On identifying magnetized anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring II. A Magnetohydrodynamic Model

This paper is a continuation and an extension of our recent work [13] on the identification of magnetized anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring, which aims to establish a rigorous mathematical theory for the geomagnetic detection technology. Suppose a collection of magnetized anomalies is presented in the shell of the Earth. By monitoring the variation of the magnetic field of the Earth due to the presence of the anomalies, we establish sufficient conditions for the unique recovery of those unknown anomalies. In [13], the geomagnetic model was described by a linear Maxwell system. In this paper, we consider a much more sophisticated and complicated magnetohydrodynamic model, which stems from the widely accepted dynamo theory of geomagnetics.

Localization and geometrization in plasmon resonances and geometric structures of Neumann-Poincaré eigenfunctions

This paper reports some novel and intriguing discoveries about the localization and geometrization phenomenon in plasmon resonances and the intrinsic geometric structures of Neumann-Poincaré eigenfunctions. It is known that plasmon resonance generically occurs in the quasi-static regime where the size of the plasmonic inclusion is sufficiently small compared to the wavelength. In this paper, we show that the global smallness condition on the plasmonic inclusion can be replaced by a local high-curvature condition, and the plasmon resonance occurs locally near the high-curvature point of the plasmonic inclusion. We provide partial theoretical explanation and link with the geometric structures of the Neumann- Poincaré (NP) eigenfunctions. The spectrum of the Neumann-Poincaré operator has received significant attentions in the literature. We show for the first time some intrinsic geometric structures of the Neumann-Poincaré eigenfunctions near high-curvature points.

An inverse scattering approach for geometric body generation: a machine learning perspective

In this paper, we are concerned with the 2D and 3D geometric shape generation by prescribing a set of characteristic values of a specific geometric body. One of the major motivations of our study is the 3D human body generation in various applications. We develop a novel method that can generate the desired body with customized characteristic values. The proposed method follows a machine-learning flavour that generates the inferred geometric body with the input characteristic parameters from a training dataset. One of the critical ingredients and novelties of our method is the borrowing of inverse scattering techniques in the theory of wave propagation to the body generation. This is done by establishing a delicate one-to-one correspondence between a geometric body and the far-field pattern of a source scattering problem governed by the Helmholtz system. It in turn enables us to establish a one-to-one correspondence between the geometric body space and the function space defined by the far-field patterns. Hence, the far-field patterns can act as the shape generators. The shape generation with prescribed characteristic parameters is achieved by first manipulating the shape generators and then reconstructing the corresponding geometric body from the obtained shape generator by a stable multiple-frequency Fourier method. Our method is easy to implement and produces more efficient and stable body generations. We provide both theoretical analysis and extensive numerical experiments for the proposed method. The study is the first attempt to introduce inverse scattering approaches in combination with machine learning to the geometric body generation and it opens up many opportunities for further developments.

Symmetric-adjoint and symplectic-adjoint methods and their applications

Symmetric method and symplectic method are classical notions in the theory of Runge-Kutta methods. They can generate numerical flows that respectively preserve the symmetry and symplecticity of the continuous flows in the phase space. Adjoint method is an important way of constructing a new Runge-Kutta method via the symmetrisation of another Runge-Kutta method. In this paper, we introduce a new notion, called symplectic-adjoint Runge-Kutta method. We prove some interesting properties of the symmetric-adjoint and symplectic-adjoint methods. These properties reveal some intrinsic connections among several classical classes of Runge-Kutta methods. In particular, the newly introduced notion and the corresponding properties enable us to develop a novel and practical approach of constructing high-order explicit Runge-Kutta methods, which is a challenging and longly overlooked topic in the theory of Runge-Kutta methods.

Revisiting the Decoupling of Elastic Waves From a Weak Formulation Perspective

Elastic scattering governed by the Lame system associated with the third-type or fourth-type boundary condition is considered. It was shown in [8] by two of the authors that under suitable geometric conditions on the boundary surface of the elastic inclusion, the longitudinal and shear waves can be decoupled. The decoupling result in [8] was derived based on analyzing the local boundary behaviours of the elastic fields. In this article, we provide a different argument from a variational perspective in proving the decoupling result.

On anomalous localized resonance and plasmonic cloaking beyond the quasistatic limit

In this paper, we give the mathematical construction of novel core-shell plasmonic structures that can induce anomalous localized resonance and invisibility cloaking at certain finite frequencies beyond the quasistatic limit. The crucial ingredient in our study is that the plasmon constant and the loss parameter are constructed in a delicate way that are correlated and depend on the source and the size of the plasmonic structure. As a significant byproduct of this study, we also derive the complete spectrum of the Neumann-Poincáre operator associated to the Helmholtz equation with finite frequencies in the radial geometry. The spectral result is the first one in its type and is of significant mathematical interest for its own sake.

On a novel inverse scattering scheme using resonant modes with enhanced imaging resolution

We develop a novel wave imaging scheme for reconstructing the shape of an inhomogeneous scatterer and we consider the inverse acoustic obstacle scattering problem as a prototype model for our study. There exists a wealth of reconstruction methods for the inverse obstacle scattering problem and many of them intentionally avoid the interior resonant modes. Indeed, the occurrence of the interior resonance may cause the failure of the corresponding reconstruction. However, based on the observation that the interior resonant modes actually carry the geometrical information of the underlying obstacle, we propose an inverse scattering scheme of using those resonant modes for the reconstruction. To that end, we first develop a numerical procedure in determining the interior eigenvalues associated with an unknown obstacle from its far-field data based on the validity of the factorization method. Then we propose two efficient optimization methods in further determining the corresponding eigenfunctions. Using the afore-determined interior resonant modes, we show that the shape of the underlying obstacle can be effectively recovered. Moreover, the reconstruction yields enhanced imaging resolution, especially for the concave part of the obstacle. We provide rigorous theoretical justifications for the proposed method. Numerical examples in 2D and 3D verify the theoretically predicted effectiveness and efficiency of the method.

Analysis of surface polariton resonance for nanoparticles in elastic system

This paper is concerned with the analysis of surface polariton resonance for nanoparticles in linear elasticity. With the presence of nanoparticles, we first derive the perturbed displacement field associated to a given elastic source field. It is shown that the leading-order term of the perturbed elastic wave field is determined by the Neumann-Poincáre operator associated to the Lamé system. By analyzing the spectral properties of the aforesaid Neumann-Poincáre operator, we study the polariton resonance for the elastic system. The results may find applications in elastic wave imaging.

iReplayer: In-situ and Identical Record-and-Replay for Multithreaded Applications

Reproducing executions of multithreaded programs is very challenging due to many intrinsic and external non-deterministic factors. Existing RnR systems achieve significant progress in terms of performance overhead, but none targets the in-situ setting, in which replay occurs within the same process as the recording process. Also, most existing work cannot achieve identical replay, which may prevent the reproduction of some errors. This paper presents iReplayer, which aims to identically replay multithreaded programs in the original process (under the "in-situ" setting). The novel in-situ and identical replay of iReplayer makes it more likely to reproduce errors, and allows it to directly employ debugging mechanisms (e.g. watchpoints) to aid failure diagnosis. Currently, iReplayer only incurs 3% performance overhead on average, which allows it to be always enabled in the production environment. iReplayer enables a range of possibilities, and this paper presents three examples: two automatic tools for detecting buffer overflows and use-after-free bugs, and one interactive debugging tool that is integrated with GDB.

Retrieval of acoustic sources from multi-frequency phaseless data

This paper is concerned with the inverse source problem of reconstructing an unknown acoustic excitation from phaseless measurements of the radiated fields away at multiple frequencies. It is well known that the non-uniqueness issue is a major challenge associated with such an inverse problem. We develop a novel strategy to overcome this challenging problem by recovering the radiated fields via adding some reference point sources as extra artificial sources to the inverse source system. This novel reference source technique requires only a few extra data, and brings in a simple phase retrieval formula. The stability of this phase retrieval approach is rigorously analyzed. After the reacquisition of the phase information, the multi-frequency inverse source problem with recovered phase information is solved by the Fourier method, which is non-iterative, fast and easy to implement. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Determining a fractional Helmholtz system with unknown source and medium parameter

We are concerned with an inverse problem associated with the fractional Helmholtz system that arises from the study of viscoacoustics in geophysics and thermoviscous modelling of lossy media. We are particularly interested in the case that both the medium parameter and the internal source of the wave equation are unknown. Moreover, we consider a general class of source functions which can be frequency-dependent. We establish several general uniqueness results in simultaneously recovering both the medium parameter and the internal source by the corresponding exterior measurements. In sharp contrast, these unique determination results are unknown in the local case, which would be of significant importance in thermo- and photo-acoustic tomography.

On identifying magnetized anomalies using geomagnetic monitoring

We propose and investigate the inverse problem of identifying magnetized anomalies beneath the Earth using the geomagnetic monitoring. Suppose a collection of magnetized anomalies presented in the shell of the Earth. The presence of the anomalies interrupts the magnetic field of the Earth, monitored above the Earth. Using the difference of the magnetic fields before and after the presence of the magnetized anomalies, we show that one can uniquely recover the locations as well as their material parameters of the anomalies. Our study provides a rigorous mathematical theory to the geomagnetic detection technology that has been used in practice.

On localizing and concentrating electromagnetic fields

We consider field localizing and concentration of electromagnetic waves governed by the time-harmonic anisotropic Maxwell system in a bounded domain. It is shown that there always exist certain boundary inputs which can generate electromagnetic fields with energy localized/concentrated in a given subdomain while nearly vanishing in another given subdomain. The theoretical results may have potential applications in telecommunication, inductive charging and medical therapy. We also derive a related Runge approximation result for the time-harmonic anisotropic Maxwell system with partial boundary data.

Locating multiple multipolar acoustic sources using the direct sampling method

This work is concerned with the inverse source problem of locating multiple multipolar sources from boundary measurements for the Helmholtz equation. We develop simple and effective sampling schemes for location acquisition of the sources with a single wavenumber. Our algorithms are based on some novel indicator functions whose indicating behaviors could be used to locate multiple multipolar sources. The inversion schemes are totally "direct" in the sense that only simple integral calculations are involved in evaluating the indicator functions. Rigorous mathematical justifications are provided and extensive numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and efficiency of the proposed methods.

Fourier method for identifying electromagnetic sources with multi-frequency far-field data

We consider the inverse problem of determining an unknown vectorial source current distribution associated with the homogeneous Maxwell system. We propose a novel non-iterative reconstruction method for solving the aforementioned inverse problem from far-field measurements. The method is based on recovering the Fourier coefficients of the unknown source. A key ingredient of the method is to establish the relationship between the Fourier coefficients and the multi-frequency far-field data. Uniqueness and stability results are established for the proposed reconstruction method. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the method.

Recovery of an embedded obstacle and the surrounding medium for Maxwell's system

In this paper, we are concerned with the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem of recovering a complex scatterer by the corresponding electric far-field data. The complex scatterer consists of an inhomogeneous medium and a possibly embedded perfectly electric conducting (PEC) obstacle. The far-field data are collected corresponding to incident plane waves with a fixed incident direction and a fixed polarisation, but frequencies from an open interval. It is shown that the embedded obstacle can be uniquely recovered by the aforementioned far-field data, independent of the surrounding medium. Furthermore, if the surrounding medium is piecewise homogeneous, then the medium can be recovered as well. Those unique recovery results are new to the literature. Our argument is based on low-frequency expansions of the electromagnetic fields and certain harmonic analysis techniques.

Mosco convergence for H(curl) spaces, higher integrability for Maxwell's equations, and stability in direct and inverse EM scattering problems

This paper is concerned with the scattering problem for time-harmonic electromagnetic waves, due to the presence of scatterers and of inhomogeneities in the medium. We prove a sharp stability result for the solutions to the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, with respect to variations of the scatterer and of the inhomogeneity, under minimal regularity assumptions for both of them. The stability result leads to uniform bounds on solutions to the scattering problems for an extremely general class of admissible scatterers and inhomogeneities. The uniform bounds are a key step to tackle the challenging stability issue for the corresponding inverse electromagnetic scattering problem. In this paper we establish two optimal stability results of logarithmic type for the determination of polyhedral scatterers by a minimal number of electromagnetic scattering measurements. In order to prove the stability result for the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, we study two fundamental issues in the theory of Maxwell equations: Mosco convergence for H(curl) spaces and higher integrability properties of solutions to Maxwell equations in nonsmooth domains.

Simultaneously recovering potentials and embedded obstacles for anisotropic fractional Schrödinger operators

Let $A\in\mathrm{Sym}(n\times n)$ be an elliptic 2-tensor. Consider the anisotropic fractional Schrödinger operator $\mathscr{L}_A^s+q$, where $\mathscr{L}_A^s:=(-\nabla\cdot(A(x)\nabla))^s$, $s\in (0, 1)$ and $q\in L^\infty$. We are concerned with the simultaneous recovery of $q$ and possibly embedded soft or hard obstacles inside $q$ by the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map outside a bounded domain $Ω$ associated with $\mathscr{L}_A^s+q$. It is shown that a single measurement can uniquely determine the embedded obstacle, independent of the surrounding potential $q$. If multiple measurements are allowed, then the surrounding potential $q$ can also be uniquely recovered. These are surprising findings since in the local case, namely $s=1$, both the obstacle recovery by a single measurement and the simultaneous recovery of the surrounding potential by multiple measurements are longstanding problems and still remain open in the literature. Our argument for the nonlocal inverse problem is mainly based on the strong uniqueness property and Runge approximation property for anisotropic fractional Schrödinger operators.
