Investigating the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Na$_x$Fe$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_2$ Cathode Materials with X-ray Compton Scattering

We discuss electronic and magnetic properties of Na$_x$Fe$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_2$, a promising Na-ion battery cathode material. Using x-ray Compton scattering, SQUID magnetometry, and density-functional-theory based modeling, we probe how electrons and spins evolve during sodiation. By comparing Compton profiles of sodiated and desodiated samples, we show that oxygen 2$p$ orbitals drive the redox process, while transition-metal 3$d$ electrons become more delocalized, explaining the metallic phase at $x=2/3$. These profile differences define a quantitative descriptor for the sodiation range associated with improved conductivity. Electron holes on oxygen, reflected in oxygen magnetization, confirm the important role of oxygen in the electrochemical activity of the cathode.

Probing the semiconductor-to-dirac semimetal transition in Na-Sb-Bi alloys with x-ray Compton scattering

We discuss electron redistribution during the semiconductor-to-Dirac semimetal transition in Na-Sb-Bi alloys using x-ray Compton scattering experiments combined with first-principles electronic structure modeling. A robust signature of the semiconductor-to-Dirac semimetal transition is identified in the spherically averaged Compton profile. We demonstrate how the number of electrons involved in this transition can be estimated to provide a novel descriptor for quantifying the strength of spin-orbit coupling responsible for driving the transition. The associated theoretical deviation of the Born charge of Na in Na$_3$Bi from the expected ionic charge of +1 is found to be consistent with the corresponding experimental value of about 10%. Our study also shows the sensitivity of the Compton scattering technique toward capturing the spillover of Bi 6p relativistic states onto Na sites.

Compton scattering study of strong orbital delocalization in a LiNiO$_2$ cathode

Cobalt is used in Li-ion batteries, but it is expensive and could be replaced by nickel to deliver better performance at a lower cost. With this motivation, we discuss how the character of redox orbitals of LiNiO$_2$ can be ascertained through x-ray Compton scattering measurements combined with parallel first-principles simulations. Our analysis reveals the nature of hole states in Li-doped NiO resulting from the hybridization of O 2$p$ and Ni 3$d$ orbitals. Our study also gives insight into the ferromagnetic ground state and provides a pathway toward the rational design of next-generation battery materials.

Redox oscillations in 18650-type lithium-ion cell revealed by in operando Compton scattering imaging

Compton scattering imaging using high-energy synchrotron x-rays allows the visualization of the spatio-temporal lithiation state in lithium-ion batteries probed in-operando. Here, we apply this imaging technique to the commercial 18650-type cylindrical lithium-ion battery. Our analysis of the lineshapes of the Compton scattering spectra taken from different electrode layers reveals the emergence of inhomogeneous lithiation patterns during the charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, these patterns exhibit oscillations in time where the dominant period corresponds to the time scale of the charging curve.

Identification of ferrimagnetic orbitals preventing spinel degradation by charge ordering in Li$_x$Mn$_2$O$_4$

Spinel Li$_x$Mn$_2$O$_4$ is a key cathode material that is used extensively in commercial Li-ion batteries. A challenge with this material has been that the capacity of the battery fades with cycling, an effect that can be traced to the presence of an anti-ferromagnetic insulator phase in the fully lithiated LiMn$_2$O$_4$ (LMO) and the associated charge disproportionation that drives distortions of the MnO$_6$ octahedra. Here, by combining x-ray magnetic Compton scattering experiments with parallel first-principles computations, we show that the anti-ferromagnetic phase of LMO is surrounded by a robust ferrimagnetic metallic phase, which becomes stable when even a small amount of Li is removed from or added to the charge-ordered LMO. In this surprising ferrimagnetic state, charge-ordering and octahedral distortions are found to be strongly suppressed. We identify the nature of the ferrimagnetic orbitals involved through theoretical and experimental analyses of the magnetic Compton scattering spectra.

In-operando quantitation of Li concentration for commercial Li-ion rechargeable battery using high-energy X-ray Compton scattering

Compton scattering is one of the promising probe to quantitate of the Li under in-operando condition, since high-energy X-rays which have high penetration power into the materials are used as incident beam and Compton scattered energy spectrum have specific line-shape by the elements. We develop in-operando quantitation method of Li composition in the electrodes by using line-shape (Sparameter) analysis of Compton scattered energy spectrum. In this study, we apply S-parameter analysis to commercial coin cell Li-ion rechargeable battery and obtain the variation of S-parameters during charge/discharge cycle at positive and negative electrodes. By using calibration curves for Li composition in the electrodes, we determine the change of Li composition of positive and negative electrodes through S-parameters, simultaneously.
