A variational Monte Carlo study of exciton condensation

Exciton condensation in a two-band Hubbard model on a square lattice is studied with variational Monte Carlo method. We show that the phase transition from an excitonic insulator to a band insulator is induced by increasing the interband Coulomb interaction. To examine the character of the exciton condensation, the exciton pair amplitudes both in $\bm{k}$-space and in real space are calculated. Using these quantities, we discuss the BCS-BEC crossover within the excitonic insulator phase.

A Scaling Relation for Dangerously Irrelevant Symmetry-Breaking Fields

We propose a scaling relation for critical phenomena in which a symmetry-breaking field is dengerously irrelevant. We confirm its validity on the 6-state clock model in three and four dimensions by numerical simulation. In doing so, we point out the problem in the previously-used order parameter, and present an alternative evidence based on the mass-dependent fluctuation.

Ostwald Ripening in Multiple-Bubble Nuclei

The ostwald ripening of bubbles is studied by molecular dynamics simulations involving up to 679 million Lennard-Jones particles. Many bubbles appear after depressurizing a system that is initially maintained in the pure-liquid phase, and the coarsening of bubbles follows. The self-similarity of the bubble-size distribution function predicted by Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory is directly confirmed. The total number of bubbles decreases asymptotically as $t^{-x}$ with scaling exponent $x$. As the initial temperature increases, the exponent changes from $x=3/2$ to $1$, which implies that the growth of bubbles changes from interface-limited (the $t^{1/2}$ law) to diffusion-limited (the $t^{1/3}$ law) growth.

Theoretical study of insulating mechanism in multi-orbital Hubbard models with a large spin-orbit coupling: Slater versus Mott scenario in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

To examine the insulating mechanism of 5$d$ transition metal oxide Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, we study the ground state properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with a large relativistic spin-orbit coupling on a square lattice. Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we find that the insulating state appearing in the ground state phase diagram for one hole per site varies from a weakly correlated to a strongly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) state with increasing Coulomb interactions. This crossover is characterized by the different energy gain mechanisms of the AF insulating state, i.e., from an interaction-energy driven Slater-type insulator to a band-energy driven Mott-type insulator with increasing Coulomb interactions. Our calculations reveal that Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is a "moderately correlated" AF insulator located in the intermediate coupling region between a Slater-type and a Mott-type insulators.

Nonlinear Photoluminescence Properties of Trions in Hole-doped Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes

We studied the excitation density dependence of photoluminescence (PL) spectra of excitons and trions (charged excitons) in hole-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes. We found that the PL intensity of trions exhibited a strong nonlinear saturation behavior as the excitation density increased, whereas that of excitons exhibited a weak sublinear behavior. The strong PL saturation of trions is attributed to depletion of doped holes that are captured by excitons in the formation processes. Moreover, the effective radiative lifetime of a trion was evaluated to be approximately 20 ns.

Possibility of Deconfined Criticality in SU(N) Heisenberg Models at Small N

To examine the validity of the scenario of the deconfined critical phenomena, we carry out a quantum Monte Carlo simulation for the SU($N$) generalization of the Heisenberg model with four-body and six-body interactions. The quantum phase transition between the SU($N$) Néel and valence-bond solid phases is characterized for $N=2,3,$ and $4$ on the square and honeycomb lattices. While finite-size scaling analysis works well up to the maximum lattice size ($L=256$) and indicates the continuous nature of the phase transition, a clear systematic change towards the first-order transition is observed in the estimates of the critical exponent $y \equiv 1/ν$ as the system size increases. We also confirm the relevance of a squared valence-bond solid field $Ψ^2$ for the SU(3) model.

Huge-scale Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Multibubble Nuclei

We have developed molecular dynamics codes for a short-range interaction potential that adopt both the flat-MPI and MPI/OpenMP hybrid parallelizations on the basis of a full domain decomposition strategy. Benchmark simulations involving up to 38.4 billion Lennard-Jones particles were performed on PRIMEHPC FX10, consisting of 4800 SPARC64 IXfx 1.848 GHz processors, at the Information Technology Center of the University of Tokyo, and a performance of 193 teraflops was achieved, which corresponds to a 17.0% execution efficiency. Cavitation processes were also simulated on PRIMEHPC FX10 and SGI Altix ICE 8400EX at the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Tokyo, which involved 1.45 billion and 22.9 million particles, respectively. Ostwald-like ripening was observed after the multibubble nuclei. Our results demonstrate that direct simulations of multiscale phenomena involving phase transitions from the atomic scale are possible and that the molecular dynamics method is a promising method that can be applied to petascale computers.

Difficult Sudoku Puzzles Created by Replica Exchange Monte Carlo Method

An algorithm to create difficult Sudoku puzzles is proposed. An Ising spin-glass like Hamiltonian describing difficulty of puzzles is defined, and difficult puzzles are created by minimizing the energy of the Hamiltonian. We adopt the replica exchange Monte Carlo method with simultaneous temperature adjustments to search lower energy states efficiently, and we succeed in creating a puzzle which is the world hardest ever created in our definition, to our best knowledge. (Added on Mar. 11, the created puzzle can be solved easily by hand. Our definition of the difficulty is inappropriate.)

Monte Carlo study of an unconventional superconducting phase in Ir-oxide J_{eff}=1/2 Mott insulators induced by carrier doping

Based on a microscopic theoretical study, we show that novel superconductivity is induced by carrier doping in layered perovskite Ir oxides where a strong spin-orbit coupling causes an effective total angular momentum J_{eff}=1/2 Mott insulator. Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we find an unconventional superconducting state in the ground state phase diagram of a t_{2g} three-orbital Hubbard model on the square lattice. This superconducting state is characterized by a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave "pseudospin singlet" formed by the J_{eff}=1/2 Kramers doublet, which thus contains inter-orbital as well as both singlet and triplet components of t_{2g} electrons. The superconducting state is found stable only by electron doping, but not by hole doping, for the case of carrier doped Sr_2IrO_4. We also study an effective single-orbital Hubbard model to discuss the similarities to high-T_c cuprate superconductors and the multi-orbital effects.

Usefulness of an equal-probability assumption for out-of-equilibrium states: a master equation approach

We examine the effectiveness of assuming an equal probability for states far from equilibrium. For this aim, we propose a method to construct a master equation for extensive variables describing non-stationary nonequilibrium dynamics. The key point of the method is the assumption that transient states are equivalent to the equilibrium state that has the same extensive variables, i.e., an equal probability holds for microscopic states in nonequilibrium. We demonstrate an application of this method to the critical relaxation of the two-dimensional Potts model by Monte Carlo simulations. While the one-variable description, which is adequate for equilibrium, yields relaxation dynamics that are very fast, redundant two-variable description well reproduces the true dynamics quantitatively. These results suggest that some class of the nonequilibrium state can be described with a small extension of degrees of freedom, which may lead to an alternative way to understand nonequilibrium phenomena.

Concentration Dependence of Rheological Properties of Telechelic Associative Polymer Solutions

We consider concentration dependence of rheological properties of associative telechelic polymer solutions. Experimental results for model telechelic polymer solutions show rather strong concentration dependence of rheological properties. For solutions with relatively high concentrations, linear viscoelasticity deviates from the single Maxwell behavior. The concentration dependence of characteristic relaxation time and moduli is different in high and low concentration cases. These results suggest that there are two different concentration regimes. We expect that densely connected (well percolated) networks are formed in high-concentration solutions, whereas sparsely connected (weakly percolated) networks are formed in low-concentration solutions. We propose single chain type transient network models to explain experimental results. Our models incorporate the spatial correlation effect of micellar cores and average number of elastically active chains per micellar core (the network functionality). Our models can reproduce non-single Maxwellian relaxation and nonlinear rheological behavior such as the shear thickening and thinning. They are qualitatively consistent with experimental results. In our models, the linear rheological behavior is mainly attributable to the difference of network structures (functionalities). The nonlinear rheological behavior is attributable to the nonlinear flow rate dependence of the spatial correlation of micellar core positions.

A Conjecture on the Collatz-Kakutani Path Length for the Mersenne Primes

We present here a new conjecture for the nature of the Mersenne prime numbers by connecting it with the Collatz-Kakutani problem. By introducing a natural path length on the basis of the Collatz-Kakutani tree, we conjecture that this path length of a Mersenne prime from the root of the Collatz-Kakutani tree is approximately proportional to the index of the Mersenne prime. We also discuss difference of behaviors between Mersenne numbers and Mersenne primes.

Phase diagram and universality of the Lennard-Jones gas-liquid system

The gas-liquid phase transition of the three-dimensional Lennard-Jones particles system is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The gas and liquid densities in the coexisting state are determined with high accuracy. The critical point is determined by the block density analysis of the Binder parameter with the aid of the law of rectilinear diameter. From the critical behavior of the gas-liquid coexsisting density, the critical exponent of the order parameter is estimated to be $β= 0.3285(7)$. Surface tension is estimated from interface broadening behavior due to capillary waves. From the critical behavior of the surface tension, the critical exponent of the correlation length is estimated to be $ν= 0.63 (4)$. The obtained values of $β$ and $ν$ are consistent with those of the Ising universality class.

Evaporation/condensation transition of the two dimensional Potts model in microcanonical ensemble

Evaporation/condensation transition of the Potts model on square lattice is numerically investigated by the Wang-Landau sampling method. Intrinsically system size dependent discrete transition between supersaturation state and phase-separation state is observed in the microcanonical ensemble by changing constrained internal energy. We calculate the microcanonical temperature, as a derivative of microcanonical entropy, and condensation ratio, and perform a finite size scaling of them to indicate clear tendency of numerical data to converge to the infinite size limit predicted by phenomenological theory for the isotherm lattice gas model.

Microscopic Study of Electronic and Magnetic Properties for Ir Oxide

The exact diagonalization and the variational cluster approximation (VCA) are used to study the nature of a novel Mott insulator induced by a strong spin-orbit coupling for a two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model consisting of the $t_{2g}$ manifold of $5d$ orbitals. To characterize the ground state, we introduce a local Kramer's doublet which can represent a state with effective angular momentum $J_{\rm eff}=|{\bm S}-{\bm L}|=1/2$ as well as spin $S=1/2$. Our systematic study of the pseudo-spin structure factor defined by the Kramer's doublet shows that the $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ Mott insulator is smoothly connected to the $S=1/2$ Mott insulator. Using the Kramer's doublet as a variational state for the VCA, we examine the one-particle excitations for the Mott insulating phase. These results are compared with recent experiments on Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Rotating Nanodroplets: Finite-size Effects and Nonequilibrium Deformation

Noneqiuilibrium dynamics of rotating droplets are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Small deviations from the theoretical prediction are observed when the size of a droplet is small, and the deviations become smaller as the size of the droplet increases. The characteristic timescale of the deformation is observed, and we find (i) the deformation timescale is almost independent of the rotating velocity with for small frequency and (ii) the deformation timescale becomes shorter as temperature increases. A simple model is proposed to explain the deformation dynamics of droplets.

Anisotropic Mobility Model for Polymers under Shear and its Linear Response Functions

We propose a simple dynamic model of polymers under shear with an anisotropic mobility tensor. We calculate the shear viscosity, the rheo-dielectric response function, and the parallel relaxation modulus under shear flow deduced from our model. We utilize recently developed linear response theories for nonequilibrium systems to calculate linear response functions. Our results are qualitatively consistent with experimental results. We show that our anisotropic mobility model can reproduce essential dynamical nature of polymers under shear qualitatively. We compare our model with other models or theories such as the convective constraint release model or nonequilibrium linear response theories.

Static and dynamical aspects of the metastable states of first order transition systems

We numerically study the metastable states of the 2d Potts model. Both of equilibrium and relaxation properties are investigated focusing on the finite size effect. The former is investigated by finding the free energy extremal point by the Wang-Landau sampling and the latter is done by observing the Metropolis dynamics after sudden heating. It is explicitly shown that with increasing system size the equilibrium spinodal temperature approaches the bistable temperature in a power-law and the size-dependence of the nucleation dynamics agrees with it. In addition, we perform finite size scaling of the free energy landscape at the bistable point.
