An $\rm Hα$ Imaging Survey of the Low Surface Brightness Galaxies Selected from the Spring Sky Region of the 40% ALFALFA HI Survey

We present a narrow $\rm Hα$-band imaging survey of 357 low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) that are selected from the spring sky region of the 40% Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) HI Survey. All the $\rm Hα$ images are obtained from the 2.16 m telescope, operated by Xinglong Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. We provide the $\rm Hα$ fluxes and derive the global star formation rates (SFRs) of LSBGs after the Galactic extinction, internal extinction, and [NII] contamination correction. Comparing to normal star-forming galaxies, LSBGs have a similar distribution in the HI surface density ($\rm Σ_{HI}$), but their SFRs and star formation surface density ($\rm Σ_{SFR}$) are much lower. Our results show that the gas-rich LSBGs selected from the ALFALFA survey obviously deviate from the Kennicutt-Schmidt law, in the relation between the star formation surface density ($\rm Σ_{SFR}$) and the gas surface density ($\rm Σ_{gas}$). However, they follow the extended Schmidt law well when taking the stellar mass of the galaxy into consideration.

A Systematic Analysis of Stellar Populations in the Host Galaxies of SDSS Type I QSOs

We investigate the relationship between host galaxies' stellar content and active galactic nuclei (AGN) for optically selected QSOs with z$<$0.5. There are total 82 QSOs we select from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) . These 82 QSOs both have Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data and measurable stellar content. With the help of the stellar population synthesis code STARLIGHT, we determine the luminosity fraction of AGN ,stellar population ages and star-formation history (SFH) of host galaxies. We find out there is a correlation between the star formation history and AGN property which suggests a possible delay from star formation to AGN. This probably indicates that the AGN activity correlate with the star formation activity which consistent with a co-evolution scheme for black hole and host galaxies.

The galaxy luminosity function in the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area at the Southern Galactic Cap

We present optical luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies in the $^{0.1}g$, $^{0.1}r$, and $^{0.1}i$ bands, calculated using data in $\sim 40$ $deg^{2}$ sky area of LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in Southern Galactic Cap. Redshifts for galaxies brighter $r = 18.1$ were obtained mainly with LAMOST. In each band, LFs derived using both parametric and non-parametric maximum likelihood methods agree well with each other. In the $^{0.1}r$ band, our fitting parameters of the Schechter function are $ϕ_{*}=(1.65\pm0.36)\times10^{-2}h^{3}Mpc^{-3}$, $M_{*}=-20.69\pm0.06$ mag, and $α=-1.12\pm0.08$, in agreements with previous studies. Separate LFs are also derived for emission line galaxies and absorption line galaxies, respectively. The LFs of absorption line galaxies show a dip at $^{0.1}r \sim 18.5$ and can be well fitted by a double-Gaussian function, suggesting a bi-modality in passive galaxies.

Low Surface Brightness Galaxy catalogue selected from the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 Survey and Tully-Fisher relation

We present a catalogue of an HI-selected sample of 1129 low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) searched from the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 survey. This sample, consisting of various types of galaxies in terms of luminosity and morphology, has extended the parameter space covered by the existing LSBG samples. Based on a subsample of 173 LSBGs which are selected from our entire LSBG sample to have the 2-horn shapes of the HI line profiles, minor-to-major axial ratios (b/a) less than 0.6 and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of HI detection greater than 6.5, we investigated the Tully-Fisher relation (TFr) of LSBGs in the optical B, g and r bands and near-infrared J, H and K bands as well. In optical bands, the LSBG subsample follows the fundamental TFr which was previously defined for normal spiral galaxies. In NIR bands, the TFrs for our LSBG subsample are slightly different from the TFrs for the normal bright galaxies. This might be due to the internal extinction issue. Furthermore, the mass-to-light ratio (M/L),disk scale length (h) and mass surface density (sigma) for our LSBG subsample were deduced from the optical TFr results. Compared with High Surface Brightness Galaxies(HSBGs), our LSBGs have higher M/L, larger h and lower sigma than HSBGs.

ALMA Observation of NGC5135: The Circumnuclear CO(6-5) and Dust Continuum Emission at 45 Parsec Resolution[$\star$]

We present high-resolution (0.17\arcsec $\times$ 0.14\arcsec) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO\,(6-5) line, and 435\um\ dust continuum emission within a $\sim$9\arcsec $\times$ 9\arcsec\ area centered on the nucleus of the galaxy NGC\,5135. NGC\,5135 is a well-studied luminous infrared galaxy that also harbors a Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN). At the achieved resolution of 48 $\times$ 40\,pc, the CO\,(6-5) and dust emissions are resolved into gas "clumps" along the symmetrical dust lanes associated with the inner stellar bar. The clumps have radii between $\sim$45-180\,pc and CO\,(6-5) line widths of $\sim$60-88\,\kms. The CO\,(6-5) to dust continuum flux ratios vary among the clumps and show an increasing trend with the \FeII/Br-$γ$ ratios, which we interpret as evidence for supernova-driven shocked gas providing a significant contribution to the \co65\ emission. The central AGN is undetected in continuum, nor in CO\,(6-5) if its line velocity width is no less than $\sim$\,40\,\kms. We estimate that the AGN contributes at most 1\% of the integrated CO\,(6-5) flux of 512 $\pm$ 24$\,$Jy\kms\ within the ALMA field of view, which in turn accounts for $\sim$32\% of the CO\,(6-5) flux of the whole galaxy.

The relation between HI Gas and Star Formation Properties in Nearby Galaxies

In this paper, we present some correlations of neutral hydrogen HI gas and physical properties of galaxies to investigate the role of atomic gas in governing galaxy evolution. We build a HI-detected sample including 70 galaxies that are detected by ALFALFA in a 15 deg$^2$ region, and derive their star formation distribution based on the images of $\rm Hα$ narrow-band observed here. In general, HI-detected galaxies have low surface density of stellar mass and active star formation. Additionally, most of the galaxies are in good agreement with the star-forming main sequence, consistent with the previous findings. We confirm the dependence of star formation (SF) in galaxies on HI gas at least on global scale, i.e., star formation rate (SFR) generally increases with HI mass, specific star formation rate (SSFR$\equiv$SFR/M$_*$) increases with HI fraction ($f_{HI}$) even for a given stellar mass, and \hi-based star formation efficiency (SFE) mildly increases with the stellar mass and SFR surface density. Based on the distribution of stellar mass and star formation, we calculate the morphology indices of the sample, and analyze the dependence of $f_{HI}$ and SFE on them. The weak correlations between SFE and morphological indexes imply a weak physical link between HI and star formation in small scale. We find that $f_{HI}$ mildly increases with the asymmetry and decreases with the concentration of galaxies, suggesting that the HI gas supply and its effect are likely correlated with external processes in the extended disks of galaxies.

Photometric calibration for the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey and Mayall z-band Legacy Survey

We present the photometric calibration of the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) and Mayall z-band Legacy Survey (MzLS), which are two of the three wide-field optical legacy imaging surveys to provide the baseline targeting data for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project. The method of our photometric calibration is subdivided into the external and internal processes. The former utilizes the point-source objects of Pan-STARRS1 survey (PS1) as the reference standards to achieve the zero points of the absolute flux for individual exposures. And then the latter revise the zero points to make them consistent across the survey based on multiple tilings and large offset overlaps. Our process achieves a homogeneous photometric calibration over most of the sky with precision better than 10 mmag for g and r bands, 15 mmag for z band. The accuracy of the calibration is better than 1% at the bright end (16-18 mag) over most of the survey area.

Mapping the emission line strengths and kinematics of Supernova Remnant S147 with extensive LAMOST spectroscopic observations

We present extensive spectroscopic observations of supernova remnant (SNR) S147 collected with the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). The spectra were carefully sky-subtracted taking into account the complex filamentary structure of S147. We have utilized all available LAMOST spectra toward S147, including sky and stellar spectra. By measuring the prominent optical emission lines including Hα, [NII]λ6584, and [SII]λλ6717,6731, we present maps of radial velocity and line intensity ratio covering the whole nebula of S147 with unprecedented detail. The maps spatially correlated well with the complex filamentary structure of S147. For the central 2 deg of S147, the radial velocity varies from -100 to 100 km/s and peaks between ~ 0 and 10 km/s. The intensity ratios of Hα/[SII]λλ6717,6731, [SII]λ6717/λ6731 and Hα/[NII]λ6584 peak at about 0.77, 1.35 and 1.48, respectively, with a scatter of 0.17, 0.19 and 0.37, respectively. The intensity ratios are consistent with the literature values. However, the range of variations of line intensity ratios estimated here and representative of the whole nebula, are larger than previously estimated.

An H$α$ Imaging Survey of the Low-surface-brightness Galaxies Selected from the Fall Sky Region of the 40$\%$ ALFALFA \ion{H}{1} Survey

We present the observed H$α$ flux and derived star formation rates (SFRs) for a fall sample of low$-$surface$-$brightness galaxies (LSBGs). The sample is selected from the fall sky region of the 40$\%$ ALFALFA {\ion{H}{1}} survey $-$ SDSS DR7 photometric data, and all the $Hα$ images were obtained using the 2.16 m telescope, operated by the National Astronomy Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A total of 111 LSBGs were observed and $Hα$ flux was measured in 92 of them. Though almost all the LSBGs in our sample are {\ion{H}{1}}$-$rich, their SFRs derived from the extinction and filter$-$transmission$-$corrected $Hα$ flux, are less than 1$M_{\sun}$$yr^{-1}$. LSBGs and star forming galaxies have similar {\ion{H}{1}} surface densities, but LSBGs have much lower SFRs and SFR surface densities than star$-$forming galaxies. Our results show that LSBGs deviate from the Kennicutt-Schmidt law significantly, which indicate that they have low star formation efficiency. The SFRs of LSBGs are close to average SFRs in Hubble time and support the previous arguments that most of the LSBGs are stable systems and they tend to seldom contain strong interactions or major mergers during their star formation histories.

Towards Clinical Diagnosis: Automated Stroke Lesion Segmentation on Multimodal MR Image Using Convolutional Neural Network

The patient with ischemic stroke can benefit most from the earliest possible definitive diagnosis. While the high quality medical resources are quite scarce across the globe, an automated diagnostic tool is expected in analyzing the magnetic resonance (MR) images to provide reference in clinical diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a deep learning method to automatically segment ischemic stroke lesions from multi-modal MR images. By using atrous convolution and global convolution network, our proposed residual-structured fully convolutional network (Res-FCN) is able to capture features from large receptive fields. The network architecture is validated on a large dataset of 212 clinically acquired multi-modal MR images, which is shown to achieve a mean dice coefficient of 0.645 with a mean number of false negative lesions of 1.515. The false negatives can reach a value that close to a common medical image doctor, making it exceptive for a real clinical application.

Group Sparse Precoding for Cloud-RAN with Multiple User Antennas

Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has become a promising network architecture to support the massive data traffic in the next generation cellular networks. In a C-RAN, a massive number of low-cost remote antenna ports (RAPs) are connected to a single baseband unit (BBU) pool via high-speed low-latency fronthaul links, which enables efficient resource allocation and interference management. As the RAPs are geographically distributed, the group sparse beamforming schemes attracts extensive studies, where a subset of RAPs is assigned to be active and a high spectral efficiency can be achieved. However, most studies assumes that each user is equipped with a single antenna. How to design the group sparse precoder for the multiple antenna users remains little understood, as it requires the joint optimization of the mutual coupling transmit and receive beamformers. This paper formulates an optimal joint RAP selection and precoding design problem in a C-RAN with multiple antennas at each user. Specifically, we assume a fixed transmit power constraint for each RAP, and investigate the optimal tradeoff between the sum rate and the number of active RAPs. Motivated by the compressive sensing theory, this paper formulates the group sparse precoding problem by inducing the $\ell_0$-norm as a penalty and then uses the reweighted $\ell_1$ heuristic to find a solution. By adopting the idea of block diagonalization precoding, the problem can be formulated as a convex optimization, and an efficient algorithm is proposed based on its Lagrangian dual. Simulation results verify that our proposed algorithm can achieve almost the same sum rate as that obtained from exhaustive search.

The LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in the Southern Galactic Cap I. The Spectroscopic Redshift Catalog

We present a spectroscopic redshift catalog from the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in the Southern Galactic Cap (SGC), which is designed to observe all sources (Galactic and extra-galactic) by using repeating observations with a limiting magnitude of $r=18.1~mag$ in two $20~deg^2$ fields. The project is mainly focusing on the completeness of LAMOST ExtraGAlactic Surveys (LEGAS) in the SGC, the deficiencies of source selection methods and the basic performance parameters of LAMOST telescope. In both fields, more than 95% of galaxies have been observed. A post-processing has been applied to LAMOST 1D spectrum to remove the majority of remaining sky background residuals. More than 10,000 spectra have been visually inspected to measure the redshift by using combinations of different emission/absorption features with uncertainty of $σ_{z}/(1+z)<0.001$. In total, there are 1528 redshifts (623 absorption and 905 emission line galaxies) in Field A and 1570 redshifts (569 absorption and 1001 emission line galaxies) in Field B have been measured. The results show that it is possible to derive redshift from low SNR galaxies with our post-processing and visual inspection. Our analysis also indicates that up to 1/4 of the input targets for a typical extra-galactic spectroscopic survey might be unreliable. The multi-wavelength data analysis shows that the majority of mid-infrared-detected absorption (91.3%) and emission line galaxies (93.3%) can be well separated by an empirical criterion of $W2-W3=2.4$. Meanwhile, a fainter sequence paralleled to the main population of galaxies has been witnessed both in $M_r$/$W2-W3$ and $M_*$/$W2-W3$ diagrams, which could be the population of luminous dwarf galaxies but contaminated by the edge-on/highly inclined galaxies ($\sim30\%$).

Molecular Gas and Star-Formation In Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We have obtained CO(J=2-1) spectra of nine face-on low surface brightness galaxies(LSBGs) using the JCMT 15-meter telescope and observed Ha images using the 2.16-meter telescope of NAOC. As no CO has been detected, only upper limits on the H2 masses are given. The upper limits of total molecular hydrogen masses are about (1.2-82.4) x 10^7 Msun. Their star formation rates are mainly lower than 0.4 Msun/yr and star formation efficiencies are lower than 1.364 x 10^10 /yr. Our results show that the absence of molecular gas content is the direct reason for the low star formation rate. The low star formation efficiency probably resulted from the low efficiency of HI gas transforming to H2 gas.

C3N: a Two Dimensional Semiconductor Material with High stiffness,Superior Stability and Bending Poisson's Effect

Recently, a new type of two-dimensional layered material, i.e. C3N, has been fabricated by polymerization of 2,3-diaminophenazine and used to fabricate a field-effect transistor device with an on/off current ratio reaching 5.5E10 (Adv. Mater. 2017, 1605625). Here we have performed a comprehensive first-principles study mechanical and electronic properties of C3N and related derivatives. Ab inito molecular dynamics simulation shows that C3N monolayer can withstand high temperature up to 2000K. Besides high stability, C3N is predicted to be a superior stiff material with high Young's modulus (1090.0 GPa), which is comparable or even higher than that of graphene (1057.7 GPa). By roll-up C3N nanosheet into the corresponding nanotube, an out-of-plane bending deformation is also investigated. The calculation indicates C3N nanosheet possesses a fascinating bending Poisson's effect, namely, bending induced lateral contraction. Further investigation shows that most of the corresponding nanotubes also present high Young's modulus and semiconducting properties. In addition, the electronic properties of few-layer C3N nanosheet is also investigated. It is predicated that C3N monolayer is an indirect semiconductor (1.09 eV) with strongly polar covalent bonds, while the multi-layered C3N possesses metallic properties with AD-stacking. Due to high stability, suitable band gap and superior mechanical strength, the C3N nanosheet will be an ideal candidate in high-strength nano-electronic device applications.

Long-slit Spectroscopy of Edge-on Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We present long-slit optical spectra of 12 edge-on low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) positioned along their major axes. After performing reddening corrections for the emission-line fluxes measured from the extracted integrated spectra, we measured the gas-phase metallicities of our LSBG sample using both the [NII]/Ha and the R_23 diagnostics. Both sets of oxygen abundances show good agreement with each other, giving a median value of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.26 dex. In the luminosity-metallicity plot, our LSBG sample is consistent with the behavior of normal galaxies. In the mass-metallicity diagram, our LSBG sample has lower metallicities for lower stellar mass, similar to normal galaxies. The stellar masses estimated from z-band luminosities are comparable to those of prominent spirals. In a plot of the gas mass fraction versus metallicity, our LSBG sample generally agrees with other samples in the high gas mass fraction space. Additionally, we have studied stellar populations of 3 LSBGs which have relatively reliable spectral continua and high signal-to-noise ratios, and qualitatively conclude that they have a potential dearth of stars with ages <1 Gyr instead of being dominated by stellar populations with ages >1Gyr. Regarding the chemical evolution of our sample, the LSBG data appear to allow for up to 30 % metal loss, but we cannot completely rule out the closed-box model. Additionally, we find evidence that our galaxies retain up to about 3 times as much of their metals compared with dwarfs, consistent with metal retention being related to galaxy mass. In conclusion, our data support the view that LSBGs are probably just normal disk galaxies continuously extending to the low end of surface brightness.

SCUSS u-Band Emission as a Star-Formation-Rate Indicator

We present and analyze the possibility of using optical ${\it u}$-band luminosities to estimate star-formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies based on the data from the South Galactic Cap ${\it u }$ band Sky Survey (SCUSS), which provides a deep ${\it u}$-band photometric survey covering about 5000 $deg^2$ of the South Galactic Cap. Based on two samples of normal star-forming galaxies selected by the BPT diagram, we explore the correlations between ${\it u}$-band, H$α$, and IR luminosities by combing SCUSS data with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and ${\it Wide}$-${\it field\ Infrared\ Survey\ Explorer}$ (${\it WISE}$). The attenuation-corrected ${\it u}$-band luminosities are tightly correlated with the Balmer decrement-corrected H$α$ luminosities with an rms scatter of $\sim$ 0.17 dex. The IR-corrected ${\it u }$ luminosities are derived based on the correlations between the attenuation of ${\it u}$-band luminosities and ${\it WISE}$ 12 (or 22) $μ$m luminosities, and then calibrated with the Balmer-corrected H$α$ luminosities. The systematic residuals of these calibrations are tested against the physical properties over the ranges covered by our sample objects. We find that the best-fitting nonlinear relations are better than the linear ones and recommended to be applied in the measurement of SFRs. The systematic deviations mainly come from the pollution of old stellar population and the effect of dust extinction; therefore, a more detailed analysis is needed in the future work.

Spectral Identification of the u-band Variable Sources in Two LAMOST fields

We selected 82 u-band variable objects based on the u-band photometry data from SCUSS and SDSS, in the field of LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area at Southern Galactic Cap. The magnitude variation of the targets is restricted to larger than 0.2 mag and limiting magnitude down to 19.0 mag in u-band. According to the spectra from LAMOST, there are 11 quasars with red-shift between 0.4 and 1.8, 60 variable stars and 11 unidentified targets. The variable stars include one active M-dwarf with a series of Balmer emission lines, seven Horizontal Branch stars containing six RR Lyrae stars matching with SIMBAD, and one giant, one AGB star and two RR Lyrae candidates by different colour selections. All these variable stars mainly locate near the main sequence in the g-r verse u-g diagram. The quasars are well distinguished from stars by both u-g colour and variation in u-band.

Training Auto-encoders Effectively via Eliminating Task-irrelevant Input Variables

Auto-encoders are often used as building blocks of deep network classifier to learn feature extractors, but task-irrelevant information in the input data may lead to bad extractors and result in poor generalization performance of the network. In this paper, via dropping the task-irrelevant input variables the performance of auto-encoders can be obviously improved .Specifically, an importance-based variable selection method is proposed to aim at finding the task-irrelevant input variables and dropping them.It firstly estimates importance of each variable, and then drops the variables with importance value lower than a threshold. In order to obtain better performance, the method can be employed for each layer of stacked auto-encoders. Experimental results show that when combined with our method the stacked denoising auto-encoders achieves significantly improved performance on three challenging datasets.
