Materializing Rival Ground States in the Barlowite Family of Kagome Magnets: Quantum Spin Liquid, Spin Ordered, and Valence Bond Crystal States

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet is considered an ideal host for a quantum spin liquid ground state. We find that when the bonds of the kagome lattice are modulated with a periodic pattern, new quantum ground states emerge. Newly synthesized crystalline barlowite (Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr) and Zn-substituted barlowite demonstrate the delicate interplay between singlet states and spin order on the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome lattice. Comprehensive structural measurements demonstrate that our new variant of barlowite maintains hexagonal symmetry at low temperatures with an arrangement of distorted and undistorted kagome triangles, for which numerical simulations predict a pinwheel valence bond crystal (VBC) state instead of a quantum spin liquid (QSL). The presence of interlayer spins eventually leads to an interesting pinwheel $q=0$ magnetic order. Partially Zn-substituted barlowite (Cu$_{3.44}$Zn$_{0.56}$(OH)$_6$FBr) has an ideal kagome lattice and shows QSL behavior, indicating a surprising robustness of the QSL against interlayer impurities. The magnetic susceptibility is similar to that of herbertsmithite, even though the Cu$^{2+}$ impurities are above the percolation threshold for the interlayer lattice and they couple more strongly to the nearest kagome moment. This system is a unique playground displaying QSL, VBC, and spin order, furthering our understanding of these highly competitive quantum states.

Topological superconductivity in the doped chiral spin liquid on the triangular lattice

It has long been proposed that doping a chiral spin liquid (CSL) or fractional quantum Hall state can give rise to topological superconductivity. Despite of intensive effort, definitive evidences still remain lacking. We address this problem by studying the $t$-$J$ model supplemented by time-reversal symmetry breaking chiral interaction $J_χ$ on the triangular lattice using density-matrix renormalization group with a finite concentration $δ$ of doped holes. It has been established that the undoped, i.e., $δ$=0, system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region $0.32\le J_χ/J \le 0.56$. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with $d\pm id$-wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. Our results provide direct evidences that doping the CSL on the triangular lattice can naturally give rise to topological superconductivity.

Superconductivity in the doped quantum spin liquid on the triangular lattice

Broad interest in quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases was triggered by the notion that they can be viewed as insulating phases with preexisting electron-pairs, such that upon light doping they might automatically yield superconductivity. Yet despite intense efforts, definitive evidence is lacking. We address the problem of a lightly doped QSL through a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group study of the $t$-$J$ model on the triangular lattice with a small but non-zero concentration of doped holes. The ground state is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations associated with partially-filled charge stripes. In particular, the superconducting correlations are dominant on both four-leg and six-leg cylinders at all hole doping concentrations. Our results provide direct evidences that doping a QSL can naturally lead to robust superconductivity.

Critical role of the sign structure in the doped Mott insulator: Superconductivity vs. Fermi liquid

Mechanism of superconductivity (SC) in a purely interacting electron system has been one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. In the BCS theory, the Landau's Fermi liquid is a normal state against which an SC instability occurs once an \emph{additional} pairing force is added. We show that in the doped Mott insulator an \emph{intrinsic} SC ground state (specifically a Luther-Emery state in a finite-doping two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder) can be directly turned into a Fermi-gas-like state by merely switching off the hidden statistical sign structure via two schemes. It points to a new pairing paradigm, %beyond the resonating-valence-bond scheme, which is an "Amperean-like pairing" with a "stringlike" pairing force as shown by an adiabatic continuity to a strong anisotropic limit of the model.

Ground state phase diagram of the doped Hubbard model on the 4-leg cylinder

We study the ground state properties of the Hubbard model on a 4-leg cylinder with doped hole concentration per site $δ\leq 12.5\%$ using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. Without $t'$ the ground state of the system corresponds with the insulating filled stripe phase with long-range charge-density-wave (CDW) order and short-range incommensurate spin correlations appears. However, for a small negative $t'$ a phase characterized by coexisting algebraic d-wave superconducting (SC)- and algebraic CDW correlations. In addition, it shows short range spin- and fermion correlations consistent with a canonical Luther-Emery (LE) liquid, except that the charge- and spin periodicities are consistent with half-filled stripes instead of the $4 k_F$ and $2 k_F$ wavevectors generic for one dimensional chains. For a small positive $t'$ yet another phase takes over showing similar SC and CDW correlations. However, the fermions are now characterized by a (near) infinite correlation length while the gapped spin system is characterized by simple staggered antiferromagnetic correlations. We will show that this is consistent with a LE formed from a weakly coupled (BCS like) d-wave superconductor on the ladder where the interactions have only the effect to stabilize a cuprate style magnetic resonance.

Field-induced quantum spin liquid in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model and its relation to $α$-RuCl$_3$

Recently considerable excitement has arisen due to the experimental observation of a field-induced spin liquid phase in the compound $α$-RuCl$_3$. However, the nature of this putative spin liquid phase and the relevant microscopic model Hamiltonian remain still unclear. In this work, we address these questions by performing large-scale numerical simulations of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model proposed to describe the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$. While there is no evidence for an intermediate phase for in-plane magnetic fields, our results strongly suggest that a stable intermediate spin liquid phase, sandwiched between a magnetically ordered phase at low fields and a high-field polarized phase, can be induced by out-of-plane magnetic fields. Moreover, we show that this field-induced spin liquid phase can be smoothly connected to a spin liquid possessing a spinon Fermi surface as proposed recently for the Kitaev model. The relevance of our results to $α$-RuCl$_3$ is also discussed.

Field induced quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surfaces in the Kitaev model

Recent experimental evidence for a field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) in $α$-RuCl$_3$ calls for an understanding for the ground state of honeycomb Kitaev model under a magnetic field. In this work we address the nature of an enigmatic gapless paramagnetic phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitave model, under an intermediate magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Combining theoretical and numerical efforts, we identify this gapless phase as a $U(1)$ QSL with spinon Fermi surfaces. We also reveal the nature of continuous quantum phase transitions involving this $U(1)$ QSL, and obtain a phase diagram of the Kitaev model as a function of bond anisotropy and perpendicular magnetic field.

Superconductivity in the Hubbard model and its interplay with charge stripes and next-nearest hopping t'

We report a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group study of the lightly doped Hubbard model on 4-leg cylinders at hole doping concentration $δ=12.5\%$. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we are able to reveal a delicate interplay between superconductivity and charge and spin density wave orders tunable via next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. For finite t', the ground state is consistent with that of a Luther-Emery liquid, having `half-filled' charge stripes with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations of wave-length $λ=1/2δ$, but short-range spin correlations. This is in direct contrast to the case with t'=0, where superconducting correlations fall off exponentially while charge- and spin-density modulations are dominant. Our results indicate that a route to robust long-range superconductivity involves destabilizing insulating charge stripes in the doped Hubbard model.

Superconductivity in the doped $t$-$J$ model: results for four-leg cylinders

We report a density-matrix renormalization group study of the lightly doped $t$-$J$ model on a 4-leg cylinder with doped hole concentrations per site $δ=5\%\sim 12.5\%$. By keeping an unusually large number of states and long system sizes, we are able to accurately document the interplay between d-wave superconductivity (SC) and spin and charge-density-wave (CDW) orders. The long-distance behavior is consistent with that of a Luther-Emery liquid with a spin-gap, power-law CDW correlations with wave-length $λ=1/2δ$, and power-law SC correlations. This is the widest (most nearly 2D) such system for which power law SC correlations have been established.

Stripe order from the perspective of the Hubbard model

A microscopic understanding of the strongly correlated physics of the cuprates must account for the translational and rotational symmetry breaking that is present across all cuprate families, commonly in the form of stripes. Here we investigate emergence of stripes in the Hubbard model, a minimal model believed to be relevant to the cuprate superconductors, using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations at finite temperatures and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) ground state calculations. By varying temperature, doping, and model parameters, we characterize the extent of stripes throughout the phase diagram of the Hubbard model. Our results show that including the often neglected next-nearest-neighbor hopping leads to the absence of spin incommensurability upon electron-doping and nearly half-filled stripes upon hole-doping. The similarities of these findings to experimental results on both electron and hole-doped cuprate families support a unified description across a large portion of the cuprate phase diagram.

Ising order in a magnetized Heisenberg chain subject to a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We report a combined analytical and density matrix renormalized group study of the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain subject to a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a transverse magnetic field. The numerically determined phase diagram of this model, which features two ordered Ising phases and a critical Luttinger liquid one with fully broken spin-rotational symmetry, agrees well with the predictions of Garate and Affleck [Phys. Rev. B 81, 144419 (2010)]. We also confirm the prevalence of the N z Néel Ising order in the regime of comparable DM and magnetic field magnitudes.

Dynamical Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking and Photo-Induced Chiral Spin Liquids in Frustrated Mott Insulators

The search for quantum spin liquids in frustrated quantum magnets recently has enjoyed a surge of interest, with various candidate materials under intense scrutiny. However, an experimental confirmation of a gapped topological spin liquid remains an open question. Here, we show that circularly-polarized light can provide a novel knob to drive frustrated Mott insulators into a chiral spin liquid (CSL), realizing an elusive quantum spin liquid with topological order. We find that the dynamics of a driven Kagome Mott insulator is well-captured by an effective Floquet spin model, with heating strongly suppressed, inducing a scalar spin chirality $S_i \cdot (S_j \times S_k)$ term which dynamically breaks time-reversal while preserving SU(2) spin symmetry. We fingerprint the transient phase diagram and find a stable photo-induced CSL near the equilibrium state. The results presented suggest employing dynamical symmetry breaking to engineer quantum spin liquids and access elusive phase transitions that are not readily accessible in equilibrium.

Symmetry protected topological Luttinger liquids and the phase transition between them

We show that a doped spin-1/2 ladder with antiferromagnetic intra-chain and ferromagnetic inter-chain coupling is a symmetry protected topologically non-trivial Luttinger liquid. Turning on a large easy-plane spin anisotropy drives the system to a topologically-trivial Luttinger liquid. Both phases have full spin gaps and exhibit power-law superconducting pair correlation. The Cooper pair symmetry is singlet $d_{xy}$ in the non-trivial phase and triplet $S_z=0$ in the trivial phase. The topologically non-trivial Luttinger liquid exhibits gapless spin excitations in the presence of a boundary, and it has no non-interacting or mean-field theory analog even when the fluctuating phase in the charge sector is pinned. As a function of the strength of spin anisotropy there is a topological phase transition upon which the spin gap closes. We speculate these Luttinger liquids are relevant to the superconductivity in metalized integer spin ladders or chains.

The phase transitions between $Z_n\times Z_n$ bosonic topological phases in 1+1 D, and a constraint on the central charge for the critical points between bosonic symmetry protected topological phases

The study of continuous phase transitions triggered by spontaneous symmetry breaking has brought revolutionary ideas to physics. Recently, through the discovery of symmetry protected topological phases, it is realized that continuous quantum phase transition can also occur between states with the same symmetry but different topology. Here we study a specific class of such phase transitions in 1+1 dimensions -- the phase transition between bosonic topological phases protected by $Z_n\times Z_n$. We find in all cases the critical point possesses two gap opening relevant operators: one leads to a Landau-forbidden symmetry breaking phase transition and the other to the topological phase transition. We also obtained a constraint on the central charge for general phase transitions between symmetry protected bosonic topological phases in 1+1D.

Holon Wigner Crystal in a Lightly Doped Kagome Quantum Spin Liquid

We address the problem of a lightly doped spin-liquid through a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the $t$-$J$ model on a Kagome lattice with a small but non-zero concentration, $δ$, of doped holes. It is now widely accepted that the undoped ($δ=0$) spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet has a spin-liquid groundstate. Theoretical arguments have been presented that light doping of such a spin-liquid could give rise to a high temperature superconductor or an exotic topological Fermi liquid metal (FL$^\ast$). Instead, we infer that the doped holes form an insulating charge-density wave state with one doped-hole per unit cell - i.e. a Wigner crystal (WC). Spin correlations remain short-ranged, as in the spin-liquid parent state, from which we infer that the state is a crystal of spinless holons (WC$^\ast$), rather than of holes. Our results may be relevant to Kagome lattice Herbertsmithite $\rm ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2$ upon doping.

Numerical evidence of fluctuating stripes in the normal state of high-Tc cuprate superconductors

Upon doping, Mott insulators often exhibit symmetry breaking where charge carriers and their spins organize into patterns known as stripes. For high-Tc superconducting cuprates, stripes are widely suspected to exist in a fluctuating form. Here, we use numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations to demonstrate dynamical stripe correlations in the three-band Hubbard model, which represents the local electronic structure of the Cu-O plane. Our results, which are robust to varying parameters, cluster size, and boundary condition, strongly support the interpretation of a variety of experimental observations in terms of the physics of fluctuating stripes, including the hourglass magnetic dispersion and the Yamada plot of incommensurability vs. doping. These findings provide a novel perspective on the intertwined orders emerging from the cuprates' normal state.

Intertwined Order in a Frustrated 4-leg $t - J$ Cylinder

We report a density-matrix renormalization group study of the $t$-$J$ model with nearest ($t_1$ & $J_1$) and next-nearest ($t_2$ & $J_2$) interactions on a 4-leg cylinder with concentration $δ=1/8$ of doped holes. We observe an astonishingly complex interplay between uniform $d$-wave superconductivity (SC) and strong spin and charge density wave ordering tendencies (SDW and CDW). Depending on parameters, the CDWs can be commensurate with period 4 or 8. By comparing the charge ordering vectors with $2 k_F$, we rule out Fermi surface nesting-induced density wave order in our model. Magnetic frustration (i.e. $J_2/J_1 \sim 1/2$) significantly quenches SDW correlations with little effect on the CDW. Typically, the SC order is strongly modulated at the CDW ordering vector and exhibits $d$-wave symmetry around the cylinder. There is no evidence of a near-degenerate tendency to pair-density wave (PDW) ordering, charge 4e SC, or orbital current order.

Fractional charge and emergent mass hierarchy in diagonal two-leg t-J cylinders

We define a new class of "diagonal" t-J ladders rotated by $π$/4 relative to the canonical lattice directions of the square lattice, and study it using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Here, we focus on the two-leg cylinder with a doped hole concentration near x = 1/4. At exactly x = 1/4, the system forms a period 4 charge density wave (CDW) and exhibits spin-charge separation. Slightly away from 1/4 doping we observe several topologically distinct types of solitons with well defined fractionalized quantum numbers. Remarkably, given the absence of any obvious small parameter, the effective masses of the emergent solitons differ by several orders of magnitude.
