Non-monotonic field dependence of Kondo conductance in a single-electron transistor driven by microwave field

The interplay between magnetic field and microwave applied in a single-electron transistor(SET) has a profound influence on the Kondo effect, as shown in a recent experiment[B. Hemingway, S. Herbert, M. Melloch and A. Kogan, arXiv:1304.0037(2013)]. For a given microwave frequency, the Kondo differential conductance shows a non-monotonic magnetic field dependence, and a very sharp peak is observed for certain field applied. Additionally, the microwave frequency is found to be larger of about one order than the corresponding Zeeman energy. These two features are not understood in the current theory. Here we propose a phenomenological mechanism to explain these observations. When both magnetic field and microwave are applied in the SET, if the frequency matches the (renormalized) Zeeman energy, it is assumed that the microwave is able to induce spin-flip in the SET, which leads to two consequences. One is the dot level shifts down and the other is the renormalization of the Zeeman energy. This picture can not only explain qualitatively the main findings in the experiment but also further stimulate the related experimental study of the dynamic response of the Kondo effect in out-of-equilibrium devices.

Kondo spin liquid in Kondo necklace model: Classical disordered phase versus symmetry-protected topological state

We study possible topological features of Kondo spin liquid phase in terms of the one- and two-dimensional Kondo necklace models within the frame work of quantum O(N) non-liner sigma model (NLSM). In the one-dimensional case, it is found that the bulk properties of the Kodno spin liquid phase are similar to the well-known Haldane phase at strong coupling fixed point. The difference between them mainly comes from their boundaries due to the effect of the topological term. In the two-dimensional case, the system can be mapped onto an O(4)-like NLSM with some O(3) anisotropy. Interestingly, we find that if hedgehog-like point defects are included together with the restoration of the full O(4) symmetry, our model is identical to a kind of SU(2) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. Additionally, if the system has the O(5) symmetry instead, the effective NLSM with Wess-Zumino-Witten term is just a description of the surface modes of a three-dimensional SPT state, though such O(5) NLSM could not be a proper description of Kondo spin liquid phase due to its gaplessness. We expect that the discussions might provide useful threads to identify certain microscopic bilayer antiferromagnet models (and related materials), which can support the desirable SPT states.

Anomalous decoherence in a dissipative two-level system

We study systematically the non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of a dissipative two-level system, i.e., the so-called spin-boson model. It is interesting to find that the decoherence tends to be inhibited with the increase of the coupling strength between the system and the reservoir, which is contrary to the common recognition that a stronger coupling always induces a severer decoherence. This is attributed to the occurrence of a quantum phase transition (QPT). The relationship between this QPT and conventional delocalized-localized QPT is also discussed. Our result suggests a useful control method to overcome the detrimental effects of the reservoir to the system.

Generating Many Majorana Modes via Periodic Driving: A Superconductor Model

Realizing Majorana modes (MMs) in condensed-matter systems is of vast experimental and theoretical interests, and some signatures of MMs have been measured already. To facilitate future experimental observations and to explore further applications of MMs, generating many MMs at ease in an experimentally accessible manner has become one important issue. This task is achieved here in a one-dimensional $p$-wave superconductor system with the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. In particular, a periodic modulation of some system parameters can induce an effective long-range interaction (as suggested by the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula) and may recover time-reversal symmetry already broken in undriven cases. By exploiting these two independent mechanisms at once we have established a general method in generating many Floquet MMs via periodic driving.

Inhomogeneous spin domain induced by the quadratic Zeeman effect in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We show two kinds of inhomogeneous spin domain possessing Néel-like domain walls in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, which are induced by the positive and negative quadratic Zeeman effect (QZE) respectively. In both cases, the spin density distribution is inhomogeneous and has zeros where the magnetization vanishes. For positive and negative QZE, the spin patterns and topological structures are remarkably different. Such phenomena are due to the pointwise different axisymmetry-breaking caused by the pointwise different population exchange between the sublevels, arising uniquely from the QZE. We analyze in detail the inhomogeneous domain formation and related experimental observations for the spin-1 $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na condensate.

Half-filled Kondo lattice on the honeycomb lattice

The unique linear density of state around the Dirac points for the honeycomb lattice brings much novel features in strongly correlated models. Here we study the ground-state phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling by using an extended mean-field theory. By treating magnetic interaction and Kondo screening on an equal footing, it is found that besides a trivial discontinuous first-order quantum phase transition between well-defined Kondo insulator and antiferromagnetic insulating state, there can exist a wide coexistence region with both Kondo screening and antiferromagnetic orders in the intermediate coupling regime. In addition, the stability of Kondo insulator requires a minimum strength of the Kondo coupling. These features are attributed to the linear density of state, which are absent in the square lattice. Furthermore, fluctuation effect beyond the mean-field decoupling is analyzed and the corresponding antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition falls into the O(3) universal class. Comparatively, we also discuss the Kondo necklace and the Kane-Mele-Kondo (KMK) lattice models on the same lattice. Interestingly, it is found that the topological insulating state is unstable to the usual antiferromagnetic ordered states at half-filling for the KMK model. The present work may be helpful for further studies on the interplay between conduction electrons and the densely localized spins on the honeycomb lattice.

Orthogonal Dirac semimetal on honeycomb lattice and the electron spectral function in orthogonal metallic states

Recently, a concept of orthogonal metal has been introduced to reinterpret the disordered state of slave-spin representation in the Hubbard model as an exotic gapped metallic state. We have extended this concept to study the slave-spin representation of Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice.[Phys. Rev. B \textbf{86}, 165134 (2012)] It is found that a novel gapped metallic state coined orthogonal Dirac semimetal is identified. Such state corresponds to the disordered phase of slave-spin and has the same thermal-dynamical and transport properties as Dirac semimetal but its singe-particle excitation is gapped. More importantly, for generical orthogonal metallic states, the electron spectral function which may be probed in future angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments are studied.

Topological antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave phase in an extended Kondo lattice model

By using an extended mean-field theory, we study the phase diagram of the topological Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling in which the conduction electrons are described by the Haldane model. Besides the well-defined Kondo insulator and normal antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (N-SDW) state, it is found that a nontrivial topological antiferromagnetic SDW state (T-SDW) with a quantized Hall conductance is possible if the quasiparticle gap is dominated by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping rather than the antiferromagnetic order. By analyzing the low-energy effective Chern-Simon action and the corresponding chiral edge state, the T-SDW could be considered as a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with antiferromagnetic long-range order. This state is apparently beyond Landau-Ginzburg paradigm, which can be attributed to the interplay of quantum anomalous Hall effect and the subtle antiferromagnetic order in the Kondo-lattice-like model. While the transition between the SDW states and the Kondo insulator is found to be conventional (a first order transition), the transition between the N- and T-SDWs is, however, a topological quantum phase transition. Interestingly, such topological quantum phase transition can be described by Dirac fermions coupled to a U (1)Chern-Simon gauge field, which resembles the critical theory between bosonic integer quantum Hall phases and superfluid phase and also indicates that such a topological quantum phase transition may fall into the 3D-XY universal class. It is expected that the present work may shed light on the interplay between conduction electrons and the densely localized spins on the honeycomb lattice.

Correlated metallic state in honeycomb lattice: Orthogonal Dirac semimetal

A novel gapped metallic state coined orthogonal Dirac semimetal is proposed in the honeycomb lattice in terms of $Z_{2}$ slave-spin representation of Hubbard model. This state corresponds to the disordered phase of slave-spin and has the same thermaldynamical and transport properties as usual Dirac semimetal but its singe-particle excitation is gapped and has nontrivial topological order due to the $Z_{2}$ gauge structure. The quantum phase transition from this orthogonal Dirac semimetal to usual Dirac semimetal is described by a mean-field decoupling with complementary fluctuation analysis and its criticality falls into the universality class of 2+1D Ising model while a large anomalous dimension for the physical electron is found at quantum critical point (QCP), which could be considered as a fingerprint of our fractionalized theory when compared to other non-fractionalized approaches. As byproducts, a path integral formalism for the $Z_{2}$ slave-spin representation of Hubbard model is constructed and possible relations to other approaches and the sublattice pairing states, which has been argued to be a promising candidate for gapped spin liquid state found in the numerical simulation, are briefly discussed. Additionally, when spin-orbit coupling is considered, the instability of orthogonal Dirac semimetal to the fractionalized quantum spin Hall insulator (fractionalized topological insulator) is also expected. We hope the present work may be helpful for future studies in $Z_{2}$ slave-spin theory and related non-Fermi liquid phases in honeycomb lattice.

Alternative Kondo breakdown mechanism: Orbital-selective orthogonal metal transition

In a recent paper of Nandkishore and Senthil [arxiv:1201.5998 (2012)], a concept of orthogonal metal has been introduced to reinterpret the disordered state of slave-spin representation in the Hubbard model as an exotic gapped metallic state. We extend this concept to study the corresponding quantum phase transition in the extended Anderson lattice model. It is found that the disordered state of slave spins in this model is an orbital-selective orthogonal metal, a generalization of the concept of the orthogonal metal in the Hubbard model. Near the quantum critical point the essential behaviors are dominated by a z = 3 critical mode, which is in contrast to the naive expectation in the Hubbard model. The result provides alternative Kondo breakdown mechanism for heavy fermion compounds underlying the physics of the orbital-selective orthogonal metal in the disordered state, which is different from the conventional Kondo breakdown mechanism with the fractionalized Fermi liquid picture. This work is expected to be useful in understanding the quantum criticality happening in some heavy fermion materials and other related strongly correlated systems.

Two-dimensional confinement of critical U(1) gauge field in the presence of Fermi surface

The compact U(1) gauge field occurs in many fractionalized descriptions of low dimensional quantum magnetism and heavy fermion systems. In this respect a fundamental question about the gauge field is whether it is confined or not in the presence of Fermi surface. In this paper we show that the U(1) gauge field with a possible positive anomalous dimension in the presence of Fermi surface has to be in the confined state, although it is strongly coupled to abundant gapless fermionic excitations near the Fermi surface in two spatial dimensions. This means that some quantum spin liquids and/or fractionalized metallic states described in terms of this kind of gauge fields with positive anomalous dimensions are unstable to other possible symmetry-breaking states, as a result, they are not be appropriate candidates for ground states in related systems. The instability obtained shows some novel features of the quantum spin liquids and/or fractionalized metallic states in the presence of Fermi surface which have not been reported in the literature. The result could be useful for further study in the quantum spin liquids and many related slave-particle gauge theories in strongly correlated electron systems.

Compensation effect in carbon nanotube quantum dots coupled to polarized electrodes in the presence of spin-orbit coupling

We study theoretically the Kondo effect in carbon nanotube quantum dot attached to polarized electrodes. Since both spin and orbit degrees of freedom are involved in such a system, the electrode polarization contains the spin- and orbit-polarizations as well as the Kramers polarization in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. In this paper we focus on the compensation effect of the effective fields induced by different polarizations by applying magnetic field. The main results are i) while the effective fields induced by the spin- and orbit-polarizations remove the degeneracy in the Kondo effect, the effective field induced by the Kramers polarization enhances the degeneracy through suppressing the spin-orbit coupling; ii) while the effective field induced by the spin-polarization can not be compensated by applying magnetic field, the effective field induced by the orbit-polarization can be compensated; and iii) the presence of the spin-orbit coupling does not change the compensation behavior observed in the case without the spin-orbit coupling. These results are observable in an ultraclean carbon-nanotube quantum dot attached to ferromagnetic contacts under a parallel applied magnetic field along the tube axis and it would deepen our understanding on the Kondo physics of the carbon nanotube quantum dot.

Kondo effect of an adatom in graphene and its scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We study the Kondo effect of a single magnetic adatom on the surface of graphene. It was shown that the unique linear dispersion relation near the Dirac points in graphene makes it more easy to form the local magnetic moment, which simply means that the Kondo resonance can be observed in a more wider parameter region than in the metallic host. The result indicates that the Kondo resonance indeed can form ranged from the Kondo regime, to the mixed valence, even to the empty orbital regime. While the Kondo resonance displays as a sharp peak in the first regime, it has a peak-dip structure and/or an anti-resonance in the remaining two regimes, which result from the Fano resonance due to the significant background leaded by dramatically broadening of the impurity level in graphene. We also study the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra of the adatom and they show obvious particle-hole asymmetry when the chemical potential is tuned by the gate voltages applied to the graphene. Finally, we explore the influence of the direct tunneling channel between the STM tip and the graphene on the Kondo resonance and find that the lineshape of the Kondo resonance is unaffected, which can be attributed to unusual large asymmetry factor in graphene. Our study indicates that the graphene is an ideal platform to study systematically the Kondo physics and these results are useful to further stimulate the relevant experimental studies on the system.

Inhomogeneity of the phase space of the damped harmonic oscillator under Levy noise

The damped harmonic oscillator under symmetric Lévy white noise shows inhomogeneous phase space, which is in contrast to the homogeneous one of the same oscillator under the Gaussian white noise, as shown in a recent paper [I. M. Sokolov, W. Ebeling, and B. Dybiec, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{83}, 041118 (2011)]. The inhomogeneity of the phase space shows certain correlation between the coordinate and the velocity of the damped oscillator under symmetric Lévy white noise. In the present work we further explore the physical origin of these distinguished features and find that it is due to the combination of the damped effect and heavy tail of the noise. We demonstrate directly this in the reduced coordinate $\tilde{x}$ versus velocity $\tilde{v}$ plots and identify the physics of the anti-association of the coordinate and velocity.

Extended dual description of Mott transition beyond two-dimensional space

Motivated by recent work of Mross and Senthil [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{84}, 165126 (2011)] which provides a dual description for Mott transition from Fermi liquid to quantum spin liquid in two space dimensions, we extend their approach to higher dimensional cases, and we provide explicit formalism in three space dimensions. Instead of the vortices driving conventional Fermi liquid into quantum spin liquid states in 2D, it is the vortex lines to lead to the instability of Fermi liquid in 3D. The extended formalism can result in rich consequences when the vortex lines condense in different degrees of freedom. For example, when the vortex lines condense in charge phase degrees of freedom, the resulting effective fermionic action is found to be equivalent to that obtained by well-studied slave-particle approaches for Hubbard and/or Anderson lattice models, which confirm the validity of the extended dual formalism in 3D. When the vortex lines condense in spin phase degrees of freedom, a doublon metal with a spin gap and an instability to the unconventional superconducting pairing can be obtained. In addition, when the vortex lines condense in both phase degrees, an exotic doubled U(1) gauge theory occurs which describes a separation of spin-opposite fermionic excitations. It is noted that the first two features have been discussed in a similar way in 2D, the last one has not been reported in the previous works. The present work is expected to be useful in understanding the Mott transition happening beyond two space dimensions.

Quantum phase transition in the delocalized regime of the spin-boson model

The existence of the delocalized-localized quantum phase transition (QPT) in the ohmic spin-boson model has been commonly recognized. While the physics in the localized regime is relatively simple, the delocalized regime shows many interesting behaviors. Here we reveal that in this regime there exists a novel QPT: namely, from a phase without a bound state to a phase with a bound state, which leads to completely different dynamical behaviors in these two phases. If the reservoir is initially in the displaced vacuum state (i.e., the coherent state), the spin dynamics exhibits lossless oscillation when the bound state exists; otherwise, the oscillation will decay completely. This result is compatible with the coherence-incoherence transition occurring in the small-tunneling limit. Our work indicates that the QPT physics in the spin-boson model needs further exploration.

Entanglement distribution over the subsystems and its invariance

We study the entanglement dynamics of two qubits, each of which is embedded into its local amplitude-damping reservoir, and the entanglement distribution among all the bipartite subsystems including qubit-qubit, qubit-reservoir, and reservoir-reservoir. It is found that the entanglement can be stably distributed among all components, which is much different to the result obtained under the Born-Markovian approximation by C. E. López {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 080503 (2008)], and particularly it also satisfies an identity. Our unified treatment includes the previous results as special cases. The result may give help to understand the physical nature of entanglement under decoherence.
