CP and T Trajectory Diagrams for a Unified Graphical Representation of Neutrino Oscillations

Recently the CP trajectory diagram was introduced to demonstrate the difference between the intrinsic CP violating effects to those induced by matter for neutrino oscillation. In this paper we introduce the T trajectory diagram. In these diagrams the probability for a given oscillation process is plotted versus the probability for the CP- or the T-conjugate processes, which forms an ellipse as the CP or T violating phase is varied. Since the CP and the T conjugate processes are related by CPT symmetry, even in the presence of matter, these two trajectory diagrams are closely related with each other and form a unified description of neutrino oscillations in matter.

Method for Determination of $|U_{e3}|$ in Neutrino Oscillation Appearance Experiments

We point out that determination of the MNS matrix element |U_{e3}| = s_{13} in long-baseline ν_μ \to ν_e neutrino oscillation experiments suffers from large intrinsic uncertainty due to the unknown CP violating phase δand sign of Δm^2_{13}. We propose a new strategy for accurate determination of $θ_{13}$; tune the beam energy at the oscillation maximum and do the measurement both in neutrino and antineutrino channels. We show that it automatically resolves the problem of parameter ambiguities which involves δ, θ_{13}, and the sign of Δm^2_{13}.

CERN to Gran Sasso; An ideal distance for superbeam?

We use the CP trajectory diagram as a tool for pictorial representation of the genuine CP and the matter effects to explore the possibility of an in situ simultaneous measurement of δand the sign of Δm^2_{13}. We end up with a low-energy conventional superbeam experiment with a megaton-class water Cherenkov detector and baseline length of about 700 km. A picturesque description of the combined ambiguity which may arise in simultaneous determination of θ_{13} and the above two quantities is given in terms of CP trajectory diagram.

CP Trajectory Diagram; A tool for pictorial representation of CP and matter effects in neutrino oscillations

We introduce "CP trajectory diagram in bi-probability space" as a powerful tool for pictorial representation of the genuine CP and the matter effects in neutrino oscillations. Existence of the correlated ambiguity in a determination of CP violating phase δand the sign of Δm^2_{13} is uncovered. Principles of tuning beam energy for a given baseline distance are proposed to resolve the ambiguity and to maximize the CP-odd effect. We finally point out, quite contrary to what is usually believed, that the ambiguity may be resolved with 50 % chance in the super-JHF experiment despite its relatively short baseline of 300 km.

Exploring Neutrino Mixing with Low Energy Superbeams

We explore as clearly as possible the features of neutrino oscillation which are relevant for measurements of the CP violating Kobayashi-Maskawa phase delta and the sign of Δm^2_{13}. We focus on the so called low-energy option and discuss principles for optimizing experimental parameters to measure these two quantities simultaneously. Toward the goal, we first formulate a method for obtaining a bird-eye view of the phenomenon of neutrino oscillation by introducing a new powerful tool called the ``CP trajectory diagram in bi-probability space''. It allows us to represent pictorially the three effects separately in a single diagram; effect from genuine CP violation due to the sin delta term, effect from the CP conserving cos delta term, and the fake CP violating effect due to earth matter. By using the CP trajectory diagram we observe that there is a two-fold ambiguity in the determination of delta which is related with the sign of Delta m^2_{13}. We then address the question of what are the promising options for conceptual design of experiments at low energies which looks for CP violation and at the same time would resolve the two-fold ambiguity. We point out that a version with distance of about 700 km, with a megaton class water Cherenkov detector gives an optimal design which allows simultaneous determination of delta and the sign of Delta m^2_{13} {\it in situ}. We also point out that there is a possibility that the similar {\it in situ} measurement of both quantities can be done at the Phase II of JHF experiment with much shorter baseline, under the assumption of nature's kind setting of delta to the region of sin{delta} \cdot Delta m^2_{13} < 0. A technique of running at high (sim 1 GeV) and low (sim 0.5 GeV) beam energies is proposed as a method for better identification of delta.

Inverted Hierarchy of Neutrino Masses Disfavored by Supernova 1987A

We discuss the flavor conversion of supernova neutrinos in the three-flavor mixing scheme of neutrinos. We point out that by neutrino observation from supernova one can discriminate the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses from the normal one if s_{13}^2 \gsim a few \times 10^{-4}, irrespective of which oscillation solution to the solar neutrino problem is realized in nature. We perform an analysis of data of SN1987A and obtain a strong indication that the inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored unless s_{13}^2 \lsim a few \times 10^{-4}.

Measuring Leptonic CP Violation by Low Energy Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

We uncover an interesting phenomenon that neutrino flavor transformation in slowly varying matter density imitates almost exactly that of vacuum neutrino oscillation under suitably chosen experimental parameters. It allows us to have relatively large CP violating measure ΔP \equiv P(ν_μ \to ν_e) - P(\barν_μ \to \barν_e) which is essentially free from matter effect contamination. We utilize this phenomenon to design a low-energy long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment to measure the leptonic CP violating phase.

Measuring CP violation by low-energy medium-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments

In this talk we discuss the possibility to measure CP violation in neutrino oscillation experiments using the neutrino beam with energy which is lower (E_ν\gsim 100 MeV) than the one usually considered (typically > 1 GeV) in accelerator experiments. The advantage of using such lower energy neutrino beam is that despite the smaller detection cross sections, the effect of CP violation is larger and the optimal length of baseline can be rather short, 30-50 km, being free from matter effect contamination.

Status of the solutions to neutrino anomalies based on non-standard neutrino interactions

We review the status of the solutions to neutrino anomalies by flavor-changing as well as flavor-diagonal neutrino interactions. While it is difficult to explain the atmospheric neutrino data the solar neutrino data can be well accounted for by the massless neutrino oscillation induced by such non-standard neutrino interactions. We also discuss the possibility to test such kind of interactions by the future neutrino oscillation experiments at neutrino factories.

Model Independent Analysis of the Solar Neutrino Data

We perform an updated model-independent analysis using all the latest solar neutrino data, including the one coming from remarkably high statistics SuperKamiokande experiment. We confirm that the astrophysical solutions to the solar neutrino problem are extremely disfavored. We also present a new way of illuminating the suppression pattern of various solar neutrino flux, which indicates that the strong suppression of $^{7}$Be neutrinos is no more true once the neutrino flavor conversion is taken into account.

Current Status of the Solar Neutrino Problem with Super-Kamiokande

We perform an updated model-independent analysis using the latest solar neutrino data obtained by $^{37}$Cl and $^{71}$Ga radiochemical experiments, and most notably by a large water-Cherenkov detector SuperKamiokande with their 504 days of data taking. We confirm that the astrophysical solutions to the solar neutrino problem are extremely disfavored by the data and a low-temperature modification of the standard solar model is excluded by more than 5 $σ$. We also propose a new way of illuminating the suppression pattern of various solar neutrino flux without invoking detailed flavor conversion mechanisms. It indicates that the strong suppression of $^7$Be neutrinos is no more true when the neutrino flavor conversion is taken into account.

CP Violation vs. Matter Effect in Long-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

We investigate, within the framework of three generations of neutrinos, the effects of CP violation in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We aim at illuminating the global feature of the interplay between genuine effect due to the CP violating phase and a fake one due to the earth matter effect. To this goal, we develop a formalism based on the adiabatic approximation and perturbative treatment of the matter effect which allows us to obtain approximate analytic expressions of the oscillation probabilities. We present an order-of-magnitude estimation and a detailed numerical computation of the absolute and the relative magnitudes of the CP violations under the mass hierarchy suggested by the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and the cosmological dark matter. We find that the genuine CP violating effect is at most \sim 1%, and the matter effect dominates over the intrinsic CP violation only in a region of parameters where the oscillation probability of $ν_μ\toν_e$ is large.

How to Measure CP Violation in Neutrino Oscillation Experiments?

We propose a new method for measuring CP violation in neutrino oscillation experiments. The idea is to isolate the term due to the CP-violating phase out of the oscillation probability by taking difference between yields of two (or three) detectors at path-lengths $L = 250 (\frac{E}{1.35 {GeV}}) (\frac{Δm^2}{10^{-2}{eV}^2})^{-1} {km}$ and at $L/3$ (and also at $2L/3$ in the case of three detectors). We use possible hierarchies in neutrino masses suggested by the astrophysical and the cosmological observations to motivate the idea and to examine how the method works.

Testing the Principle of Equivalence by Solar Neutrinos

We discuss the possibility of testing the principle of equivalence with solar neutrinos. If there exists a violation of the equivalence principle quarks and leptons with different flavors may not universally couple with gravity. The method we discuss employs a quantum mechanical phenomenon of neutrino oscillation to probe into the non-universality of the gravitational couplings of neutrinos. We develop an appropriate formalism to deal with neutrino propagation under the weak gravitational fields of the sun in the presence of the flavor mixing. We point out that solar neutrino observation by the next generation water Cherenkov detectors can improve the existing bound on violation of the equivalence principle by 3-4 orders of magnitude if the nonadiabatic Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein mechanism is the solution to the solar neutrino problem.
