WP-MIP: An Artificial Intelligence, Hybrid, and Physically Based Model Intercomparison Project for Weather Prediction

Rapid progress in the field of machine-learning for weather prediction has led to the emergence of algorithms whose forecasting skill can exceed that of traditional physically based models. This development represents an opportunity to improve the quality of forecasting services provided by operational centers, particularly given the speed at which machine-learning based models generate predictions. Despite the clear promise of these systems, questions remain about the ability of the current generation of machine-learning models to generate physically consistent predictions of the full suite of required forecast fields under all conditions. Answering these questions will require careful comparisons between the well-understood physically based models, current state-of-the-art machine-learning models, and the hybrid models that combine elements of these two archetypes. The Weather Prediction Model Intercomparison Project (WP-MIP) is a World Meteorological Organization-supported initiative whose initial goal is to create a centralized database of physically based, machine-learning, and hybrid model forecasts to enable a distributed assessment and evaluation effort. The first instance of WP-MIP focuses on global deterministic predictions using both center-specific and common initializations to facilitate sensitivity studies. Forecasts contributed by institutions across six continents will be used to develop AI-ready verification techniques that highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each class of prediction system, with the goal of establishing best-practice guidance to model developers and national weather centers. The broad engagement of the operational and forecast-evaluation communities in WP-MIP will ensure that the project results are highly relevant to the development and deployment of next-generation weather prediction systems.

Harnessing Large Vision and Language Models in Agriculture: A Review

Large models can play important roles in many domains. Agriculture is another key factor affecting the lives of people around the world. It provides food, fabric, and coal for humanity. However, facing many challenges such as pests and diseases, soil degradation, global warming, and food security, how to steadily increase the yield in the agricultural sector is a problem that humans still need to solve. Large models can help farmers improve production efficiency and harvest by detecting a series of agricultural production tasks such as pests and diseases, soil quality, and seed quality. It can also help farmers make wise decisions through a variety of information, such as images, text, etc. Herein, we delve into the potential applications of large models in agriculture, from large language model (LLM) and large vision model (LVM) to large vision-language models (LVLM). After gaining a deeper understanding of multimodal large language models (MLLM), it can be recognized that problems such as agricultural image processing, agricultural question answering systems, and agricultural machine automation can all be solved by large models. Large models have great potential in the field of agriculture. We outline the current applications of agricultural large models, and aims to emphasize the importance of large models in the domain of agriculture. In the end, we envisage a future in which famers use MLLM to accomplish many tasks in agriculture, which can greatly improve agricultural production efficiency and yield.

Multitype entanglement dynamics induced by exceptional points

As a most important feature of non-Hermitian systems, exceptional points (EPs) lead to a variety of unconventional phenomena and applications. Here, we study a generic model composed of two coupled non-Hermitian qubits, the EPs can be easily obtained in this system by adjusting the driving amplitude applied to the qubits. The diverse entanglement dynamics on the two sides of the original fourth-order EP (EP4') and second order EP (EP2) can be observed simultaneously in the weak coupling regime. With the increase of the coupling strength, the EP4' is replaced by an additional EP2, leading to the disappearance of the entanglement dynamics changing induced by EP4' in the strong coupling regime. Considering the case of Ising type interaction, we also realize EP-induced entanglement dynamics changing without the driving field. Our study paves the way for the investigation of EP-induced quantum effects and applications of EP-related quantum technologies.

Commissioning of te China-ADS injector-I testing facility

The 10 MeV accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) Injector-I test stand at Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) is a testing facility dedicated to demonstrate one of the two injector design schemes [Injector Scheme-I, which works at 325 MHz], for the ADS project in China. The Injector adopted a four vane copper structure RFQ with output energy of 3.2 MeV and a superconducting (SC) section accommodating fourteen \b{eta}g=0.12 single spoke cavities, fourteen SC solenoids and fourteen cold BPMs. The ion source was installed since April of 2014, periods of commissioning are regularly scheduled between installation phases of the rest of the injector. Continuous wave (CW) beam was shooting through the injector and 10 MeV CW proton beam with average beam current around 2 mA was obtained recently. This contribution describe the results achieved so far and the difficulties encountered in CW commissioning.
