting in a phase space density of $3\times10^{-5}$.

Prime thick subcategories and spectra of derived and singularity categories of noetherian schemes

For an essentially small triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$, we introduce the notion of prime thick subcategories and define the spectrum of $\mathcal{T}$, which shares the basic properties with the spectrum of a tensor triangulated category introduced by Balmer. We mainly focus on triangulated categories that appear in algebraic geometry such as the derived and the singularity categories of a noetherian scheme $X$. We prove that certain classes of thick subcategories are prime thick subcategories of these triangulated categories. Furthermore, we use this result to show that certain subspaces of $X$ are embedded into their spectra as topological spaces.

On the depth and reflexivity of tensor products

In this paper we study the depth of tensor products of homologically finite complexes over commutative Noetherian local rings. As an application of our main result, we determine new conditions under which nonzero tensor products of finitely generated modules over hypersurface rings can be reflexive only if both of their factors are reflexive. A result of Asgharzadeh shows that nonzero symbolic powers of prime ideals in a local ring cannot have finite projective dimension, unless the ring in question is a domain. We make use of this fact in the appendix and consider the reflexivity of tensor products of prime ideals over hypersurface rings.

Swampland Constraints on No-Boundary Quantum Cosmology

The Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal describes the quantum creation of the universe. To have a non-negligible probability to obtain a classical expanding universe, eternal inflation is required, which is severely constrained by Swampland conjectures such as the refined de Sitter conjecture and the distance conjecture. We discuss this issue in detail and demonstrate the incompatibility. We show that the dimensionless parameters in the refined de Sitter conjecture should be bounded from above by a positive power of the scalar potential to realize the classical expanding universe. In other words, the probability of the classical expanding universe is extremely small under the Swampland conjectures unless the parameters are much smaller than unity. If they are order unity, on the other hand, the saddle-point solution itself ceases to exist implying a genuinely quantum universe.

Cohomological dimensions of specialization-closed subsets and subcategories of modules

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. In this paper, we study specialization-closed subsets of Spec R. More precisely, we first characterize the specialization-closed subsets in terms of various closure properties of subcategories of modules. Then, for each nonnegative integer n we introduce the notion of n-wide subcategories of R-modules to consider the question asking when a given specialization-closed subset has cohomological dimension at most n.

Filtrations in module categories, derived categories and prime spectra

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. The notion of n-wide subcategories of Mod R is introduced and studied in Matsui-Nam-Takahashi-Tri-Yen in relation to the cohomological dimension of a specialization-closed subset of Spec R. In this paper, we introduce the notions of n-coherent subsets of Spec R and n-uniform subcategories of D(Mod R), and explore their interactions with n-wide subcategories of Mod R. We obtain a commutative diagram which yields filtrations of subcategories of Mod R, D(Mod R) and subsets of Spec R and complements classification theorems of subcategories due to Gabriel, Krause, Neeman, Takahashi and Angeleri Hugel-Marks-Stovicek-Takahashi-Vitoria.

Serre's condition for tensor products and $n$-Tor-rigidity of modules

In this paper, we study Serre's condition $(S_n)$ for tensor products of modules over a commutative noetherian local ring. The paper aims to show the following. Let $M$ and $N$ be finitely generated module over a commutative noetherian local ring $R$, either of which is $(n+1)$-Tor-rigid. If the tensor product $M \otimes_R N$ satisfies $(S_{n+1})$, then under some assumptions $\mathrm{Tor}_{i}^R(M, N) = 0$ for all $i \ge 1$. The key role is played by $(n+1)$-Tor-rigidity of modules. As applications, we will show that the result recovers several known results.

Quantum Spacetime Instability and Breakdown of Semiclassical Gravity

The semiclassical gravity describes gravitational back-reactions of the classical spacetime interacting with quantum matter fields but the quantum effects on the background is formally defined as higher derivative curvatures. These induce catastrophic instabilities and classic solutions become unstable under small perturbations or their evolutions. In this paper we discuss validity of the semiclassical gravity from the perspective of the spacetime instabilities and consider cosmological dynamics of the Universe in this theory. We clearly show that the homogenous and isotropic flat Universe is unstable and the solutions either grow exponentially or oscillate even in Planckian time $t_{\rm I}=(α_{ 1 }G_N)^{1/2}\approx α_{ 1 }10^{-43}\ {\rm sec}$. The subsequent curvature evolution leads to Planck-scale spacetime curvature in a short time and causes a catastrophe of the Universe unless one takes extremely large values of the gravitational couplings. Furthermore, we confirm the above suggestion by comparing the semiclassical solutions and $Λ$CDM with the Planck data and it is found that the semiclassical solutions are not consistent with the cosmological observations. Thus, the standard semiclassical gravity using quantum energy momentum tensor $\left< { T }_{ μν} \right>$ is not appropriate to describe our Universe.

QCD Axion Window and False Vacuum Higgs Inflation

The abundance of the QCD axion is known to be suppressed if the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_{\rm inf}$, is lower than the QCD scale, and if the inflation lasts sufficiently long. We show that the tight upper bound on the inflation scale can be significantly relaxed if the eternal old inflation is driven by the standard-model Higgs field trapped in a false vacuum at large field values. Specifically, $H_{\rm inf}$ can be larger than $100\,$GeV if the false vacuum is located above the intermediate scale. We also discuss the slow-roll inflation after the tunneling from the false vacuum to the electroweak vacuum.

Revisiting regularization with Kaluza-Klein states and Casimir vacuum energy from extra dimensional spaces

In the present paper, we investigate regularization of the one-loop quantum corrections with infinite Kaluza-Klein (KK) states and evaluate Casimir vacuum energy from extra dimensions. The extra dimensional models always involve the infinite massless or massive Kaluza-Klein states, and therefore, the regularization of the infinite KK corrections is highly problematic. In order to avoid the ambiguity, we adopt the proper time integrals and the Riemann zeta function regularization in evaluating the summations of infinite KK states. In the calculation, we utilize the KK regularization method with exchanging the infinite summations and the infinite loop integrals. At the same time, we also evaluate the correction by the the dimensional regularization method without exchanging the summations and the loop integrals. Then, we clearly show that the regularized Casimir corrections from the KK states have the form of $\propto 1/R^2$ for the Higgs mass and $\propto 1/R^4$ for the cosmological constant, where $R$ is the compactification radius. We also evaluate the Casimir energy in supersymmetric extra-dimensional models. The contributions from bulk fermions and bulk bosons are not offset because we choose SUSY breaking boundary conditions. The non-zero supersymmetric Casimir corrections from extra dimensions undoubtedly contribute to the Higgs mass and the cosmological constant. We conclude the coefficients of such corrections are enhanced compared to the case without bulk supersymmetry.

Trans-Planckian quantum corrections and inflationary vacuum fluctuations of non-minimally coupled scalar fields

In the present paper we discuss how trans-Planckian physics affects inflationary vacuum fluctuations and primordial density perturbations. The trans-Planckian problem during inflation has been widely discussed in literature, but it is still under debate. We reconsider this problem by using the two-point correlation function of the non-minimally coupled scalar fields and constructing the effective potential with the adiabatic (WKB) regularization or approximation. First, we clearly show that the cut-off divergence of the quantum fluctuations does not drastically change during inflation under reasonable assumptions and the corrections can be embedded in standard effective potential. Thus, the UV effects on the primordial density perturbation are well translated into the effective potential. Then, we find out the modified effective potential from the inflationary fluctuations and show how the trans-Planckian or UV corrections change the potential during inflation. We clearly show that the new physics strongly affects the inflation potential during inflation and we obtain a inflationary constraint $Λ_{\rm UV} \ll H/g^{1/2}$ where $g$ is the interaction coupling at the UV scale $Λ_{\rm UV}$.

On an example concerning the second rigidity theorem

In this paper we revisit an example of Celikbas and Takahashi concerning the reflexivity of tensor products of modules. We study Tor-rigidity and the Hochster--Huneke graph with vertices consisting of minimal prime ideals, and determine a condition with which the aforementioned example cannot occur. Our result, in particular, corroborates the Second Rigidity Theorem of Huneke and Wiegand.

Bouncing Universe from Nothing

We find a class of solutions for a homogeneous and isotropic universe in which the initially expanding universe stops expanding, experiences contraction, and then expands again (the "bounce"), in the framework of Einstein gravity with a real scalar field without violating the null energy condition nor encountering any singularities. Two essential ingredients for the bouncing universe are the positive spatial curvature and the scalar potential which becomes flatter at large field values. Depending on the initial condition, either the positive curvature or the negative potential stops the cosmic expansion and begins the contraction phase. The flat potential plays a crucial role in triggering the bounce. After the bounce, the flat potential naturally allows the universe to enter the slow-roll inflation regime, thereby making the bouncing universe compatible with observations. If the e-folding of the subsequent inflation is just enough, a positive spatial curvature may be found in the future observations. Our scenario nicely fits with the creation of the universe from nothing, which leads to the homogeneous and isotropic universe with positive curvature. As a variant of the mechanism, we also find solutions representing a cyclic universe.

Eternal Inflation and Swampland Conjectures

We study if eternal inflation is realized while satisfying the recently proposed string Swampland criteria concerning the range of scalar field excursion, $|Δϕ| < \mathcal{D} \cdot M_{\rm P}$, and the potential gradient, $|\nabla V| > c \cdot V/M_{\rm P}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ and $c$ are constants of order unity, and $M_{\rm P}$ is the reduced Planck mass. We find that only the eternal inflation of chaotic type is possible for $c \sim {\cal O}(0.01)$ and $1/\mathcal{D} \sim {\cal O}(0.01)$, and that the Hubble parameter during the eternal inflation is parametrically close to the Planck scale, and is in the range of $2 πc \lesssim H_{\rm inf}/M_{\rm P} < 1/\sqrt{3}$.
