Cumulative distribution functions associated with bubble-nucleation processes in cavitation

Bubble-nucleation processes of a Lennard-Jones liquid are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Waiting time, which is the lifetime of a superheated liquid, is determined for several system sizes, and the apparent finite-size effect of the nucleation rate is observed. From the cumulative distribution function of the nucleation events, the bubble-nucleation process is found to be not a simple Poisson process but a Poisson process with an additional relaxation time. The parameters of the exponential distribution associated with the process are determined by taking the relaxation time into account, and the apparent finite-size effect is removed. These results imply that the use of the arithmetic mean of the waiting time until a bubble grows to the critical size leads to an incorrect estimation of the nucleation rate.

Microscopic study of spin-orbit-induced Mott insulator in Ir oxides

Motivated by recent experiments of a novel 5$d$ Mott insulator in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, we have studied the two-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model with a spin-orbit coupling $λ$. The variational Monte Carlo method is used to obtain the ground state phase diagram with varying a on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ as well as $λ$. It is found that the transition from a paramagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator occurs at a finite $U=U_{\mathrm{MI}}$, which is greatly reduced by a large $λ$, characteristic of 5$d$ electrons, and leads to the "spin-orbit-induced" Mott insulator. It is also found that the Hund's coupling induces the anisotropic spin exchange and stabilizes the in-plane AF order. We have further studied the one-particle excitations using the variational cluster approximation, and revealed the internal electronic structure of this novel Mott insulator. These findings are in agreement with experimental observations on Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, and qualitatively different from those of extensively studied 3$d$ Mott insulators.

Dynamical Study of Polydisperse Hard-Sphere System

We study the interplay between the fluid-crystal transition and the glass transition of elastic sphere system with polydispersity using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the end point of the crystal-fluid transition line, which corresponds to the critical polydispersity above which the crystal state is unstable, is on the glass transition line. This means that crystal and fluid states at the melting point becomes less distinguishable as polydispersity increases and finally they become identical state, i.e., marginal glass state, at critical polydispersity.

Crossover from dilute-Kondo system to heavy-fermion system

Ground state properties of a Kondo lattice model with random configuration of $f$ electrons are investigated with a variational Monte Carlo method. We show that the crossover from a dilute-Kondo system to a heavy-fermion system occurs when the density of $c$ and $f$ electrons ($n_c$, $n_f$) become comparable, $n_f\lesssim n_c$. In the heavy-fermion region, the correlation between $f$ electrons is strong and the $f$ electrons themselves greatly contribute to the screening of other $f$-electron moments. We propose that the character of Kondo screening changes from "individual" to "collective" across the crossover.

Efficiency of Rejection-Free Methods for Dynamic Monte Carlo Studies of Off-lattice Interacting Particles

We calculate the efficiency of a rejection-free dynamic Monte Carlo method for $d$-dimensional off-lattice homogeneous particles interacting through a repulsive power-law potential $r^{-p}$. Theoretically we find the algorithmic efficiency in the limit of low temperatures and/or high densities is asymptotically proportional to $ρ^{\tfrac{p+2}{2}}T^{-\tfrac{d}{2}}$ with the particle density $ρ$ and the temperature $T$. Dynamic Monte Carlo simulations are performed in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional systems with different powers $p$, and the results agree with the theoretical predictions.

Mapping functions and critical behavior of percolation on rectangular domains

The existence probability $E_p$ and the percolation probability $P$ of the bond percolation on rectangular domains with different aspect ratios $R$ are studied via the mapping functions between systems with different aspect ratios. The superscaling behavior of $E_p$ and $P$ for such systems with exponents $a$ and $b$, respectively, found by Watanabe, Yukawa, Ito, and Hu in [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{93}, 190601 (2004)] can be understood from the lower order approximation of the mapping functions $f_R$ and $g_R$ for $E_p$ and $P$, respectively; the exponents $a$ and $b$ can be obtained from numerically determined mapping functions $f_R$ and $g_R$, respectively.

Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in the Periodic Anderson Model

We study ground state properties of periodic Anderson model in a two-dimensional square lattice with variational Monte Carlo method. It is shown that there are two different types of quantum phase transition: a conventional antiferromagnetic transition and a Fermi-surface reconstruction which accompanies a change of topology of the Fermi surface. The former is induced by a simple back-folding of the Fermi surface while the latter is induced by localization of $f$ electrons. The mechanism of these transitions and the relation to the recent experiments on Fermi surface are discussed in detail.

Markovian Approximation for the Nosé--Hoover method and H-theorem

A Langevin equation with state-dependent random force is considered. When the Helmholtz free energy is a nonincreasing function of time (the H-theorem), a generalized Einstein relation is obtained. A stochastic process of the Nosé--Hoover method is discussed on the basis of the Markovian approximation. It is found that the generalized Einstein relation holds for the Fokker--Planck equation associated with the stochastic Nosé--Hoover equation. The present result indicates that the Nosé--Hoover dynamics coarse-grained with time satisfies the H-theorem and therefore works as a heat bath.

Non-equilibrium Relaxation Analysis on Two-dimensional Melting

The melting transition in the hard-disk system is considered. Non-equilibrium relaxation analysis of the six-fold bond-orientational order parameter has been carried out. The critical point between the hexatic and the fluid phase is determined on the basis of the dynamic scaling hypothesis. The value of the critical exponent $η$ is determined from the fluctuation of the order parameter at the criticality as $η= 0.25(2)$ which is consistent with the prediction by the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction without Breakdown of Kondo Screening at Quantum Critical Point

Motivated by recent Hall-effect experiment in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, we study ground state properties of a Kondo lattice model in a two-dimensional square lattice using variational Monte Carlo method. We show that there are two types of phase transition, antiferromagnetic transition and topological one (Fermi surface reconstruction). In a wide region of parameters, these two transitions occur simultaneously without the breakdown of Kondo screening, accompanied by a discontinuous change of the Hall coefficient. This result is consistent with the experiment and gives a novel theoretical picture for the quantum critical point in heavy fermion systems.

Ergodicity of Thermostat Family of Nosé--Hoover type

One-variable thermostats are studied as a generalization of the Nosé--Hoover method which is aimed to achieve Gibbs' canonical distribution with conserving the time-reversibility. A condition for equations of motion for the system with the thermostats is derived in the form of a partial differential equation. Solutions of this equation construct a family of thermostats including the Nosé--Hoover method as the minimal solution. It is shown that the one-variable thermostat coupled with the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator loses its ergodicity with large enough relaxation time. The present result suggests that multi-variable thermostats are required to assure the ergodicity and to work as heatbath.

Ergodicity of the Nosé-Hoover method

Ergodicity of the systems with Nosé-Hoover thermostat are studied. The dynamics of the heatbath variables are investigated and they can be periodic when the system has quick oscillation. The periodic behaviour of them causes the system to lose its ergodicity. The kinetic-moments method is also studied, and the heatbath variables in this method are found to be chaotic. The chaotic behaviour makes the whole system ergodic.

Positional Order and Diffusion Processes in Particle Systems

Nonequilibrium behaviors of positional order are discussed based on diffusion processes in particle systems. With the cumulant expansion method up to the second order, we obtain a relation between the positional order parameter $Ψ$ and the mean square displacement $M$ to be $Ψ\sim \exp(- {\bf K}^2 M /2d)$ with a reciprocal vector ${\bf K}$ and the dimension of the system $d$. On the basis of the relation, the behavior of positional order is predicted to be $Ψ\sim \exp(-{\bf K}^2Dt)$ when the system involves normal diffusion with a diffusion constant $D$. We also find that a diffusion process with swapping positions of particles contributes to higher orders of the cumulants. The swapping diffusion allows particle to diffuse without destroying the positional order while the normal diffusion destroys it.

Novel Charge Order and Superconductivity in Two-Dimensional Frustrated Lattice at Quarter Filling

Motivated by the various physical properties observed in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X, we study the ground state of extended Hubbard model on two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice at 1/4-filling with variational Monte Carlo method. It is shown that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction enhances the charge fluctuation and it induces the anomalous state such as charge-ordered metallic state and the triplet next-nearest-neighbor $f$-wave superconductivity. We discuss the relation to the real materials and propose the unified view of the family of $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X.

Watanabe and Hu Reply

The article is an reply to comments on the paper [H. Watanabe, S. Yukawa, N. Ito, and C.-K. Hu, Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 93, 19601 (2004)] by G. Pruessner and N. R. Moloney published in [Phys. Rev. Lett. vo. 95, 258901 (2005)]. In this reply, we also point out that the exponents $a$ and $b$ in the 2004 paper just mentioned can be calculated from mapping functions.

Charge order and superconductivity in a two-dimensional triangular lattice at n=2/3

To investigate the possibility of charge order and superconductivity in a doped two-dimensional triangular lattice, we study the extended Hubbard model with variational Monte Carlo method. At n=2/3, a commensurate filling for a triangular lattice, it is shown that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction V induces honeycomb-type charge order and antiferromagnetic spin order at U>10t. We also discuss the possibility of superconductivity induced by charge fluctuation and the relation to the superconductivity in Na_{0.35}CoO_{2}1.3H_{2}O and theta-type organic condoctors.

Triviality of hierarchical O(N) spin model in four dimensions with large N

The renormalization group transformation for the hierarchical O(N) spin model in four dimensions is studied by means of characteristic functions of single-site measures, and convergence of the critical trajectory to the Gaussian fixed point is shown for a sufficiently large N. In the strong coupling regime, the trajectory is controlled by the help of the exactly solved O(\infty) trajectory, while, in the weak coupling regime, convergence to the Gaussian fixed point is shown by power decay of the effective coupling constant.
