Anisotropic Charge Distribution Induced by Spin Polarization in La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ Thin Films Studied by X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism

Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is proportional to the square of the ferromagnetic moment. Using the XMLD sum rule and cluster-model calculation, it has been shown that more Mn 3$d$ electrons are distributed in orbitals elongated along the direction parallel to the spin polarization than in orbitals elongated in the direction perpendicular to it. The cluster-model calculation has shown that the effect of tensile strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate on the XMLD spectra is also consistent with the observed XMLD spectral line shapes.

Observation of a Dirac nodal line in AlB2

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of AlB2 which is isostructural to high-temperature superconductor MgB2. Using soft-x-ray photons, we accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and found a highly anisotropic Dirac-cone band at the K point in the bulk hexagonal Brillouin zone. This band disperses downward on approaching the H point while keeping its degeneracy at the Dirac point, producing a characteristic Dirac nodal line along the KH line. We also found that the band structure of AlB2 is regarded as a heavily electron-doped version of MgB2 and is therefore well suited for fully visualizing the predicted Dirac nodal line. The present results suggest that (Al,Mg)B2 system is a promising platform for studying the interplay among Dirac nodal line, carrier doping, and possible topological superconducting properties.

Electronic properties across metal-insulator transition in β-pyrochlore-type CsW2O6 epitaxial films

In CsW2O6, which undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 213 K, the emergence of exotic properties associated with rattling motion of Cs is expected owing to its characteristic β-pyrochlore-type structure. However, a hurdle for crystal growth hampers elucidation of detailed properties and mechanisms of the MIT. Here we report on the epitaxial growth of β-pyrochlore-type CsW2O6 films and their electronic properties across the MIT. Using pulsed-laser deposi-tion technique, we grew single-crystalline CsW2O6 films exhibiting remarkably lower resistivity compared with a poly-crystalline bulk and sharp MIT around 200 K. Negative magnetoresistance and positive Hall coefficient were found, which became pronounced below 200 K. The valence-band and core-levels photoemission spectra indicated the drastic changes across the MIT. In the valence band photoemission spectrum, the finite density of states was observed at the Fermi level in the metallic phase. In contrast, an energy gap appeared in the insulating phase. The split of W 4f core-level spectrum suggested the charge disproportionation of W5+ and W6+ in the insulating phase. The change of spectral shape in the Cs 4d core levels reflected the rattling motion of Cs+ cations. These results strongly suggest that CsW2O6 is a novel material, in which MIT is driven by the charge disproportionation associated with the rattling motion.

Peculiar bonding associated with atomic doping and hidden honeycombs in borophene

Engineering atomic-scale structures allows great manipulation of physical properties and chemical processes for advanced technology. We show that the B atoms deployed at the centers of honeycombs in boron sheets, borophene, behave as nearly perfect electron donors for filling the graphitic $σ$ bonding states without forming additional in-plane bonds by first-principles calculations. The dilute electron density distribution owing to the weak bonding surrounding the center atoms provides easier atomic-scale engineering and is highly tunable via in-plane strain, promising for practical applications, such as modulating the extraordinarily high thermal conductance that exceeds the reported value in graphene. The hidden honeycomb bonding structure suggests an unusual energy sequence of core electrons that has been verified by our high-resolution core-level photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. With the experimental and theoretical evidence, we demonstrate that borophene exhibits a peculiar bonding structure and is distinctive among two-dimensional materials.

Growth of Antiperovskite Oxide Ca3SnO Films by Pulsed Laser Deposition

We report the epitaxial growth of Ca3SnO antiperovskite oxide films on (001)-oriented cubic yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates by using a conventional pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. In this work, a sintered Ca3SnO pellet is used as the ablation target. X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate the (001) growth of Ca3SnO films with the antiperovskite structure and a cube-on-cube orientation relationship to the YSZ substrate. The successful synthesis of the antiperovskite phase is further confirmed by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. These results strongly suggest that antiperovskite-oxide films can be directly grown on substrates from the target material using a PLD technique.

Emergence of quantum critical behavior in metallic quantum-well states of strongly correlated oxides

Controlling quantum critical phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems, which emerge in the neighborhood of a quantum phase transition, is a major challenge in modern condensed matter physics. Quantum critical phenomena are generated from the delicate balance between long-range order and its quantum fluctuation. So far, the nature of quantum phase transitions has been investigated by changing a limited number of external parameters such as pressure and magnetic field. We propose a new approach for investigating quantum criticality by changing the strength of quantum fluctuation that is controlled by the dimensional crossover in metallic quantum well (QW) structures of strongly correlated oxides. With reducing layer thickness to the critical thickness of metal-insulator transition, crossover from a Fermi liquid to a non-Fermi liquid has clearly been observed in the metallic QW of SrVO$_3$ by \textit{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with the critical exponent $α = 1$ is found to emerge in the two-dimensional limit of the metallic QW states, indicating that a quantum critical point exists in the neighborhood of the thickness-dependent Mott transition. These results suggest that artificial QW structures provide a unique platform for investigating novel quantum phenomena in strongly correlated oxides in a controllable fashion.

Thickness dependence and dimensionality effects of charge and magnetic orderings in La1/3Sr2/3FeO3 thin films

We investigate the thickness effects on charge and magnetic orderings in Fe perovskite oxide La1/3Sr2/3FeO3/SrTiO3 thin films by hard x-ray and resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) with changing thin film thickness systematically. We found that the correlation lengths of the magnetic ordering along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions are comparable and proportional to the thickness, and shows stronger thickness dependence than those of charge orderg. %the thickness dependence of correlation length of charge ordering is smaller than that of magnetic orderings. The magnetic ordered states disappear when the correlation length of magnetic ordering decreases to that of charge ordering through the intrinsic thickness effects. Surface sensitive grazing-incident RSXS revealed that the orderings exist even in the surface region, which indicates that the observed orderings is not affected by surface effect like oxygen vacancies. Critical thickness is in 5-15 nm, which corresponds to 4-11 antiferromagnetic ordering period. This critical value seems to be common to other ferromagnetic oxide thin films.

Dirac fermions in borophene

Honeycomb structures of group IV elements can host massless Dirac fermions with non-trivial Berry phases. Their potential for electronic applications has attracted great interest and spurred a broad search for new Dirac materials especially in monolayer structures. We present a detailed investigation of the β12 boron sheet, which is a borophene structure that can form spontaneously on a Ag(111) surface. Our tight-binding analysis revealed that the lattice of the β12-sheet could be decomposed into two triangular sublattices in a way similar to that for a honeycomb lattice, thereby hosting Dirac cones. Furthermore, each Dirac cone could be split by introducing periodic perturbations representing overlayer-substrate interactions. These unusual electronic structures were confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and validated by first-principles calculations. Our results suggest monolayer boron as a new platform for realizing novel high-speed low-dissipation devices.

Semimetallic "Electride Bands" Derived from Interlayer Electrons in Quasi-Two-Dimensional Electride Y$_2$C

Two-dimensional (2D) electrides are a new concept material in which anionic electrons are confined in the interlayer space between positively charged layers. We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on Y$_2$C, which is a possible 2D electride, in order to verify the formation of 2D electride states in Y$_2$C. We clearly observe the existence of semimetallic "electride bands" near the Fermi level, as predicted by ${ab}$ ${initio}$ calculations, conclusively demonstrating that Y$_2$C is a quasi-2D electride with electride bands derived from interlayer anionic electrons.

Surface Kondo Effect and Non-Trivial Metallic State of the Kondo Insulator YbB12

A synergistic effect between strong electron correlation and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) has been theoretically predicted to result in a new topological state of quantum matter on Kondo insulators (KIs), so-called topological Kondo insulators (TKIs). One TKI candidate has been experimentally observed on the KI SmB6(001), and the origin of the surface states (SS) and the topological order of SmB6 has been actively discussed. Here, we show a metallic SS on the clean surface of another TKI candidate YbB12(001), using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The SS showed temperature-dependent reconstruction corresponding with the Kondo effect observed for bulk states. Despite the low-temperature insulating bulk, the reconstructed SS with c-f hybridization was metallic, forming a closed Fermi contour surrounding $\barΓ$ on the surface Brillouin zone and agreeing with the theoretically expected behavior for SS on TKIs. These results demonstrate the temperature-dependent holistic reconstruction of two-dimensional states localized on KIs surface driven by the Kondo effect.

Effects of Cr substitution on the magnetic and transport properties and electronic states of SrRuO3 epitaxial thin films

The effect of Cr substitution in a SrRuO3 epitaxial thin film on SrTiO3 substrate was investigated by measuring the magnetic and transport properties and the electronic states. The ferromagnetic transition temperature of the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film (166 K) was higher than that of the SrRuO3 film (147 K). Resonant photoemission spectroscopy experimentally revealed that the Cr 3dt2g orbital is hybridized with the Ru 4dt2g orbital in the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film, supporting the assumption that the enhancement of the ferromagnetic transition temperature through Cr substitution stems from the widening of energy bands due to the hybridization of Cr 3dt2g and Ru 4dt2g orbitals. Furthermore, we found that the Hall resistivity of the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film at low temperature is not a linear function of magnetic field in the high-field region where the out-of-plane magnetization was saturated; this result suggests that the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film undergoes a structural transition at low temperature accompanied with the modulation of the Fermi surface.

Origin of the anomalous mass renormalization in metallic quantum well states of correlated oxide SrVO$_3$

$In$ $situ$ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on SrVO$_3$ ultrathin films, which show metallic quantum well (QW) states, to unveil the origin of the anomalous mass enhancement in the QW subbands. The line-shape analysis of the ARPES spectra reveals that the strength of the electron correlation increases as the subband bottom energy approaches the Fermi level. These results indicate that the anomalous subband-dependent mass enhancement mainly arises from the quasi-one-dimensional character of confined V $3d$ states as a result of their orbital-selective quantization.

Isotropic Kink and Quasiparticle Excitations in the Three-Dimensional Perovskite Manganite La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$

In order to reveal many-body interactions in the three-dimensional (3D) perovskite manganite, we have performed an $in$ $situ$ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and investigated the behaviors of quasiparticles. We observe quasiparticle peaks around the Fermi momentum, both in the electron and the hole bands, and clear kinks throughout the hole Fermi surface in the ARPES band dispersion. The isotropic behavior sharply contrasts to the strong anisotropic quasiparticle excitation observed in layered manganites. These results suggest that polaronic quasiparticles by coupling of the electrons with Jahn-Teller phonons play an important role in the physical properties of the ferromagnetic metallic phase in 3D manganite LSMO.

Electronic Structures of CeM2Al10 (M = Fe, Ru, and Os) Studied by Soft X-ray Resonant and High-Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopies

We have performed a photoemission spectroscopy (PES) study of CeM2Al10 (M = Fe, Ru, and Os) to directly observe the electronic structure involved in the unusual magnetic ordering. Soft X-ray resonant (SXR) PES provides spectroscopic evidence of the hybridization between conduction and Ce 4f electrons (c-f hybridization) and the order of the hybridization strength (Ru < Os < Fe). High-resolution (HR) PES of CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10, as compared with that of CeFe2Al10, identifies two structures that can be ascribed to structures induced by the c-f hybridization and the antiferromagnetic ordering, respectively. Although the c-f hybridization-induced structure is a depletion of the spectral intensity (pseudogap) around the Fermi level (EF) with an energy scale of 20-30 meV, the structure related to the antiferromagnetic ordering is observed as a shoulder at approximately 10-11 meV within the pseudogap. The energies of the shoulder structures of CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10 are approximately half of the optical gap (20 meV), indicating that EF is located at the midpoint of the gap.

Soft x-ray photoemission study of new BiS$_{2}$-layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$

We use core level and valence band soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SXPES) to investigate electronic structure of new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$. Core level spectra of doped samples show a new spectral feature at the lower binding energy side of the Bi 4${f}$ main peak, which may be explained by core-hole screening with metallic states near the Fermi level ($E_{\rm F}$). Experimental electronic structure and its ${x}$ dependence (higher binding energy shift of the valence band as well as appearance of new states near $E_{\rm F}$ having dominant Bi 6${p}$ character) were found to be consistent with the predictions of band structure calculations in general. Noticeable deviation of the spectral shape of the states near $E_{\rm F}$ from that of calculations might give insight into the interesting physical properties. These results provide first experimental electronic structure of the new BiS$_{2}$ layered superconductors.

Thickness-dependent ferromagnetic metal to paramagnetic insulator transition in La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ thin films studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Metallic transition-metal oxides undergo a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) as the film thickness decreases across a ritical thickness of several monolayers (MLs), but its driving mechanism remains controversial. We have studied the thickness-dependent MIT of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. As the film thickness was decreased across the critical thickness of the MIT (6-8 ML), a gradual decrease of the ferromagnetic signals and a concomitant increase of paramagnetic signals were observed, while the Mn valence abruptly decreased towards Mn$^{3+}$. These observations suggest that the ferromagnetic phase gradually and most likely inhomogeneously turns into the paramagnetic phase and both phases abruptly become insulating at the critical thickness.

Epitaxially Stabilized EuMoO3: A New Itinerant Ferromagnet

Synthesizing metastable phase often opens new functions in materials but is a challenging topic. Thin film techniques have advantages to form materials which do not exist in nature since nonequilibrium processes are frequently utilized. In this study, we successfully synthesize epitaxially stabilized new compound of perovskite Eu2+Mo4+O3 as a thin film form by a pulsed laser deposition. Analogous perovskite SrMoO3 is a highly conducting paramagnetic material, but Eu2+ and Mo4+ are not compatible in equilibrium and previous study found more stable pyrochlore Eu23+Mo24+O7 prefers to form. By using isostructural perovskite substrates, the gain of the interface energy between the film and the substrate stabilizes the matastable EuMoO3 phase. This compound exhibits high conductivity and large magnetic moment, originating from Mo 4d2 electrons and Eu 4f7 electrons, respectively. Our result indi-cates the epitaxial stabilization is effective not only to stabilize crystallographic structures but also to from a new compound which contains unstable combinations of ionic valences in bulk form.
