Nonequilibrium dynamical transition process between excited states of holographic superconductors

We study the dynamics of the holographic $s$-wave superconductors described by the Einstein-Maxwell-complex scalar field theory with a negative cosmological constant. If the eigenfunction of the linearized equation of motion of the scalar field in the planar RNAdS black hole background is chosen as the initial data, the bulk system will evolve to the intermediate state that corresponds to the excited state superconductor on the boundary. The process can be regarded as the non-equilibrium condensation process of the excited state of holographic superconductor. When the linear superposition of the eigenfunctions is chosen as the initial data, the system will go through a series of the intermediate states corresponding to different overtone numbers, which can be regarded as the dynamical transition process between the excited states of holographic superconductor. Because the intermediate states are metastable, the bulk system eventually evolves to the stationary state that corresponds the ground state of the holographic superconductor. We also provide a global and physical picture of the evolution dynamics of the black hole and the corresponding superconducting phase transition from the funneled landscape view, quantifying the weights of the states and characterizing the transitions and cascades towards the ground state.

Generation of vortices and stabilization of vortex lattices in holographic superfluids

Within the simplest holographic superfluid model and without any ingredients put by hand, it is shown that vortices can be generated when the angular velocity of rotating superfluids exceeds certain critical values, which can be precisely determined by linear perturbation analyses (quasi-normal modes of the bulk AdS black brane). These vortices appear at the edge of the superfluid system first, and then automatically move into the bulk of the system, where they are eventually stabilized into certain vortex lattices. For the case of 18 vortices generated, we find (at least) five different patterns of the final lattices formed due to different initial perturbations, which can be compared to the known result for such lattices in weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates from free energy analyses.

Dynamical Phase Transition from Nonequilibrium Dynamics of Dark Solitons

By holographic duality, we identify a novel dynamical phase transition which results from the temperature dependence of non-equilibrium dynamics of dark solitons in a superfluid. For a non-equilibrium superfluid system with an initial density of dark solitons, there exists a critical temperature $T_d$,above which the system relaxes to equilibrium by producing sound waves, while below which it goes through an intermediate phase with a finite density of vortex-antivortex pairs. In particular, as $T_d$ is approached from below, the density of vortex pairs scales as $(T_d - T)^γ$ with the critical exponent $γ= 1/2$.

Constraining Chaplygin models using diffuse supernova neutrino background

In this work, we examine the possibility of using the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) to test the Chaplygin gas (CG) models of the Universe. With a typical supernova rate $R_{\mathrm{SN}}(z)$ and supernova neutrino spectrum $\mathrm{d} N(E_ν)/\mathrm{d} E_ν$, the DSNB flux spectrum $n(E_ν)$ in three categories of CG models, the generalized CG (GCG), modified CG (MCG) and extended CG (ECG) models, are studied. It is found that generally the flux spectra take a form similar to a Fermi-Dirac distribution with a peak centered around 3.80-3.97 MeV. The spectrum shape and peak positions are primarily determined by $R_{\mathrm{SN}}(z)$ and $\mathrm{d} N(E_ν)/\mathrm{d} E_ν$ and only slightly affected by the CG models. However, the height of the spectra in each category of the CG models can vary dramatically for different models, with variances of 13.2%, 23.6% and 14.9% for GCG, MCG and ECG categories respectively. The averaged total flux in each category are also different, with the ECG model average 10.0% and 12.7% higher than that of the GCG and MCG models. These suggest that the DSNB flux spectrum height and total flux can be used to constrain the CG model parameters, and if the measured to a sub-10% accuracy, might be used to rule out some models.

Strong cosmic censorship for the Dirac field in the higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom--de Sitter black hole

We investigate the strong cosmic censorship for the Dirac field in the higher dimensional Reissner-Norstrom--de Sitter black hole. To achieve this, we first use the conformal transformation trick to massage the Dirac equation to a pair of coupled equations in a meticulously chosen orthonormal basis and derive the criterion on the quasinormal modes for the violation of the strong cosmic censorship, which turns out to be independent of the spacetime dimension. Then we apply the Crank-Nicolson method to evolve our Dirac equation in the double null coordinates and extract the low-lying quasinormal modes from the evolution data by the Prony method. It is shown for the spacetime dimension $D=4, 5, 6$ under consideration that although the strong cosmic censorship is violated by the perturbation from the neutral Dirac field in the near-extremal black hole, the strong cosmic censorship can be restored when the charge of the Dirac field is increased beyond a critical value. The closer to the extremal limit the black hole is, the larger the critical charge of the Dirac field is.

Strong cosmic censorship in de Sitter space: As strong as ever

The strong cosmic censorship has recently been put into question for the charged black holes in de Sitter space. We have performed the full non-linear evolution of the massless charged scalar field minimally coupled to the Einstein-Maxwell system in de Sitter space, and found that the non-linear effect can restore the strong cosmic censorship, making it as strong as ever.

Black and gray solitons in holographic superfluids at zero temperature

We construct gray soliton configurations, which move at constant speeds, in holographic superfluids for the first time. Since there should be no dissipation for a moving soliton to exist, we use the simplest holographic superfluid model at zero temperature, considering both the standard and alternative quantizations. For comparison purpose, we first investigate black solitons in the zero temperature holographic superfluids, which are static configurations. Then we focus on the numerical construction of gray solitons under both quantizations, which interpolate between the (static) black solitons and sound waves (moving at the speed of sound). Interestingly, under the standard quantization, a peculiar oscillation of the soliton configurations is observed, very much resembling the Friedel oscillation in fermionic superfluids at the BCS regime. Some implications and other aspects of the soliton configurations are also discussed.

Strong Cosmic Censorship in higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter spacetime

It was recently shown that Strong Cosmic Censorship might be violated for near-extremally-charged black holes in 4-dimensional de Sitter space under scalar perturbations. Here, we extend the study of neutral massless scalar perturbations in higher dimensions and discuss the dimensional influence on the validity of Strong Cosmic Censorship hypothesis. By giving an elaborate description of neutral massless scalar perturbations of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes in $d=4,5$ and $6$ dimensions we conclude that Strong Cosmic Censorship is violated near extremality.

Surface term, corner term, and action growth in F(Riemann) gravity theory

After reformulating $F($Riemann$)$ gravity theory as a second derivative theory by introducing two auxiliary fields to the bulk action, we derive the surface term as well as the corner term supplemented to the bulk action for a generic non-smooth boundary such that the variational principle is well posed. We also introduce the counter term to make the boundary term invariant under the reparametrization for the null segment. Then as a demonstration of the power of our formalism, not only do we apply our expression for the full action to evaluate the corresponding action growth rate of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch in the Schwarzchild anti-de Sitter black hole for the $F(R)$ gravity and critical gravity, where the corresponding late time behavior recovers the previous one derived by other approaches, but also in the asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black hole for the critical Einsteinian cubic gravity, where the late time growth rate vanishes but still saturates the Lloyd bound.

Strong cosmic censorship for the massless Dirac field in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime

We present the Fermi story of strong cosmic censorship in the near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. To this end, we first derive from scratch the criterion for the quasi-normal modes of Dirac field to violate strong cosmic censorship in such a background, which turns out to be exactly the same as those for Bose fields, although the involved energy momentum tensor is qualitatively different from that for Bose fields. Then to extract the low-lying quasi-normal modes by Prony method, we apply Crank-Nicolson method to evolve our Dirac field in the double null coordinates. As a result, it shows that for a fixed near-extremal black hole, strong cosmic censorship can be recovered by the $l=\frac{1}{2}$ black hole family mode once the charge of our Dirac field is greater than some critical value, which is increased as one approaches the extremal black hole.

Strong cosmic censorship for the massless charged scalar field in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime

It has recently been shown that the strong cosmic censorship conjecture can be violated by the massless neutral scalar field in the nearly extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. However, the formation of such a black hole by gravitational collapse necessitates the presence of the charged sector on top of the Einstein-Maxwell system. Thus we numerically calculate the quasi-normal modes for a massless charged scalar field in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime by generalizing the characteristic formulation to the charged case. As a result, the strong cosmic censorship turns out to be recovered by our massless charged scalar field except in the highly extremal limit $Q\rightarrow Q_m$, where the violation still occurs when the scalar field is appropriately charged.

Missing Value Imputation Based on Deep Generative Models

Missing values widely exist in many real-world datasets, which hinders the performing of advanced data analytics. Properly filling these missing values is crucial but challenging, especially when the missing rate is high. Many approaches have been proposed for missing value imputation (MVI), but they are mostly heuristics-based, lacking a principled foundation and do not perform satisfactorily in practice. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework based on deep generative models for MVI. Under this framework, imputing the missing entries amounts to seeking a fixed-point solution between two conditional distributions defined on the missing entries and latent variables respectively. These distributions are parameterized by deep neural networks (DNNs) which possess high approximation power and can capture the nonlinear relationships between missing entries and the observed values. The learning of weight parameters of DNNs is performed by maximizing an approximation of the log-likelihood of observed values. We conducted extensive evaluation on 13 datasets and compared with 11 baselines methods, where our methods largely outperforms the baselines.

5-dimensional Myers-Perry Black Holes Cannot be Over-spun by Gedanken Experiments

We apply the new version of gedanken experiment designed recently by Sorce and Wald, to over-spin the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes. As a result, the extremal black holes cannot be over-spun at the linear order. On the other hand, although the nearly extremal black holes could be over-spun at the linear order, this process is shown to be prohibited by the quadratic order correction. Thus no violation of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture occurs around the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes.

Predicting Discharge Medications at Admission Time Based on Deep Learning

Predicting discharge medications right after a patient being admitted is an important clinical decision, which provides physicians with guidance on what type of medication regimen to plan for and what possible changes on initial medication may occur during an inpatient stay. It also facilitates medication reconciliation process with easy detection of medication discrepancy at discharge time to improve patient safety. However, since the information available upon admission is limited and patients' condition may evolve during an inpatient stay, these predictions could be a difficult decision for physicians to make. In this work, we investigate how to leverage deep learning technologies to assist physicians in predicting discharge medications based on information documented in the admission note. We build a convolutional neural network which takes an admission note as input and predicts the medications placed on the patient at discharge time. Our method is able to distill semantic patterns from unstructured and noisy texts, and is capable of capturing the pharmacological correlations among medications. We evaluate our method on 25K patient visits and compare with 4 strong baselines. Our methods demonstrate a 20% increase in macro-averaged F1 score than the best baseline.

Learning Less-Overlapping Representations

In representation learning (RL), how to make the learned representations easy to interpret and less overfitted to training data are two important but challenging issues. To address these problems, we study a new type of regulariza- tion approach that encourages the supports of weight vectors in RL models to have small overlap, by simultaneously promoting near-orthogonality among vectors and sparsity of each vector. We apply the proposed regularizer to two models: neural networks (NNs) and sparse coding (SC), and develop an efficient ADMM-based algorithm for regu- larized SC. Experiments on various datasets demonstrate that weight vectors learned under our regularizer are more interpretable and have better generalization performance.

Soft hairs on isolated horizon implanted by electromagnetic fields

Inspired by the recent proposal of soft hair on black holes in Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 231301 (2016), we have shown that an isolated horizon carries soft hairs implanted by electromagnetic fields. The solution space and the asymptotic symmetries of Einstein-Maxwell theory have been worked out explicitly near isolated horizon. The conserved current has been computed and an infinite number of near horizon charges have been introduced from the electromagnetic fields associated to the asymptotic $U(1)$ symmetry near the horizon, which indicates the fact that isolated horizon carries a large amount of soft electric hairs. The soft electric hairs, i.e. asymptotic $U(1)$ charges, are shown to be equivalent to the electric multipole moments of isolated horizons. It is further argued that the isolated horizon supertranslation is from the ambiguity of its foliation and an analogue of memory effect on horizon can be expected.

From Prigogine to Raychaudhuri

It is highlighted by Prigogine that there are two additional universal behaviors associated with the entropy production rate besides the four laws of thermodynamics. One is that the entropy production rate decreases when the system approaches the steady state, and the other is that the entropy production rate reaches its minimal value at the steady state. Motivated by the black hole thermodynamics and AdS/CFT correspondence, we resort to Raychaudhuri equation to prove that these two universal behaviors are also obeyed by the black hole entropy. In particular, our result together with the four laws of black hole thermodynamics further indicates that the holographic gravity should be universal, not restricted only within the context of AdS/CFT correspondence.

Phase transition of holographic entanglement entropy in massive gravity

The phase structure of holographic entanglement entropy is studied in massive gravity for the quantum systems with finite and infinite volumes, which in the bulk is dual to calculate the minimal surface area for a black hole and black brane respectively. In the entanglement entropy$-$temperature plane, we find for both the black hole and black brane there is a Van der Waals-like phase transition as the case in thermal entropy$-$temperature plane. That is, there is a first order phase transition for the small charge and a second order phase transition at the critical charge. For the first order phase transition, the equal area law is checked and for the second order phase transition, the critical exponent of the heat capacity is obtained. All the results show that the phase structure of holographic entanglement entropy is the same as that of thermal entropy regardless of the volume of the spacetime on the boundary.
