Instability of De Sitter Spacetime induced by Quantum Conformal Anomaly

The instability of (quasi) de Sitter spacetime from quantum gravitational effects has been discussed in many works. Especially, the gravitational backreaction from quantum energy momentum tensor is crucial for understanding the low-energy description of quantum gravity and sometimes destabilize the spacetime. In this paper we discuss the (quasi) de Sitter instability from gravitational backreaction involving quantum conformal anomaly. The conformal or trace anomaly corresponds to the quantum gravitational contributions of the massless conformal fields and affects the spacetime homogeneously. First, we derive the conformal anomaly using the adiabatic (WKB) approximation and discuss the renormalization of the quantum energy momentum tensor. Then, we consider the dynamics of the Hubble parameter based on the semiclassical Einstein's equations including the cosmological constant, the conformal anomaly and the higher-derivative terms. We have clearly shown that the classical de Sitter attractor $H_{\mathrm{C}} \simeq \sqrt{Λ/{3}}$ are generally unstable from the viewpoint of the semiclassical gravity and the inflation is destabilized except for the specific conditions. Unless the fine-tuning of the conformal anomaly and the higher derivative terms, the inflation finally becomes the Planckian inflation with the Hubble scale $H \approx M_{\rm P}\equiv \sqrt{1/8πG_{N}}$ or terminates $H(t) \rightarrow 0$. The latter case suggests that the cosmic inflation could not last long and the eternal inflation scenarios are strongly constrained.

Isocurvature Perturbations of Dark Energy and Dark Matter from the Swampland Conjecture

We point out that the recently proposed Swampland conjecture on the potential gradient can lead to isocurvature perturbations of dark energy, if the quintessence field acquires large quantum fluctuations during high-scale inflation preferred by the conjecture. Also, if the quintessence field is coupled to a dark sector that contains dark matter, isocurvature perturbation of dark matter is similarly induced. Both isocurvature perturbations can be suppressed if the quintessence potential allows a tracker solution in the early Universe. We find that a vector field of mass $\lesssim {\cal O}(1)$ meV is an excellent dark matter candidate in this context, not only because the right abundance is known to be produced by quantum fluctuations during high-scale inflation without running afoul of isocurvature bounds, but also because its coupling to the quintessence does not spoil the flatness of the potential.

Electroweak Vacuum Collapse induced by Vacuum Fluctuations of the Higgs Field around Evaporating Black Holes

In this paper, we discuss the Higgs vacuum stability around evaporating black holes. We provide a new approach to investigate the false vacuum decay around the black hole and clearly show how vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs induce a gravitational collapse of the vacuum. Furthermore, we point out that the backreaction of the Hawking radiation can not be ignored and the gravitational vacuum decay is exponentially suppressed. However, a large number of the evaporating (or evaporated) primordial black holes threaten the existence of the Universe and we obtain a new upper bound on the evaporating PBH abundance from the vacuum stability. Finally, we show that the high-order corrections of the BSM or QG would not destabilize the Higgs potential, otherwise even a single evaporating black hole triggers a collapse of the electroweak vacuum.

Electroweak Vacuum Instability and Renormalized Vacuum Field Fluctuations in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Background

The cosmological Higgs vacuum stability has been an attractive research subject and it is crucial to accurately follow the development of the Higgs fluctuations. In this work, we thoroughly investigate how the vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field affect the stability of the electroweak vacuum in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. Adopting adiabatic (WKB) approximation or adiabatic regularization methods, we clearly show that vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field in the FLRW background depend on the curvature and also masses of the Higgs or other scalar fields. The Higgs fluctuations can generate true vacuum bubbles and trigger off a collapse of the electroweak vacuum. Furthermore we clearly show that the effective Higgs potential in the FLRW background is modified by the Higgs vacuum fluctuations. The vacuum fluctuations of the standard model fields can stabilize or destabilize the effective Higgs potential through backreaction effects. Considering the improved effective Higgs potential with the Higgs vacuum fluctuations $\left< { δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$ in various backgrounds, we provide new cosmological constraints on the mass of the Higgs-coupled scalar fields and a quantitative description of the Higgs stability in the FLRW background.

Singular equivalences of commutative noetherian rings and reconstruction of singular loci

Two left noetherian rings $R$ and $S$ are said to be {\it singularly equivalent} if their singularity categories are equivalent as triangulated categories. The aim of this paper is to give a necessary condition for two commutative noetherian rings to be singularly equivalent. To do this, we develop the support theory for triangulated categories without tensor structure.

Electroweak Vacuum Instability and Renormalized Higgs Field Vacuum Fluctuations in the Inflationary Universe

In this work, we investigated the electroweak vacuum instability during or after inflation. In the inflationary Universe, i.e., de Sitter space, the vacuum field fluctuations $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$ enlarge in proportion to the Hubble scale $H^{2}$. Therefore, the large inflationary vacuum fluctuations of the Higgs field $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$ are potentially catastrophic to trigger the vacuum transition to the negative-energy Planck-scale vacuum state and cause an immediate collapse of the Universe. However, the vacuum field fluctuations $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>$, i.e., the vacuum expectation values have an ultraviolet divergence, and therefore a renormalization is necessary to estimate the physical effects of the vacuum transition. Thus, in this paper, we revisit the electroweak vacuum instability from the perspective of quantum field theory (QFT) in curved space-time, and discuss the dynamical behavior of the homogeneous Higgs field $ϕ$ determined by the effective potential ${ V }_{\rm eff}\left( ϕ\right)$ in curved space-time and the renormalized vacuum fluctuations $\left< {δϕ}^{ 2 } \right>_{\rm ren}$ via adiabatic regularization and point-splitting regularization. We simply suppose that the Higgs field only couples the gravity via the non-minimal Higgs-gravity coupling $ξ(μ)$. In this scenario, the electroweak vacuum stability is inevitably threatened by the dynamical behavior of the homogeneous Higgs field $ϕ$, or the formations of AdS domains or bubbles unless the Hubble scale is small enough $H< Λ_{I} $.

Thick tensor ideals of right bounded derived categories

Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by $D^-(R)$ the derived category of cochain complexes $X$ of finitely generated $R$-modules with $H^i(X)=0$ for $i\gg0$. Then $D^-(R)$ has the structure of a tensor triangulated category with tensor product $-\otimes_R^L-$ and unit object $R$. In this paper, we study thick tensor ideals of $D^-(R)$, i.e., thick subcategories closed under the tensor action by each object in $D^-(R)$, and investigate the Balmer spectrum $Spc\,D^-(R)$ of $D^-(R)$, i.e., the set of prime thick tensor ideals of $D^-(R)$. First, we give a complete classification of the thick tensor ideals of $D^-(R)$ generated by bounded complexes, establishing a generalized version of the Hopkins-Neeman smash nilpotence theorem. Then, we define a pair of maps between the Balmer spectrum $Spc\,D^-(R)$ and the Zariski spectrum $Spec\,R$, and study their topological properties. After that, we compare several classes of thick tensor ideals of $D^-(R)$, relating them to specialization-closed subsets of $Spec\,R$ and Thomason subsets of $Spc\,D^-(R)$, and construct a counterexample to a conjecture of Balmer. Finally, we explore thick tensor ideals of $D^-(R)$ in the case where $R$ is a discrete valuation ring.

Cosmological Constant Problem and Renormalized Vacuum Energy Density in Curved Background

The current vacuum energy density observed as dark energy ${ ρ}_{ \rm dark }\simeq 2.5\times10^{-47}\ {\rm GeV^{4}}$ is unacceptably small compared with any other scales. Therefore, we encounter serious fine-tuning problem and theoretical difficulty to derive the dark energy. However, the theoretically attractive scenario has been proposed and discussed in literature: In terms of the renormalization-group (RG) running of the cosmological constant, the vacuum energy density can be expressed as ${ ρ}_{ \rm vacuum }\simeq m^{2}H^{2}$ where $m$ is the mass of the scalar field and rather dynamical in curved spacetime. However, there has been no rigorous proof to derive this expression and there are some criticisms about the physical interpretation of the RG running cosmological constant. In the present paper, we revisit the RG running effects of the cosmological constant and investigate the renormalized vacuum energy density in curved spacetime. We demonstrate that the vacuum energy density described by ${ ρ}_{ \rm vacuum }\simeq m^{2}H^{2}$ appears as quantum effects of the curved background rather than the running effects of cosmological constant. Comparing to cosmological observational data, we obtain an upper bound on the mass of the scalar fields to be smaller than the Planck mass, $m \lesssim M_{\rm Pl}$.

Connectedness of the Balmer spectra of right bounded derived categories

By virtue of Balmer's celebrated theorem, the classification of thick tensor ideals of a tensor triangulated category $\T$ is equivalent to the topological structure of its Balmer spectrum $\spc \T$. Motivated by this theorem, we discuss connectedness and noetherianity of the Balmer spectrum of a right bounded derived category of finitely generated modules over a commutative ring.

Higgs vacuum metastability in primordial inflation, preheating, and reheating

Current measurements of the Higgs boson mass and top Yukawa coupling suggest that the effective Higgs potential develops an instability below the Planck scale. If the energy scale of inflation is as high as the GUT scale, inflationary quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field can easily destabilize the standard electroweak vacuum and produce a lot of AdS domains. This destabilization during inflation can be avoided if a relatively large nonminimal Higgs-gravity or inflaton-Higgs coupling is introduced. Such couplings generate a large effective mass term for the Higgs, which can raise the effective Higgs potential and suppress the vacuum fluctuation of the Higgs field. After primordial inflation, however, such effective masses drops rapidly and the nonminimal Higgs-gravity or inflaton-Higgs coupling can cause large fluctuations of the Higgs field to be generated via parametric resonance, thus producing AdS domains in the preheating stage. Furthermore, thermal fluctuations of the Higgs field cannot be neglected in the proceeding reheating epoch. We discuss the Higgs vacuum fluctuations during inflation, preheating, and reheating, and show that the Higgs metastability problem is severe unless the energy scale of the inflaton potential is much lower than the GUT scale.

Higgs sector extension of the neutrino minimal standard model with thermal freeze-in production mechanism

The neutrino minimal Standard Model (νMSM) is the minimum extension of the standard model. In this model, the Dodelson-Widrow mechanism (DW) produces keV sterile neutrino dark matter (DM) and the degenerate GeV heavy Majorana neutrinos lead to leptogenesis. However, the DW mechanism has been ruled out by Lyman-α bounds and X-ray constraints. An alternative scenario that evades these constraints has been proposed, where the sterile neutrino DM is generated by the thermal freeze-in mechanism via a singlet scalar. In this paper, we consider a Higgs sector extension of the νMSM to improve dark matter sectors and leptogenesis scenarios, focusing on the thermal freeze-in production mechanism. We discuss various thermal freeze-in scenarios for the production of keV-MeV sterile neutrino DM with a singlet scalar, and reinvestigate the Lyman-α bounds and the X-ray constraints on the parameter regions. Furthermore, we propose thermal freeze-in leptogenesis scenarios in the extended νMSM. The singlet scalar needs to be TeV scale in order to generate the observed DM relic density and baryon number density with the thermal freeze-in production mechanism.

Singularity categories and singular equivalences for resolving subcategories

Let $\X$ be a resolving subcategory of an abelian category. In this paper we investigate the singularity category $\ds(\underline\X)=\db(\mod\underline\X)/\kb(\proj(\mod\underline\X))$ of the stable category $\underline\X$ of $\X$. We consider when the singularity category is triangle equivalent to the stable category of Gorenstein projective objects, and when the stable categories of two resolving subcategories have triangle equivalent singularity categories. Applying this to the module category of a Gorenstein ring, we characterize simple hypersurface singularities of type $(\a_1)$ as complete intersections over which the stable categories of resolving subcategories have trivial singularity categories. We also generalize several results of Yoshino on totally reflexive modules.

When are n-syzygy modules n-torsionfree?

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. We consider the question of when n-syzygy modules over R are n-torsionfree in the sense of Auslander and Bridger. Our tools include Serre's condition and certain conditions on the local Gorenstein property of R. Our main result implies the converse of a celebrated theorem of Evans and Griffith.

Maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations and Serre's condition

This paper studies the relationship between Serre's condition $(\R_n)$ and Auslander--Buchweitz's maximal Cohen--Macaulay approximations. It is proved that a Gorenstein local ring satisfies $(\R_n)$ if and only if every maximal Cohen--Macaulay module is a direct summand of a maximal Cohen--Macaulay approximation of a (Cohen--Macaulay) module of codimension $n+1$.
