Superconducting valence bond fluid in lightly doped 8-leg $t$-$J$ cylinders

Superconductivity in doped quantum paramagnets has been a subject of long theoretical inquiry. In this work we report a density matrix renormalization group study of lightly doped $t$-$J$ models on the square lattice (doped hole densities $δ= 1/12$ and 1/8) with parameters for which previous studies have suggested that the undoped system in 2D is either a quantum spin liquid or a valence bond crystal. Our studies are performed on cylinders with width up to 8. Ground-state correlations are found to be nearly identical for the ``doped quantum spin liquid'' and ``doped valence bond crystal''. Upon increasing the cylinder width from 4 to 8, we observed a significant strengthening of the quasi-long-range superconducting correlations, and a dramatic suppression of any ``competing'' charge-density-wave order. Extrapolating from the observed behavior of the width 8 cylinders, we speculate that the system has a nodeless d-wave superconducting ground-state in the 2D limit.

Pair density wave in doped three-band Hubbard model on two-leg square cylinders

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting (SC) state with spatially modulated order parameter. Although much is known about the properties of the PDW state, its realization in microscopic models with divergent susceptibility has been challenging. Here we report a density-matrix renormalization group study of a three-band Hubbard model (also known as the Emery model) for cuprates on long two-leg square cylinders. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with that of a PDW state with mutually commensurate and power-law SC, charge (CDW) and spin (SDW) density wave correlations. The SC correlations are dominant between neighboring Cu sites with d-wave pairing symmetry. Interestingly, we find that the near-neighbor interactions, especially the near-neighbor attractive $V_{pd}$ interaction between neighboring Cu and oxygen sites, can notably enhance the SC correlations while simultaneously suppressing the CDW correlations. For a modestly strong attractive $V_{pd}$, the SC correlations become quasi-long-ranged with a divergent PDW susceptibility.

Plaquette valence bond state in spin-1/2 J1-J2 XY model on square lattice

We studied the ground state phase diagram of spin-1/2 J1-J2 XY model on the square lattice with first- J1 and second-neighbor J2 antiferromagnetic interactions using both iDMRG and DMRG approaches. We show that a plaquette valence bond phase is realized in an intermediate region 0.50 <= J2/J1 <= 0.54 between a Néel magnetic ordered phase at J2/J1 < 0.50 and a stripy magnetic ordered phase at J2/J1 >= 0.54. The plaquette valence bond phase is characterized by finite dimer orders in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Contrary to the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model, we do not find numerical evidence for a quantum spin liquid phase in the J1-J2 XY model.

Charge order and superconductivity in a minimal two-band model for infinite-layer nickelates

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has drawn considerable attention; however, a consensus on the fundamental building blocks and common ingredients necessary to understand and describe their ground states and emergent properties is lacking. A series of experimental and theoretical studies have suggested that an effective two-band Hubbard model with Ni 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and rare-earth ($R$) 5$d$ character may describe the low-energy physics. Here, we study the ground state properties of this two-band model on four-leg cylinders using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique to better grasp whether such a simple model can embody the essential physics. A key difference compared to single-band Hubbard materials is that the system is self-doped: even at overall half-filling, the $R$-band acts as an electron reservoir, hole-doping the Ni-layer and fundamentally altering the physics expected from an undoped antiferromagnet. On the four-leg cylinder, the ground state is consistent with a Luttinger liquid, with anti-phase modulations of the charge density in the Ni- and $R$-layers having corresponding wavevectors that lock together. Light hole doping away from 1/2 filling releases the locking between the Ni and the $R$ charge modulations, as the electron density in the $R$-band decreases and eventually becomes exhausted at a hole doping concentration that depends sensitively on the effective splitting between the Ni and the $R$ orbitals. The ground state of the doped system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid, possessing quasi-long-range superconducting correlations in the Ni layer, similar to the single-band Hubbard model. Our results are consistent with experimental observations and may help to reveal the microscopic mechanism for pairing and other emergent properties.

Random singlet-like phase of disordered Hubbard chains

Local moment formation is ubiquitous in disordered semiconductors such as Si:P, where it is observed both in the metallic and the insulating regimes. Here, we focus on local moment behavior in disordered insulators, which arises from short-ranged, repulsive electron-electron interactions. Using density matrix renormalization group and strong-disorder renormalization group methods, we study paradigmatic models of interacting insulators: one dimensional Hubbard chains with quenched randomness. In chains with either random fermion hoppings or random chemical potentials, both at and away from half-filling, we find exponential decay of charge and fermion 2-point correlations but power-law decay of spin correlations that are indicative of the random singlet phase. The numerical results can be understood qualitatively by appealing to the large-interaction limit of the Hubbard chain, in which a remarkably simple picture emerges.

Enhanced superconductivity by near-neighbor attraction in the doped Hubbard model

Recent experiment has unveiled an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction in one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{3+δ}$. While the near-neighbor electron attraction $V$ in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain has been examined recently, its effect in the Hubbard model beyond the one-dimensional chain remains unclear. We report a density-matrix renormalization group study of the extended Hubbard model on long four-leg cylinders on the square lattice. We find that the near-neighbor electron attraction $V$ can notably enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations while simultaneously suppressing the charge-density-wave correlations. Specifically, for a modestly strong electron attraction, the superconducting correlations become dominant over the CDW correlations with a Luttinger exponent $K_{sc}\sim 1$ and strong divergent superconducting susceptibility. Our results provide a promising way to realize long-range superconductivity in the doped Hubbard model in two dimensions. The relevance of our numerical results to cuprate materials is also discussed.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

We study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- ($J_1$), next-nearest- ($J_2$), and third-neighbor ($J_3$) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with $SU(2)$ spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to $L_x=48$ and circumference $L_y=6 - 12$. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of $J_3$ interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Fluctuating intertwined stripes in the strange metal regime of the Hubbard model

Strongly correlated electron systems host a variety of poorly understood correlations in their high temperature normal state. Unlike ordered phases defined by order parameters, these normal state phases are often defined through unconventional properties such as strange metallic transport or spectroscopic pseudogaps. Characterizing the microscopic correlations in the normal state is necessary to elucidate mechanisms that lead to these properties and their connection to ground state orders. Here we establish the presence of intertwined charge and spin stripes in the strange metal normal state of the Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The charge and spin density waves constituting the stripes are fluctuating and short-ranged, yet they obey a mutual commensurability relation and remain microscopically interlocked, as evidenced through measurements of three-point spin-spin-hole correlation functions. Our findings demonstrate the ability of many-body numerical simulations to unravel the microscopic correlations that define quantum states of matter.

Spin-Triplet Pairing Induced by Near-Neighbor Attraction in the Cuprate Chain

In quantum materials, the electronic interaction and the electron-phonon coupling are, in general, two essential ingredients, the combined impact of which may drive exotic phases. Recently, an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction, mediated by phonons, has been unveiled in one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{3+δ}$. Yet, it is unclear how this strong near-neighbor attraction $V$ influences the superconductivity pairing in the compound. Here we perform accurate many-body calculations to study the extended Hubbard model with on-site Coulomb repulsion $U>0$ and attraction $V<0$ that well describes the cuprate chain and likely other similar transition-metal materials with both strong correlations and lattice effects. We find a rich quantum phase diagram containing an intriguing Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase -- besides the spin density wave and various phase separation phases -- that can host dominant spin-triplet pairing correlations and divergent superconductive susceptibility. Upon doping, the spin-triplet superconducting regime can be further broadened in the parameter space and extends to larger $U$, offering a feasible mechanism to realize $p$-wave superconductivity in realistic cuprate chains.

High energy spin excitations in the quantum spin liquid candidate Zn-barlowite probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

A quantum spin liquid is a novel ground state that can support long-range entanglement between magnetic moments, resulting in exotic spin excitations involving fractionalized $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spinons. Here, we measure the excitations in single crystals of the spin liquid candidate Zn-barlowite using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. By analyzing the incident polarization and temperature dependences, we deduce a clear magnetic scattering contribution forming a broad continuum that surprisingly extends up to $\sim$200 meV ($\sim$14$J$, where $J$ is the magnetic exchange). The excitation spectrum reveals that significant contributions arise from multiple pairs of spinons and/or antispinons at high energies.

Stripe order enhanced superconductivity in the Hubbard model

Unidirectional ("stripe") charge-density-wave order has now been established as a ubiquitous feature in the phase diagram of the cuprate high temperature (HT) superconductors, where it generally competes with superconductivity (SC). None-the-less, on theoretical grounds it has been conjectured that stripe order (or other forms of "optimal" inhomogeneities) may play an essential positive role in the mechanism of HTSC. Here we report density matrix renormalization group studies of the Hubbard model on long 4 and 6 leg cylinders where the hopping matrix elements transverse to the long direction are periodically modulated - mimicing the effect of putative period-2 stripe order. We find even modest amplitude modulations can enhance the long-distance SC correlations by many orders of magnitude, and drive the system into a phase with a substantial spin gap and SC quasi-long-range-order with a Luttinger exponent, $K_{sc} \sim 1$.

High Temperature Superconductivity in a Lightly Doped Quantum Spin Liquid

We have performed density-matrix renormalization group studies of a square lattice $t$-$J$ model with small hole doping, $δ\ll 1$, on long 4 and 6 leg cylinders. We include frustration in the form of a second-neighbor exchange coupling, $J_2 = J_1/2$, such that the undoped ($δ=0$) "parent" state is a quantum spin liquid. In contrast to the relatively short range superconducting (SC) correlations that have been observed in recent studies of the 6-leg cylinder in the absence of frustration, we find power law SC correlations with a Luttinger exponent, $K_{sc} \approx 1$, consistent with a strongly diverging SC susceptibility, $χ\sim T^{-(2-K_{sc})}$ as the temperature $T\to 0$. The spin-spin correlations - as in the undoped state - fall exponentially suggesting that the SC "pairing" correlations evolve smoothly from the insulating parent state.

Doping quantum spin liquids on the Kagome lattice

We review recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of lightly doped quantum spin liquids (QSLs) on the kagome lattice. While a number of distinct conducting phases, including high-temperature superconductivity, have been theoretically anticipated we find instead a tendency toward fractionalized insulating charge-density-wave (CDW) states. In agreement with earlier work (Jiang, Devereaux, and Kivelson, Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 119}$, 067002 (2017)), results for the $t$-$J$ model reveal that starting from a fully gapped QSL, light doping leads to CDW long-range order with a pattern that depends on lattice geometry and doping concentration such that there is one doped-hole per CDW unit cell, while the spin-spin correlations remain short-ranged. Alternatively, this state can be viewed as a stripe crystal or Wigner crystal of spinless holons, rather than doped holes. From here, by studying generalized versions of the $t$-$J$ model, we extend these results to light doping of other types of QSLs, including critical and chiral QSLs. Our results suggest that doping these QSLs also leads to insulating states with long-range CDW orders. While the superconducting correlations are short-ranged, they can be significantly enhanced by second-neighbor electron hopping. The relevance of our numerical results to Kagome materials is also discussed.

Gapless spin liquid and pair density wave of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders

We study the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on three-leg triangular cylinders using large-scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations. At half-filling, we identify an intermediate gapless spin liquid phase between a metallic phase at weak coupling and Mott insulating dimer phase at strong interaction, which has one gapless spin mode and algebraic spin-spin correlations but exponential decay scalar chiral-chiral correlations. Upon light doping the gapless spin liquid, the system exhibits power-law charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations but short-range single-particle, spin-spin, and chiral-chiral correlations. Similar to CDW correlations, the superconducting correlations are also quasi-long-ranged but oscillate in sign as a function of distance, which is consistent with the striped pair-density wave. When further doping the gapless spin liquid phase or doping the dimer order phase, another phase takes over, which has similar CDW correlations but all other correlations decay exponentially.

Evidence of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction $J_K$, which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the $t$-$J_K$ model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. The dominant pairing channel is the even-parity superconducting pair-pair correlations with $d$-wave-like symmetry, which oscillate in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the first example where a pair-density wave is the strongest SC order on a bipartite lattice. Our results may be relevant to ${\rm Na_2IrO_3}$ and $α$-${\rm RuCl_3}$ upon doping.

Quantum Phases of Kagome Electron System with Half-Filled Flat Bands

We study the quantum phase diagram of spinful fermions on kagome lattice with half-filled lowest flat bands. To understand the competition between magnetism, flat band frustration, and repulsive interactions, we adopt an extended $t$-$J$ model, where the hopping energy $t$, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction $J$, and short-range neighboring Hubbard interaction $V$ are considered. In the weak $J$ regime, we identify a fully spin-polarized phase, which can further support the spontaneous Chern insulating phase driven by the short-range repulsive interaction. This phase still emerges with in-plane ferromagnetism, whereas the non-interacting Chern insulator disappears constrained by symmetry. As $J$ gradually increases, the ferromagnetism is suppressed and the system first becomes partially-polarized with large magnetization and then enters a non-polarized phase with the ground state exhibiting vanishing magnetization. We identify this non-polarized phase as an insulator with a nematic charge density wave. In the end, we discuss the potential experimental observations of our theoretical findings.

Topological Superconductivity in Doped Symmetry Protected Topological State

We propose an exotic scenario that topological superconductivity can emerge by doping strongly interacting fermionic systems whose spin degrees of freedom form bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) state. Specifically, we study a 1-dimensional (1D) example where the spin degrees of freedom form a spin-1 Haldane phase. {Before doping, the charge and spin degrees of freedom are both gapped.} Upon doping, {the charge channel becomes gapless and is described by a $c=1$ compactified bosonic conformal field theory (CFT), while the spin channel remains gapped and still form a bosonic SPT state. Interestingly,} an instability toward $p$-wave topological superconductivity is induced coexisting with the symmetry protected spin edge modes that are inherited from the Haldane phase. This scenario is confirmed by density-matrix renormalization group simulation of a concrete lattice model, where we find that topological superconductivity is robust against interactions. We further show that by stacking doped Haldane phases an exotic 2D anisotropic superconductor can be realized, {where the boundaries transverse to the {chain-}direction are either gapless or spontaneously symmetry-broken due to the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) anomaly.}
