The Xinglong 2.16-m Telescope: Current Instruments and Scientific Projects

The Xinglong 2.16-m reflector is the first 2-meter class astronomical telescope in China. It was jointly designed and built by the Nanjing Astronomical Instruments Factory (NAIF), Beijing Astronomical Observatory (now National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, NAOC) and Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. It is Ritchey-Chrétien (R-C) reflector on an English equatorial mount and the effective aperture is 2.16 meters. It had been the largest optical telescope in China for $\sim18$ years until the Guoshoujing Telescope (also called Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, LAMOST) and the Lijiang 2.4-m telescope were built. At present, there are three main instruments on the Cassegrain focus available: the Beijing Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (BFOSC) for direct imaging and low resolution ($R\sim500-2000$) spectroscopy, the spectrograph made by Optomechanics Research Inc. (OMR) for low resolution spectroscopy (the spectral resolutions are similar to those of BFOSC) and the fiber-fed High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS, $R\sim30000-65000$). The telescope is widely open to astronomers all over China as well as international astronomical observers. Each year there are more than 40 ongoing observing projects, including 6-8 key projects. Recently, some new techniques and instruments (e.g., astro-frequency comb calibration system, polarimeter and adaptive optics) have been or will be tested on the telescope to extend its observing abilities.

FGK 22 $μ$m Excess Stars in LAMOST DR2 Stellar Catalog

Since the release of LAMOST (the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) catalog, we have the opportunity to use the LAMOST DR2 stellar catalog and \emph{WISE All-sky catalog} to search for 22 $μ$m excess candidates. In this paper, we present 10 FGK candidates which show an excess in the infrared (IR) at 22 $μ$m. The ten sources are all the newly identified 22 $μ$m excess candidates. Of these 10 stars, 5 stars are F type and 5 stars are G type. The criterion for selecting candidates is $K_s-[22]_{μm}\geq0.387$. In addition, we present the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) covering wavelength from optical to mid-infrared band. Most of them show an obvious excess from 12 $μ$m band and three candidates even show excess from 3.4 $μ$m. To characterize the amount of dust, we also estimate the fractional luminosity of ten 22 $μ$m excess candidates.

Herschel Observations of Major Merger Pairs at z=0: Dust Mass and Star Formation

We present Herschel PACS $\&$ SPIRE far-infrared (FIR) and sub-mm imaging observations for a large K-band selected sample of 88 close major-merger pairs of galaxies (H-KPAIRs) in 6 photometric bands (70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 $μm$). Among 132 spiral galaxies in the 44 spiral-spiral (S$+$S) pairs and 44 spiral-elliptical (S$+$E) pairs, 113 are detected in at least one Herschel band. Star formation rate (SFR) and dust mass ($M_{\rm dust}$) are derived from the IR SED fitting. Mass of total gas ($M_{\rm gas}$) is estimated by assuming a constant dust-to-gas mass ratio of 0.01. Star forming spiral galaxies (SFGs) in S$+$S pairs show significant enhancements in both specific star formation rate (sSFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE), while having nearly the same gas mass, compared to control galaxies. On the other hand, for SFGs in S$+$E pairs, there is no significant sSFR enhancement and the mean SFE enhancement is significantly lower than that of SFGs in S$+$S pairs. This suggests an important role for the disc-disc collision in the interaction induced star formation. The $M_{\rm gas}$ of SFGs in S$+$E pairs is marginally lower than that of their counterparts in both S$+$S pairs and the control sample. Paired galaxies with and without interaction signs do not differ significantly in their mean sSFR and SFE. As found in previous works, this much larger sample confirms the primary and secondary spirals in S+S pairs follow a Holmberg effect correlation on sSFR.

A sample of galaxy pairs identified from the LAMOST spectral survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

A small fraction($<10\%$) of SDSS main sample galaxies(MGs) have not been targeted with spectroscopy due to the the fiber collision effect. These galaxies have been compiled into the input catalog of the LAMOST extra-galactic survey and named as the complementary galaxy sample. In this paper, we introduce the project and the status of the spectroscopies of the complementary galaxies in the first two years of the LAMOST spectral survey(till Sep. of 2014). Moreover, we present a sample of 1,102 galaxy pairs identified from the LAMOST complementary galaxies and SDSS MGs, which are defined as that the two members have a projected distance smaller than 100 kpc and the recessional velocity difference smaller than 500 $\rm kms^{-1}$. Compared with the SDSS only selected galaxy pairs, the LAMOST-SDSS pairs take the advantages of not being biased toward large separations and therefor play as a useful supplement to the statistical studies of galaxy interaction and galaxy merging.

An Isolated Compact Galaxy Triplet

We report the discovery of an isolated compact galaxy triplet SDSS J084843.45+164417.3, which is first detected by the LAMOST spectral survey and then confirmed by the spectroscopic observation of the BFOSC of the 2.16 meter telescope. It is found that this triplet is an isolated and extremely compact system, which has an aligned configuration and very small radial velocity dispersion. The member galaxies have similar colors and show marginal star formation activities. These results enhance the opinion that the compact triplets are well-evolved systems rather than the hierarchically forming structures. This occasional discovery reveals the limitations of the fiber spectral redshift surveys in studying such compact system, and declares the necessity of additional observations to complete the current redshift sample.

A Sample of E+A Galaxy Candidates in LAMOST Data Released 2

A sample of 70 E+A galaxies are selected from 37, 206 galaxies in the second data release (DR2) of Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) according to the criteria for E+A galaxies defined by Goto, and each of these objects is further visually identified. In this sample, most objects are low redshift E+A galaxies with z < 0.25, and locate in the high latitude sky area with magnitude among 14 to 18 mag in g, r and i bands. A stellar population analysis for the whole sample indicates that the E+A galaxies are characterized by both young and old stellar populations (SPs), and the metal-rich SPs have relatively higher contributions than the metal-poor ones. Additionally, a morphological classification for these objects is performed based on the images taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).

Low Surface Brightness Galaxies selected from the 40% sky area of the ALFALFA HI survey.I.Sample and statistical properties

The population of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies is crucial for understanding the extremes of galaxy formation and evolution of the universe. As LSB galaxies are mostly rich in gas (HI), the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 sample is absolutely one of the best survey combinations to select a sample of them in the local Universe. Since the sky backgrounds are systematically overestimated for galaxy images by the SDSS photometric pipeline, particularly for luminous galaxies or galaxies with extended low surface brightness outskirts, in this paper, we above all estimated the sky backgrounds of SDSS images in the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 sample, using a precise method of sky subtraction. Once subtracting the sky background, we did surface photometry with the Kron elliptical aperture and fitted geometric parameters with an exponential profile model for each galaxy image. Basing on the photometric and geometric results, we further calculated the B-band central surface brightness, mu_{0}(B), for each galaxy and ultimately defined a sample of LSB galaxies consisting of 1129 galaxies with mu_{0}(B) > 22.5 mag arcsec^{-2} and the minor-to-major axis ratio b/a > 0.3. This HI-selected LSB galaxy sample from the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 is a relatively unbiased sample of gas-rich and disk-dominated LSB galaxies, which is complete both in HI observation and the optical magnitude within the limit of SDSS DR7 photometric survey. We made analysis on optical and radio 21cm HI properties of this LSB galaxy sample. Additionally, we statistically investigated the environment of our LSB galaxies, and found that up to 92% of the total LSB galaxies have less than 8 neighbouring galaxies, which strongly evidenced that LSB galaxies prefer to reside in the low-density environment.

A Statistical Study of H I Gas in Nearby Narrow-Line AGN-Hosting Galaxies

As a quenching mechanism, AGN feedback could suppress on-going star formation in their host galaxies. On the basis of a sample of galaxies selected from ALFALFA HI survey, the dependence of their HI mass M[HI], stellar mass M[*] & HI-to-stellar mass ratio M[HI]/M[*] on various tracers of AGN activity are presented and analyzed in this paper. Almost all the AGN-hostings in this sample are gas-rich galaxies, and there is no any evidence to be shown to indicate that the AGN activity could increase/decrease either M[HI] or M[HI]/M[*]. The cold neutral gas can not be fixed positions accurately just based on available HI data due to the large beam size of ALFALFA survey. In addition, even though AGN-hostings are more easily detected by HI survey compared with absorption line galaxies, these two types of galaxies show similar star formation history. If an AGN-hosting would ultimately evolve into an old red galaxy with few cold gas, then when and how the gas has been exhausted have to be solved by future hypotheses and observations.

The discrepancy in the mid-infrared continuum and the features of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for Spitzer and Herschel SWIRE-field galaxies

On the basis of observations by Spitzer and Herschel, we present and analyse the correlations between various monochromatic infrared (IR) luminosities for star-forming galaxies, selected from two northern Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic Survey (SWIRE) fields. The 24- and 70 micron luminosities (L[24] and L[70]), which are dominated by the continuum of very small grains (VSGs) and warm dust in thermal equilibrium, respectively, correlate tightly with ongoing star formation. The contribution from cool dust excited by evolved stars also increases as the wavelength increases in the far-infrared (FIR) wavelength range. The spectral features of ionized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) around rest-frame 8 micron are excited by the moderated radiation field related to evolved stars as well, rather than by the intensive radiation field related to young stars. Even though the carriers of PAHs could be treated as types of VSG with a smaller scale, the radiation condition between PAHs and classic VSGs seems to be significantly different. The formulae to calculate the total infrared luminosity L[TIR] using L[8(dust)] and L[24] are re-scaled and we find that the L[8(dust)] (L[24]) formula likely underestimates (overestimates) L[TIR] for galaxies with unusual current star formation activity.

The HI dominated Low Surface Brightness Galaxy KKR17

We present new narrow-band (H$α$ and [OIII]) imagings and optical spectrophotometry of HII regions for a gas-rich low surface brightness irregular galaxy, KKR 17. The central surface brightness of the galaxy is $μ_0(B)$ = 24.15 $\pm$0.03 mag~sec$^{-2}$. The galaxy was detected by \emph{Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey} (ALFALFA), and its mass is dominated by neutral hydrogen (HI) gas. In contrast, both the stellar masses of the bright HII and diffuse stellar regions are small. In addition, the fit to the spectral energy distribution to each region shows the stellar populations of HII and diffuse regions are different. The bright HII region contains a large fraction of O-type stars, revealing the recent strong star formation, whereas the diffuse region is dominated by median age stars, which has a typical age of $\sim$ 600 Myrs. Using the McGaugh's abundance model, we found that the average metallicity of KKR 17 is 12 + (O/H) = 8.0 $\pm$ 0.1. The star formation rate of KKR 17 is 0.21$\pm$0.04 M$_{\odot}$/yr, which is $\sim$1/5 of our Milky Way's. Based on the analysis results to young stellar clusters in HII region, it is found that the bright HII region showed two sub-components with different velocities and metallicities. This may be caused by the outflow of massive stars or merging events. However, the mechanism of triggering star formation in the HII region is still uncertain.

Star Formation Properties in Barred Galaxies(SFB). III. Statistical Study of Bar-driven Secular Evolution using a sample of nearby barred spirals

Stellar bars are important internal drivers of secular evolution in disk galaxies. Using a sample of nearby spiral galaxies with weak and strong bars, we explore the relationships between the star formation feature and stellar bars in galaxies. We find that galaxies with weak bars tend to be coincide with low concentrical star formation activity, while those with strong bars show a large scatter in the distribution of star formation activity. We find enhanced star formation activity in bulges towards stronger bars, although not predominantly, consistent with previous studies. Our results suggest that different stages of the secular process and many other factors may contribute to the complexity of the secular evolution. In addition, barred galaxies with intense star formation in bars tend to have active star formation in their bulges and disks, and bulges have higher star formation densities than bars and disks, indicating the evolutionary effects of bars. We then derived a possible criterion to quantify the different stages of bar-driven physical process, while future work is needed because of the uncertainties.

Dual-polarization light emission from InAs quantum dots in a annular photonic crystal cavity

The annular photonic crystals have been regarded as a satisfactory candidate to realize dual-polarization photonic device. In this letter, we focus our attention on the study of annular photonic crystal cavity to verify its application in light emission. We proposed a two-dimensional photonic crystal model with annular air units and a point-line defect to construct a cavity for the enhancement of light emission of InAs quantum dots. With the help of global optimization method, we have obtained an annular photonic crystal cavity design which can show a high in-plane quality factor of about 1.3*105 and 2.8*106 for transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, respectively. Based on the Electron Beam Lithography and Reactive Ion Etching techniques, such cavity pattern was transferred into the top of InAs/GaAs active layer. The photoluminescence spectra of sample demonstrated clear light emission at around 1.3 um for both polarizations. Such dual-polarization light emitter has potential applications in optical communications, quantum information processing and other relative areas.

Mono/dual-polarization refractive-index biosensors with enhanced sensitivity based on annular photonic crystals

To promote the development of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PCs) based refractive-index (RI) biosensors, there is an urgent requirement of an effective approach to improve the RI sensitivity of 2D PCs (usually less than 500 nm/RIU). In this work, the photonic band gap (PBG) feature and the corresponding RI sensitivity of the air-ring type 2D annular PCs (APCs) have been studied in detail. Such type of 2D PCs can easily and apparently improve the RI sensitivity in comparison with conventional air-hole type 2D PCs that have been widely studied in previous works. This is because the APCs can naturally exhibit suppressed up edge of PBG that can strongly affect the final RI sensitivity. In general, an enhanced sensing performance of as high as up to 2-3 times RI sensitivity can be obtained from pure 2D APCs. Such high RI sensitivity is also available in three typical waveguides developed from pure 2D APCs. Furthermore, a new conception of dual-polarization RI biosensors has been proposed by defining the RI sensitivity as the difference of crossing relative sensitivity of up-edge PBG between different polarizations. Based on pure 2D APCs, a dual-polarization RI biosensor with high RI sensitivity of around 1190 nm/RIU in infrared range was also presented as an example.

A Search for Double-peaked narrow emission line Galaxies and AGNs in the LAMOST DR1

LAMOST has released more than two million spectra, which provide the opportunity to search for double-peaked narrow emission line (NEL) galaxies and AGNs. The double-peaked narrow-line profiles can be well modeled by two velocity components, respectively blueshifted and redshifted with respect to the systemic recession velocity. This paper presents 20 double-peaked NEL galaxies and AGNs found from LAMOST DR1 using a search method based on multi-gaussian fit of the narrow emission lines. Among them, 10 have already been published by other authors, either listed as genuine double-peaked NEL objects or as asymmetric NEL objects, the remaining 10 being first discoveries. We discuss some possible origins for double-peaked narrow-line features, as interaction between jet and narrow line regions, interaction with companion galaxies and black hole binaries. Spatially resolved optical imaging and/or follow-up observations in other spectral bands are needed to further discuss the physical mechanisms at work.

Metallicity and Star Formation Activities of the Interacting System Arp 86 from Observation with MOS on Xinglong 2.16m Telescope

We present an analysis of the metallicity and star formation activities of HII regions in the interacting system Arp 86, based on the first scientific observation of the multi-object spectroscopy on the 2.16m Telescope at Xinglong Observatory. We find that the oxygen abundance gradient in Arp 86 is flatter than that in normal disk galaxies, which confirms that gas inflows caused by tidal forces during encounters can flatten the metallicity distributions in galaxies. The companion galaxy NGC 7752 is currently experiencing a galaxy-wide starburst with higher surface density of star formation rate than the main galaxy NGC 7753, which can be explained that the companion galaxy is more susceptible to the effects of interaction than the primary. We also find that the galaxy 2MASX J23470758+2926531 has similar abundance and star formation properties to NGC 7753, and may be a part of the Arp 86 system.

Bright 22 $μ$m Excess Candidates from WISE All-Sky Catalog and Hipparcos Main Catalog

In this paper we present a catalog which includes 141 bright candidates ($\leq10.27$ mag, V band) showing the infrared (IR) excess at 22 $μ$m. Of which, 38 stars are known IR excess stars or disk, 23 stars are double or multiple stars and 4 are Be stars. While the remaining more than 70 stars are identified as the 22 $μ$m excess candidates in our work. The criterion of selecting candidates is $K_s-[22]_{μm}$. All these candidates are selected from \emph{WISE} All-sky data cross-correlated with \emph{Hipparcos} Main Catalog and the likelihood-ratio technique is employed. Considering the effect of background, we introduce the \emph{IRAS} 100 $μ$m level to exclude the high background. We also estimated the coincidence probability of these sources. In addition, we presented the optical to mid-infrared SEDs and optical images of all the candidates, and gave the observed optical spectra of 6 stars with NAOC's 2.16-m telescope. To measure for the dust amount around each star, the fractional luminosity is also provided. We also test whether our method of selecting IR excess stars can be used to search for extra-solar planets, we cross-matched our catalog with known IR-excess stars having planets but none is matched. Finally, we give the fraction of stars showing IR-excess for different spectral type of main-sequence stars.

Type IIn Supernova SN 2010jl: Optical Observations for Over 500 Days After Explosion

We present extensive optical observations of a Type IIn supernova (SN) 2010jl for the first 1.5 years after the discovery. The UBVRI light curves demonstrated an interesting two-stage evolution during the nebular phase, which almost flatten out after about 90 days from the optical maximum. SN 2010jl has one of the highest intrinsic H_alpha luminosity ever recorded for a SN IIn, especially at late phase, suggesting a strong interaction of SN ejecta with the dense circumstellar material (CSM) ejected by the progenitor. This is also indicated by the remarkably strong Balmer lines persisting in the optical spectra. One interesting spectral evolution about SN 2010jl is the appearance of asymmetry of the Balmer lines. These lines can be well decomposed into a narrow component and an intermediate-width component. The intermediate-width component showed a steady increase in both strength and blueshift with time until t ~ 400 days after maximum, but it became less blueshifted at t ~ 500 days when the line profile appeared relatively symmetric again. Owing to that a pure reddening effect will lead to a sudden decline of the light curves and a progressive blueshift of the spectral lines, we therefore propose that the asymmetric profiles of H lines seen in SN 2010jl is unlikely due to the extinction by newly formed dust inside the ejecta, contrary to the explanation by some early studies. Based on a simple CSM-interaction model, we speculate that the progenitor of SN 2010jl may suffer a gigantic mass loss (~ 30-50 M_sun) in a few decades before explosion. Considering a slow moving stellar wind (e.g., ~ 28 km/s) inferred for the preexisting, dense CSM shell and the extremely high mass-loss rate (1-2 M_sun per yr), we suggest that the progenitor of SN 2010jl might have experienced a red supergiant stage and explode finally as a post-red supergiant star with an initial mass above 30-40 M_sun.

The Debris Disk Candidates: Eleven 24$μ$m excess stars in Spitzer SWIRE Fields

We present the optical to mid-infrared SEDs of 11 debris disk candidates from $Spitzer$ SWIRE fields. All these candidates are selected from SWIRE 24$μ$m sources matched with both the SDSS star catalog and the 2MASS point source catalog. They show an excess in the mid-infrared at 24$μ$m ($K_S$-[24]$_{Vega}$ $\ge$ 0.44) indicating the presence of a circumstellar dust disk. The observed optical spectra show that they are all late type main-sequence stars covering the spectral types of FGKM. Their fractional luminosities are well above 5$\times10^{-5}$, even up to the high fractional luminosity of 1$\times10^{-3}$. The high galactic latitudes of SWIRE fields indicate that most of these candidates could belong to the oldest stars in the thick disk. Our results indicate that the high fractional luminosity debris disks could exist in the old solar-like star systems, though they are now still quite rare. Their discoveries at high-galactic latitudes will also provide us an excellent opportunity to the further studies of properties and evolution of the debris disk in the ISM poor environments.
