First results on the search for the Galactic Center Excess in the sub-GeV band with the emulsion telescope in GRAINE 2023

Please check the paper for full abstract. The Galactic Center Excess (GCE) is an unexplained excess of gamma-ray emission from the Galactic Center. The GRAINE experiment aims to reveal the origin of the GCE using an emulsion gamma-ray telescope with high angular resolutions of 1 deg at 100 MeV and 0.1 deg at 1 GeV. In this study, we search for the GCE in a small region near the Galactic Center using the GRAINE 2023 flight data. In particular, rather than focusing on the spectral peak of the GCE at 2 GeV, we focused on the energy range below 300 MeV, where the spectral differences between the dark matter annihilation and millisecond pulsar scenarios are more pronounced. We searched for the GCE within 1 deg of the Galactic Center in the 75--300 MeV energy range. Although no significant excess was observed, we obtained an upper limit on the GCE flux of 1.70*10^-7 GeV cm^-2 s^-1 at the 2 sigma confidence level for the 1deg-radius ROI centered on the Galactic Center, based on a direct observation of the narrow region around the Galactic Center. This observation requires high angular resolution and represents a unique result from GRAINE. The obtained upper limit is consistent with the GCE flux near the Galactic Center, which was estimated from existing Fermi-LAT observations using a wide ROI and assuming an NFW profile. Although the current upper limit constrains some models, the available statistics are still insufficient to distinguish between the dark matter annihilation and millisecond pulsar scenarios, and both remain consistent with the current results. We also estimated the projected sensitivity of future GRAINE experiments based on the present observation and demonstrated their potential to probe the origin of the GCE by comparing the projected sensitivity with the predicted GCE spectra.

First overnight balloon flight of the GRAINE 2023 emulsion gamma-ray telescope enabled by a large-scale pressure-vessel gondola

The Gamma-Ray Astro Imager with Nuclear Emulsion (GRAINE) project conducts precision observations of sub-GeV--GeV cosmic gamma rays using a balloon-borne nuclear-emulsion telescope with high angular resolution. In GRAINE 2023, a 2.5-m$^{2}$ telescope was flown in the project's first overnight balloon flight, including observation periods for the Vela pulsar and Galactic center region. To operate the telescope under the low-pressure and low-temperature stratospheric environment, the balloon-style pressure-vessel concept was scaled up to a lightweight gondola with an internal length of 4.9 m. A new aluminum-alloy ring structure and a lightweight membranous-shell material, SHL-300MDL, were developed. While the telescope aperture was increased by a factor of 6.6 over GRAINE 2018, the pressure-vessel gondola mass was limited to 179 kg. Ground tests of the completed flight assembly demonstrated a differential pressure above 100 hPa at room temperature and at a mean temperature of $-66.0^{\circ}$C. The payload was launched from Alice Springs, Australia, in April 2023 and achieved a total flight duration of approximately 27 h, including 24.3 h of level flight. Although the upper membranous shell reached approximately $-60^{\circ}$C at night, the vessel internal pressure remained above the required 100 hPa throughout level flight. These results demonstrate that the developed gondola can accommodate a 2.5-m$^{2}$ emulsion gamma-ray telescope and maintain the required pressure during overnight stratospheric flight. Scientific analyses of astrophysical and atmospheric gamma rays, including dedicated analysis of the Galactic center region, are ongoing using the recovered emulsion data. This development provides a technical basis for repeated observations with future large-area GRAINE telescopes.

Abelian dualities and line defect indices for 3d gauge theories

We find matching pairs of the line defect indices for 3d supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories as strong evidence of dualities of the BPS line operators. They lead to novel duality maps of the BPS line operators for $\mathcal{N}\ge 4$ supersymmetric circular and linear quiver gauge theories which can be realized as brane configurations in Type IIB string theory, including SQED, ADHM and ABJM theories.

Kac-Moody algebras from M5-giants

We examine the giant graviton expansions of the Higgs indices for the 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ ADHM theories with $l$ fundamental hypermultiplets. The indices for the M5-brane giant gravitons of wrapping number $m$ appearing in the expansions consist of the contributions that generalize the characters of the W-algebra $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{gl}(m))$ and those which realize the characters of the affine Kac-Moody algebras of type $A_{l-1}$. Also we confirm that the inverse giant graviton expansions of the resulting M5-brane indices consistently reproduce the Higgs indices.

M2-M5 giant graviton expansions

We examine the giant graviton expansions of the Coulomb and Higgs indices for the M2-brane SCFTs to find the closed-form expressions for the indices that encode the spectra of the $1/4$-BPS M5-brane giant gravitons and the $1/3$-BPS orbifold M5-brane giant gravitons. Consequently, we get exact forms of the twisted indices for the 6d $(2,0)$ theories describing a stack of $N$ M5-branes which generalize the unrefined indices. We confirm that they are also beautifully expanded with respect to the indices for the M2-brane giant gravitons which are obtained from the Coulomb and Higgs indices for the M2-brane SCFTs upon the change of variables.

ADHM Wilson line defect indices

The Coulomb and Higgs indices of the 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ ADHM theories can be decorated by line defect operators as the line defect correlators. We obtain exact closed-form expressions and various non-trivial algebraic relations for the correlators of the Wilson lines in the fundamental and (anti)symmetric representations by means of the Hall-Littlewood expansion, the Fermi-gas method and the residue calculation. From the large $N$ limit of the correlators we obtain the single particle gravity indices which are expected to encode the spectra of fluctuation modes on the gravity duals of line operators in M2-brane SCFTs.

Asymptotic degeneracies of M2-brane SCFTs

We study the asymptotic growth of the degeneracy of the BPS local operators with scaling dimension $n/2$ in the three-dimensional superconformal field theories describing $N$ M2-branes. From the large $N$ supersymmetric indices we obtain the asymptotic formulas for degeneracies of the M2-brane SCFTs according to the Meinardus theorem. We observe an intriguing universal $n^{2/3}$ growth of the degeneracies in various theories of M2-brane SCFTs. We also determine the coefficients of $n^{2/3}$ growth as well as further corrections in these theories explicitly.

Spectra of BPS Strings in 6d Supergravity and the Swampland

We explore BPS strings in supergravity theories in six-dimensions and related Swampland Conjectures. We first propose a general modular ansatz for bootstrapping elliptic genera of 2d worldvolume theories on strings in the 6d theories. By employing mirror symmetry on F-theory examples, we explicitly compute the elliptic genera and validate our ansatz. We extend this approach to investigate BPS strings and their spectrum in non-geometric 6d theories which have no known F-theory constructions, and confirm the Swampland conjectures, including the Weak Gravity Conjecture, Distance Conjecture, and Emergent String Conjecture. We also discuss tensionless little strings that emerge near infinite-distance limits of strong gauge coupling in the moduli space of certain special theories.

Seiberg-Witten curves with O7$^\pm$-planes

We construct Seiberg-Witten curves for 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories whose Type IIB 5-brane configuration involves an O7-plane and discuss an intriguing relation between theories with an O7$^+$-plane and those with an O7$^-$-plane and 8 D7-branes. We claim that 5-brane configurations with an O7$^+$-plane can be effectively understood as 5-brane configurations with a set of an O7$^-$-plane and eight D7-branes with some special tuning of their masses such that the D7-branes are frozen at the O7$^-$-plane. We check this equivalence between SU($N$) gauge theory with a symmetric hypermultiplet and SU($N$) gauge theory with an antisymmetric with 8 fundamentals, and also between SO($2N$) gauge theory and Sp($N$) gauge theory with eight fundamentals. We also compute the Seiberg-Witten curves for non-Lagrangian theories with a symmetric hypermultiplet, which includes the local $\mathbb{P}^2$ theory with an adjoint.

Dualities and flavored indices of M2-brane SCFTs

We study various conjectural dual descriptions of a stack of M2-branes in M-theory including ADHM, ABJ(M), BLG, discrete gauge theories and quiver Chern-Simons (CS) theories and propose several new dualities of the M2-brane SCFTs by analyzing flavored supersymmetric indices in detail. The mapping of local operators, Coulomb, Higgs and mixed branch operators as well as global symmetries under the dualities are obtained from the precise matching of the indices. Furthermore, we find closed form expressions for the Coulomb limit of the indices of the $U(N)$ ADHM theory and the dual quiver CS theory for arbitrary $N$ and propose a refined generating function for plane partitions with trace $N$. For the quiver CS theories we also find an infinite-sum expression for the Higgs limit of the indices which is more useful than the original expression.

Exploring the orthosymplectic zoo

We study the Higgs branch of the SCFT limit of 5d SO(6) and SO(8) gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the spinor and vector representations. In the case of SO(6) gauge theories, we contrast the magnetic quivers obtained with those of SU(4) gauge theory with hypermultiplets in the fundamental and second rank antisymmetric representations. Since SU(4) gauge theories admit several different values of the Chern-Simons level, we make some observations about how to distinguish those theories from the brane webs of the SO(6) theories. In the case of SO(8) gauge theories, we use SO(8) triality to propose (naively) inequivalent magnetic quivers, which will turn out to have the same moduli spaces of vacua, at least locally around their most singular loci. We encounter several interesting new phenomena occurring in the magnetic quivers, such as hypermultiplets between neighbouring symplectic gauge nodes and matter in two-index representations of unitary nodes. We also give a prescription for computing the local Coulomb branch Hilbert series for quivers involving bad USp(2) gauge nodes.

Factorised 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ orthosymplectic quivers

We study the moduli space of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic gauge nodes, that fall into exceptional sequences. We find that both the Higgs and Coulomb branches of the moduli space factorise into decoupled sectors. Each decoupled sector is described by a single quiver gauge theory with only unitary gauge nodes. The orthosymplectic quivers serve as magnetic quivers for 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories which can be engineered in type IIB string theories both with and without an O5 plane. We use this point of view to postulate the dual pairs of unitary and orthosymplectic quivers by deriving them as magnetic quivers of the 5d theory. We use this correspondence to conjecture exact highest weight generating functions for the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of the orthosymplectic quivers, and provide tests of these results by directly computing the Hilbert series for the orthosymplectic quivers in a series expansion.

More on topological vertex formalism for 5-brane webs with O5-plane

We propose a concrete form of a vertex function, which we call O-vertex, for the intersection between an O5-plane and a 5-brane in the topological vertex formalism, as an extension of the work of arXiv:1709.01928. Using the O-vertex it is possible to compute the Nekrasov partition functions of 5d theories realized on any 5-brane web diagrams with O5-planes. We apply our proposal to 5-brane webs with an O5-plane and compute the partition functions of pure SO($N$) gauge theories and the pure $G_2$ gauge theory. The obtained results agree with the results known in the literature. We also compute the partition function of the pure SU(3) gauge theory with the Chern-Simons level $9$. At the end we rewrite the O-vertex in a form of a vertex operator.

ABCD of 't Hooft operators

We compute by supersymmetric localization the expectation values of half-BPS 't Hooft line operators in $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(N)$, $SO(N)$ and $USp(N)$ gauge theories on $S^1 \times \mathbb{R}^3$ with an $Ω$-deformation. We evaluate the non-perturbative contributions due to monopole screening by calculating the supersymmetric indices of the corresponding supersymmetric quantum mechanics, which we obtain by realizing the gauge theories and the 't Hooft operators using branes and orientifolds in type II string theories.

6d/5d exceptional gauge theories from web diagrams

We construct novel web diagrams with a trivalent or quadrivalent gluing for various 6d/5d theories from certain Higgsings of 6d conformal matter theories on a circle. The theories realized on the web diagrams include 5d Kaluza-Klein theories from circle compactifications of the 6d $G_2$ gauge theory with 4 flavors, the 6d $F_4$ gauge theory with 3 flavors, the 6d $E_6$ gauge theory with 4 flavors and the 6d $E_7$ gauge theory with 3 flavors. The Higgsings also give rise to 5d Kaluza-Klein theories from twisted compactifications of 6d theories including the 5d pure SU(3) gauge theory with the Chern-Simons level 9 and the 5d pure SU(4) gauge theory with the Chern-Simons level 8. We also compute the Nekrasov partition functions of the theories by applying the topological vertex formalism to the newly obtained web diagrams.

Five-brane webs, Higgs branches and unitary/orthosymplectic magnetic quivers

We study the Higgs branch of 5d superconformal theories engineered from brane webs with orientifold five-planes. We propose a generalization of the rules to derive magnetic quivers from brane webs pioneered in arXiv:2004.04082, by analyzing theories that can be described with a brane web with and without O5 planes. Our proposed magnetic quivers include novel features, such as hypermultiplets transforming in the fundamental-fundamental representation of two gauge nodes, antisymmetric matter, and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge nodes. We test our results by computing the Coulomb and Higgs branch Hilbert series of the magnetic quivers obtained from the two distinct constructions and find agreement in all cases.

Complete prepotential for 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories

For any 5d ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal field theory, we propose a "complete" prepotential which reduces to the perturbative prepotential for any of its possible gauge theory realizations, manifests its global symmetry when written in terms of the invariant Coulomb branch parameters, and is valid for the whole parameter region. As concrete examples, we consider $SU(2)$ gauge theories with up to 7 flavors, $Sp(2)$ gauge theories with up to 9 flavors, and $Sp(2)$ gauge theories with 1 antisymmetric tensor and up to 7 flavors, as well as their dual gauge theories.

Wall-crossing and operator ordering for 't Hooft operators in N=2 gauge theories

We study half-BPS 't Hooft line operators in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(N)$ gauge theories on $S^1\times \mathbb{R}^3$ with an $Ω$-deformation. The recently proposed brane construction of 't Hooft operators shows that non-perturbative contributions to their correlator are identified with the Witten indices of quiver supersymmetric quantum mechanics. For the products of minimal 't Hooft operators, a chamber in the space of Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters in the quantum mechanics corresponds to an ordering of the operators inserted along a line. These considerations lead us to conjecture that the Witten indices can be read off from the Moyal products of the expectation values of the minimal 't Hooft operators, and also that wall-crossing occurs in the quantum mechanics only when the ordering of the operators changes. We confirm the conjectures by explicitly computing the Witten indices for the products of two and three minimal 't Hooft operators in all possible chambers.
