Koszul property and finite linearity defect over $g$-stretched local rings

The linearity defect is a measure for the non-linearity of minimal free resolutions of modules over noetherian local rings. A tantalizing open question due to Herzog and Iyengar asks whether a noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is Koszul if its residue field $R/\mathfrak{m}$ has a finite linearity defect. We provide a positive answer to this question when $R$ is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of almost minimal multiplicity with the residue field of characteristic zero. The proof depends on the study of noetherian local rings $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ such that $\mathfrak{m}^2$ is a principal ideal, which we call $g$-$stretched$ local rings. The class of $g$-stretched local rings subsumes stretched artinian local rings studied by Sally, and generic artinian reductions of Cohen-Macaulay local rings of almost minimal multiplicity. An essential part in the proof of our main result is a complete characterization of one-dimensional complete $g$-stretched local rings. Beside partial progress on Herzog-Iyengar's question, another consequence of our study is a numerical characterization of all $g$-stretched Koszul rings, strengthening previous work of Avramov, Iyengar, and \c{S}ega.

Asymptotic regularity of graded families of ideals

We show that the asymptotic regularity of a graded family $(I_n)_{n \ge 0}$ of homogeneous ideals in a reduced standard graded algebra, i.e., the limit $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \text{reg } I_n/n$, exists in several cases; for example, when the family $(I_n)_{n \ge 0}$ consists of artinian ideals, or Cohen-Macaulay ideals of the same codimension over an uncountable base field of characteristic $0$, or when its Rees algebra is Noetherian. Many applications, including simplifications and generalizations of previously known results on symbolic powers and integral closures of powers of homogeneous ideals, are discussed. We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the limit $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \text{reg } I_n/n$ in terms of the associated Newton--Okounkov region in various situations. We give a negative answer to the question of whether the limits $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \text{reg } (I_1^n + \dots + I_p^n)/n$ and $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \text{reg } (I_1^n \cap \cdots \cap I_p^n)/n$ exist, for $p \ge 2$ and homogeneous ideals $I_1, \dots, I_p$. We also examine ample evidence supporting a negative answer to the question of whether the asymptotic regularity of the family of symbolic powers of a homogeneous ideal always exists. Our work presents explicit Gr\"obner basis construction for ideals of the form $Q^n + (f^k)$, where $Q$ is a monomial ideal, $f$ is a polynomial in the polynomial ring in 4 variables over a field of characteristic $2$.

On the perturbations of Noetherian local domains

We study how the properties of being reduced, integral domain, and normal, behave under small perturbations of the defining equations of a noetherian local ring. It is not hard to show that the property of being a local integral domain (reduced, normal ring) is not stable under small perturbations in general. We prove that perturbation stability holds in the following situations: (1) perturbation of being an integral domain for factorial excellent Henselian local rings; (2) perturbation of normality for excellent local complete intersections containing a field of characteristic zero; and (3) perturbation of reducedness for excellent local complete intersections containing a field of characteristic zero, and for factorial Nagata local rings.

On the ordinary and symbolic powers of fiber products

We completely determine the depth and regularity of symbolic powers of the fiber product of two homogeneous ideals in disjoint sets of variables, given knowledge of the symbolic powers of each factor. Generalizing previous joint work with Vu, we provide exact, characteristic-independent formulas for the depth and regularity of ordinary powers of such fiber products.

Asymptotic depth of invariant chains of edge ideals

We completely determine the asymptotic depth, equivalently, the asymptotic projective dimension of a chain of edge ideals that is invariant under the action of the monoid Inc of increasing functions on the positive integers. Our results and their proofs also reveal surprising combinatorial and topological properties of corresponding graphs and their independence complexes. In particular, we are able to determine the asymptotic behavior of all reduced homology groups of these independence complexes.

The weak Lefschetz property of artinian algebras associated to paths and cycles

Given a base field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic zero, for each graph $G$, we associate the artinian algebra $A(G)$ defined by the edge ideal of $G$ and the squares of the variables. We study the weak Lefschetz property of $A(G)$. We classify some classes of graphs with relatively few edges, including paths and cycles, such that its associated artinian ring has the weak Lefschetz property.

Fiber criteria for flatness and homomorphisms of flat affine group schemes

A very useful result concerning flatness in Algebraic Geometry is EGA's ``fiber'' criterion. We propose similar fiber criteria to verify flatness of a module while avoiding ``finiteness'' assumptions. Motivated by a Tannakian viewpoint (where the category of representations comes to the front), we derive applications to the theory of affine and flat group schemes.

Resurgence number of graded families of ideals

We define the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence numbers associated to a pair of graded families of ideals in a Noetherian ring. These notions generalize the well-studied resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of an ideal in a polynomial ring. We examine when these invariant are finite and rational. We investigate situations where these invariant can be computed via Rees valuations or realized as actual limits of well-defined sequences. We study how the asymptotic resurgence changes when a family is replaced by its integral closure. Many examples are given to illustrate that whether or not known properties of resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of an ideal would extend to that of a pair of graded families of ideals generally depends on the Noetherian property and finite generation of the Rees algebras of these families.

Asymptotic regularity of invariant chains of edge ideals

We study chains of nonzero edge ideals that are invariant under the action of the monoid $\mathrm{Inc}$ of increasing functions on the positive integers. We prove that the sequence of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of ideals in such a chain is eventually constant with limit either 2 or 3, and we determine explicitly when the constancy behaviour sets in. This provides further evidence to a conjecture on the asymptotic linearity of the regularity of $\mathrm{Inc}$-invariant chains of homogeneous ideals. The proofs reveal unexpected combinatorial properties of $\mathrm{Inc}$-invariant chains of edge ideals.

On regularity and projective dimension of invariant chains of monomial ideals

Ideals in infinite-dimensional polynomial rings that are invariant under the action of the monoid of increasing functions have been extensively studied recently. Of particular interest is the asymptotic behavior of truncations of such an ideal in finite-dimensional polynomial subrings. It has been conjectured that the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity and projective dimension are eventual linear functions along such truncations. In the present paper we provide evidence for these conjectures. We show that for monomial ideals the projective dimension is eventually linear, while the regularity is asymptotically linear.

Binomial expansion for saturated and symbolic powers of sums of ideals

There are two different notions for symbolic powers of ideals existing in the literature, one defined in terms of associated primes, the other in terms of minimal primes. Elaborating on an idea known to Eisenbud, Herzog, Hibi, and Trung, we interpret both notions of symbolic powers as suitable saturations of the ordinary powers. We prove a binomial expansion formula for saturated powers of sums of ideals. This gives a uniform treatment to an array of existing and new results on both notions of symbolic powers of such sums: binomial expansion formulas, computations of depth and regularity, and criteria for the equality of ordinary and symbolic powers.

Powers of sums and their associated primes

Let $A, B$ be polynomial rings over a field $k$, and $I\subseteq A, J\subseteq B$ proper homogeneous ideals. We analyze the associated primes of powers of $I+J\subseteq A\otimes_k B$ given the data on the summands. The associated primes of large enough powers of $I+J$ are determined. We then answer positively a question about the persistence property of $I+J$ in many new cases.

Regularity and Koszul property of symbolic powers of monomial ideals

Let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring over a field. Let $I^{(n)}$ be the $n$-th symbolic power of $I$. Motivated by results about ordinary powers of $I$, we study the asymptotic behavior of the regularity function $\text{reg}~ (I^{(n)})$ and the maximal generating degree function $ω(I^{(n)})$, when $I$ is a monomial ideal. It is known that both functions are eventually quasi-linear. We show that, in addition, the sequences $\{\text{reg}~ I^{(n)}/n\}_n$ and $\{ω(I^{(n)})/n\}_n$ converge to the same limit, which can be described combinatorially. We construct an example of an equidimensional, height two squarefree monomial ideal $I$ for which $ω(I^{(n)})$ and $\text{reg}~ (I^{(n)})$ are not eventually linear functions. For the last goal, we introduce a new method for establishing the componentwise linearity of ideals. This method allows us to identify a new class of monomial ideals whose symbolic powers are componentwise linear.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity up to symmetry

We study the asymptotic behavior of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity along chains of graded ideals in increasingly larger polynomial rings that are invariant under the action of symmetric groups. A linear upper bound for the regularity of such ideals is established. We conjecture that their regularity grows eventually precisely linearly. We establish this conjecture in several cases, most notably when the ideals are Artinian or squarefree monomial.

Codimension and Projective Dimension up to Symmetry

Symmetric ideals in increasingly larger polynomial rings that form an ascending chain are investigated. We focus on the asymptotic behavior of codimensions and projective dimensions of ideals in such a chain. If the ideals are graded it is known that the codimensions grow eventually linearly. Here this result is extended to chains of arbitrary symmetric ideals. Moreover, the slope of the linear function is explicitly determined. We conjecture that the projective dimensions also grow eventually linearly. As part of the evidence we establish two non-trivial lower linear bounds of the projective dimensions for chains of monomial ideals. As an application, this yields Cohen-Macaulayness obstructions.

Homological invariants of powers of fiber products

Let $R$ and $S$ be polynomial rings of positive dimensions over a field $k$. Let $I\subseteq R, J\subseteq S$ be non-zero homogeneous ideals none of which contains a linear form. Denote by $F$ the fiber product of $I$ and $J$ in $T=R\otimes_k S$. We compute homological invariants of the powers of $F$ using the data of $I$ and $J$. Under the assumption that either $\text{char}~ k=0$ or $I$ and $J$ are monomial ideals, we provide explicit formulas for the depth and regularity of powers of $F$. In particular, we establish for all $s\ge 2$ the intriguing formula $\text{depth}(T/F^s)=0$. If moreover each of the ideals $I$ and $J$ is generated in a single degree, we show that for all $s\ge 1$, $\text{reg}~ F^s=\max_{i\in [1,s]}\{\text{reg}~ I^i+s-i,\text{reg}~ J^i+s-i\}$. Finally, we prove that the linearity defect of $F$ is the maximum of the linearity defects of $I$ and $J$, extending previous work of Conca and Römer. The proofs exploit the so-called Betti splittings of powers of a fiber product.

Powers of sums and their homological invariants

Let $R$ and $S$ be standard graded algebras over a field $k$, and $I \subseteq R$ and $J \subseteq S$ homogeneous ideals. Denote by $P$ the sum of the extensions of $I$ and $J$ to $R\otimes_k S$. We investigate several important homological invariants of powers of $P$ based on the information about $I$ and $J$, with focus on finding the exact formulas for these invariants. Our investigation exploits certain Tor vanishing property of natural inclusion maps between consecutive powers of $I$ and $J$. As a consequence, we provide fairly complete information about the depth and regularity of powers of $P$ given that $R$ and $S$ are polynomial rings and either $\text{char}~ k=0$ or $I$ and $J$ are generated by monomials.

Products of ideals of linear forms in quadric hypersurfaces

Conca and Herzog proved that any product of ideals of linear forms in a polynomial ring has a linear resolution. The goal of this paper is to establish the same result for any quadric hypersurface. The main tool we develop and use is a flexible version of Derksen and Sidman's approximation systems.
