On Calderón's inverse inclusion problem with smooth shapes by a single partial boundary measurement

We are concerned with the Calderón inverse inclusion problem, where one intends to recover the shape of an inhomogeneous conductive inclusion embedded in a homogeneous conductivity by the associated boundary measurements. We consider the highly challenging case with a single partial boundary measurement, which constitutes a long-standing open problem in the literature. It is shown in several existing works that corner singularities can help to resolve the uniqueness and stability issues for this inverse problem. In this paper, we show that the corner singularity can be relaxed to be a certain high-curvature condition and derive a novel local unique determination result. To our best knowledge, this is the first (local) uniqueness result in determining a conductive inclusions with general smooth shapes by a single (partial) boundary measurement.

On the geometric structures of transmission eigenfunctions with a conductive boundary condition and applications

This paper is concerned with the intrinsic geometric structures of conductive transmission eigenfunctions. The geometric properties of interior transmission eigenfunctions were first studied in [9]. It is shown in two scenarios that the interior transmission eigenfunction must be locally vanishing near a corner of the domain with an interior angle less than $π$. We significantly extend and generalize those results in several aspects. First, we consider the conductive transmission eigenfunctions which include the interior transmission eigenfunctions as a special case. The geometric structures established for the conductive transmission eigenfunctions in this paper include the results in [9] as a special case. Second, the vanishing property of the conductive transmission eigenfunctions is established for any corner as long as its interior angle is not $π$ when the conductive transmission eigenfunctions satisfy certain Herglotz functions approximation properties. That means, as long as the corner singularity is not degenerate, the vanishing property holds if the underlying conductive transmission eigenfunctions can be approximated by a sequence of Herglotz functions under mild approximation rates. Third, the regularity requirements on the interior transmission eigenfunctions in [9] are significantly relaxed in the present study for the conductive transmission eigenfunctions. Finally, as an interesting and practical application of the obtained geometric results, we establish a unique recovery result for the inverse problem associated with the transverse electromagnetic scattering by a single far-field measurement in simultaneously determining a polygonal conductive obstacle and its surface conductive parameter.

Unique continuation from a generalized impedance edge-corner for Maxwell's system and applications to inverse problems

We consider the time-harmonic Maxwell system in a domain with a generalized impedance edge-corner, namely the presence of two generalized impedance planes that intersect at an edge. The impedance parameter can be $0, \infty$ or a finite non-identically vanishing variable function. We establish an accurate relationship between the vanishing order of the solutions to the Maxwell system and the dihedral angle of the edge-corner. In particular, if the angle is irrational, the vanishing order is infinity, i.e. strong unique continuation holds from the edge-corner. The establishment of those new quantitative results involve a highly intricate and subtle algebraic argument. The unique continuation study is strongly motivated by our study of a longstanding inverse electromagnetic scattering problem. As a significant application, we derive several novel unique identifiability results in determining a polyhedral obstacle as well as it surface impedance by a single far-field measurement. We also discuss another potential and interesting application of our result in the inverse scattering theory related to the information encoding.

Determining a piecewise conductive medium body by a single far-field measurement

We are concerned with the inverse problem of recovering a conductive medium body. The conductive medium body arises in several applications of practical importance, including the modeling of an electromagnetic object coated with a thin layer of a highly conducting material and the magnetotellurics in geophysics. We consider the determination of the material parameters inside the body as well as on the conductive interface by the associated electromagnetic far-field measurement. Under the transverse-magnetic polarisation, we derive two novel unique identifiability results in determining a 2D piecewise conductive medium body associated with a polygonal-nest or a polygonal-cell geometry by a single active or passive far-field measurement.

Recovering piecewise constant refractive indices by a single far-field pattern

We are concerned with the inverse scattering problem of recovering an inhomogeneous medium by the associated acoustic wave measurement. We prove that under certain assumptions, a single far-field pattern determines the values of a perturbation to the refractive index on the corners of its support. These assumptions are satisfied for example in the low acoustic frequency regime. As a consequence if the perturbation is piecewise constant with either a polyhedral nest geometry or a known polyhedral cell geometry, such as a pixel or voxel array, we establish the injectivity of the perturbation to far-field map given a fixed incident wave. This is the first unique determinancy result of its type in the literature, and all of the existing results essentially make use of infinitely many measurements.

Determining a random Schrödinger operator: both potential and source are random

We study an inverse scattering problem associated with a Schrödinger system where both the potential and source terms are random and unknown. The well-posedness of the forward scattering problem is first established in a proper sense. We then derive two unique recovery results in determining the rough strengths of the random source and the random potential, by using the corresponding far-field data. The first recovery result shows that a single realization of the passive scattering measurements uniquely recovers the rough strength of the random source. The second one shows that, by a single realization of the backscattering data, the rough strength of the random potential can be recovered. The ergodicity is used to establish the single realization recovery. The asymptotic arguments in our study are based on the theories of pseudodifferential operators and microlocal analysis.

On generalized Holmgren's principle to the Lamé operator with applications to inverse elastic problems

Consider the Lamé operator $\mathcal{L}(\mathbf{ u} ) :=μΔ\mathbf{u}+(λ+μ) \nabla(\nabla \cdot \mathbf{ u} )$ that arises in the theory of linear elasticity. This paper studies the geometric properties of the (generalized) Lamé eigenfunction $\mathbf{u}$, namely $-\mathcal{L}(\mathbf{ u} )=κ\mathbf{ u}$ with $κ\in\mathbb{R}_+$ and $\mathbf{ u}\in L^2(Ω)^2$, $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. We introduce the so-called homogeneous line segments of $\mathbf{u}$ in $Ω$, on which $\mathbf{u}$, its traction or their combination via an impedance parameter is vanishing. We give a comprehensive study on characterizing the presence of one or two such line segments and its implication to the uniqueness of $\mathbf{u}$. The results can be regarded as generalizing the classical Holmgren's uniqueness principle for the Lamé operator in two aspects. We establish the results by analyzing the development of analytic microlocal singularities of $\mathbf{u}$ with the presence of the aforesaid line segments. Finally, we apply the results to the inverse elastic problems in establishing two novel unique identifiability results. It is shown that a generalized impedance obstacle as well as its boundary impedance can be determined by using at most four far-field patterns. Unique determination by a minimal number of far-field patterns is a longstanding problem in inverse elastic scattering theory.

One-Stage Inpainting with Bilateral Attention and Pyramid Filling Block

Recent deep learning based image inpainting methods which utilize contextual information and two-stage architecture have exhibited remarkable performance. However, the two-stage architecture is time-consuming, the contextual information lack high-level semantics and ignores both the semantic relevance and distance information of hole's feature patches, these limitations result in blurry textures and distorted structures of final result. Motivated by these observations, we propose a new deep generative model-based approach, which trains a shared network twice with different targets and utilizes a single network during the testing phase, so that we can effectively save inference time. Specifically, the targets of two training steps are structure reconstruction and texture generation respectively. During the second training, we first propose a Pyramid Filling Block (PF-block) to utilize the high-level features that the hole regions has been filled to guide the filling process of low-level features progressively, the missing content can be filled from deep to shallow in a pyramid fashion. Then, inspired by the classical bilateral filter [30], we propose the Bilateral Attention layer (BA-layer) to optimize filled feature map, which synthesizes feature patches at each position by computing weighted sums of the surrounding feature patches, these weights are derived by considering both distance and value relationships between feature patches, thus making the visually plausible inpainting results. Finally, experiments on multiple publicly available datasets show the superior performance of our approach.

Spectral properties of Neumann-Poincare operator and anomalous localized resonance in elasticity beyond quasi-static limit

This paper is concerned with the polariton resonances and their application for cloaking due to anomalous localized resonance (CALR) for the elastic system within the finite frequency regime beyond the quasi-static approximation. We first derive the complete spectral system of the Neumann-Poincaré operator associated with the elastic system within the finite frequency regime. Based on the obtained spectral results, we construct a broad class of elastic configurations that can induce polariton resonances beyond the quasi-static limit. As an application, the invisibility cloaking effect is achieved through constructing a class of core-shell-matrix metamaterial structures provided the source is located inside a critical radius. Moreover, if the source is located outside the critical radius, it is proved that there is no resonance.

On nodal and generalized singular structures of Laplacian eigenfunctions and applications in $\mathbb{R}^3$

This paper is a continuation and an extension of our recent work [3] on the geometric structures of Laplacian eigenfunctions and their applications to inverse scattering problems. In [3], the analytic behaviour of the Laplacian eigenfunctions is investigated at a point where two nodal or generalised singular lines intersect. It reveals a certain intriguing property that the vanishing order of the eigenfunction at the intersecting point is related to the rationality of the intersecting angle. In this paper, we consider the 3D counterpart of such a study by studying the analytic behaviours of the Laplacian eigenfunctions at places where nodal or generalised singular planes are intersect. Compared to the 2D case, the geometric situation is more complicated: the intersection of two planes generates an edge corner, whereas the intersection of more than three planes generates a vertex corner. We provide a comprehensive characterisation for all of those cases. Moreover, we apply the spectral results to establish some novel unique identifiability results for the geometric inverse problems of recovering the shape as well as the (possible) surface impedance parameter by the associated scattering far-field measurements.

On an electromagnetic problem in a corner and its applications

Let $\mathcal{K}^{r_0}_{x_0}$ be a (non-degenerate) truncated corner in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with $x_0\in\mathbb{R}^3$ being its apex, and $\mathbf{F}_j\in C^α(\overline{\mathcal{K}^{r_0}_{x_0}}; \mathbb{C}^3)$, $j=1,2$, where $α$ is the positive Hölder index. Consider the following electromagnetic problem $$\left\{\begin{split} & \nabla\wedge \mathbf{E}-\mathrm{i}ωμ_0 \mathbf{H}=\mathbf{F}_{1} \quad \mbox{in $\mathcal{K}^{r_0}_{x_0}$},\\ & \, \nabla\wedge \mathbf{H}+\mathrm{i}ω\varepsilon_0 \mathbf{E}=\mathbf{F}_{2} \quad \mbox{in $\mathcal{K}^{r_0}_{x_0}$}, \\ &\, ν\wedge \mathbf{E}=ν\wedge\mathbf{H}=0 \qquad\mbox{on $\partial \mathcal{K}^{r_0}_{x_0}\setminus \partial B_{r_0}(x_0)$}, \end{split}\right.$$ where $ν$ denotes the exterior unit normal vector of $\partial \mathcal{K}^{r_0}_{x_0}$. We prove that $\mathbf{F}_1$ and $\mathbf{F}_2$ must vanish at the apex $x_0$. There are a series of interesting consequences of this vanishing property in several separate but intriguingly connected topics in electromagnetism. First, we can geometrically characterize non-radiating sources in time-harmonic electromagnetic scattering. Secondly, we consider the inverse source scattering problem for time-harmonic electromagnetic waves and establish the uniqueness result in determining the polyhedral support of a source by a single far-field measurement. Thirdly, we derive a property of the geometric structure of electromagnetic interior transmission eigenfunctions near corners. Finally, we also discuss its implication to invisibility cloaking.

Determining a random Schrödinger equation with unknown source and potential

We are concerned with the direct and inverse scattering problems associated with a time-harmonic random Schrödinger equation with unknown source and potential terms. The well-posedness of the direct scattering problem is first established. Three uniqueness results are then obtained for the corresponding inverse problems in determining the variance of the source, the potential and the expectation of the source, respectively, by the associated far-field measurements. First, a single realization of the passive scattering measurement can uniquely recover the variance of the source without the a priori knowledge of the other unknowns. Second, if active scattering measurement can be further obtained, a single realization can uniquely recover the potential function without knowing the source. Finally, both the potential and the first two statistic moments of the random source can be uniquely recovered with full measurement data. The major novelty of our study is that on the one hand, both the random source and the potential are unknown, and on the other hand, both passive and active scattering measurements are used for the recovery in different scenarios.

Coherent Semantic Attention for Image Inpainting

The latest deep learning-based approaches have shown promising results for the challenging task of inpainting missing regions of an image. However, the existing methods often generate contents with blurry textures and distorted structures due to the discontinuity of the local pixels. From a semantic-level perspective, the local pixel discontinuity is mainly because these methods ignore the semantic relevance and feature continuity of hole regions. To handle this problem, we investigate the human behavior in repairing pictures and propose a fined deep generative model-based approach with a novel coherent semantic attention (CSA) layer, which can not only preserve contextual structure but also make more effective predictions of missing parts by modeling the semantic relevance between the holes features. The task is divided into rough, refinement as two steps and model each step with a neural network under the U-Net architecture, where the CSA layer is embedded into the encoder of refinement step. To stabilize the network training process and promote the CSA layer to learn more effective parameters, we propose a consistency loss to enforce the both the CSA layer and the corresponding layer of the CSA in decoder to be close to the VGG feature layer of a ground truth image simultaneously. The experiments on CelebA, Places2, and Paris StreetView datasets have validated the effectiveness of our proposed methods in image inpainting tasks and can obtain images with a higher quality as compared with the existing state-of-the-art approaches.

On nodal and generalized singular structures of Laplacian eigenfunctions and applications to inverse scattering problems

In this paper, we present some novel and intriguing findings on the geometric structures of Laplacian eigenfunctions and their deep relationship to the quantitative behaviours of the eigenfunctions in two dimensions. We introduce a new notion of generalized singular lines of the Laplacian eigenfunctions, and carefully study these singular lines and the nodal lines. The studies reveal that the intersecting angle between two of those lines is closely related to the vanishing order of the eigenfunction at the intersecting point. We establish an accurate and comprehensive quantitative characterisation of the relationship. Roughly speaking, the vanishing order is generically infinite if the intersecting angle is {\it irrational}, and the vanishing order is finite if the intersecting angle is rational. In fact, in the latter case, the vanishing order is the degree of the rationality. The theoretical findings are original and of significant interest in spectral theory. Moreover, they are applied directly to some physical problems of great importance, including the inverse obstacle scattering problem and the inverse diffraction grating problem. It is shown in a certain polygonal setup that one can recover the support of the unknown scatterer as well as the surface impedance parameter by finitely many far-field patterns. Indeed, at most two far-field patterns are sufficient for some important applications. Unique identifiability by finitely many far-field patterns remains to be a highly challenging fundamental mathematical problem in the inverse scattering theory.

Uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering with phaseless near-field measurements

This paper is devoted to the uniqueness of inverse acoustic scattering problems with the modulus of near-field data. By utilizing the superpositions of point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the phaseless near-fields collected on an admissible surface can uniquely determine the location and shape of the obstacle as well as its boundary condition and the refractive index of a medium inclusion, respectively. We also establish the uniqueness in determining a locally rough surface from the phaseless near-field data due to superpositions of point sources. These are novel uniqueness results in inverse scattering with phaseless near-field data.

Identifying variations of magnetic anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring

We are concerned with the inverse problem of identifying magnetic anomalies with varing parameters beneath the Earth using geomagnetic monitoring. Observations of the change in Earth's magnetic field--the secular variation--provide information about the anomalies as well as their variations. In this paper, we rigorously establish the unique recovery results for this magnetic anomaly detection problem. We show that one can uniquely recover the locations, the variation parameters including the growth or decaying rates as well as their material parameters of the anomalies. This paper extends the existing results in [8] by two of the authors to varying anomalies.

Stable determination of polygonal inclusions in Calderón's problem by a single partial boundary measurement

We are concerned with the Calderón problem of determining an unknown conductivity of a body from the associated boundary measurement. We establish a logarithmic type stability estimate in terms of the Hausdorff distance in determining the support of a convex polygonal inclusion by a single partial boundary measurement. We also derive the uniqueness result in a more general scenario where the conductivities are piecewise constants supported in a nested polygonal geometry. Our methods in establishing the stability and uniqueness results have a significant technical initiative and a strong potential to apply to other inverse boundary value problems.

Analysis of electromagnetic scattering from plasmonic inclusions beyond the quasi-static approximation and applications

This paper is concerned with the analysis of time-harmonic electromagnetic scattering from plasmonic inclusions in the finite frequency regime beyond the quasi-static approximation. The electric permittivity and magnetic permeability in the inclusions are allowed to be negative-valued. Using layer potential techniques for the full Maxwell system, the scattering problem is reformulated into a system of integral equations. We derive the complete eigensystem of the involved matrix-valued integral operator within spherical geometry. As applications, we construct two types of plasmonic structures such that one can induce surface plasmon resonances within finite frequencies and the other one can produce invisibility cloaking. It is particularly noted that the cloaking effect is a newly found phenomenon and is of different nature from those existing ones for plasmonic structures in the literature. The surface plasmon resonance result may find applications in electromagnetic imaging.
